[AI] Most of us were talking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night, and then we went to him the next morning. He said, "The prophets were presented to me last night with their nations. The Prophet ﷺ walked by with a group of people, then the Prophet ﷺ walked by with a smaller group, and then the Prophet ﷺ walked by alone, and there was no one with him until Musa walked by with a group from the children of Israel. They amazed me so I asked, 'Who are these?'" I was told, "These are your nation, O Messenger of Allah, and these are the children of Israel." I said, "Where is my nation?" I was told, "Look to your right." So I looked and the horizon was filled with the faces of men. Then I was told, "Look to your left." So I looked and the horizon was filled with the faces of men. Then I was asked, "Are you pleased?" I said, "I am pleased, O Lord, I am pleased, O Lord." It was said to me, "Among these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being brought to account." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I wish that you, O Abu Umaamah and your mother, may be among them. If you can, be one of the seventy thousand. If you cannot, then be one of the people of the horizon. And if you cannot, then be one of the people of the outskirts." I have seen people who argue with one another, then 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me one of the seventy thousand." So he prayed for him. Then another man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me one of them." He said, "Ukkashah has beaten you to it." Then we asked, "Who are these seventy thousand people?" He said, "They are those who neither seek rukiyah (charms) nor do they believe in bad omens and they put their trust in their Lord."

I went out with 'Ubaidullah bin ʿAdi Al-Khaiyar. When we reached Hims (i.e. a town in Syria), 'Ubaidullah bin ʿAdi said (to me), "Would you like to see Wahshi so that we may ask him about the killing of Hamza?" I replied, "Yes." Wahshi used to live in Hims. We enquired about him and somebody said to us, "He is that in the shade of his palace, as if he were a full water skin." So we went up to him, and when we were at a short distance from him, we greeted him and he greeted us in return. 'Ubaidullah was wearing his turban and Wahshi could not see except his eyes and feet. 'Ubaidullah said, "O Wahshi! Do you know me?" Wahshi looked at him and then said, "No, by Allah! But I know that ʿAdi bin Al-Khiyar married a woman called Um Qital, the daughter of Abu Al-Is, and she delivered a boy for him at Mecca, and I looked for a wet nurse for that child. (Once) I carried that child along with his mother and then I handed him over to her, and your feet resemble that child's feet." Then 'Ubaidullah uncovered his face and said (to Wahshi), "Will you tell us (the story of) the killing of Hamza?" Wahshi replied "Yes, Hamza killed Tuaima bin ʿAdi bin Al-Khaiyar at Badr (battle) so my master, Jubair bin Mutʿim said to me, 'If you kill Hamza in revenge for my uncle, then you will be set free." When the people set out (for the battle of Uhud) in the year of 'Ainain ..'Ainain is a mountain near the mountain of Uhud, and between it and Uhud there is a valley.. I went out with the people for the battle. When the army aligned for the fight, Siba' came out and said, 'Is there any (Muslim) to accept my challenge to a duel?' Hamza bin ʿAbdul Muttalib came out and said, 'O Siba'. O Ibn Um Anmar, the one who circumcises other ladies! Do you challenge Allah and His Apostle?' Then Hamza attacked and killed him, causing him to be non-extant like the bygone yesterday. I hid myself under a rock, and when he (i.e. Hamza) came near me, I threw my spear at him, driving it into his umbilicus so that it came out through his buttocks, causing him to die. When all the people returned to Mecca, I too returned with them. I stayed in (Mecca) till Islam spread in it (i.e. Mecca). Then I left for Taif, and when the people (of Taif) sent their messengers to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I was told that the Prophet ﷺ did not harm the messengers; So I too went out with them till I reached Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he saw me, he said, 'Are you Wahshi?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Was it you who killed Hamza?' I replied, 'What happened is what you have been told of.' He said, 'Can you hide your face from me?' So I went out when Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, and Musailamah Al-Kadhdhab appeared (claiming to be a prophet). I said, 'I will go out to Musailamah so that I may kill him, and make amends for killing Hamza. So I went out with the people (to fight Musailamah and his followers) and then famous events took place concerning that battle. Suddenly I saw a man (i.e. Musailamah) standing near a gap in a wall. He looked like an ash-colored camel and his hair was dishevelled. So I threw my spear at him, driving it into his chest in between his breasts till it passed out through his shoulders, and then an Ansari man attacked him and struck him on the head with a sword. ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said, 'A slave girl on the roof of a house said: Alas! The chief of the believers (i.e. Musailamah) has been killed by a black slave."

