I spent a night at my aunt Maymunah’s. The Prophet ﷺ got up during the night, relieved himself, then washed his face and hands, then went back to sleep. Then he got up, went to the water-skin, untied its mouthstring, then performed a wudu that was between the two wudus ˹light and heavy˺ without using much water, yet he did it thoroughly.

Then he stood and prayed. I got up and stretched, not wanting him to think I had been watching him, and I performed wudu. Then he stood to pray, and I stood on his left. He took my hand and turned me to his right. The night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ amounted to thirteen rakahs. Then he lay down and slept until he began to breathe heavily (snore), and when he slept he would breathe heavily. Then Bilal came to him and informed him that it was time for prayer. So he got up and prayed, and he did not perform wudu ˹again before the prayer˺.

allāhumma ijʿal fī qalbī nūrā, wa-fī baṣarī nūrā, wa-fī samʿī nūrā, wa-ʿan yamīnī nūrā, wa-ʿan yasārī nūrā, wa-fawqī nūrā, wa-taḥtī nūrā, wa-amāmī nūrā, wa-khalfī nūrā, wa-ʿaẓẓim lī nūrā.

And among his supplications was: “O Allah, place light in my heart, and light in my sight, and light in my hearing; and light on my right, and light on my left; and light above me, and light beneath me; and light in front of me, and light behind me; and make for me a great light.”

Kurayb said: and seven ˹more˺ in the chest. I met one of al-Abbas’s sons, and he related them to me: he mentioned my spine, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin, and he mentioned two additional qualities.

بِتُّ لَيْلَةً عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ، فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، فَأَتَى حَاجَتَهُ، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ، ثُمَّ نَامَ. ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ، فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ، وَلَمْ يُكْثِرْ، وَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ.

ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى، فَقُمْتُ فَتَمَطَّيْتُ، كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَرَى أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَنْتَبِهُ لَهُ، فَتَوَضَّأْتُ. فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى، فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ، فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِي، فَأَدَارَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً. ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ، وَكَانَ إِذَا نَامَ نَفَخَ. فَأَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ، فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ، فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى، وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ.

وَكَانَ فِي دُعَائِهِ: «اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا، وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا، وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا، وَفَوْقِي نُورًا، وَتَحْتِي نُورًا، وَأَمَامِي نُورًا، وَخَلْفِي نُورًا، وَعَظِّمْ لِي نُورًا».

قَالَ كُرَيْبٌ: وَسَبْعًا فِي التَّابُوتِ. فَلَقِيتُ بَعْضَ وَلَدِ الْعَبَّاسِ، فَحَدَّثَنِي بِهِنَّ، فَذَكَرَ عَصَبِي، وَلَحْمِي، وَدَمِي، وَشَعَرِي، وَبَشَرِي، وَذَكَرَ خَصْلَتَيْنِ.

I spent the night in the house of my mother's sister, Maimuna, and observed how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed (at night). He got up and relieved himself. He then washed his face and hands and then went to sleep. He again got up and went near the water-skin and loosened its straps and then poured some water in a bowl and inclined it with his hands (towards himself). He then performed a good ablution between the two extremes and then stood up to pray. I also came and stood by his left side. He took hold of me and made me stand on his right side. It was in thirteen rakʿahs that the (night) prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was completed. He then slept till he began to snore, and we knew that he had gone to sleep by his snoring. He then went out (for the dawn prayer), and said while praying or prostrating himself: "O Allah! place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light on my right, light on my left, light in front of me, light behind me, light above me, light below me, make light for me," or he said: "Make me light."

بِتُّ فِي بَيْتِ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَبَقَيْتُ كَيْفَ يُصَلِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَقَامَ فَبَالَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَكَفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ إِلَى الْقِرْبَةِ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا ثُمَّ صَبَّ فِي الْجَفْنَةِ أَوِ الْقَصْعَةِ فَأَكَبَّهُ بِيَدِهِ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا حَسَنًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي فَجِئْتُ فَقُمْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ قَالَ فَأَخَذَنِي فَأَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَتَكَامَلَتْ صَلاَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثَلاَثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ نَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ وَكُنَّا نَعْرِفُهُ إِذَا نَامَ بِنَفْخِهِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ فَصَلَّى فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ فِي صَلاَتِهِ أَوْ فِي سُجُودِهِ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ شِمَالِي نُورًا وَأَمَامِي نُورًا وَخَلْفِي نُورًا وَفَوْقِي نُورًا وَتَحْتِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا أَوْ قَالَ وَاجْعَلْنِي نُورًا

