I saw a man whose opinion was accepted by the people, and whatever he said they submitted to it. I asked: Who is he? They said: This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: On you be peace, Messenger of Allah, twice. He said: Do not say "On you be peace," for "On you be peace" is a greeting for the dead, but say "Peace be upon you". I asked: You are the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon you)? He said: I am the Messenger of Allah Whom you call when a calamity befalls you and He removes it; when you suffer from drought and you call Him, He grows food for you; and when you are in a desolate land or in a desert and your she-camel strays and you call Him, He returns it to you. I said: Give me some advice. He said: Do not abuse anyone. He said that he did not abuse a freeman, or a slave, or a camel or a sheep thenceforth. He said: Do not look down upon any good work, and when you speak to your brother, show him a cheerful face. This is a good work. Have your lower garment halfway down your shin; if you cannot do it, have it up to the ankles. Beware of trailing the lower garment, for it is conceit and Allah does not like conceit. And if a man abuses and shames you for something which he finds in you, then do not shame him for something which you find in him; he will bear the evil consequences for it.

عَنْ رَأْيِهِ لاَ يَقُولُ شَيْئًا إِلاَّ صَدَرُوا عَنْهُ قُلْتُ مَنْ هَذَا قَالُوا هَذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلاَمُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ تَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ السَّلاَمُ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلاَمُ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَيِّتِ قُلِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الَّذِي إِذَا أَصَابَكَ ضُرٌّ فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَهُ عَنْكَ وَإِنْ أَصَابَكَ عَامُ سَنَةٍ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَهَا لَكَ وَإِذَا كُنْتَ بِأَرْضٍ قَفْرَاءَ أَوْ فَلاَةٍ فَضَلَّتْ رَاحِلَتُكَ فَدَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّهَا عَلَيْكَ قُلْتُ اعْهَدْ إِلَىَّ قَالَ لاَ تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا قَالَ فَمَا سَبَبْتُ بَعْدَهُ حُرًّا وَلاَ عَبْدًا وَلاَ بَعِيرًا وَلاَ شَاةً قَالَ وَلاَ تَحْقِرَنَّ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَأَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ وَجْهُكَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَارْفَعْ إِزَارَكَ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ وَعَيَّرَكَ بِمَا يَعْلَمُ فِيكَ فَلاَ تُعَيِّرْهُ بِمَا تَعْلَمُ فِيهِ فَإِنَّمَا وَبَالُ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ

[AI] He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or he said, "I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and a man came to him and said, "Are you the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" or he said, "Are you Muhammad?" He said, "Yes." He said, "What do you call to?" He said, "I call to Allah alone. If you have any troubles, I can pray for their removal. If you experience a drought for a year, I can pray for its end. If you find yourself in a barren land, I can pray for your return." He said, "Then the man embraced Islam and said, "Advise me, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not curse anything or anyone." The man said, "The ruler is unjust." He said, "You have not abused your donkey or sheep since the Prophet ﷺ advised you. Do not abandon good deeds, even if you have to extend your face towards your brother while talking to him, or empty your bucket into the watering-pot of a person seeking water, and dress your lower garment to mid-calf, and if you dislike it, then to the ankles. And beware of being extravagant in your clothing, for indeed, Allah the Blessed and Exalted does not like extravagance."

أَنَّهُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ قَالَ شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ أَوْ قَالَأَنْتَ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِلَامَ تَدْعُو ؟ قَالَ أَدْعُو إِلَى اللهِ ﷻ وَحْدَهُ مَنْ إِذَا كَانَ بِكَ ضُرٌّ فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَهُ عَنْكَ وَمَنْ إِذَا أَصَابَكَ عَامُ سَنَةٍ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَ لَكَ وَمَنْ إِذَا كُنْتَ فِي أَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ فَأَضْلَلْتَ فَدَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَأَسْلَمَ الرَّجُلُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَوْصِنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ لَهُ لَا تَسُبَّنَّ شَيْئًا أَوْ قَالَ أَحَدًا شَكَّ الْحَكَمُ قَالَ فَمَا سَبَبْتُ بَعِيرًا وَلَا شَاةً مُنْذُ أَوْصَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا تَزْهَدْ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَوْ مُنْبَسِطٌ وَجْهُكَ إِلَى أَخِيكَ وَأَنْتَ تُكَلِّمُهُ وَأَفْرِغْ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَاتَّزِرْ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَاللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ , and he was sitting with his companions. I asked, "Who among you is the Prophet?" He replied, "Either he will lower his gaze towards himself or the people will point to him." Then, I saw a man wearing a white robe, and its hem was on his feet. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I abstain from certain things, so teach me." He said, "Fear Allah and do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it is pouring water from your bucket into the vessel of a person looking for water. And beware of suspicion, for Allah does not like suspicion. If someone insults you and accuses you of something he knows about you, do not accuse him of something you know about him, for then you will bear the sin and he will bear the reward. And do not revile anyone."