The Prophet ﷺ once came out to us and said, "Some nations were displayed before me. A prophet would pass in front of me with one man, and another with two men, and another with a group of people. and another with nobody with him. Then I saw a great crowd covering the horizon and I wished that they were my followers, but it was said to me, 'This is Moses and his followers.' Then it was said to me, 'Look'' I looked and saw a big gathering with a large number of people covering the horizon. It was said, "Look this way and that way.' So I saw a big crowd covering the horizon. Then it was said to me, "These are your followers, and among them there are 70,000 who will enter Paradise without (being asked about their) accounts. " Then the people dispersed and the Prophet ﷺ did not tell who those 70,000 were. So the companions of the Prophet ﷺ started talking about that and some of them said, "As regards us, we were born in the era of heathenism, but then we believed in Allah and His Apostle . We think however, that these (70,000) are our offspring." That talk reached the Prophet ﷺ who said, "These (70,000) are the people who do not draw an evil omen from (birds) and do not get treated by branding themselves and do not treat with Ruqya, but put their trust (only) in their Lord." then 'Ukasha bin Muhsin got up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Am I one of those (70,000)?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes." Then another person got up and said, "Am I one of them?" The Prophet ﷺ said, " 'Ukasha has anticipated you."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The people were displayed in front of me and I saw one prophet passing by with a large group of his followers, and another prophet passing by with only a small group of people, and another prophet passing by with only ten (persons), and another prophet passing by with only five (persons), and another prophet passed by alone. And then I looked and saw a large multitude of people, so I asked Gabriel, "Are these people my followers?' He said, 'No, but look towards the horizon.' I looked and saw a very large multitude of people. Gabriel said. 'Those are your followers, and those are seventy thousand (persons) in front of them who will neither have any reckoning of their accounts nor will receive any punishment.' I asked, 'Why?' He said, 'For they used not to treat themselves with branding (cauterization) nor with Ruqya (get oneself treated by the recitation of some Verses of the Qur'an) and not to see evil omen in things, and they used to put their trust (only) in their Lord." On hearing that, 'Ukasha bin Mihsan got up and said (to the Prophet), "Invoke Allah to make me one of them." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, make him one of them." Then another man got up and said (to the Prophet), "Invoke Allah to make me one of them." The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Ukasha has preceded you."