[Machine] I slept at my aunt Maymuna bint Al-Harith's house. Then, the Prophet ﷺ woke up during the night, went to attend to his needs, then came and washed his face and hands and went back to sleep. Then, he woke up during the night and came to Qibla (direction of prayer), untied his hair, made ablution, not excessive, and prayed. I disliked that he sees me spying on him, so I kept watching him. After that, I stood up and did the same as he did, and I stood on his left side. He held his earlobe until he turned me around, and I stood on his right side while he was praying. His prayer consisted of thirteen Rak'ahs, including the two Rak'ahs of Fajr prayer. Then, he lay down and slept until he snored, and then Bilal announced the prayer call (Adhan) to him. So, he stood up and prayed without performing ablution.

نِمْتُ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَتَى الْحَاجَةَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا فَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ لَمْ يُكْثِرْ وَقَدْ أبْلَغَ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي وَتَمَطَّيْتُ كَرَاهيَةَ أَنْ يَرَانِي كُنْتُ أَبْقِيهِ يَعْنِي أَرْقُبُهُ ثُمَّ قُمْتُ فَفَعَلْتُ كَمَا فَعَلَ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَ بِمَا يَلِي أُذُنِي حَتَّى أَدَارَنِي فَكُنْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلاتُهُ إِلَى ثَلاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً فِيهَا رَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِلالٌ فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلاةِ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ

[Machine] I stayed at my aunt Maymuna's house and observed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying. He stood up and started washing his face and hands, then he laid down and slept. He woke up and went towards the place for prayer and untied his hair. Then he poured water in the jug or basin and cupped his hands with it. He then performed a good and excellent ablution between the two ablutions. He stood up to pray, and I stood on his left side, but he took hold of me and made me stand on his right side. The prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consisted of thirteen rak'ahs in total. Then he went back to sleep until he snored, and we recognized that he was asleep by his snoring. Then he went out for prayer and prayed, saying either in his prayer or in his prostration, "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light on my right, light on my left, light in front of me, light behind me, light above me, light below me, and make me a light." Shu'bah or someone else said, "Or he said, 'Place light for me.'" 'Amr ibn Dinar narrated from Kurayb from Ibn Abbas that he had slept while lying down.

بِتُّ فِي بَيْتِ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَرَقَبْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ يُصَلِّي فَقَامَ فَبَالَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَكَفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَعَمَدَ إِلَى الْقِرْبَةِ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا ثُمَّ صَبَّ فِي الْجَفْنَةِ أَوِ الْقَصْعَةِ وَأَكَبَّ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا حَسَنًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي فَجِئْتُ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَنِي فَأَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَتَكَامَلَتْ صَلاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً قَالَ ثُمَّ نَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ وَكُنَّا نَعْرِفُهُ إِذَا نَامَ بِنَفْخِهِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فَصَلَّى وَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ فِي صَلاتِهِ أَوْ فِي سُجُودِهِ اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا وَأَمَامِي نُورًا وَخَلْفِي نُورًاوَفَوْقِي نُورًا وَتَحْتِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْنِي نُورًا قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَوْ قَالَ اجْعَلْ لِي نَوَرًا قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّهُ نَامَ مُضْطَجِعًا

