12. Book of Zakāh (1/3)
[Machine] "People used to seek good omens by examining the characteristics of their fruits. So Allah, the Almighty, revealed the following verse: 'Do not seek to gain evil omens from it that you may spend your wealth, while you know its harm; and you will not obtain anything except that you overlook its evil.' [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:267] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prohibited seeking omens from two things: the jujube fruit and the hubeiq fruit."
"Sahl bin Abi Hathmah came to us when we were in the market and said: "The Messenger of Allah said: When you have estimated, take two-thirds (of the portion you have estimated as Zakah) and leave one-third, and if you do not take (two-thirds) or leave one-third. (One of the reporters) Shu 'bah doubted - leave one quarter." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2491)
[Machine] And he said: "When you come to a land, cultivate it and leave for them what they eat."
[Machine] A man from the Banu 'Amir passed by him, and it was said, "This man is one of the wealthiest people." Abu Huraira called him and asked him about that. It was said, "Yes, I have a hundred red camels, and I have a hundred black camels, and I have such and such a number of sheep." Abu Huraira said, "Beware of exaggerating in your camels and your sheep. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'No man has camels, and he does not fulfill their rights regarding their food and water, their crossings, their difficulties and ease, except that a bald spot appears on his head, and he comes walking on his feet as a result of the camels walking on his feet. Whenever they pass, the last ones are sent back to him before the first ones on a day whose duration is fifty thousand years, until Allah judges between people, and he sees his path. And there is no servant who possesses cows and does not fulfill their rights regarding their food and water, their good condition, and their signs of health, except that a bald spot appears on his head, and he comes walking on his feet as a result of the cows walking on his feet. Whenever they pass, the last ones are sent back to him before the first ones on a day whose duration is fifty thousand years, until Allah judges between people, and he sees his path.'” Abbas said to him, "What are the rights of the camels, O Abu Huraira?" He said, "They should be given the best, they should be given water abundantly, they should be fattened, their backs should be protected, and they should be given milk."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to take charity from the pre-Islamic treasures and he gave Bilal ibn al-Harith an agate. When Umar came, he said to Bilal, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ didn't give you this agate to keep it away from the people. He only gave it to you so that you could work with it." Umar then cut the agate for the people. Bukhari and Muslim both narrated this incident.
the Messenger of Allah sent a man from Banu Makhzun to collect charity, so he said to Abu Rafi: "Accompany me so that perhaps you may have some of it." So he said: "Not until I ask the Messenger of Allah." So he went to the Prophet to ask him, and he said: "Charity is not lawful for us, and to be the Mawda of a people to be the same as them." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 657)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The person who hoards will not enter Paradise." Yazid bin Harun said, "He means the one who engages in usury."
[Machine] Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ was in her house with some of his companions talking when a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, how much charity is required for such and such amount of dates?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "For such and such amount of dates, this much charity is required." Then the man said, "Indeed, so-and-so has wronged me and took from me such and such amount, increasing it by a sa' (a unit of measurement)." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "So what would you do if someone does more harm to you than this harm?" The people became engaged in the conversation and the narrative became fascinating, until a man among them said, "O Messenger of Allah, if a man who is absent from you takes care of his camels, his livestock, and his crops, and pays his Zakat (obligatory charity) on them, but his rights are violated, what should he do while he is absent?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever pays his Zakat with good intention, seeking the face of Allah and the Hereafter, and does not keep anything hidden from his wealth, and establishes the prayer and pays the Zakat, then if his rights are violated, he should take his weapon and fight, and if he is killed, he is a martyr."
[Machine] Al-Umari informed me that it wouldn't matter to you if you gained weight, and who before you would become lean, and who before me. And with God's assistance, Amr wrote: Peace be upon you. Afterward, I am here for you. A flock of camels has come to you, the first of which is with you, and the last of which is with me. Although I hope to find two ways to carry in the sea. When the first flock arrived, he called Zubair and said, "Go out with the first flock and face it tomorrow. Carry to each household what you can carry to me, and if you are unable to carry it, pass each household with a camel with what is on it, and let them dress people like we dressed them, and let them slaughter the camel, carry its hair, arrange its meat, and tan its skin. Then let them take a bowl of dough and a bowl of fat, and a handful of flour. So let them cook and eat until Allah brings them sustenance." Zubair refused to go out and said, "By Allah, you won't find anything like it until you leave this world." Then he called another person, who I think is Talha, and he came. Then he called Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, and he participated in that. When he returned, he sent him one thousand dinars. Abu Ubaidah said, "I didn't do this for you, son of Khattab. I only did it for Allah, and I don't take anything in return for it." Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us some things that we were hesitant about, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ insisted on them. Accept it, O man, and seek assistance from it in your worldly affairs." Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah accepted it.

