Collected by al-Adab al-Mufrad, Abū Dāwūd, Ḥākim, Ibn Ḥibbān, ṬabarānīAbu Hurayra reported that a man who was handsome came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I love beauty and I have been given what you see so I do not want anyone to be superior to me (and he either said 'by the strap of a sandal' or 'by a red sandal-thong'). Is that pride?" "No," he replied. "Pride is when someone disdains the truth and is contemptuous of people."

A man who was beautiful came to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: Messenger of Allah, I am a man who likes beauty, and I have been given some of it, as you see. And I do not like that anyone excels me (in respect of beauty). He replied: No, pride is disdaining what is true and despising people.