I spent a night with my maternal aunt (sister of my mother) Maimuna. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ got up during the night and relieved himself, then washed his face and hands and went to sleep. He then got up again, and came to the water skin and loosened its straps, then performed good ablution between the two extremes. He then stood up and observed prayer. I also stood up and stretched my body fearing that he might be under the impression that I was there to find out (what he did at night). So I also performed ablution and stood up to pray, but I stood on his left. He took hold of my hand and made me go around to his right side. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed thirteen rakʿahs of his night prayer. He then lay down and slept and snored (and it was his habit to snore while asleep). Then Bilal came and he informed him about the prayer. He (the Holy Prophet) then stood up for prayer and did not perform ablution, and his supplication included these words: "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light on my right hand, light on my left hand, light above me, light below me, light in front of me, light behind me, and enhance light for me." Kuraib (the narrator) said: There are seven (words more) which are in my heart (but I cannot recall them) and I met some of the descendants of Al-ʿAbbas and they narrated these words to me and mentioned in them: (Light) in my sinew, in my flesh, in my blood, in my hair, in my skin, and made a mention of two more things. One night I slept at the house of Maimuna. The Prophet ﷺ woke up, answered the call of nature, washed his face and hands, and then slept. He got up (late at night), went to a water skin, opened the mouth thereof and performed ablution not using much water, yet he washed all the parts properly and then offered the prayer. I got up and straightened my back in order that the Prophet ﷺ might not feel that I was watching him, and then I performed the ablution, and when he got up to offer the prayer, I stood on his left. He caught hold of my ear and brought me over to his right side. He offered thirteen rakʿat in all and then lay down and slept till he started blowing out his breath as he used to do when he slept. In the meantime Bilal informed the Prophet ﷺ of the approaching time for the (Fajr) prayer, and the Prophet offered the Fajr (Morning) prayer without performing new ablution. He used to say in his invocation, Allahumma ijʿal fi qalbi nuran wa fi basari nuran, wa fi samʿi nuran, waʿan yamini nuran, waʿan yasari nuran, wa fawqi nuran, wa tahti nuran, wa amami nuran, wa khalfi nuran, wajʿal li nuran." Kuraib (a sub narrator) said, "I have forgotten seven other words, (which the Prophet ﷺ mentioned in this invocation). I met a man from the offspring of Al-ʿAbbas and he narrated those seven things to me, mentioning, '(Let there be light in) my nerves, my flesh, my blood, my hair and my body,' and he also mentioned two other things." بِتُّ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَقَضَى حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوئَيْنِ لَمْ يُكْثِرْ وَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى فَقُمْتُ فَتَمَطَّيْتُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَرَى أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَرْقُبُهُ فَقُمْتُ فَتَوَضَّأْتُ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَ بِأُذُنِي فَأَدَارَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ وَكَانَ إِذَا نَامَ نَفَخَ فَإِذَا بِلَالٌ فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ وَكَانَ فِي دُعَائِهِ «اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا وَفَوْقِي نُورًا وَتَحْتِي نُورًا وَأَمَامِي نُورًا وَخَلْفِي نُورًا وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا» قَالَ كُرَيْبٌ فَلَقِيتُ بَعْضَ وَلَدِ الْعَبَّاسِ فَحَدَّثَنِي بِهِنَّ وَذَكَرَ «عَصَبِي وَلَحْمِي وَدَمِي وَشَعْرِي وَبَشَرِي» وَذَكَرَ خَصْلَتَيْنِ

[Machine] I stayed at my aunt Maymuna bint al-Harith, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad. I saw him get up in the middle of the night and fulfill his needs. He then went to the Qirbah (a water container) and untied its rope. He performed ablution (wudu) between the two ablutions, and then went back to his bed and slept. He then went to the Qirbah again, untied the rope, and performed ablution. He prayed and I got up and did as he did. I approached him from his left, but he turned and made room for me on his right. He prayed either eleven or thirteen units (rak'ahs), and then fell asleep until he snored. I heard him say in his prostration, "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light in my vision, light behind me, light in front of me, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light below me, and grant me the greatest light". He then slept until he snored, and Bilal came to him and called him for prayer, so he got up.

بِتُّ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَرَأَيْتُهُ قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَوْمَةً فَقَضَى حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَحَلَّ شِنَاقَهَا فَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ ثُمَّ آوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَنَامَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَحَلَّ شِنَاقَهَا فَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا هُوَ الْوُضُوءُ فَصَلَّى فَقُمْتُ فَصَنَعْتُ كَمَا صَنَعَ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَلَفِتَني فَأَقَامَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَصَلَّى إِمَّا إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً وَإِمَّا ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ نَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِهِ «اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ فِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ فِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ خَلْفِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ عَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ عَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ فَوْقِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ تَحْتِي نُورًا وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا» ثُمَّ نَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ فَأَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَخَرَجَ

He went to the nearest water source and performed ablution between two ablutions, without excessive use of water. Then, he stood up to pray. He said, "I tried to make sure that he did not notice that I was observing him. Then, I stood up and did as he did. I stood on his left side, and he began to recite until he turned towards me and held my ear, so I was on his right side while he was praying. He completed his prayer with thirteen units of prayer, including the two units of the dawn prayer. Then, he lay down and slept until he snored. Bilal came and called for prayer, so he stood up, prayed, and did not perform ablution again."