Some people said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He said, "Do you crowd and squeeze each other on looking at the sun when it is not hidden by clouds?" They replied, "No, Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Do you crowd and squeeze each other on looking at the moon when it is full and not hidden by clouds?" They replied, No, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said, "So you will see Him (your Lord) on the Day of Resurrection similarly Allah will gather all the people and say, 'Whoever used to worship anything should follow that thing. 'So, he who used to worship the sun, will follow it, and he who used to worship the moon will follow it, and he who used to worship false deities will follow them; and then only this nation (i.e., Muslims) will remain, including their hypocrites. Allah will come to them in a shape other than they know and will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'We seek refuge with Allah from you. This is our place; (we will not follow you) till our Lord comes to us, and when our Lord comes to us, we will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to then in a shape they know and will say, "I am your Lord.' They will say, '(No doubt) You are our Lord,' and they will follow Him. Then a bridge will be laid over the (Hell) Fire." Messenger of Allah ﷺ added, "I will be the first to cross it. And the invocation of the Apostles on that Day, will be 'Allahumma Sallim, Sallim (O Allah, save us, save us!),' and over that bridge there will be hooks Similar to the thorns of As Sa'dan (a thorny tree). Didn't you see the thorns of As-Sa'dan?" The companions said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He added, "So the hooks over that bridge will be like the thorns of As-Sa-dan except that their greatness in size is only known to Allah. These hooks will snatch the people according to their deeds. Some people will be ruined because of their evil deeds, and some will be cut into pieces and fall down in Hell, but will be saved afterwards, when Allah has finished the judgments among His slaves, and intends to take out of the Fire whoever He wishes to take out from among those who used to testify that none had the right to be worshipped but Allah. We will order the angels to take them out and the angels will know them by the mark of the traces of prostration (on their foreheads) for Allah banned the f ire to consume the traces of prostration on the body of Adam's son. So they will take them out, and by then they would have burnt (as coal), and then water, called Ma'ul Hayat (water of life) will be poured on them, and they will spring out like a seed springs out on the bank of a rainwater stream, and there will remain one man who will be facing the (Hell) Fire and will say, 'O Lord! It's (Hell's) vapor has Poisoned and smoked me and its flame has burnt me; please turn my face away from the Fire.' He will keep on invoking Allah till Allah says, 'Perhaps, if I give you what you want), you will ask for another thing?' The man will say, 'No, by Your Power, I will not ask You for anything else.' Then Allah will turn his face away from the Fire. The man will say after that, 'O Lord, bring me near the gate of Paradise.' Allah will say (to him), 'Didn't you promise not to ask for anything else? Woe to you, O son of Adam ! How treacherous you are!' The man will keep on invoking Allah till Allah will say, 'But if I give you that, you may ask me for something else.' The man will say, 'No, by Your Power. I will not ask for anything else.' He will give Allah his covenant and promise not to ask for anything else after that. So Allah will bring him near to the gate of Paradise, and when he sees what is in it, he will remain silent as long as Allah will, and then he will say, 'O Lord! Let me enter Paradise.' Allah will say, 'Didn't you promise that you would not ask Me for anything other than that? Woe to you, O son of Adam ! How treacherous you are!' On that, the man will say, 'O Lord! Do not make me the most wretched of Your creation,' and will keep on invoking Allah till Allah will smile and when Allah will smile because of him, then He will allow him to enter Paradise, and when he will enter Paradise, he will be addressed, 'Wish from so-and-so.' He will wish till all his wishes will be fulfilled, then Allah will say, All this (i.e. what you have wished for) and as much again therewith are for you.' " Abu Huraira added: That man will be the last of the people of Paradise to enter (Paradise).

Hadith of Ukkashah: Those who will enter Jannah without accounting or punishment

muslim:220aSaʿīd b. Manṣūr > Hushaym > Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān

[AI] I was with Said ibn Jubair, and he said, "Which of you saw the shooting star last night?" I said, "I did." Then I said, "I was not in prayer, but I had been stung." He said, "Then what did you do?" I said, "I sought ruqyah." He said, "What made you do that?" I said, "A hadith that al-Shabi told us." He said, "And what did al-Shabi tell you?" I said, "He narrated to us from Buraida ibn Husayb al-Aslami that he said, 'There is no ruqyah except for an evil eye or a sting.'" He said, "The one who confines himself to what he heard has done well. But Ibn Abbas narrated to us from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The nations were shown to me, and I saw a prophet with a small group, and a prophet with one or two men, and a prophet with no one with him. Then a great multitude was raised up for me, and I thought that they were my Ummah. But it was said to me, 'This is Moses ﷺ and his people; rather, look at the horizon.' So I looked, and there was a great multitude. Then it was said to me, 'Look at the other horizon,' and there was a great multitude. Then it was said to me, 'This is your Ummah, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment.'"

Then he got up and entered his house, and the people began discussing those who would enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment. Some of them said, "Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Others said, "Perhaps they are those who were born in Islam and did not associate anything with Allah ﷻ." And they mentioned other things. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said, "What are you discussing?" They informed him, and he said, "They are those who do not perform ruqyah, do not ask for ruqyah, do not seek omens, and they put their trust in their Lord." Then Ukkashah ibn Mihsan stood up and said, "Pray to Allah ﷻ to make me one of them." He said, "You are one of them." Then another man stood up and said, "Pray to Allah ﷻ to make me one of them." He said, "Ukkashah has preceded you in that."

muslim:2940aʿUbaydullāh b. Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī from my father > Shuʿbah > al-Nuʿmān b. Sālim

