Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before Islam). The Prophet ﷺ lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, "Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet ﷺ ?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his face towards him and said, "Leave them." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signaled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of ʿId, and the Black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I requested the Prophet ﷺ or he asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then the Prophet ﷺ made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on! O Bani Arfida," till I got tired. The Prophet ﷺ asked me, "Are you satisfied (Is that sufficient for you)?" I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.

دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِغِنَاءِ بُعَاثَ فَاضْطَجَعَ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ وَحَوَّلَ وَجْهَهُ وَدَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَانْتَهَرَنِي وَقَالَ مِزْمَارَةُ الشَّيْطَانِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ فَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا فَلَمَّا غَفَلَ غَمَزْتُهُمَا فَخَرَجَتَا وَكَانَ يَوْمَ عِيدٍ يَلْعَبُ السُّودَانُ بِالدَّرَقِ وَالْحِرَابِ فَإِمَّا سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَإِمَّا قَالَ تَشْتَهِينَ تَنْظُرِينَ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَأَقَامَنِي وَرَاءَهُ خَدِّي عَلَى خَدِّهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ دُونَكُمْ يَا بَنِي أَرْفِدَةَ حَتَّى إِذَا مَلِلْتُ قَالَ حَسْبُكِ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَاذْهَبِي

Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, "Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Messenger of Allah ﷺ !" It happened on the ʿId day and Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Bakr! There is an ʿId for every nation and this is our ʿId."

دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ مِنْ جَوَارِي الأَنْصَارِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِمَا تَقَاوَلَتِ الأَنْصَارُ يَوْمَ بُعَاثَ قَالَتْ وَلَيْسَتَا بِمُغَنِّيَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَمَزَامِيرُ الشَّيْطَانِ فِي بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَذَلِكَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَهَذَا عِيدُنَا

On the days of Mina, (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) Abu Bakr came to her while two young girls were beating the tambourine and the Prophet ﷺ was lying covered with his clothes. Abu Bakr scolded them and the Prophet ﷺ uncovered his face and said to Abu Bakr, "Leave them, for these days are the days of ʿId and the days of Mina." ʿAisha further said, "Once the Prophet ﷺ was screening me and I was watching the display of black slaves in the Mosque and (ʿUmar) scolded them. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Leave them. O Bani Arfida! (carry on), you are safe (protected)'."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُدَفِّفَانِ وَتَضْرِبَانِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُتَغَشٍّ بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ وَتِلْكَ الأَيَّامُ أَيَّامُ مِنًى وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَزَجَرَهُمْ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ دَعْهُمْ أَمْنًا بَنِي أَرْفِدَةَ يَعْنِي مِنَ الأَمْنِ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Bu'ath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, i.e. Khazraj and Aus, before Islam.) The Prophet ﷺ reclined on the bed and turned his face to the other side. Abu Bakr came and scolded me and said protestingly, "Instrument of Satan in the presence of Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his face towards him and said, "Leave them." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I waved the two girls to go away and they left. It was the day of ʿId when negroes used to play with leather shields and spears. Either I requested Messenger of Allah ﷺ or he himself asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then he let me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on, O Bani Arfida (i.e. negroes)!" When I got tired, he asked me if that was enough. I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِغِنَاءِ بُعَاثَ فَاضْطَجَعَ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ وَحَوَّلَ وَجْهَهُ فَدَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَانْتَهَرَنِي وَقَالَ مِزْمَارَةُ الشَّيْطَانِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا فَلَمَّا غَفَلَ غَمَزْتُهُمَا فَخَرَجَتَا قَالَتْ وَكَانَ يَوْمُ عِيدٍ يَلْعَبُ السُّودَانُ بِالدَّرَقِ وَالْحِرَابِ فَإِمَّا سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَإِمَّا قَالَ تَشْتَهِينَ تَنْظُرِينَ فَقَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَأَقَامَنِي وَرَاءَهُ خَدِّي عَلَى خَدِّهِ وَيَقُولُ دُونَكُمْ بَنِي أَرْفِدَةَ حَتَّى إِذَا مَلِلْتُ قَالَ حَسْبُكِ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَاذْهَبِي

That during the Mina days, Abu Bakr came to her, while there where two girls with her, beating drums, and the Prophet ﷺ was (lying) covering himself with his garment. Abu Bakr rebuked the two girls, but the Prophet ﷺ uncovered his face and said, "O Abu Bakr! Leave them, for these are the days of Id (festival)." Those days were the days of Mina-. ʿAisha added, "I was being screened by the Prophet ﷺ while I was watching the Ethiopians playing in the Mosque. ʿUmar rebuked them, but the Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave them, O Bani Arfida! Play. (for) you are safe."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُدَفِّفَانِ وَتَضْرِبَانِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُتَغَشٍّ بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ وَتِلْكَ الأَيَّامُ أَيَّامُ مِنًى وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَزَجَرَهُمْ {عُمَرُ} فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ دَعْهُمْ أَمْنًا بَنِي أَرْفَدَةَ يَعْنِي مِنَ الأَمْنِ

