that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in the Year of the Conquest, while he was in Makkah: “Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of alcohol, carrion, swine, and idols.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, what about the fat of carrion? For ships are coated with it, hides are oiled with it, and people use it for lighting ˹fire˺.” He said: “No, it is unlawful.”

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said at that time: “May Allah curse the Jews: when Allah forbade their fats, they melted them down, then sold them, and consumed its price.”

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ بَيْعَ الْخَمْرِ، وَالْمَيْتَةِ، وَالْخِنْزِيرِ، وَالْأَصْنَامِ». فَقِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ شُحُومَ الْمَيْتَةِ؟ فَإِنَّهَا يُطْلَى بِهَا السُّفُنُ، وَيُدْهَنُ بِهَا الْجُلُودُ، وَيَسْتَصْبِحُ بِهَا النَّاسُ. فَقَالَ: «لَا، هُوَ حَرَامٌ».

ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ: «قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمَّا حَرَّمَ شُحُومَهَا جَمَلُوهُ، ثُمَّ بَاعُوهُ، فَأَكَلُوا ثَمَنَهُ».

"Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of alcohol, dead meat, pigs and idols." It was said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of their fat of dead animals, for it is used to caulk ships, it is daubed on animal skins, and people use it to light their lamps?" He said: "No, it is unlawful." "Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, dead animals, pigs and idols." It was said: "O messenger of Allah, what do you thing about the fat of the dead animal, for ships are caulked with it, skins are daubed with it and people use it in their lamps." He said: "No, it is Haram." And the Messenger of Allah then said: "My Allah curse the Jews, for when Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, forbade the meat (of dead animals) to them, they melted it down and sold it, and consumed its price."

That during the Year of the Conquest, while he was in Makkah, he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Indeed Allah and His Messenger unlawful the sale of wine, dead carcasses, the pig, and idols." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! What about the fat of carcasses? For indeed it is used to coat the ships, skins are oiled with it, and people use it for lamps?" He said: "No. It is unlawful." Then, with that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah fight (curse) the Jews! Indeed Allah made the fat unlawful for them, they melted it, sold it, and consumed its price." I heard Jabir bin 'Abdullah say: "In the Year of the Conquest, while he was in Makkah the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: 'Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wines, meat of dead animals, pigs and 'idols.' It was said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of the fat of dead animals, for it is used to caulk ships, it is daubed on animal skins and people use it to light their lamps?' He said: 'No, it is unlawful.' [Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say on the day of the conquest of Mecca: "Indeed, Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of pigs, dead animals, and idols." A man then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about the fat of dead animals? We use it to grease our skins and ship hulls, and we use it for lighting." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "May Allah fight the Jews! Indeed, Allah has forbidden them from using the fat of dead animals, so they melted it down, sold it, and consumed its price."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ إِنَّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ بَيْعَ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْتَةِ وَالْخِنْزِيرِ وَالْأَصْنَامِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ شُحُومَ الْمَيْتَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يُدْهَنُ بِهَا السِّقَاءُ وَالْجُلُودُ وَيَسْتَصْبِحُ بِهَا النَّاسُ قَالَ لَا هِيَ حَرَامٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ قَاتَلَ اللهُ الْيَهُودَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَمَّا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ شُحُومَهَا أَجْمَلُوهُ ثُمَّ بَاعُوهُ فَأَكَلُوا ثَمَنَهُ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَمِنَ الْعُلَمَاءِ مَنْ فَرَّقَ بَيْنَ الْمَيْتَةِ وَبَيْنَ مَا نَجُسَ بِوُقُوعِ نَجَاسَةٍ فِيهِ فَأَبَاحَ الِانْتِفَاعَ بِمَا نَجُسَ حَادِثًا دُونَ الْمَيْتَةِ اتِّبَاعًا لِلْآثَارِ فِيهِمَا وَبِأَنَّ نَجَاسَةَ الْمَيْتَةِ أَغْلَظُ وَنَجَاسَةَ الزَّيْتِ أَخَفُّ وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ

" عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ بَيعَ الْخَمْرِ، والْخَنَازِيرِ، والْمَيْتَةِ، وَالأَصْنَامِ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: يَارَسُولَ اللهِ! مَا تَرَى فِى شُحُومٍ الْمَيْتَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يُدْهَنُ بِهَا السُّفُنُ والْجُلُودُ وَيُسْتَصْبَحُ بِهَا؟ قَالَ: قَاتَلَ الله الْيَهُودَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَمَّا حرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ شُحُومَهَا أَخَذُوهَا فَجَمَلُوهَا (*) ثُمَّ بَاعُوهَا وَأَكَلُوا أَثْمَانَهَا ".
