The Prophet's ﷺ night prayer and dua for nur

bukhari:6316ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Ibn Mahdī > Sufyān > Salamah > Kurayb > Ibn ʿAbbās

I spent the night with Maymunah. The Prophet ﷺ got up and went to relieve himself; he washed his face and hands, then slept. Then he got up, went to the waterskin, untied its strap, and performed an ablution that was between two ablutions: he did not use much water, yet he did it thoroughly. Then he prayed. I got up and stretched, not wanting him to think that I had been watching him, then I performed ablution. He stood to pray, and I stood on his left, so he took me by my ear and turned me to his right. His prayer was completed as thirteen rakahs. Then he lay down and slept until he breathed audibly; when he slept, he would breathe audibly. Bilal then informed him of the prayer, so he prayed and did not perform ablution. In his dua he would say:

allāhumma ijʿal fī qalbī nūrā, wa-fī basarī nūrā, wa-fī samʿī nūrā, wa-ʿan yamīnī nūrā, wa-ʿan yasārī nūrā, wa-fawqī nūrā, wa-taḥtī nūrā, wa-amāmī nūrā, wa-khalfī nūrā, wa-ijʿal lī nūrā

(O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light beneath me, light before me, light behind me, and grant me light.)

Kurayb said: And seven are in the chest. I then met a man from the descendants of al-Abbas, and he narrated them to me, mentioning my sinew, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin, and he mentioned two qualities.

The Prophet’s ﷺ dua in tahajjud

bukhari:6317ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > Sufyān > Sulaymān b. Abī Muslim > Ṭāwūs > Ibn ʿAbbās

When the Prophet ﷺ rose at night to pray tahajjud, he would say:

allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu anta nūru al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi wa-man fīhinn, wa-laka al-ḥamdu anta qayyimu al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi wa-man fīhinn, wa-laka al-ḥamdu; anta al-ḥaqq, wa-waʿduka ḥaqq, wa-qawluka ḥaqq, wa-liqāʾuka ḥaqq, wa-al-jannatu ḥaqq, wa-al-nāru ḥaqq, wa-al-sāʿatu ḥaqq, wa-al-nabiyyūna ḥaqq, wa-Muḥammadun ḥaqq.

allāhumma laka aslamtu, wa-ʿalayka tawakkaltu, wa-bika āmantu, wa-ilayka anabtu, wa-bika khāṣamtu, wa-ilayka ḥākamtu, fa-ghfir lī mā qaddamtu wa-mā akhkhartu, wa-mā asrartu wa-mā aʿlantu; anta al-muqaddimu wa-anta al-muʾakhkhiru, lā ilāha illā anta –or: lā ilāha ghayruka.

(O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them. To You belongs all praise. You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them. To You belongs all praise. You are the Truth; Your promise is true; Your word is true; meeting You is true; Paradise is true; the Fire is true; the Hour is true; the prophets are true; and Muhammad is true.

O Allah, to You I have submitted, upon You I have relied, in You I have believed, to You I have turned, by You I have argued, and to You I have referred for judgment. So forgive me what I have sent ahead and what I have delayed, what I have kept secret and what I have made public. You are the One who brings forward, and You are the One who puts back. There is no god but You—or: there is no god other than You."
