A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: My son has died; what do I receive from his estate? He replied: You receive a sixth. When he turned away he called him and said: You receive another sixth. When he turned away, he called him and said: The other sixth is an allowance (beyond what is due). Qatadah said: They (the Companions) did not know the heirs with whom he was given (a sixth). Qatadah said: The minimum share given to the grandfather was a sixth.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ابْنَ ابْنِي مَاتَ فَمَا لِي مِنْ مِيرَاثِهِ فَقَالَ لَكَ السُّدُسُ فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ لَكَ سُدُسٌ آخَرُ فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ السُّدُسَ الآخَرَ طُعْمَةٌ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ فَلاَ يَدْرُونَ مَعَ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ وَرَّثَهُ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ أَقَلُّ شَىْءٍ وَرِثَ الْجَدُّ السُّدُسَ

"A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said" 'My son died, so what do I inherit from him?' He said: 'For you is a sixth.' When he turned to leave,he called him and said: 'For you is another sixth.' So when he turned to leave , he called him saying: 'The last sixth is consumable for you.'"

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ابْنِي مَاتَ فَمَا لِي فِي مِيرَاثِهِ قَالَ لَكَ السُّدُسُ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ لَكَ سُدُسٌ آخَرُ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى دَعَاهُ قَالَ إِنَّ السُّدُسَ الآخَرَ طُعْمَةٌ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, the son of my son has died. What is my portion of his inheritance?" He said, "You have the sixth." When he turned to leave, the Prophet called him back and said, "Indeed, the remaining sixth is a provision."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ابْنَ ابْنِي مَاتَ فَمَا لِي مِنْ مِيرَاثِهِ؟ قَالَ «لَكَ السُّدُسُ» فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ السُّدُسَ الْآخَرَ طُعْمَةٌ»

When he turned away, the man called him back and said, "You have another one-sixth." When he turned away again, the man called him back and said, "Indeed, the other one-sixth is a gift." Muhammad said in his narration, "When he turned away, he said, 'You have another one-sixth, and the other one-sixth is a gift for you.'"