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَإِذَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ مَعَ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ أَيُّكُمُ النَّبِيُّ قَالَ فَإِمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ أَوْمَأَ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ وَإِمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ أَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ الْقَوْمُ قَالَ فَإِذَا هُوَ مُحْتَبٍ بِبُرْدَةٍ قَدْ وَقَعَ هُدْبُهَا عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَجْفُو عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ فَعَلِّمْنِي قَالَ اتَّقِ اللهَ وَلَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَإِيَّاكَ وَالْمَخِيلَةَ فَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ وَإِنْ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ وَعَيَّرَكَ بِأَمْرٍ يَعْلَمُهُ فِيكَ فَلَا تُعَيِّرْهُ بِأَمْرٍ تَعْلَمُهُ فِيهِ فَيَكُونَ لَكَ أَجْرُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ إِثْمُهُ وَلَا تَشْتُمَنَّ أَحَدًا

[AI] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert, so teach us something that Allah may benefit us with." He ﷺ replied, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is just scooping water from your bucket into the vessel of someone seeking water. And if you speak to your brother, face him with a relaxed countenance. And beware of dragging your garment, for it is from pride, and Allah does not love pride. And if a person insults you for something they know about you, do not insult them for something you know about them. Surely, the reward is yours and the harm is upon the one who said it."

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فَعَلِّمْنَا شَيْئًا يَنْفَعُنَا اللهُ بِهِ قَالَ لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَلَوْ أَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ إِلَيْهِ مُنْبَسِطٌ وَإِيَّاكَ وَتَسْبِيلَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْخُيَلَاءِ وَالْخُيَلَاءُ لَا يُحِبُّهَا اللهُ وَإِنْ امْرُؤٌ سَبَّكَ بِمَا يَعْلَمُ فِيكَ فَلَا تَسُبَّهُ بِمَا تَعْلَمُ فِيهِ فَإِنَّ أَجْرَهُ لَكَ وَوَبَالَهُ عَلَى مَنْ قَالَهُ

[AI] "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was wearing a cloak and its fringes had fallen on his feet. So, I said, 'Which one of you is Muhammad? Or is it the Messenger of Allah?' He pointed to himself with his hand, and I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am from the people of the desert and they treat me badly. Advise me.' He said, 'Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if you meet your brother with a cheerful face while you empty your bucket into his container to fetch water. And if someone insults you with something they know about you, do not insult them with something you know about them, for then it will be their burden and reward on you. And beware of letting your garment hang below your ankles, for indeed, letting the garment hang below the ankles is from arrogance. And Allah does not love arrogance. And do not abuse anyone, for I have not abused anyone since the day I was given revelation, and neither a sheep nor a camel."

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُحْتَبٍ بِشَمْلَةٍ لَهُ وَقَدْ وَقَعَ هُدْبُهَا عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ أَوْ رَسُولُ اللهِ فَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ وَفِيَّ جَفَاؤُهُمْ فَأَوْصِنِي فَقَالَ لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ مُنْبَسِطٌ وَلَوْ أَنْتُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَإِنْ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ بِمَا يَعْلَمُ فِيكَ فَلَا تَشْتُمْهُ بِمَا تَعْلَمُ فِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَكُونُ لَكَ أَجْرُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهُ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ وَلَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا فَمَا سَبَبْتُ بَعْدَهُ أَحَدًا وَلَا شَاةً وَلَا بَعِيرًا

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what should I supplicate?" He said, "Supplicate to Allah alone, who, if you are afflicted with harm, you supplicate to Him and He removes it from you. And who, if you are lost in a barren land, you supplicate to Him and He guides you back. And who, if a year of famine befalls you, you supplicate to Him and He brings forth for you. I said, "Then advise me." He said, "Do not verbally abuse anyone, and do not underestimate any good deed, even if it is as small as meeting your brother with a smiling face. And even if you empty your bucket into the vessel of one who seeks water. And even if you gird your garment to half of your shin. If you are able to do more, then to the ankles. And beware of trailing your garment, for trailing the garment is from arrogance. And indeed, Allah does not love arrogance."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِلَامَ تَدْعُو؟ قَالَ أَدْعُو إِلَى اللهِ وَحْدَهُ الَّذِي إِنْ مَسَّكَ ضُرٌّ فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَ عَنْكَ وَالَّذِي إِنْ ضَلَلْتَ بِأَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ دَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ وَالَّذِي إِنْ أَصَابَتْكَ سَنَةٌ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَأَوْصِنِي قَالَ لَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا وَلَا تَزْهَدَنَّ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ وَجْهُكَ وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَائْتَزِرْ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ

