[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ lost Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas, so a man said, "I know where he is, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then went to him and found him in a house with his head down, crying. The man said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is missing you." Thabit replied, "I raised my voice louder than the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so my deeds were nullified and I am among the people of the Fire." He then went to the Prophet ﷺ , who said, "Go back to him and inform him that he is not from the people of the Fire, but from the people of Paradise."

Allah has also forbidden us from raising our voices above yours, and I am a loud-voiced man. And Allah has forbidden us from ostentation, and I am a man who loves beauty.' The Prophet ﷺ then said, 'O Thabit, would you not like to live a praiseworthy life and die as a martyr?' Thabit was martyred on the day of the Battle of Yamamah."

[Machine] I said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I feared that I may have perished. He said, "Why?" I said, Allah forbids a person to be praised for what he did not do, and I find myself loving to be praised. And Allah forbids boasting, and I find myself loving to boast. And Allah forbids raising our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice. Then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Don't you want to live a praiseworthy life and be martyred and enter Paradise?" I said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah. So he lived a praiseworthy life and was martyred on the day of Musaylimah.

He said, "Verily, Allah forbids us from praising what we have not done, and I find myself loving praise. He forbids us from boasting, and I am a person who loves beauty. He forbids us from raising our voices above yours, and I am a person with a loud voice." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "O Thabit bin Qais, are you not pleased to live as a praiseworthy person, be killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise?"

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, I feared that I may have been destroyed," he said. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Why?" He replied, "Allah has forbidden a person to desire to be praised for what they have not done. And I find myself loving praise, and Allah has forbidden us from being loud and I find myself loving beauty, and He has forbidden us from raising our voices above yours. [Machine] When this verse was revealed: "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet," Thabit sat on the road crying. Aasim ibn Adi passed by him and asked, "What makes you cry, O Thabit?" He replied, "I have a loud voice and I fear that this verse was revealed about me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to him, "O my son, would you not be pleased to live as a praised one, be killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise?" Thabit said, "I am pleased with the glad tidings of Allah and His Messenger. I will never raise my voice above the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Then the verse was revealed: "Indeed, those who lower their voices."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ mentioned arrogance and emphasized it, saying, "Indeed, Allah does not love every arrogant and boastful person." A man from the people said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I wash my clothes and I am pleased with their whiteness, and I am pleased with the stitching of my sandals and the strap of my whip." He ﷺ said, "That is not arrogance. Rather, arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down upon people."

[Machine] I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he recited this verse: "Indeed, Allah does not like everyone who is self-deluded and boastful." Thabit ibn Qays mentioned arrogance and the Prophet ﷺ magnified it. Thabit ibn Qays started crying, so the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "What makes you cry?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I love beauty. It appeals to me that my shoes should be beautiful." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then you are from the people of Paradise. Arrogance is not in improving your ride and wearing good shoes. Rather, arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down upon people."

The Prophet ﷺ kept looking at me while I was praying. When I finished, he asked, 'Didn't you pray with us?' I said, 'Yes.' He asked, 'Then what was this prayer?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, these were my two units of Fajr prayer that I had missed because I left my house without praying them.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not blame me for that."

[Machine] I heard my father say when the following verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful" (Quran 57:23), the difficulty intensified for Thabit. He closed the door and started crying. He was informed about the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ, who sent for him and asked him about the hardship he was going through. Thabit explained that he was a man who loved beauty and being from a black-skinned people, he was feeling dejected. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You are not one of them. Instead, you will live well, die well, and Allah will admit you into Paradise." When Allah revealed the verse, "O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech" (Quran 49:2), Thabit started practicing it. He informed the Prophet ﷺ, who sent for him and told him that he had been too loud and that he was concerned his deeds might go to waste. The Prophet ﷺ assured him, "You are not one of them. Instead, you will live well, die well, and Allah will admit you into Paradise." When Abu Bakr mobilized the Muslims against the apostates of Al-Riddah, the Battle of Yamama, and Musaylima the Liar, Thabit bin Qais joined the campaign. They faced Musaylima and the Banu Hanifa three times, and the Muslims were defeated each time. Thabit said, "O Saeed, my servant of Abu Hudhaifa, this is not how we used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." They dug a trench for themselves and fought until they were both killed. I dreamt of a Muslim man, Thabit bin Qais, who said, "Yesterday, after I was killed, a Muslim man passed by me and took a beautiful shield from me. He has his tent in the furthest part of the camp, and there is a horse tied in front of it, with a saddle placed on the horse's back." Thabit asked Saeed to inform Khalid bin Walid and ask him to collect the shield and inform the Caliph, Abu Bakr, about his debt, his share of the money, and the enslaved person who served him. He advised him not to say it was a dream. Saeed went to Khalid bin Walid and described the shield as Thabit had mentioned. He also went to Abu Bakr and informed him about what was said. After the death of Abu Bakr, his testament became known, and we do not know of anyone whose testament was carried out after their death except Thabit bin Qais bin Shammash.