The Prophet ﷺ as saying: When we appoint someone to an administrative post and provide him with an allowance, anything he takes beyond that is unfaithful dealing. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2943)
Al-Mustawrid heard the Prophet ﷺ say: He who acts as an employee for us must get a wife; if he has not a servant, he must get one, and if he has not a dwelling, he must get one. He said that Abu Bakr reported: I was told that the Prophet ﷺ said: He who takes anything else he is unfaithful or thief. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2945)
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The official who collects sadaqah (zakat) in a just manner is like him who fights in Allah's path till he returns home. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2936)
[Machine] Sufyan used to pray with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, facing both Qiblas. He said, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "The best charity is that given by a person with surplus wealth to his relatives."
the Messenger of Allah said: “Charity given to the poor is charity, and that given to a relative is two things: charity and upholding the ties of kinship.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1844)
the Messenger of Allah said: “Charity is not permissible for a rich person, or for one who is strong and healthy. ” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1839)
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he said: "Charity is not permissible for a wealthy person or for one who is capable." This is what Ath-Thawri and Shu'bah said, and in the narration of Ibrahim ibn Sa'd, it is mentioned as "fair."
The Prophet ﷺ said: He who begs (from people) when he is affluent will come on the Day of Resurrection with scrapes, scratchings, or lacerations on his face. He was asked: What constitutes affluence, Messenger of Allah? He replied:It is fifty dirhams or its value in gold. The narrator Yahya said: Abdullah ibn Sufyan said to Sufyan: I remember that Shu'bah does not narrate from Hakim ibn Jubayr. Sufyan said: Zubayr transmitted to us this tradition from Muhammad ibn AbdurRahman ibn Yazid. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1626)
The Prophet ﷺ said: Sadaqah may not be given to rich man, with the exception of five classes: One who fights in Allah's path, or who collects it, or a debtor, or a man who buys it with his money, or a man who has a poor neighbour who has been given sadaqah and gives a present to the rich man. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1635)
[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi praised what was narrated from Malik, from Zaid ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Donations are only permissible for five [purposes]." He mentioned this hadith in a condition in his sermon that it is authentic. Malik could send in the hadith and receive it, or he could transmit it from someone trustworthy. The saying about it is the saying of the trustworthy one who transmits and attributes it.

The Prophet ﷺ said: If one who is afflicted with poverty refers it to me, his poverty will not be brought to an end; but if one refers it to Allah, He will soon give him sufficiency, either by a speedy death or by a sufficiency which comes later. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1645)
The Prophet ﷺ said: Hands are of three types: Allah's hand is the upper one; the bestower's hand is the one near it; the beggar's hand is the lower one. So bestow what is surplus, and do not submit yourself to the demand of your soul. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1649)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Hands are of three types, one is spread out till the end of the Hadith."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are three hands of Allah: the upper hand of Allah, the giving hand that follows it, and the lower hand of the one who seeks help, until the Day of Resurrection. So, refrain from asking as much as you can."
When this verse was revealed: "And those who hoard gold and silver," the Muslims were grieved about it. Umar said: I shall dispel your care. He, therefore, went and said: Prophet of Allah, your Companions were grieved by this verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah has made zakat obligatory simply to purify your remaining property, and He made inheritances obligatory that they might come to those who survive you. Umar then said: Allah is most great. He then said to him: Let me inform you about the best a man hoards; it is a virtuous woman who pleases him when he looks at her, obeys him when he gives her a command, and guards his interests when he is away from her. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1664)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed the sadaqah (alms) relating to the breaking of the fast as a purification of the fasting from empty and obscene talk and as food for the poor. If anyone pays it before the prayer (of 'Id), it will be accepted as zakat. If anyone pays it after the prayer, that will be a sadaqah like other sadaqahs (alms). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1609)
[Machine] "People used to give Zakat al-Fitr during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may peace be upon him, as a saa' of dates or a saa' of barley or a saa' of raisins or a saa' of wheat."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "When he (referring to Prophet Muhammad) mandated the payment of Zakat al-Fitr, he ordered to give a Sa'a (a measure) of dates or a Sa'a of barley, and nothing else was to be given as Zakat al-Fitr except dates."
