It was said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! As for the salām (sending greetings and peace), we know how ˹to do it˺, but how is ˹sending˺ ṣalāh ˹upon you˺?" He said, "Say: allāhumma ṣalli ʿalá muḥammadin wa-ʿalá āli muḥammaddin, kamā ṣallayta ʿalá āli ibrāhīma, innaka ḥamīdun majīd, allāhumma bārik ʿalá muḥammadin wa-ʿalá āli muḥammaddin, kamā bārakta ʿalá āli ibrāhīma, innaka ḥamīdun majīd."

قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَّا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ، فَكَيْفَ الصَّلاَةُ؟ قَالَ: «قُولُوا (اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ۔)»

Kaʿb bin 'Ujra met me and said, "Shall I give you a present? Once the Prophet ﷺ came to us and we said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ! We know how to greet you; but how to send 'Salat' upon you? He said, 'Say: Allahumma Salli ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ʿAli Muhammadin, kama sal-laita 'ala all Ibrahima innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala all Muhammadin, kama barakta 'ala all Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid."

أَلاَ أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَقُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

We said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ This is (i.e. we know) the greeting to you; will you tell us how to send Salat on you?" He said, "Say: 'Allahumma Salli 'ala Muhammadin ʿAbdika wa rasulika kama sal-laita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa all Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa ʿAli Ibrahim."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

Ka'b b. 'Ujra met me and said: Should I not offer you a present (and added): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and we said: We have learnt how to invoke peace upon you; (kindly tell us) how we should bless you. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Say:" O Allah: bless Muhammad and his family as Thou didst bless the family of Ibrahim. Verily Thou art Praiseworthy and Glorious, O Allah."

أَلاَ أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

We said or the people said: Messenger of Allah, you have commanded us to invoke blessing on you and to salute you. As regards salutation we have already learnt it. How should we invoke blessing? He said: Say: “O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst bless Abraham and Abraham’s family. O Allah, grant favours to Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham; Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.

قُلْنَا أَوْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ وَأَنْ نُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْكَ فَأَمَّا السَّلاَمُ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as didst bless Abraham. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. O Allah grant favours of Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favour to Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by al-Zubair b. ‘Adi as narrated by Mis’ar , except that his version goes: As Thou didst bless Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. And grant favours to Muhammad. He then narrated the tradition in full.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

"It was said to the Prophet ﷺ: We have been commanded to send salah and salams upon you. We know how to send salams, but how should we send salah?' He said: Say: 'Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim).'"

قِيلَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ أُمِرْنَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ وَنُسَلِّمَ أَمَّا السَّلاَمُ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

"Ka'b bin Ujrah said to me: 'Shall I not give you a gift?' We said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'"

لِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ أَلاَ أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

His father said: "We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'"

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

A man came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said: "How should we send blessings upon you, O Prophet of Allah?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'"

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَتَى نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know how to send salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin 'abdika wa rasulika kama salaita 'ala Ibrahim wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger , as You sent Salah upon Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim)."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ

“We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! We know what it means to send greetings upon you, but what does it mean to send peace and blessings upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin ‘abdika wa Rasulika kama salayta ‘ala Ibrahima, wa barik ‘ala Muhammad (wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin) kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima [O Allah, send Your grace, honor and mercy upon Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger, as You sent Your (grace, honour and mercy) upon Ibrahim, and send Your blessings upon Muhammad (and the family of Muhammad) as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim].”

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلاَةُ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ

“I heard Ibn Abi Laila say: ‘Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah met me and said: “Shall I not give you a gift? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and we said: ‘We know what it means to send greetings on you, but what does it mean to send peace and blessings upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallayta ‘ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid; Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid (O Allah, send your grace, honour and mercy upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your grace, honour and mercy upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious).’”

أَلاَ أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا السَّلاَمَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

“I heard Ibn Abi Laila say: ‘Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah met me and said: “Shall I not give you a gift? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and we said: ‘We know what it means to send greetings on you, but what does it mean to send peace and blessings upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallayta ‘ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid; Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin, kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid (O Allah, send your grace, honour and mercy upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your grace, honour and mercy upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 904)

أَلَا أُهْدِي إلَيكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقُلْنَا قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.”