[AI] He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or he said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and a man came to him and said: Are you the Messenger of Allah? Or he said: Are you Muhammad? He said: Yes. He said: What do you call for? He said: I call to worship Allah alone. If you are afflicted with harm, you call upon Him to remove it from you. And if you are afflicted with a year of drought, you call upon Him to bring forth crops for you. And if you are in a barren land and you go astray, you call upon Him to guide you back. He said: So the man embraced Islam. Then he said: Advise me, O Messenger of Allah! He said: Do not revile anything or anyone, for the judge may become doubtful. He said: I have never reviled a camel or a sheep since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ advised me. And do not disdain good deeds, even if it is just by extending your face towards your brother while speaking to him. And empty your bucket into the container of the one seeking water. And tie your garment below the halfway point of your leg. And if you refuse, then below the calves. And be wary of dragging your garment, for it is a sign of arrogance. And Allah does not love arrogance.

أَنَّهُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ قَالَ شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ أَوْ قَالَ أَنْتَ مُحَمَّدٌ ؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِلَامَ تَدْعُو؟ قَالَ أَدْعُو إِلَى اللهِ وَحْدَهُ مَنْ إِذَا كَانَ بِكَ ضُرٌّ فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَهُ عَنْكَ وَمَنْ إِذَا أَصَابَكَ عَامُ سَنَةٍ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَ لَكَ وَمَنْ إِذَا كُنْتَ فِي أَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ فَأَضْلَلْتَ فَدَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَأَسْلَمَ الرَّجُلُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَوْصِنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ لَا تَسُبَّنَّ شَيْئًا أَوْ قَالَ أَحَدًا شَكَّ الْحَكَمُ قَالَ فَمَا سَبَبْتُ شَيْئًا بَعِيرًا وَلَا شَاةً مُنْذُأَوْصَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا تَزْهَدْ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَوْ بِبَسْطِ وَجْهِكَ إِلَى أَخِيكَ وَأَنْتَ تُكَلِّمُهُ وَأَفْرِغْ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَاتَّزِرْ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَاللهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ

[AI] I approached the Prophetﷺ while he was wearing a cloak, and its hem was touching his feet. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, advise me." He said, "You should be mindful of Allah and not belittle any act of goodness, even if it is just pouring water from your bucket into the vessel of the one who seeks water, and you should speak kindly to your brother while facing him with a smiling face. And beware of tucking your garment beneath your knees [out of pride], as this is from arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. If someone criticizes you for something he knows about you, do not criticize him for something you know about him. Let him be with his own faults, and his retribution will be upon himself. And do not curse anyone." Then I did not insult any living being after that (Saheeh Muslim).

انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُحْتَبٌ فِي بُرْدَةٍ لَهُ وَإِنَّ هُدْبَهَا لَعَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوْصِنِي قَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِاتِّقَاءِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَقِي وَتُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ إِلَيْهِ مُنْبَسِطٌ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَلَا يُحِبُّهَا اللَّهُ وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ عَيَّرَكَ بِشَيْءٍ يَعْلَمُهُ فِيكَ فَلَا تُعَيِّرْهُ بِشَيْءٍ تَعْلَمُهُ مِنْهُ دَعْهُ يَكُونُ وَبَالُهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَجْرُهُ لَكَ وَلَا تَسُبَّنَّ شَيْئًا» قَالَ فَمَا سَبَبْتُ بَعْدَهُ دَابَّةً وَلَا إِنْسَانًا

[AI] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert. Teach us something that will benefit us with Allah." He said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is pouring the water from your bucket into the vessel of someone seeking water. And if you talk to your brother with a relaxed face while facing him, and beware of dragging your garment below the ankles, for it is from arrogance and Allah does not like it. And if someone speaks ill of you with something that he knows about you, do not retaliate with something that you know about him, for his reward will be upon you and his sin will be upon him."

