78.18 To be merciful to children and embrace them

٧٨۔١٨ باب رَحْمَةِ الْوَلَدِ وَتَقْبِيلِهِ وَمُعَانَقَتِهِ

[Machine] "And Thabit reported from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ took Ibrahim, then he kissed him and smelled his fragrance."

وَقَالَ ثَابِتٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَخَذَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، فَقَبَّلَهُ وَشَمَّهُ.

A man from Iraq worried whether killing a mosquito requires a sacrifice during Hajj while al-Ḥusayn had just been killed at Karbalāʾ

I was present when a man asked Ibn ʿUmar about the blood of mosquitoes. Ibn ʿUmar said, "From where are you?" The man replied. "From Iraq." Ibn ʿUmar said, "Look at that! he is asking me about the blood of Mosquitoes while they (the Iraqis ) have killed the (grand) son of the Prophet. I have heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "They (Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet-smelling flowers in this world."  

البخاري:٥٩٩٤حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيٌّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نُعْمٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ شَاهِدًا لاِبْنِ عُمَرَ وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنْ دَمِ الْبَعُوضِ فَقَالَ مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ فَقَالَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ قَالَ انْظُرُوا إِلَى هَذَا يَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ دَمِ الْبَعُوضِ وَقَدْ قَتَلُوا ابْنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَسَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ هُمَا رَيْحَانَتَاىَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا

(the wife of the Prophet) A lady along with her two daughters came to me asking me (for some alms), but she found nothing with me except one date which I gave to her and she divided it between her two daughters, and then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet ﷺ came in and I informed him about this story. He said, "Whoever is in charge of (put to test by) these daughters and treats them generously, then they will act as a shield for him from the (Hell) Fire."  

البخاري:٥٩٩٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنَّ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَدَّثَتْهُ قَالَتْ جَاءَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ مَعَهَا ابْنَتَانِ تَسْأَلُنِي فَلَمْ تَجِدْ عِنْدِي غَيْرَ تَمْرَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ فَأَعْطَيْتُهَا فَقَسَمَتْهَا بَيْنَ ابْنَتَيْهَا ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَخَرَجَتْ فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَلِي مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَنَاتِ شَيْئًا فَأَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِنَّ كُنَّ لَهُ سِتْرًا مِنَ النَّارِ

The Prophet ﷺ came out towards us, while carrying Umamah, the daughter of Abi Al-As (his granddaughter) over his shoulder. He prayed, and when he wanted to bow, he put her down, and when he stood up, he lifted her up.  

البخاري:٥٩٩٦حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ الْمَقْبُرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قَتَادَةَ قَالَ

خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأُمَامَةُ بِنْتُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ فَصَلَّى فَإِذَا رَكَعَ وَضَعَهَا وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَفَعَهَا

Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissed Al-Hasan bin ʿAli while Al-Aqra' bin HʿAbis at-Tamim was sitting beside him. Al-Aqra said, "I have ten children and I have never kissed anyone of them," Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast a look at him and said, "Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully."  

البخاري:٥٩٩٧حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ

قَبَّلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ وَعِنْدَهُ الأَقْرَعُ بْنُ حَابِسٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ جَالِسًا فَقَالَ الأَقْرَعُ إِنَّ لِي عَشَرَةً مِنَ الْوَلَدِ مَا قَبَّلْتُ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ لاَ يَرْحَمُ لاَ يُرْحَمُ

A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "You (people) kiss the boys! We don't kiss them." The Prophet said, "I cannot put mercy in your heart after Allah has taken it away from it."  

البخاري:٥٩٩٨حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ قَالَتْ

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ تُقَبِّلُونَ الصِّبْيَانَ فَمَا نُقَبِّلُهُمْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَوَ أَمْلِكُ لَكَ أَنْ نَزَعَ اللَّهُ مِنْ قَلْبِكَ الرَّحْمَةَ

Some Sabi (i.e. war prisoners, children and woman only) were brought before the Prophet ﷺ and behold, a woman amongst them was milking her breasts to feed and whenever she found a child amongst the captives, she took it over her chest and nursed it (she had lost her child but later she found him) the Prophet said to us, "Do you think that this lady can throw her son in the fire?" We replied, "No, if she has the power not to throw it (in the fire)." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Allah is more merciful to His slaves than this lady to her son."  

البخاري:٥٩٩٩حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ قَدِمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ سَبْىٌ فَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ السَّبْىِ قَدْ تَحْلُبُ ثَدْيَهَا تَسْقِي إِذَا وَجَدَتْ صَبِيًّا فِي السَّبْىِ أَخَذَتْهُ فَأَلْصَقَتْهُ بِبَطْنِهَا وَأَرْضَعَتْهُ فَقَالَ لَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَتَرَوْنَ هَذِهِ طَارِحَةً وَلَدَهَا فِي النَّارِ قُلْنَا لاَ وَهْىَ تَقْدِرُ عَلَى أَنْ لاَ تَطْرَحَهُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَرْحَمُ بِعِبَادِهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ بِوَلَدِهَا