What is this hadith that you narrate that the Last Hour would come at such and such time? Thereupon he said: Hallowed be Allah, there is no god but Allah (or the words to the same effect). I have decided that I would not narrate anything to anyone now. I had only said that you would see after some time an important event that the (sacred) House (Ka'ba) would be burnt and it would happen and definitely happen. He then reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Dajjal would appear in my Ummah and he would stay (in the world) for forty - I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years. And Allah would then send Jesus son of Mary who would resemble 'Urwa b Mas'ud. He (Jesus Christ) would chase him and kill him. Then people would live for seven years that there would be no rancour between two persons. Then Allah would send cold wind from the side of Syria that none would survive upon the earth having a speck of good in him or faith in him but he would die, so much so that even if some amongst you were to enter the innermost part of the mountain, this wind would reach that place also and that would cause his death. I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Only the wicked people would survive and they would be as careless as birds with the characteristics of beasts. They would never appreciate the good nor condemn evil. Then Satan would come to them in human form and would say: Don't you respond? And they would say: What do you order us? And he would command them to worship the idols but, in spite of this, they would have abundance of sustenance and lead comfortable lives. Then the trumpet would be blown and no one would hear that but he would bend his neck to one side and raise it from the other side and the first one to hear that trumpet would be the person who would be busy in setting right the tank meant for providing water to the camels. He would swoon and the other people would also swoon, then Allah would send or He would cause to send rain which would be like dew and there would grow out of it the bodies of the people. Then the second trumpet would be blown and they would stand up and begin to look (around). Then it would be said: O people, go to your Lord, and make them stand there. And they would be questioned. Then it would be said: Bring out a group (out of them) for the Hell-Fire. And then it would be asked: How much? It would be said: Nine hundred and ninty-nine out of one thousand for the Hell-Fire and that would be the day which would make the children old because of its terror and that would be the day about which it has been said: "On the day when the shank would be uncovered" (lxviii. 42).

muslim:2009cSalamah b. Shabīb > al-Ḥasan b. Aʿyan > Zuhayr > Abū Isḥāq > al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib

Send your son to my residence (to carry this haudaj), and my father said to me: Carry it (for him). So I carried it and there went along with him (with Abu Bakr) my father in order to fetch its price and he ('Azib) said to Abu Bakr: Abu Bakr, narrate to me what you both did on the night when you set out on a journey along with Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: We set out during the night and went on walking until it was noon, and the path was vacant and so none passed by that (until) there appeared prominently before us a large rock. It had its shade and the rays of the sun did not reach that place. So we got down at that place. I then went to the rock and levelled the ground with my hands at the place where the Prophet ﷺ would take rest under its shade. I then set the bedding and said: Messenger of Allah, go to sleep and I shall keep a watch around you. I went out and watched around him. There we saw a shepherd moving towards that rock with his flock and he intended what we intended (i. e. taking rest). I met him and said to him: Young boy, to which place do you belong? He said: I am a person from Medina. I said, is there any milk in the udders of your sheep and goats? He said: Yes. He took hold of a goat, and I said to him: Clean the udder well so that it should be free from hair, dust and impurity. I saw al-Bara' striking his hand upon the other (to give an indication) how he did that. He milked the goat for me in a wooden cup which he had with him and I had with me a bucket in which I kept water for drinking and for performing ablution. I came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and did not like to awaken him from sleep but he was accidentally startled from the sleep. I poured water upon the milk (till It was cold) and I said: Messenger of Allah, take this milk. He then took It and I was delighted and he (the Holy Prophet) said: Is now not the time to march on? I said: Of course. So he marched on after the sun had passed the meridian and Suraqa b. Malik pursued us and we had been walking on soft, level ground. I said: Messenger of Allah, we are about to be overtaken by them. Thereupon he said: Be not grieved. Verily, Allah is with us. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed him and his horse sank into the earth. I think he also said: I know you have hurled curse upon me. So supplicate Allah for me and I take an oath that I shall turn everyone away who would come in search of you. So he (Messenger of Allah) supplicated Allah and he was rescued and he came back and to everyone he met, he said: I have combed all this side. In short, he diverted everyone whom he met and he in fact fulfilled his promise.

