Do not beat Allah's handmaidens, but when Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Women have become emboldened towards their husbands, he (the Prophet) gave permission to beat them. Then many women came round the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complaining against their husbands. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Many women have gone round Muhammad's family complaining against their husbands. They are not the best among you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2146)  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ اللَّهِ» فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ذَئِرْنَ النِّسَاءُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ فَرَخَّصَ فِي ضَرْبِهِنَّ فَأَطَافَ بِآلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ نِسَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ يَشْتَكِينَ أَزْوَاجَهُنَّ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَقَدْ طَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ نِسَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ يَشْتَكِينَ أَزْوَاجَهُنَّ لَيْسَ أُولَائِكَ بِخِيَارِكُمْ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not hit the female servants of Allah." Then Umar came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, women have become defiant towards their husbands." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted permission for them to be struck. He then went around the household of Muhammad ﷺ and found seventy women, all of whom complained about their husbands. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Those are not the best among you."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ اللَّهِ» فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ ذَئِرْنَ النِّسَاءُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ فَأَذِنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يَضْرِبُوهُنَّ قَالَ فَأَطَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ سَبْعُونَ امْرَأَةً كُلُّهُنَّ يَشْتَكِينَ أَزْوَاجَهُنَّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَيْسَ أُولَئِكَ خِيَارُكُمْ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not hit the slave girls of Allah." The women began to disagree and their manners worsened towards their husbands. Then Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "The women have disagreed and their manners have worsened towards their husbands since you prohibited hitting them." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "So, hit them." The people then began to hit their wives that night. Many women came complaining about being hit, so the Prophet ﷺ said in the morning, "Indeed, Muhammed's family has been surrounded by seventy women, all of them complaining about being hit, and I swear by Allah, you will not find those women to be the best among you."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ اللَّهِ» قَالَ فَذَئِرَ النِّسَاءُ وَسَاءَتْ أَخْلَاقُهُنَّ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ذَئِرَ النِّسَاءُ وَسَاءَتْ أَخْلَاقُهُنَّ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ مُنْذُ نَهَيْتَ عَنْ ضَرْبِهِنَّ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «فَاضْرِبُوا» فَضَرَبَ النَّاسُ نِسَاءَهُمْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ فَأَتَى نِسَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ يَشْتَكِينَ الضَّرْبَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حِينَ أَصْبَحَ «لَقَدْ طَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ اللَّيْلَةَ سَبْعُونَ امْرَأَةً كُلُّهُنَّ يَشْتَكِينَ الضَّرْبَ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَا تَجِدُونَ أُولَئِكَ خِيَارُكُمْ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not beat the female slaves of Allah." So they stopped beating them. Then Umar came and said, "By Allah, the women have become bold with their husbands." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that they be beaten. He went around the family of Muhammad ﷺ and there were many women there. When morning came, he said, "The family of Muhammad ﷺ has been visited by seventy women this night, all of whom complain about being beaten. By Allah, I do not think these (women) are the best among you."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ اللهِ» فَتَرَكُوا ضَرْبَهُنَّ فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ لَقَدْ ذَئِرَ النِّسَاءُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِضَرْبِهِنَّ فَأَطَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ نِسَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ «لَقَدْ طَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ اللَّيْلَةَ سَبْعُونَ امْرَأَةً كُلُّهُنَّ يَشْتَكِي الضَّرْبَ وَايْمُ اللهِ مَا أَحْسَبُ أُولَئِكَ خِيَارَكُمْ»  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not hit the female slaves of Allah." He said, "The women became tough and their manners worsened towards their husbands." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, the women became tough and their manners worsened towards their husbands since you forbade hitting them." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then strike them." So the people began to hit their wives that night. Many women went complaining about being hit. The Prophet ﷺ said the next morning, "I saw seventy women from the family of Muhammad, all of them complaining about being hit. By Allah, you will not find those women to be the best among you." We have been informed by Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari that he said, "Iyas is not known to have any companionship." The scholar said, and it has been narrated from another source as well.  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ اللهِ قَالَ فَذَئِرَ النِّسَاءُ وَسَاءَتْ أَخْلَاقُهُنَّ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ذَئِرَ النِّسَاءُ وَسَاءَتْ أَخْلَاقُهُنَّ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ مُنْذُ نَهَيْتَ عَنْ ضَرْبِهِنَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ قَالَ فَضَرَبَ النَّاسُ نِسَاءَهُمْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ قَالَ فَأَتَى نِسَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ يَشْتَكِينَ الضَّرْبَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حِينَ أَصْبَحَ لَقَدْ طَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ اللَّيْلَةَ سَبْعُونَ امْرَأَةً كُلُّهُنَّ يَشْتَكِينَ الضَّرْبَ وَايْمُ اللهِ لَا تَجِدُونَ أُولَئِكَ خِيَارَكُمْ بَلَغَنَا عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبُخَارِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَا يُعْرَفُ لِإِيَاسٍ صُحْبَةٌ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ مُرْسَلًا  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not beat the female slaves of Allah." So 'Umar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Women have become emboldened over their husbands, so give them permission to beat them." So they were given permission and they started to beat them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went around among the women, and there were many women with him. He said, "Tonight, seventy women from the family of Muhammad have gone around complaining about their husbands. You will not find those among the best of you."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ اللهِ فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ ؓ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ ذَئِرَ النِّسَاءُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ فَأَذِنَ لَهُمْ فَضَرَبُوا فَأَطَافَ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ نِسَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ أَطَافَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ اللَّيْلَةَ سَبْعُونَ امْرَأَةً كُلُّهُنَّ يَشْتَكِينَ أَزْوَاجَهُنَّ وَلَا تَجِدُونَ أُولَئِكَ خِيَارَكُمْ  

" عَنْ إِيَاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ أبِى ذباب، قَالَ: قَالَ رسُولُ الله ﷺ : لاَ تَضْرِبُوا إِمَاءَ الله، قَدْ برأ النِّسَاءُ وَسَاءَتْ أخْلاَقُهُن عَلَى أزْوَاجِهِن، فَقالَ عمَرُ: يَا رَسُولَ الله، دبر النِّساءُ وَسَادَتْ أَخْلاَقُهُن عَلَى أَزْواجِهِنَّ منذُ نَهَيْتَ عَنْ ضَرْبِهِن، فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ : فَاضْرِبُوهُن، فَضَرَبَ النَّاسُ النِّسَاءَ تِلكَ اللَّيْلَةَ، فَأتَى نِسَاءٌ كَثِير يَشْتَكِينَ الضَّرْبَ، فَقَالَ رسُولُ الله ﷺ حِينَ أصبَحَ: لَقَدْ طَافَ اللَّيْلَةَ بِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ سَبْعُونَ امْرَأَةً، كلُهُنَّ يَشْتَكِى مِنَ الضرْبِ، وَايْمُ الله لاَ تَجِدُونَ أولَئِكَ خِيَارَكُمْ ".
