that he Prophet ﷺ sent him to Yemen, and he asked him about drinks that were made there. He asked, “What are they?” He replied, *“Bit' and Mizr.” I said to Abu Burdah, “What is Bit‘?” He said, “It is honey wine, and Mizr is barley wine.” So he said, “Every intoxicant is forbidden.”

2.47 The Stomach is the Worst of Things to be Filled-up

from al-Miqdam b. Madi Karb: "No vessel can fill a person worse than his stomach...," narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Nasai, and Ibn Majah. Tirmidhi said it is a Hasan.

This Hadith was recorded by Imam Ahmad and Tirmidhi from the narration of Yahya b. Jabir al-Tai from al-Miqdam. It was also recorded by Nasai from the same chain and another chain narrated by Salih b. Yahya b. al-Miqdam from his grandfather. Ibn Majah recorded it from another route, and there are other chains as well.

The worst vessel to fill is the stomach

(47a) ahmad:17186Abū al-Mughīrah > Sulaymān b. Sulaym al-Kinānī > Yaḥyá b. Jābir al-Ṭāʾī > al-Miqdām b. Maʿdī Karib al-Kindī

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The son of Adan does not fill any vessel that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath."

One should eat only what is sufficient for his well-being

(47b) tirmidhi:2380Sūwayd b. Naṣr > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Mubārak > Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh > Abū Salamah al-Ḥimṣī and Ḥabīb b. Ṣāliḥ > Yaḥyá b. Jābir al-Ṭāʾī > Miqdām b. Maʿdī Karib

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The human being does not fill any vessel that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath."

Ḥasan b. ʿArafah > Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh narrated the same. It is also narrated by Miqdām b. Maʿdīkarib from the Prophet ﷺ and "I heard from the Prophet ﷺ" is not mentioned in that narration. Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ.

(47c) nasai-kubra:6739Muḥammad b. Salamah > Ibn Wahb > Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ > Yaḥyá b. Jābir > al-Miqdām b. Maʿdī Karib

that the Prophet ﷺ said: “No vessel is worse than the stomach. It is sufficient for a Muslim to have a few bites that keep his back upright. But if he must, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath.”

2.48 Four Traits of a Hypocrite

from Abdullah b. Amr: "Four traits if found in a person, they would be a hypocrite...," narrated by Bukhari and Muslim.

This hadith was mentioned in the two Sahihs from the narration of al-Amash, from Abdullah b. Murrah, from Masruq, from Abdullah b. Amr bin al-As. It was also mentioned in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays." In a narration by Muslim: "Even if he fasts, prays, and claims to be a Muslim." In another narration, he also said: "Among the signs of a hypocrite are three." This has also been narrated from the Prophet ﷺ in various other ways.

Four traits found in a hypocrite

(48a) bukhari:2459Bishr b. Khālid > Muḥammad > Shuʿbah > Sulaymān > ʿAbdullāh b. Murrah > Masrūq > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

from the Prophet ﷺ said: “There are four traits, whoever has them is a hypocrite,” or “whoever has one of the four has a trait of hypocrisy until he gives it up: (1) when he speaks, he lies; (2) when he makes a promise, he breaks it; (3) when he makes a covenant, he betrays it; and (4) when he disputes, he behaves wickedly.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There are four traits; whoever has them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has a trait of hypocrisy until he gives it up: (1) when he speaks, he lies; (2) when he makes a covenant, he betrays it; (3) when he makes a promise, he breaks it; (4) when he argues, he becomes obscene.”

2.49 Having Trust in Allah ﷻ

From Umar ibn al-Khattab: "If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds..." This was narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and by al-Hakim. Tirmidhi said it is Hasan-Sahih.

This hadith has been reported by all of them from the narration of Abdullah b. Hubayra, who heard from Abu Tamim al-Jayshani, who heard Umar b. al-Khattab narrate it from the Prophet ﷺ. Abu Tamim and Abdullah b. Hubayra were both acknowledged by Muslim, and have been regarded as trustworthy by more than one ˹source˺. Abu Tamim was born during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ and migrated to Medina during the time of Umar ᴿᴬ. This hadith was also narrated from Ibn Umar from the Prophet ﷺ, but its chain of transmission includes someone whose status is unknown. This was mentioned by Abu Hatim al-Razi.

If you put your trust in Allah he will provide as He provides for the birds

2.50 Constant Remembrance of Allah ﷻ

from Abdullah b. Busr: "Let you tongue remain moist from the remembrance of Allah," narrated by Ahmed narrated this with this wording.

It was also recorded by Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, with similar meaning. Tirmidhi remarked: Hasan-Gharib; all of them recorded it from the narration of Amr b. Qays al-Kindi, from Abdullah b. Busr. Ibn Hibban also recorded in his Sahih and others from the narration of Muadh b. Jabal, who said: The last thing I parted with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was when I said to him: Which deeds are best and closest to Allah? He said: "That you die while your tongue is moist with the remembrance of Allah ﷻ."

Remember Allah constantly to make up for your shortcomings

Two Bedouins came to the Prophet ﷺ. One of them said, “Who are the best of men, O Muhammad?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “The one whose life is long and whose deeds are good.”

The other said, “The laws of Islam have become many for us; is there a comprehensive gate we can hold fast to?” He said: “Let your tongue never cease to be moist with the remembrance of Allah.”

(50b) tirmidhi:3375Abū Kurayb > Zayd b. Ḥubāb > Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ > ʿAmr b. Qays > ʿAbdullāh b. Busr

A man said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, indeed, the legislated acts of Islam have become too much for me, so inform me of a thing that I should stick to.” He ﷺ said: “Let not your tongue cease to be moist with the remembrance of Allah.”

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Gharīb in this particular context.