tirmidhi:2446my father

"When the Prophet ﷺ was taken for the Night Journey, he passed by a Prophet, and, some Prophets and with them were some people, and a Prophet, and some Prophets and with them was a group of people, and a Prophet, and some Prophets and with them there was no one. Until he passed by a large multitude. (The Prophet ﷺsaid: ) I said: 'Who is this?' It was said: 'Musa and his people. But raise your head and look.' There was a large multitude that covered the horizon, from one side to the other. It was said: 'These people are your Ummah, and there are seventy thousand besides these from your Ummah that shall enter Paradise without a reckoning.' So he went inside, and they did not question him, and he gave no explanation to them. (Some of them) said: 'We are them.' Others said: 'They are the children who were born upon the Fitrah and Islam.' So the Prophet ﷺ came out and said: 'They are those who do not get themselves cauterized, nor seek Ruqyah, nor read omens, and upon their Lord they rely.' So 'Ukashah bin Mihsan stood and said: 'Am I among them O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Yes.' Then another one stood up and said: 'Am I among them?' So he said "Ukashah has preceded you to it.'" Other chains report similar narrations.

[AI] Which of you saw the passing comet last night? I said, "Me," then I said, "But I wasn't in prayer, I was bitten by a scorpion." He said, "And how did it happen?" I said, "I was stung." He asked, "What made you do that?" So I said, "A hadith that Al-Sha'bi narrated from Buraydah Al-Aslami, who said, 'There is no ruqyah (incantation) except from an evil eye or a scorpion sting.'" Sa'id, meaning Ibn Jubayr, said, "The one who reaches what he heard has done well." Then he said, "Ibn 'Abbas narrated to us from the Prophet ﷺ who said, 'The nations were shown to me, and I saw a prophet with a small group and a prophet with one or two individuals, and a prophet with no one with him. Then a great multitude was raised for me, so I said, 'This is my nation.' It was said, 'This is Musa and his nation. But look to the horizon.' So I looked and saw a great multitude. Then it was said to me, 'Look to the other side.' So I looked and saw a great multitude. It was said, 'This is your nation, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment.' Then the Prophet ﷺ rose and entered, and the people began to discuss the matter. They said, 'Who are these people who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment?' Some of them said, 'Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Prophet ﷺ .' Others said, 'Perhaps they are those who were born in Islam and never associated anything with Allah, and they mentioned some other things.' Then the Prophet ﷺ came out to them and said, 'What is it that you were discussing?' So they told him what they had said, and he said, 'They are those who do not ask for ruqyah or amulets, and they do not cauterize themselves or seek omens, rather they put their trust in their Lord.' Mu'adh bin Jabal Al-Ansari stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, am I one of them?' He said, 'Yes.' Then another man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, am I one of them?' He said, 'Ukkashah got ahead of you.'"

[AI] We spoke with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night and we had a lengthy conversation. Then we returned to our homes, and when we woke up in the morning, we went to the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "The prophets were presented to me last night, along with their followers from their nations. The Prophet came with three men from his people, and the Prophet came with a group and the Prophet came with a smaller group, and the Prophet came alone without anyone from his people. Until Musa ibn Imran came to me in a crowd of the children of Israel, and when I saw them, I was impressed, so I said, 'Lord, who are these?' He said, 'This is your brother Musa ibn Imran and his followers from the children of Israel.' I said, 'Lord, where is my nation?' It was said to me, 'Look to your right.' So I looked, and there was a black cloud approaching Makkah, with the faces of men turning black.' I said, 'Lord, who are these?' He said, 'These are your nation.' Then it was said to me, 'Are you pleased?' I said, 'Lord, I am pleased.' Then it was said to me, 'With them, there are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without any accountability.' Then 'Ukkashah ibn Mihsan, the brother of Banu Asad, stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them.' He said, 'O Allah, make him one of them.' Then another man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them.' He said, 'Ukkashah has already been granted that.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said, 'For you, my father and mother, if you can, strive to be among the seventy thousand. If you cannot, then strive to be among the people of the black cloud. If you cannot, then strive to be among the people on the horizon. Verily, I saw a people who were very much deluded.' Then the Prophet ﷺ recited the verse, 'A group [of the believers] from the earlier generations and a group from the later ones.' (Quran 56:40) The Muslims then started to speculate who these seventy thousand would be, and they said, 'We see them as people who were born into Islam and never cease to practice it until they die.' The narration of this hadith goes back to the Prophet ﷺ , who said, 'That is not the case, rather they are those who do not seek ruqya (charms or amulets), do not cauterize themselves, and do not believe in omens, but rather they put their trust in their Lord.'"