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فَعَلِّمْنَا شَيْئًا يَنْفَعُنَا اللَّهُ بِهِ فقَالَ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَلَوْ أَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ إِلَيْهِ مُنْبَسِطٌ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَلَا يُحِبُّهَا اللَّهُ وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ بِمَا يَعْلَمُ فِيكَ فَلَا تَشْتُمْهُ بِمَا تَعْلَمُ فِيهِ فَإِنَّ أَجْرَهُ لَكَ وَوَبَالَهُ عَلَى مَنْ قَالَهُ»

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert and we would like you to teach us a deed that may benefit us from Allah." He said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is pouring the water from your bucket into the vessel of the one who fetches water or speaking to your brother with a cheerful face."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فَنُحِبُّ أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنَا عَمَلًا لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَنَا بِهِ؟ قَالَ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَلَوْ أَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ»

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert and we would like for you to teach us an action that Allah may benefit us with." He said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is to pour from your bucket into the container of the one seeking water, or to speak to your brother while your face is cheerful towards him."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فَنُحِبُّ أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنَا عَمَلًا لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَنَا بِهِ؟ قَالَ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَلَوْ أَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ»

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert and we would like you to teach us a good deed that Allah may benefit us with." He replied, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is emptying the water from your bucket into the vessel of the one who needs it, or speaking to your brother with a cheerful face."

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ فَنُحِبُّ أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنَا عَمَلًا لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَنَا بِهِ؟ قَالَ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَلَوْ أَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ»

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was wearing a robe with its hem folded up and the edges of it were touching his feet. So I asked, "Which one of you is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah?" He pointed with his hand to himself. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I am from the Bedouin and I have mistreated them. Please advise me." He said, "Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it is to meet your brother with a cheerful face. And even if you empty the water from your bucket into the drinking bowl of someone who seeks water. And if someone insults you with something that is true about you, do not insult him with what you know about him, for you will have the reward and he will bear the sin of it. And beware of letting your garment drag on the ground, for dragging the garment is a sign of arrogance. And indeed, Allah does not love arrogance. And do not curse anyone afterwards, for I have not cursed anyone, neither a sheep nor a camel."

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُحْتَبٍ بِشَمْلَةٍ قَدْ وَقَعَ هُدْبُهَا عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ أَيُّكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ فَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ وَفِيَّ جَفَاؤُهُمْ فَأَوْصِنِي؟ قَالَ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَوَجْهُكَ مُبْسَطٌ وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ بِمَا فِيكَ فَلَا تَشْتُمْهُ بِمَا تَعْلَمُ فِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَكُونُ لَكَ أَجْرُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهُ» وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ وَلَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا فَمَا سَبَبْتُ بَعْدَهُ أَحَدًا وَلَا شَاةً وَلَا بَعِيرًا

I saw a man whose opinion was accepted by the people, and whatever he said they submitted to it. I asked: Who is he? They said: This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: On you be peace, Messenger of Allah, twice. He said: Do not say "On you be peace," for "On you be peace" is a greeting for the dead, but say "Peace be upon you". I asked: You are the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon you)? He said: I am the Messenger of Allah Whom you call when a calamity befalls you and He removes it; when you suffer from drought and you call Him, He grows food for you; and when you are in a desolate land or in a desert and your she-camel strays and you call Him, He returns it to you. I said: Give me some advice. He said: Do not abuse anyone. He said that he did not abuse a freeman, or a slave, or a camel or a sheep thenceforth. He said: Do not look down upon any good work, and when you speak to your brother, show him a cheerful face. This is a good work. Have your lower garment halfway down your shin; if you cannot do it, have it up to the ankles. Beware of trailing the lower garment, for it is conceit and Allah does not like conceit. And if a man abuses and shames you for something which he finds in you, then do not shame him for something which you find in him; he will bear the evil consequences for it. [AI] I heard about the Prophet ﷺ, so I called for my mount and said, "I will come to this man so that I may listen to something from him." So I went to him and found him sitting, wrapped in a cloak. I heard him answering a questioner, saying, "Do not belittle any act of goodness, even if it is to pour water from your bucket into the vessel of one who seeks water, and be cautious of accusing others and making false statements about them. If someone slanders you or says something untrue about you, do not retaliate with slander or say something about them that is not true. Instead, you will earn his reward and the burden will be on him. Do not curse anyone." Therefore, since I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding cursing, I have not cursed any camel, sheep, or person.

سَمِعْتُ بِالنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَدَعَوْتُ بِرَاحِلَتِي فَقُلْتُ لَآتِيَنَّ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ فَلَأَسْمَعَنَّ مِنْهُ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَوَجَدْتُهُ قَاعِدًا مُحْتَبِيًا فِي بُرْدَةٍ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَرُدُّ عَلَى السَّائِلِ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تَصُبَّ مِنْ فَضْلِ دَلْوِكِ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ أَوْ قَالَ مَا لَيْسَ فِيكَ فَلَا تَشْتُمْهُ وَلَا تَقُلْ لَهُ مَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ فَيَكُونَ لَكَ أَجْرُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ وَبَالُهُ لَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا» فَمَا سَبَبْتُ شَيْئًا بَعِيرًا وَلَا شَاةً وَلَا إِنْسَانًا مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ السَّبِّ

[AI] "He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, I asked him to advise me. He said, 'Do not curse anyone, do not belittle acts of kindness even if you speak to your brother while your face is relaxed towards him, or even if you empty your bucket in the vessel of one seeking rainwater, and perform the practice of tucking up your lower garment. If you refuse, then do it with your calves; and beware of draping the garment below the ankles, for indeed draping it below the ankles is an indication of arrogance. Surely, Allah does not love arrogance.'"

أَنَّهُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَوْصِنِي قَالَ «لَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا وَلَا تَزْهَدْ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ وَلَوْ أن تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِكَ وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ بِدَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَاتَّزِرْ إلى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فإن إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ»

[AI] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the Badia (desert) and we would like for you to teach us a deed that may benefit us with it." He said, "Do not belittle any act of goodness, even if you were to empty your bucket into the vessel of the one collecting water, and even if you were to speak to your brother with a cheerful face, and beware of trailing your garment, for indeed this is from arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And if a man insults you with something that he knows about you, do not insult him with something that you know about him. For indeed, his reward for that will be upon him, and his sin will be upon you."

عَنْ رَأْيِهِ لَا يَقُولُ شَيْئًا إِلَّا صَدَرُوا عَنْهُ قُلْتُ مَنْ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ قَالَ لَا تَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَيِّتِ قُلِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالَ أَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ الَّذِي إِذَا أَصَابَكَ ضُرٌّ فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَهُ عَنْكَ وَإِنْ أَصَابَكَ عَامُ سَنَةٍ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَهَا لَكَ وَإِذَا كُنْتَ بِأَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ أَوْ فَلَاةٍ فَضَّلَتْ رَاحِلَتُكَ فَدَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّهَا عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ اعْهَدْ إِلِيَّ قَالَ لَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا قَالَ فَمَا سَبَبْتُ بَعْدَهُ حُرًّا وَلَا عَبْدًا وَلَا بَعِيرًا وَلَا شَاةً قَالَ وَلَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَأَنْ تُكَلِّمَ أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ وَجْهُكَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَارْفَعْ إِزَارَكَ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبْيَتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ وَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَتَمَكَ وَعَيَّرَكَ بِمَا يَعْلَمُ فِيكَ فَلَا تُعَيِّرْهُ بِمَا تَعْلَمُ فِيهِ فَإِنَّمَا وَبَالُ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ

("اتق الله ولا تحقرنَّ من المعروف شيئًا، ولو أن تلقى أخاك ووجهُك منبسطٌ إليه، ولو أن تُفرِغ من دلوك في إناء المستسقِى، ولا تسبَّن أحدًا، وإن امرؤٌ شَتَمَك بما يعلمُ فيك فلا تشتُمْه بما تعلمُ فيه، فإنه يكون لك أجرُه وعليه وزرُه، وائتزر إلى نصفِ الساقِ، فإن أبيت فإلى الكعبين، وإياك وإسبالَ الإزارِ، فإن إسبالَ الإزارِ من المخيلة، وإن الله تعالى لا يحبُّ المخِيلة".

ط، حم، ن، د، والبغوي، والباوردى، طب، حب، حل، هب، ض عن أبي جَرىّ جابر بن سليم، ويقال: سليم بن جابر الهجيمِى (في الصغير بتقديم وتأخير واختصار وزيادة، وعزاه الطيالسي، وابن حبان عن جابر المذكور، ولفظه: اتق الله ولا تحقرن من المعروف شيئًا، ولو أن تفرغ من دلوك في إناء المستسقى، وأن تلقى أخاك ووجهُك إليه منبسطٌ، وإياك وإسبالَ الإزارِ، فإن إِسبال الإزار من المخيلة، ولا يحبُّها اللهُ، وإن امرؤٌ شتمك وعَيَّرك بأمر ليس هو فيك، فلا تعيِّره بأمرٍ هو فيه، ودعه يكون وباله عليه، وأجره لك ولا تسبن أحدًا".

"لَا تَسُبَّنَّ شَيئًا، وَلَا تَزْهَدْ في الْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَوْ يَنْبَسِطُ وَجْهُكَ إِلَى أَخِيكَ وَأَنْتَ تُكَلِّمُهُ، وَأَفْرغْ مِنْ دَلْوكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي، وَاتَّزِرْ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ، فَإِنْ أَبَيتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَينِ، وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَال الإِزَارِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ، وَالله لا يُحِبُّ الْمَخيلَةَ".