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُلْ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

“We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! We know what it means to send greetings upon you, but what does it mean to send peace and blessings upon you?’ He said: ‘Say: “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin ‘abdika wa Rasulika kama salayta ‘ala Ibrahima, wa barik ‘ala Muhammad (wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin) kama barakta ‘ala Ibrahima [O Allah, send Your grace, honor and mercy upon Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger, as You sent Your (grace, honour and mercy) upon Ibrahim, and send Your blessings upon Muhammad (and the family of Muhammad) as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim].” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 903)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَلِمْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىإِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا أَوْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَدْ عَلِمْنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَ فَعَلَّمَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have learned how to greet you, so how should we pray for you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, bestow Your prayers, mercy, and blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You bestowed them upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّى عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَرَحْمَتَكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا جَعَلْتَهَا عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Fatimah, 'Bring your husband and your two sons to me.' So she brought them to him, and he threw a cloak over them, and then he placed his hand on them and said, 'O Allah, these are the family of Muhammad, so bestow Your blessings and peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. Surely, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.' Umm Salamah said, 'I raised the cloak to enter with them, but he pulled it from my hand and said, 'You are on goodness.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِفَاطِمَةَ ائْتِينِي بِزَوْجِكِ وَابْنَيْكِ فَجَاءَتْ بِهِمْ فَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِمْ كِسَاءً فَدَكِيًّا قَالَ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللهُمَّ إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ فَاجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ فَرَفَعْتُ الْكِسَاءَ لِأَدْخُلَ مَعَهُمْ فَجَذَبَهُ مِنْ يَدِي وَقَالَ إِنَّكِ عَلَى خَيْرٍ

"Ka'b bin Ujrah said to me: 'Shall I not give you a gift?' We said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?" He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1289)

لِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ؛ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

His father said: "We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1290)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. عَن أبي هُرَيرة؛ أنهم سَأَلُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كيف نصلي عليك؟ قال قولوا اللهم صل على مُحَمد وبارك على مُحَمد وعلى آل مُحَمد كما صليت وباركت على إبراهيم وآل إبراهيم في العالمين إنك حُمَيد مجيد والسلام كما علمتم وهذا اللفظ لا نحفظه إلاَّ من حديث داود عن نعيم عَن أبي هُرَيرة

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Fatimah, "Bring your husband and your two sons to me." So she brought them to him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covered them with a cloak, then he placed his hand on them and said, "O Allah, these are the family of Muhammad, so bestow Your prayers and blessings upon the family of Muhammad. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious." Umm Salamah said, "I raised the cloak to enter with them, but he pulled it from my hand and said, 'You are on the right path.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِفَاطِمَةَ «ائْتِينِي بِزَوْجِكِ وَابْنَيْهِ» فَجَاءَتْ بِهِمْ فَأَلْقَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كِسَاءً فَدَكِيًّا ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ فَاجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ عَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ فَإِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ فَرَفَعْتُ الْكِسَاءَ لِأَدْخُلَ مَعَهُمْ فَجَذَبَهُ مِنْ يَدِي وَقَالَ «إِنَّكِ عَلَى خَيْرٍ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Fatima, "Bring your husband and your sons to me." So she brought them to him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covered them with a garment, then he said, "O Allah, these are the family of Muhammad, so bestow your prayers and blessings upon the family of Muhammad as You bestowed them upon Ibrahim. Verily, You are praiseworthy and glorious."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِفَاطِمَةَ «ائْتِينِي بِزَوْجِكِ وَابْنَيْكِ» فَجَاءَتْ بِهِمْ فَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كِسَاءً ثُمَّ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ هَؤُلَاءِ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ فَاجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ عَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا جَعَلْتَهَا عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

"We said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we know how to send salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin 'abdika wa rasulika kama salaita 'ala Ibrahim wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad, Your slave and Messenger , as You sent Salah upon Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim)." قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

[AI] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know how to say salaam to you, but how do we send blessings upon you?" He said, "Say: "O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad as You sent prayers upon Ibrahim. O Allah, bless Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَمَّا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. [AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have learned how to greet you, so how should we pray for you?" He said, "Say: 'O Allah, send peace and blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent peace and blessings upon Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy, glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy, glorious."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُلْ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you, so how do we pray upon you?" He replied, "Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majidun. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majidun."

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know this greeting of peace, but how should we send blessings upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim. Verily, You are praiseworthy and glorious. O Allah, shower blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You showered blessings upon Ibrahim. Verily, You are praiseworthy and glorious.