بِتُّ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَتَى الْحَاجَةَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ وُضُوءَيْنِ لَمْ يُكْثِرْ وَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّي قَالَ وتَخَطَّيْتُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَرَى أَنِّي كُنْتُ أُبَيِّتَهُ يَعْنِي أُراقِبَهُ ثُمَّ قُمْتُ فَفَعَلْتُ كَمَا فَعَلَ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَ بِمَا يَلِي أُذُنِي حَتَّى أَدَارَنِي فَكُنْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلَاتُهُ إِلَى ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً مِنْهَا رَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِلَالٌ فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ

[Machine] I stayed at my aunt Maymuna's house, and I watched the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to see how much he prayed. He stood for a while, then he approached the pitcher, untied his waistcloth, poured water into a basin or jug, and washed his face and arms. Then he slept for a while, then he woke up and performed a beautiful ablution between the two ablutions. He stood up to pray, and I approached and stood on his left side. He took hold of me and moved me to his right side, completing the Prophet's prayer ﷺ during the night with thirteen rak'ahs. Then he slept, and his sleep was known by his breath. He slept until he snored, then he got up to perform the prayer. During his prayer or supplication, he used to say, "O Allah, make light in my hearing, light in my sight, light in my heart, light on my right, light on my left, light in front of me, light behind me, light above me, light below me, and make light for me."

بِتُّ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَرَمَقْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَمْ يُصَلِّي فَقَامَ فَبَالَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا وَصَبَّ فِي قَصْعَةٍ أَوْ جَفْنَةٍ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا حَسَنًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي فَجِئْتُ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَنِي فَجَعَلَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَتَكَامَلَتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلَ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ نَامَ وَكَانَ يُعْرَفُ نَوْمُهُ بِنَفْخِهِ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ أَوْ فِي دُعَائِهِ «اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَفِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ شِمَالِي نُورًا وَعَنْ أَمَامِي نُورًا وَخَلْفِي نُورًا وَفَوْقِي نُورًا وَتَحْتِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا»

One night I slept at the house of Maimuna. The Prophet ﷺ woke up, answered the call of nature, washed his face and hands, and then slept. He got up (late at night), went to a water skin, opened the mouth thereof and performed ablution not using much water, yet he washed all the parts properly and then offered the prayer. I got up and straightened my back in order that the Prophet ﷺ might not feel that I was watching him, and then I performed the ablution, and when he got up to offer the prayer, I stood on his left. He caught hold of my ear and brought me over to his right side. He offered thirteen rakʿat in all and then lay down and slept till he started blowing out his breath as he used to do when he slept. In the meantime Bilal informed the Prophet ﷺ of the approaching time for the (Fajr) prayer, and the Prophet offered the Fajr (Morning) prayer without performing new ablution. He used to say in his invocation, Allahumma ijʿal fi qalbi nuran wa fi basari nuran, wa fi samʿi nuran, waʿan yamini nuran, waʿan yasari nuran, wa fawqi nuran, wa tahti nuran, wa amami nuran, wa khalfi nuran, wajʿal li nuran." Kuraib (a sub narrator) said, "I have forgotten seven other words, (which the Prophet ﷺ mentioned in this invocation). I met a man from the offspring of Al-ʿAbbas and he narrated those seven things to me, mentioning, '(Let there be light in) my nerves, my flesh, my blood, my hair and my body,' and he also mentioned two other things." بِتُّ عِنْدَ خَالَتِي مَيْمُونَةَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَتَى حَاجَتَهُ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءَيْنِ لَمْ يُكْثِرْ وَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى فَقُمْتُ فَتَوَضَّأْتُ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَ بِأُذُنِي فَأَدَارَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ وَكَانَ إِذَا نَامَ نَفَخَ فَأَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ فِي دُعَائِهِ «اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ شِمَالِي نُورًا وَفَوْقِي نُورًا وَتَحْتِي نُورًا وَأَمَامِي نُورًا وَخَلْفِي نُورًا وَأَعْظَمْ لِي نُورًا»