Qais bin Sa'ad said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined Sadaqatul-Fitr upon is before (the command of) Zakat was revealed. He neither ordered us (to pay) nor forbade us (from paying it), so we did it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1828)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered loudly from the belly of Makkah, proclaiming that the Zakat al-Fitr is an obligatory duty upon every Muslim, whether young or old, male or female, free or slave, present or absent. It is to be given in a measure of barley or dates.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of giving charity during Ramadan, with each person being urged to give a saa' (a measurement) of dates, barley, or wheat.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ made it incumbent on all the slave or free Muslims, male or female, to pay one Sa' of dates or barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1504)
[Machine] Abu Sa'id mentioned to him the payment of Zakat al-Fitr, so he said, "I will not give except what I used to give during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which is a sa' of dates or a sa' of barley or a sa' of wheat or a sa' of raisins." Then a man from the people or a debtor from the wheat said to him, "What about the value of Mu'awiyah? Will you not accept it or deal with it?" He replied, "That is not the value of Mu'awiyah. I neither accept it nor deal with it." These are the chains of narrations that I mentioned in relation to the mention of the measurement of barley. All of them are authentic, and the most famous of them is the hadith of Abu Mas'har from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar, which we have high regard for. However, I left it because it is not a condition of the book. It was also narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib.
[Machine] "On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said regarding the Zakat al-Fitr (charity given at the end of Ramadan): 'For every free person, whether young or old, and for every slave, a saa' (measurement) of wheat or a saa' of dates.' 'This is transmitted from Ali and others have confirmed it.'"
Abu Dawud said “I heard Muhammad bin Isa narrating this tradition who said Mu’tamar narrated it to us. And he (Mu’tamar) said “ I heard Al Hakam bin Aban narrating this tradition. He did not mention the name of Ibn ‘Abbas. Abu Dawud said “Al Hussain bin Huraith wrote to me saying “Al Fadl bin Musa narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas to the same effect from the Prophet ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2225)
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ delivered a sermon and said, "Whoever has food should give charity with a sa' [unit of measurement] of wheat, barley, dates, flour, raisins, or salt."
[Machine] She informed him that they used to give Zakat al-Fitr during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in the measure that sustains the household or the measure that sustains them individually. The people of Madinah all used to do that.
If anyone guarantees me that he will not beg from people, I will guarantee him Paradise. Thawban said : I (will not beg). He never asked anyone for anything. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1643)
‘Abd al-Rahman bin Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Is there anyone of you who provided food to a poor man today? Abu Bakr said I entered the mosque where a beggar was begging ; I found a piece of bread in the hand of ‘Abdal-Rahman which I took and gave it to him (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1670)
The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone seeks protection in Allah's name, grant him protection; if anyone begs in Allah's name, give him something; if anyone gives you an invitation, accept it; and if anyone does you a kindness, recompense him; but if you have not the means to do so, pray for him until you feel that you have compensated him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1672)
[Machine] Thanaa Jarir, and as for the story of Abdul Aziz ibn Muslim
[Machine] About Mujahid and with Al-A'mash, there is another authentic chain that meets their conditions.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever asks you for something in the name of Allah, give it to him, and whoever seeks refuge with you in the name of Allah, grant him refuge, and whoever invites you, respond to him." This is a sound chain of narration, as it has been authenticated by both Al-A'mash and the two sheikhs, and we adhere to our principle of accepting additional trustworthy narrators in the chains of transmission and texts.
While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a man brought him some gold equal in weight to an egg, and said: Messenger of Allah, I have got this from a mine; take it; it is sadaqah. I have no more than this. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his attention from him. Then he came to him from his right side and repeated the same words. But he (the Prophet) turned his attention from him. He then came to him from his left side and repeated the same words. But he (again) turned his attention from him. He then came to him from behind. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and threw it away. Had it hit him, it would have hurt him or wounded him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: One of you brings all that he possesses and says: This is sadaqah. Then he sits down and spreads his hand before the people. The best sadaqah is that which leaves a competence. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1673)
A man entered the mosque. The Prophet ﷺ commanded the people to throw their clothes as sadaqah. Thereupon they threw their clothes (as sadaqah). He then asked him to take two clothes from them. He reprimanded him and said: Take your clothe. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1675)
Abu Hurairah reported I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ, What kind of sadaqah is most excellent? He replied What a man with little property can afford to give; and begin with those for whom you are responsible. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1677)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us one day to give sadaqah. At that time I had some property. I said: Today I shall surpass AbuBakr if I surpass him any day. I, therefore, brought half my property. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: What did you leave for your family? I replied: The same amount. AbuBakr brought all that he had with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him: What did you leave for your family? He replied: I left Allah and His Apostle for them. I said: I shall never compete you in anything. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1678)
[Machine] Saad ibn Ubadah came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Which charity do you find most admirable?" The Prophet replied, "Providing water." This was followed by Hammam quoting Qatadah.
Sa’id reported Sa’d came to the Prophet (SWAS) and asked him Which sadaqah do you like most? He replied Water. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1679)