ibnhibban:6430bSaʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The nations were presented to me, and I saw a Prophet accompanied by a group, a Prophet accompanied by one man, and a Prophet with no one accompanying him. Then a huge group was raised before me, so I asked if they were my nation. It was said, 'This is Musa (Moses) and his people, but look at the horizon.' So I looked and saw another huge group. Then it was said to me, 'Look at the other side.' And there was another huge group. It was said to me, 'Your nation, along with them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being held accountable or experiencing punishment.' Then the Prophet ﷺ got up and entered. The people began to discuss and ask, 'Who are those who will enter Paradise without being held accountable?' Some said, 'Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Prophet ﷺ .' Others said, 'Perhaps they are those who were born in Islam and never associated partners with Allah and mentioned certain virtues.' The Prophet ﷺ came out to them and asked, 'What are you discussing?' They informed him of what they were saying. He said, 'They are those who do not seek cauterization, do not ask for omens, and do not believe in evil omens. They rely solely on their Lord.' Then 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan Al-Asadi stood up and asked, 'Am I among them, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Yes, you are among them.' Then another man stood up and asked, 'Am I among them, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied, 'Ukkashah beat you to it.'"

[AI] We spoke with the Prophet of Allah ﷺ one night until we became tired of talking. Then we returned to our house. When we woke up the next morning, we went to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and he said, "The prophets were presented to me last night with their followers from their nations. The Prophet would come with three people from his nation, and another Prophet would come with a group of people from his nation, and another Prophet would come with a larger group from his nation. However, there was a Prophet who did not have anyone from his nation with him, until Musa ibn Imran came to me in Ka'baka from the Children of Israel. When I saw them, I was amazed and I asked, 'O Lord, who are these?' He said, 'This is your brother, Musa ibn Imran.' Then, I saw a group of people from the tribe of Makkah, their faces were covered. I asked, 'O Lord, who are these?' He said, 'They are your nation.' I said, 'Have you granted them mercy?' He said, 'Yes, I have granted them mercy.' I said, 'O Lord, I am pleased.' He said, 'I am pleased.' Then, I was told, 'Among these people are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being held accountable.'" Then, Ukashah ibn Mihsan, the brother of Banu Asad ibn Khuzaymah, stood up and said, "O Prophet of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them." He replied, "O Allah, make him one of them." Then, another man stood up and said, "O Prophet of Allah, pray to your Lord to make me one of them."

[AI] We spoke with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night until we became tired of speaking. Then we returned to our homes. When we woke up in the morning, we talked about it and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prophets, their nations, and their followers were presented to me last night. The Prophet would pass by with three of his nation, and another Prophet would pass by with a group from his nation, and another Prophet would pass by alone from his nation. Finally, Musa ibn Imran passed by holding onto a pillar of the House of Allah, and when I saw him and his nation, I was amazed." So I said, "O Lord, who are these?" He said, "Your brother Musa ibn Imran and his followers from the nation of Banu Israel." I said, "O Lord, where is my nation?" He said, "Look to your right." So I looked and saw a group of people whose faces were blackened, and I said, "O Lord, who are these?" He said, "These are your nation, are you pleased with them?" I said, "O Lord, I am pleased." He said, "Look to your left." So I looked and saw another group of people whose faces were blackened, and I said, "O Lord, who are these?" He said, "These are also your nation, are you pleased with them?" I said, "O Lord, I am pleased." It was then said, "Among these (two groups) are seventy thousand people who will enter Paradise without being held accountable." 'Ukkasha ibn Mihsan, a member of the Banu Asad ibn Khuzayma, then stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me among them." He replied, "You are one of them." Then another man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me among them." He replied, "Ukkasha ibn Mihsan has beaten you to it."