Ibn 'Abbas said, "I spent the night at the house of my aunt. Maymuna. The Prophet ﷺ got up to answer a call of nature and then washed his hands and face and slept. Then he got up and took the water-skin and loosened its strap and then did a medium sort of wudu' and no more but he did it adequately. Then he prayed. I stood up and went slowly, not wanting him to see that I was observing him. I did wudu'. Then he stood up to pray and I stood at his left. He took my hand and brought me around to his right. His complete night prayer consisted of twelve rak'ats. Then he lay down and went to sleep until he snored. When he slept, he would snore. Bilal gave the adhan for the morning prayer and he prayed without doing wudu'. One of his supplications was, 'O Allah, put light in my heart and light in my hearing and light on my right and light on my left and a light above me and a light behind me and a light in front of me and a light behind him and make my light great.'"

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ بِتُّ عِنْدَ مَيْمُونَةَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَى حَاجَتَهُ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ نَامَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَتَى الْقِرْبَةَ فَأَطْلَقَ شِنَاقَهَا ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءًا بَيْنَ وُضُوءَيْنِ لَمْ يُكْثِرْ وَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ فَصَلَّى فَقُمْتُ فَتَمَطَّيْتُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَرَى أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَبْقِيهِ فَتَوَضَّأْتُ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي فَقُمْتُ عِنْدَ يَسَارِهِ فَأَخَذَ بِأُذُنِي فَأَدَارَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلاَتُهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلاَثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ وَكَانَ إِذَا نَامَ نَفَخَ فَآذَنَهُ بِلاَلٌ بِالصَّلاَةِ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ وَكَانَ فِي دُعَائِهِ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا وَفَوْقِي نُورًا وَتَحْتِي نُورًا وَأَمَامِي نُورًا وَخَلْفِي نُورًا وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا

"بِتُّ (نمت) عنْدَ خَالَتِى مَيْمُونَةَ (ابنَةِ الحارِث)، فَقَامَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّى منَ اللَّيْل، فَأَتَى الحَاجَةَ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ، ثُمَّ نَامَ، ثُمَّ قَامَ يُصَلِّى منَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَتَى القِرْبَةَ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وضُوءًا بَيْنَ وُضُوءَيْنِ لَمْ يُكْثِرْ وَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى، وَتَمَطَّيْتُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَرَانى أَتَّقيهِ - يَعْنى أُرَاقبَهُ - ثُمَّ قُمْتُ فَفَعَلتُ كَمَا فَعَلَ، فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ، فَأَخَذَ بِمَا يَلِى أُذُنِى حَتَّى أَدَارَنِى فَكنَتُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّى، فَتَتَامَّتْ صَلاتُهُ إِلَى ثَلاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً مِنْهَا رَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ، ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ فَنَامَ حَتَّى نَفَخَ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِلالٌ فَآذَنَهُ بِالصَّلاةِ فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأَ (وَزَادنى يَحْيَى في هَذَا الحَديث عَنِ الثَّوْرِى، عَنْ سَلَمَة بن كهيل، عن كريب، عن ابن عباس قال: ) وَكَانَ فِى دُعائِهِ: "اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ في قَلْبِى نُورًا، وَفِى سَمْعِى نُورًا، وَفِى بَصَرِى نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَمِينى نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَسَارى نُورًا، وَمنْ فَوْقى نُورًا، وَمنْ تَحْتِى نُورًا، وَمنْ بَيْنِ يَدَى نُورًا، وَمِنْ خَلفى نُورًا، وَأَعْظِمْ لِى نُورًا.

قال كُرَيْبٌ: وَسِتٌّ عِنْدى في التَّابُوت: وَعَصَبِى، وَمُخِّى، وَدَمى، وَشَعْرى، وَبَشَرى، وَعِظَامِى".
