Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas used to recommend these five (statements) and say that the Prophet ﷺ said so (and they are): "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world, and seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

Seek refuge with Allah by saying the words which the Prophet ﷺ used to say while seeking refuge with Allah, "0 Allah! I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from reaching a degraded geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world and from the punishment in the grave."

تَعَوَّذُوا بِكَلِمَاتٍ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِهِنَّ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us these words as he used to teach us the Book (Qur'an): "O Allah! seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to (senile) geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the affliction of the world and from the punishment in the Hereafter."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُعَلِّمُنَا هَؤُلاَءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ كَمَا تُعَلَّمُ الْكِتَابَةُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ نُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

The Prophet ﷺ used to say after the tashahhud: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment in Hell, and I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment in the grave, and I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of antichrist, and I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of life and death."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ بَعْدَ التَّشَهُّدِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

"Allahumma inni a udhu bika min adhabil-qabri wa a 'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nar, wa a 'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa audhu bika min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal (O Allah, I seek refuge with you from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the torment of the Fire, and I seek refuge with You from the trial of the Dajjal)."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nari, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat wa a'udhu bika min sharril-masihid-dajjali (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the torment of the Fire, and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death, and I seek refuge with You from the evil of the Al-Masihid-Dajjal.)"

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas used to recommend these five (statements) and say that the Prophet ﷺ said so (and they are): "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world, and seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave." عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ البُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

[AI] Ibn Abbas used to say on this pulpit, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah from four things after every prayer. He used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire, O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trials and tribulations, whether they are apparent or hidden, and O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trials and tribulations of the Antichrist.'"

كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلاةٍ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْأَعْوَرِ الْكَذَّابِ

[AI] While we were at the wall of Bani Najjar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he was riding a mule, and his mule stumbled. Suddenly, there were graves in the wall. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who knows these graves?" A man said, "I do, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Who are they?" The man replied, "They died in shirk (polytheism)." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If it were not for the fact that you would stop burying them, I would ask Allah to let you hear the punishment of the grave that I hear. Verily, this Ummah (nation) is tested in their graves." Then he turned his face towards us and said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, and seek refuge with Allah from the trials, whether they appear or remain hidden. Seek refuge with Allah from the deception of the Dajjal (the False Messiah)."

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ فِي حَائِطٍ لِبَنِي النَّجَّارِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ فَحَادَتْ بِهِ بَغْلَتُهُ فَإِذَا فِي الْحَائِطِ أَقْبُرٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ يَعْرِفُ هَؤُلَاءِ الْأَقْبُرَ؟ » فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «مَا هُمْ؟ » قَالَ مَاتُوا فِي الشِّرْكِ قَالَ «لَوْلَا أَنْ لَا تَدَافَنُوا لَدَعَوْتُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُسْمِعَكُمْ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ الَّذِي أَسْمَعُ مِنْهُ إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ تُبْتَلَى فِي قُبُورِهَا» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ»

[AI] While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was within the walls of Banu Najjar and he was riding on his mule, and we were with him, he said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave, seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the fire." We said, "We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave, we seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the fire." He said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the trials, whether apparent or hidden." We said, "We seek refuge with Allah from the trials, whether apparent or hidden." He said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the trial of the Dajjal (Antichrist)." They said, "We seek refuge with Allah from the trial of the Dajjal."

بَيْنَمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَائِطٍ لِبَنِي النَّجَّارِ وَهُوَ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ لَهُ وَنَحْنُ مَعَهُ قَالَ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ» قُلْنَا نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ قَالَ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ» قُلْنَا نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ قَالَ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ» قَالُوا نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge after prayer from four things, saying: "I seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave, I seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the Hellfire, I seek refuge with Allah from the trials and tribulations, both apparent and hidden, and I seek refuge with Allah from the Fitnah (trial) of the Antichrist."

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ فِي دُبُرِ صَلَاتِهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ يَقُولُ «أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْأَعْوَرِ الْكَذَّابِ»

"Allahumma inni a udhu bika min adhabil-qabri wa a 'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nar, wa a 'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa audhu bika min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal (O Allah, I seek refuge with you from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the torment of the Fire, and I seek refuge with You from the trial of the Dajjal)." عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ»

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ»

"إِنَّ هذه الأُمَّةَ تُبْتَلَى في قبُورِها فلولَا أَن لا تَدَافنوا لَدَعوتُ اللَّه يُسْمِعَكُمْ من عذابِ القْبرِ الذى أَسْمَعُ مِنْهُ، تَعَوَّذُوا باللَّه من عذابِ النَّارِ تَعَوَّذوا باللَّه من عذابِ القبْرِ، تعوَّذوا باللَّه من الفِتَن ما ظَهر منها وما بطنَ، تَعَوَّذُوا باللَّه من فتنةِ الدجَّال".

"اللهُمَّ إِنى أَعُوذُ بكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ، وَأعُوذُ بكَ مِنْ عَذَاب النَّارِ، وَأعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ المَحَيَا وَالمَمَاتِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ المَسِيح الدَّجَّالِ ".

خ، ن عن أبي هريرة، ورواه مسلم من حديث ابن عباس: أن النبي ﷺ كان

"اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِن البُخْل، وَأعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الجبنِ، وَأَعُوذُ بكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُرَدَّ إِلى أرْذَل العُمُر، وَأعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا، وَأعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عذاب القَبْرِ ".

"اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بكَ مِنَ الكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ والمغرم وَالْمَأثَم، وأعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتنَةِ الدَّجَالِ وَأعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبرِ وأعوذ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ".

"لَوْلا أنْ تَدَافَنُوا لَدَعَوْتُ الله أنْ يُسْمِعَكُم مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ الَّذي أَسْمَعُ مِنْهُ، إنَّ هَذ الأمَّةَ تبتَلَى في قُبُورها، تَعَوَّذوا بالله من عذَابَ النّارِ وعَذَاب القَبْرَ، وتَعَوَّذُوُا بالله من الفتنِ ما ظهرَ مِنْهَا وما بطنَ، تَعَوَّذُوا بالله من فتْنَة الدَّجَّال".

"قَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ تَعَوَّذُوا بِالله مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ ثَلاثًا، قُلنَا: نَعُوذُ بِالله مِنَ النَّارِ، نَعُوذُ بالله مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، نَعُوذُ بالله من الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ، نَعُوذُ بِالله مِن فِتْنَةِ الدجَّالِ. قُلْنَا: نَعُوذُ بِالله مِن فِتْنَةِ الدجَّالِ".

"عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أنَّ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ فِى دُبرِ الصَّلَاةِ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ، وأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الفِتَنِ بَاطِنِهَا وَظَاهِرهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الأَعْوَرِ الكَذَّابِ".

"عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ فِى صَلَاتِهِ مِنْ أَرْبَعْ يَقُول: أَعُوذُ بِالله مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بالله مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِالئه مِنَ الفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَن، وَأَعُوذُ بِالله مِنَ الأعْوَرِ الكَذَّابِ".