[AI] One night, we were talking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until the conversation became too long. When we woke up in the morning, we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "The prophets were presented to me with their followers from their nations. Sometimes the prophet ﷺ had a group of his nation with him, and sometimes the prophet ﷺ was alone. Allah informed you about the people of Lot and said, 'Is there not from among you a guiding man?' I said, 'O Lord, so where are my people?' He said, 'Look to your right.' So I looked and saw the Thirab of Mecca being filled with the faces of men. He said, 'Are you satisfied, O Muhammad?' I said, 'I am satisfied, O Lord.' He said, 'Look to your left.' So I looked and saw the horizon being filled with the faces of men. He said, 'Are you satisfied, O Muhammad?' I said, 'I am satisfied, O Lord.' He said, 'Indeed, with these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being held to account.' Then 'Ukkashah ibn Mihsan al-Asadi came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to include me among them.' He said, 'O Allah, include 'Ukkashah among them.' Then another man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to include me among them.' He said, 'You have been preceded by 'Ukkashah.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said to them, 'If you can, be my father and mother's servants, then be among the seventy thousand. But if you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the Thirab. But if you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the horizon. I have seen people who have quarreled a lot.' Then he said, 'I hope that those who follow me from my nation will be a quarter of Paradise.' The people then said takbir. He then recited the verse, 'A group from the former [generations] and a few from the later [generations].'" They then started discussing among themselves who these seventy thousand were. Some of them said, "They are a group who were born into Islam and died upon it." The hadith was then elevated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "They are those who do not practice Ruqyah, nor do they believe in bad omens, and they trust in Allah."

[AI] Most of the talk was around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night, and then we woke up on him and he said, "The prophets were presented to me with their nations." So, the Prophet ﷺ passed by with a group and the prophet ﷺ had a group with him, and the prophet ﷺ had a group with him, and the prophet ﷺ had a group with him, and there was no one with him until Moses passed by with him from the Bani Israel. So, I asked, "Who are these?" It was said: "This is your brother Moses and with him is the Children of Israel." So, I asked, "Where are my nation?" It was said: "Look to your right." So, I looked and saw the horizons filled with the faces of men. Then it was said to me, "Look to your left." So, I looked and saw the horizons filled with the faces of men. It was said to me, "Are you satisfied?" I said, "I am satisfied, O Lord, I am satisfied, O Lord!" It was said to me, "Indeed, with these (people) there are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being held accountable." The Prophet ﷺ said, "They are a ransom for you and your parents, if you are able to be one of the seventy thousand, then do so. If you fall short, then be one of the Dustar (people of the horizon). And if you fall short (of that), then be one of the Afar (people of the wilderness). Indeed, I have seen people who are outnumbered." So, 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan Al-Asadi stood up and said, "Ask Allah to make me one of the seventy (thousand)." So, he supplicated for him. Another man stood up and said, "Ask Allah to make me one of them." He said, "Ukkashah has beaten you to it." He (the man) said: "Tell us who are the seventy thousand?" He (the Prophet) said: "They are those who do not seek Ruqyah (charms or spells), and do not believe in treating through a good or bad omen, nor do they get themselves branded (cauterized), and they put their trust (only) in their Lord."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "One day the prophets were presented before me. The Prophet ﷺ would come and only one man would accompany him, and the Prophet ﷺ would come and only two men would accompany him, and the Prophet ﷺ would come and only a few people would accompany him. Similarly, I looked and saw a large number of black people, so I thought they were my nation. When they approached, I saw that they were the people of Musa (Moses). Then it was said to me, 'Look again,' so I looked and saw many more black people. It was said, 'These are your people.' So I became happy and pleased. Then it was said to me, 'Among these are seventy thousand of your people who will enter Paradise without being held accountable or punished.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left while we were discussing this matter, and the Muslims inquired, 'Who are these seventy thousand?' They all agreed that they were those who were born in Islam and did not mix anything of shirk (associating partners with Allah) with it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and said, 'They are those who do not seek ruqya (protective charms or superstitious remedies), nor do they seek omens, nor do they practice cauterization, and they rely solely on their Lord.' Then 'Ukkasha stood up and said, 'Pray to Allah to make me one of them.' He ﷺ said, 'You are one of them.' Another man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them.' He ﷺ said, 'Ukkasha has preceded you in that.'"