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Kaʿb bin 'Ujra met me and said, "Shall I give you a present? Once the Prophet ﷺ came to us and we said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ! We know how to greet you; but how to send 'Salat' upon you? He said, 'Say: Allahumma Salli ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ʿAli Muhammadin, kama sal-laita 'ala all Ibrahima innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala all Muhammadin, kama barakta 'ala all Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majid." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6357)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلَ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ «» وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَرْبٍ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Yes, I said yes." A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, we have learned or you have taught us (to say) 'Peace be upon you.' So how should we send peace upon you?" He said, "Say: O Allah, send your peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have sent peace upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا أَوْ قَالَ قَدْ عَلَّمْتَنَا السَّلَامَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are familiar with this greeting, but how about the prayer?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, send peace and blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent peace and blessings upon the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] "When 'Indeed, Allah and His angels pray upon the Prophet' was revealed, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you, we already know how to say salaam to you, but how should we pray upon you, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied, 'Say: O Allah, pray upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You prayed upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are praiseworthy and glorious.'"

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ} قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ قُلِ اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

His father said: "We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should we send salah upon you?' He said: 'Say: Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahima wa barik 'ala Muhammad kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim fil-'alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1290)

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know how to greet you, so how should we send prayers upon you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Say: 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy and glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy and glorious."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عَرَفْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have known this greeting of peace upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you?" He said, "Say: 'O Allah, send peace upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You have sent peace upon Ibrahim and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have blessed Ibrahim. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious.'"

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] He said to the Prophet, "This is the peace upon you, we know it, so how do we pray upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy, glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are praiseworthy, glorious.' " And he didn't mention in the hadith Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Layla.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ «» وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى

[AI] "Can I give you a gift?" I said, "Yes." He said, "How do we greet you, O Messenger of Allah? And how do we pray upon you?" He said, "Say: 'O Allah, send peace and blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent peace and blessings upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.'" Al-Zubair bin 'Adiy narrated from 'Abdul Rahman bin Abi Layla.

لَهُ أَلَا أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ «قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى

[AI] We said to the Prophet ﷺ , "We have already known how to greet you, but how should we send blessings upon you?" He replied, "Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahim wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka hamidun majid. Wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka hamidun majid."

قُلْنَا لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we know how to greet you with peace, so how do we pray upon you?" He said, "Say, 'O Allah, send your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have sent blessings upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are worthy of praise and glory. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have blessed Ibrahim. Indeed, You are worthy of praise and glory."

قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] "A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we know how to greet you, but how do we send blessings upon you?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'You say, O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, shower blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You showered blessings upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.'"

رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْكَ؟ فَقَالَ تَقُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Fatimah, "Bring your husband and his two sons to me." So she brought them to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw a cloak over them, and then placed his hand on them and said, "O Allah, these are the family of Muhammad, so bestow Your blessings and peace upon the family of Muhammad. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious." Umm Salamah said, "I lifted the cloak to go in with them, but he pulled it away from my hands and said, 'You are in a good state.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِفَاطِمَةَ «ائْتِنِي بِزَوْجِكِ وَابْنَيْهِ» فَجَاءَتْ بِهِمْ فَأَلْقَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَيْهِمْ كِسَاءً فَدَكِيًّا ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ فَاجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ عَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ فَإِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ» قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ فَرَفَعْتُ الْكِسَاءَ لِأَدْخُلَ مَعَهُمْ فَجَبَذَهُ مِنْ يَدَيَّ وَقَالَ «إِنَّكِ عَلَى خَيْرٍ»

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ قَالَ قُولُوا «اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ»

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have known how to send blessings upon you, so how do we pray upon you?" He said, "Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita 'ala Ibrahim wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Ibn Abi Layla said, "And we say, 'and upon us with them.' " And he narrated the hadith.

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى وَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ «وَعَلَيْنَا مَعَهُمْ» وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ

I said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how do we send blessings upon you?” He said: ʿSay: O Allah, send Your salah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salah upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. And send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1396)

قُولُوا اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

"قُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَعَلى أَزْوَاجِه وَذُرِّيَّتِه كَمَا صَلَّيتَ عَلَى آل إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِك عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى أَزْوَاجه وَذُرِّيَّتِه، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ".

"قُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى محَمَّد, وَعَلى آلِ محَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ, وَبَارِكْ عَلَى محَمَّدٍ, كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، في الْعَالمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، وَالسَّلام كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُم".