[AI] When the spoils from Iraq were brought to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), the treasurer of the Bayt al-Mal (the Public Treasury) said to him, "I will put it in the Bayt al-Mal." Umar replied, "No, by the Lord of the Kāba, it will not be housed under a roof until I have distributed it." He ordered that it be placed in the mosque and covered it with leather to guard it with men from the Muhajirun and the Ansar. The next morning, he went there with Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib and Abdur Rahman ibn Awf. He took the hand of one of them or one of them took his hand. When they saw him, they uncovered the leather from the wealth, and he saw a sight unlike any he'd seen before: gold, rubies, beryl, and pearls gleaming. He wept. One of them said to him, "By Allah, this is not a day to weep but a day of gratitude and joy." He replied, "By Allah, I do not cry for what you think. By Allah, no people have ever received this much except that conflict arose among them." He then turned towards the Qiblah and raised his hands to the sky, saying, "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from being deceived, for I hear You say {We will gradually lead them to destruction from where they do not know} (Surah Al-A'raf 7:182)." Then he asked, "Where is Suraqah ibn Malik?" Suraqah was brought to him, his arms bare and thin. Umar gave him the bracelets of Khosrow and said, "Wear them." He did so and Umar said, "Say, Allahu Akbar." Suraqah said, "Allahu Akbar." Umar continued, "Say, all praise is due to Allah who took these from Khosrow son of Hormuz and adorned Suraqah ibn Malik, an Arab from the Bani Mudlij." Umar started to turn some of the treasure over and said, "The one who delivered this must indeed be trustworthy." A man said to him, "I will tell you. You are Allah's trustee, and they deliver to you because you deliver to Allah. If you transgress, they will transgress." Umar said, "You spoke the truth," and then he distributed it.

Al-Shafi'i mentioned that Umar gave the bracelets to Suraqah because the Prophet ﷺ once told Suraqah, looking at his arms, "It is as if I can see you wearing the bracelets of Khosrow." Al-Shafi'i also narrated from reliable people of Medina that Umar ibn al-Khattab spent on the people afflicted by famine until rain fell and they could relocate. Umar went out to them riding a horse, watched them as they moved with their belongings, and his eyes filled with tears. A man from the Bani Muharib ibn Khasfah said to him, "I bear witness that this has been a relief for you, and you are not the son of a slave woman." Umar replied, "Woe to you! That would have been true if I had spent on them from my wealth or the wealth of Al-Khattab. I only spent on them from the wealth of Allah, the Exalted."

He stood with Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman and Uthman ibn Hunayf and said, "How have you two managed to bear the burden of the earth that it cannot bear?" They said, "We have carried it by a command that it can bear." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to carry it, it would be weakened." Uthman ibn Hunayf said, "I have carried it by a command that it can bear, without any great favor." Umar then said, "See that you have not carried the burden of the earth that it cannot bear." They said, "No." Umar said, "If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq without needing any man after me." He said, "Only four things came upon him until he was struck." He said, "And between me and him, there is no one except Abdullah ibn Abbas in the morning." He said, "And he used to stand between the rows. If he saw any disorder among them, he would say, 'Stand still until there is no disorder among them.' Then he would proceed and say the takbir." He said, "And perhaps he would recite Surah Yusuf or An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'a until the people gathered." He said, "And it was only that he would say the takbir." He said, "I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me,' when he was stabbed. Then he flew out of the wound with a double-edged knife that would not pass by anyone to the right or left except that it would stab him, until he stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When he saw that, a Muslim man threw a cloak on him. When the assassin thought that he had taken hold of him, he slit his own throat." He said, "And Umar held the hand of Abdullah ibn Awf and brought him forward." He said, "Who will take care of Umar? He has seen what he has seen." He said, "Regarding the surroundings of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar while they were saying, 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah.' Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf led them in a light prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went for a while and then came back and said, 'The slave of Al-Mughirah killed him.' He said, 'Really?' After they all spoke with their tongues and prayed towards their qibla and performed the Hajj according to their rites, he was brought to his house. We then left with him." He said, "And it was as if the people had not been affected by any calamity before that day. Some were saying, 'There is no harm,' while others were saying, 'We fear for him.' So they brought some wine and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then they brought some milk and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They recognized that he was dead, and he mentioned this incident in his will and in the command to consult each other."