That once Abu Bakr came to her on the day of ʿId-ul-Fitr or ʿId ul Adha while the Prophet ﷺ was with her and there were two girl singers with her, singing songs of the Ansar about the day of Buath. Abu Bakr said twice. "Musical instrument of Satan!" But the Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave them Abu Bakr, for every nation has an ʿId (i.e. festival) and this day is our ʿId."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ عِنْدَهَا يَوْمَ فِطْرٍ أَوْ أَضْحًى وَعِنْدَهَا قَيْنَتَانِ {تُغَنِّيَانِ} بِمَا تَقَاذَفَتِ الأَنْصَارُ يَوْمَ بُعَاثَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مِزْمَارُ الشَّيْطَانِ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَإِنَّ عِيدَنَا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ

Aisha said, "While the Ethiopians were playing with their small spears, Messenger of Allah ﷺ screened me behind him and I watched (that display) and kept on watching till I left on my own." So you may estimate of what age a little girl may listen to amusement.

كَانَ الْحَبَشُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِحِرَابِهِمْ فَسَتَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَنْظُرُ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنَا أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ تَسْمَعُ اللَّهْوَ

The Prophet ﷺ was screening me with his Rida' (garment covering the upper part of the body) while I was looking at the Ethiopians who were playing in the courtyard of the mosque. (I continued watching) till I was satisfied. So you may deduce from this event how a little girl (who has not reached the age of puberty) who is eager to enjoy amusement should be treated in this respect.

رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّذِي أَسْأَمُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللَّهْوِ

Abu Bakr came to see me and I had two girls with me from among the girls of the Ansar and they were singing what the Ansar recited to one another at the Battle of Bu'ath. They were not, however, singing girls. Upon this Abu Bakr said: What I (the playing of) this wind instrument of Satan in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and this too on 'Id day? Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Abu Bakr, every people have a festival and it is our festival (so let them play on).

دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ مِنْ جَوَارِي الأَنْصَارِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِمَا تَقَاوَلَتْ بِهِ الأَنْصَارُ يَوْمَ بُعَاثٍ قَالَتْ وَلَيْسَتَا بِمُغَنِّيَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَبِمُزْمُورِ الشَّيْطَانِ فِي بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَذَلِكَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَهَذَا عِيدُنَا

Abu Bakr, leave them alone for these are the days of 'Id. And 'A'isha said: I recapitulate to my mind the fact that once the Messenger of Allah ﷺ screened me with his mantle and I saw the sports of the Abyssinians, and I was only a girl, and so you can well imagine how a girl of tender age is fond of watching the sport.

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُغَنِّيَانِ وَتَضْرِبَانِ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُسَجًّى بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْهُ وَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ وَقَالَتْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ فَاقْدِرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْعَرِبَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ

BY Allah, I remember the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing on the door of my apartment screening me with his mantle enabling me to see the sport of the Abyssinians as they played with their daggers in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upom him). He (the Holy Prophet) kept standing for my sake till I was satiated and then I went back; and thus you can well imagine how long a girl tender of age who is fond of sports (could have watched it).

عَائِشَةُ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِحِرَابِهِمْ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِكَىْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ مِنْ أَجْلِي حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّتِي أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ حَرِيصَةً عَلَى اللَّهْوِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came (to my apartment) while there were two girls with me singing the song of the Battle of Buʿāth. He lay down on the bed and turned around his face. Then Abū Bakr came and he scolded me and said: Oh! this musical instrument of the devil in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards him and said, "Leave them alone."

When he ˹the Prophet˺ became unattentive, I hinted at them and they went out. It was the day of the ʿĪd ˹festival˺ and the black men were playing with shields and spears. ˹I do not remember˺ whether I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or whether he asked me: "Would you like to watch?". I said: Yes. I stood behind him with his face parallel to my face, and he said: "O Banū Arfadah, be busy ˹in your sport.˺" until I was satiated. He said ˹to me˺, "Is that enough?" I said: Yes. Upon this he said, "Then go."

دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِغِنَاءِ بُعَاثٍ، فَاضْطَجَعَ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ وَحَوَّلَ وَجْهَهُ۔ فَدَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَانْتَهَرَنِي وَقَالَ: مِزْمَارُ الشَّيْطَانِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟! فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: «دَعْهُمَا۔»

فَلَمَّا غَفَلَ غَمَزْتُهُمَا فَخَرَجَتَا، وَكَانَ يَوْمَ عِيدٍ يَلْعَبُ السُّودَانُ بِالدَّرَقِ وَالْحِرَابِ۔ فَإِمَّا سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَإِمَّا قَالَ: «تَشْتَهِينَ تَنْظُرِينَ؟» فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ۔ فَأَقَامَنِي وَرَاءَهُ خَدِّي عَلَى خَدِّهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: «دُونَكُمْ يَا بَنِي أَرْفَدَةَ۔» حَتَّى إِذَا مَلِلْتُ قَالَ: «حَسْبُكِ؟» قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ۔ قَالَ: «فَاذْهَبِي۔»

'A'isha reported that some Abyssinians came and gave a demonstration of armed fight on the 'Id day in the mosque. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ invited me (to see that fight). I placed my head on his shoulder and began to see their sport till it was I who turned away from watching them.

جَاءَ حَبَشٌ يَزْفِنُونَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَدَعَانِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَوَضَعْتُ رَأْسِي عَلَى مَنْكِبِهِ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنَا الَّتِي أَنْصَرِفُ عَنِ النَّظَرِ إِلَيْهِمْ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her and there were two girls with her who were beating the duff. Abu Bakr scolded them, but the Prophet ﷺ said: "Leave them, for every people has an 'Eid."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ تَضْرِبَانِ بِدُفَّيْنِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ دَعْهُنَّ فَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا

"The black people came and played in front of the Prophet ﷺ on the day of 'Eid. He called me and I watched them from over his shoulder, and I continued to watch them until I was the one who moved away."

جَاءَ السُّودَانُ يَلْعَبُونَ بَيْنَ يَدَىِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فَدَعَانِي فَكُنْتُ أَطَّلِعُ إِلَيْهِمْ مِنْ فَوْقِ عَاتِقِهِ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنَا الَّتِي انْصَرَفْتُ

"I remember the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covering me with his Rida' while I was watching the Ethiopians playing in the masjid, until I got bored. So you should understand the keenness of young girls to play."

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا أَسْأَمُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللَّهْوِ

“Abu Bakr entered upon me, and there were two girls from the Ansar with me, singing about the Day of Bu'ath.” She said: “And they were not really singers. Abu Bakr said: 'The wind instruments of Satan in the house of the Prophet ?' That was on the day of 'Eid(Al-Fitr). But the Prophet said: 'O Abu Bakr, every people has its festival and this is our festival.' ”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her and there were two girls with her who were beating the duff. Abu Bakr scolded them, but the Prophet ﷺ said: "Leave them, for every people has an 'Eid." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1593)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حُجْرَتِي يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ كَيْفَ يَلْعَبُونَ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا أَسْأَمُ فَاقْدِرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللهْوِ

[AI] Abu Bakr entered upon her and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with her on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, and she had two slave girls who were playing the tambourines. Abu Bakr scolded them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, O Abu Bakr, for every nation has a celebration, and indeed, our celebration is this day."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَهَا يَوْمَ فِطْرٍ أَوْ أَضْحًى وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ تَضْرِبَانِ بِدُفَّيْنِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ دَعْنَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَإِنَّ عِيدَنَا هَذَا الْيَوْمَ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her and there were two girls with her who were beating the duff. Abu Bakr scolded them, but the Prophet ﷺ said: "Leave them, for every people has an 'Eid." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1593)

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ تَضْرِبَانِبِدُفَّيْنِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ دَعْهُنَّ فَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا

[AI] "And by Allah, I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at the door of my room while the Abyssinians were playing with spears, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would cover me with his cloak so that I could see their play between his ear and shoulder. Then he would stand up for me until I left, estimating the value of the young, eager girl who was devoted to playful amusement."

وَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِالْحِرَابِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِأَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ مِنْ بَيْنِ أُذُنِهِ وَعَاتِقِهِ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ مِنْ أَجْلِي حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّتِي أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللهْوِ

[AI] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at the door of my room while the Abyssinians were playing with their spears. He covered me with his cloak so that I could watch their play, then he stood up until I left.

لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِحِرَابِهِمْ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِكَيْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّتِي أَنْصَرِفُ

BY Allah, I remember the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing on the door of my apartment screening me with his mantle enabling me to see the sport of the Abyssinians as they played with their daggers in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upom him). He (the Holy Prophet) kept standing for my sake till I was satiated and then I went back; and thus you can well imagine how long a girl tender of age who is fond of sports (could have watched it). وَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِكَيْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ مِنْ أَجْلِي حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّتِي أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللهْوِ

Abu Bakr, leave them alone for these are the days of 'Id. And 'A'isha said: I recapitulate to my mind the fact that once the Messenger of Allah ﷺ screened me with his mantle and I saw the sports of the Abyssinians, and I was only a girl, and so you can well imagine how a girl of tender age is fond of watching the sport. أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُغَنِّيَانِ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُسَجًّى بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْهُ وَقَالَ «دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ» قَالَتْ وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْعَرِبَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ «

[AI] That Abu Bakr entered upon her during the days of Eid and with her were two slave girls who were singing, drumming and dancing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wearing a loose garment and was hiding from them. Abu Bakr scolded them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ revealed his face and said, "Leave them, O Abu Bakr, for these are the days of Eid and those are the days of Mina." Aisha said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covering me with his garment while I was looking at the Abyssinians playing in the mosque, and I was a young girl."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا فِي أَيَّامِ عِيدٍ وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ وَتُدَفِّفَانِ وَتَضْرِبَانِ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُتَغَشٍّ بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ وَقَالَ «دَعْهُنَّ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ وَتِلْكَ أَيَّامُ مِنًى» قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ

[AI] Abu Bakr entered upon them while they had two slave girls singing with their tambourines and singing in their days. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was covered with his garment, so Abu Bakr scolded them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then uncovered his garment and said, "Leave them, O Abu Bakr, for it is the days of celebration."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِدُفَّيْنِ وَتُغَنِّيَانِ فِي أَيَّامِهِمَا وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُسْتَتِرٌ بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثَوْبَهُ وَقَالَ «دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ»

"I remember the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covering me with his Rida' while I was watching the Ethiopians playing in the masjid, until I got bored. So you should understand the keenness of young girls to play." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1595)

عَائِشَةُ وَلَمَّا قَدِمَ وَفْدُ الْحَبَشَةِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَامُوا يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّذِي أَسْأَمُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللَّهْوِ

Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, "Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Messenger of Allah ﷺ !" It happened on the ʿId day and Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Bakr! There is an ʿId for every nation and this is our ʿId." (Using translation from Bukhārī 952)

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ مِنْ جَوَارِي الْأَنْصَارِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِمَا تَقَاوَلَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ يَوْمَ بُعَاثٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَمِزْمَارُ الشَّيْطَانِ فِي بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ وَذَلِكَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلَّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَهَذَا عِيدُنَا»

[AI] "And by Allah, I truly witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing by the door of my room, while the Abyssinians were playing with their spears inside the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ covered me with his cloak so that I could watch their play from between his ears and shoulders. Then he stood up for me until I left, so estimate the value of a young girl in pursuit of amusement for the sake of Allah."

«وَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِالْحِرَابِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِأَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ مِنْ بَيْنِ أُذُنَيْهِ وَعَاتِقِهِ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ مِنْ أَجْلِي حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّذِي أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ لِلَّهْوِ»

[AI] I have seen the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , standing at the door of my room while the Abyssinians played with their spears in the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , would cover me with his cloak so that I could watch their play. He would stand up for me until I had finished watching, and then he would leave. May you measure, O son of my sister, the quantity of the young, eager slave girl's talk about frivolous matters.

«لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِحِرَابِهِمْ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِكَيْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ فَيَقُومُ مِنْ أَجْلِي قَائِمًا حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَكُونُ أَنَا أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرْ يَا ابْنَ أُخْتِي قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللهْوِ»

[AI] Abu Bakr entered upon me on the day of Eid, and I had two singing slave girls who were reminiscing about the day of the Battle of Bu'ath, the day when the leaders of Aws and Khazraj were killed. Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah! Is this the Zemzam of Satan that is with you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "O Abu Bakr, indeed every nation has its own feast day, and this day is our feast day."

دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ عَلَيَّ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ تَذْكُرَانِ يَوْمَ بُعَاثٍ يَوْمَ قُتِلَ فِيهِ صَنَادِيدُ الْأَوْسِ وَالْخَزْرَجِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عِبَادَ اللهِ أَمَزْمُورُ الشَّيْطَانِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَالْيَوْمُ عِيدُنَا»

[AI] Abu Bakr entered upon her and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with her on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, and she had two young girls who were singing. Abu Bakr said, "Are these the musical instruments of Satan?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, O Abu Bakr, for every nation has a festival and this is our festival."

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَهَا فِي يَوْمِ فِطْرٍ أَوْ أَضْحًى وَعِنْدَهَا قَيْنَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مِزْمَارُ الشَّيْطَانِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «دَعْنَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَإِنَّ عِيدُنَا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ»

[AI] "She had two female slaves who were singing on the day of 'Eid, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with her. He did not prevent them. Abu Bakr entered and scolded them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Leave them, O Abu Bakr, for every nation has a celebration, and this is our celebration.'"

أَنَّهَا كَانَ عِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ وَعِنْدَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَنْهَاهَا فَدَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَانْتَهَرَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «دَعْهَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَهَذَا عِيدُنَا»

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُغَنِّيَانِ تَضْرِبَانِ بِدُفَّيْنِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُسَجًّى بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ «دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ»

"The black people came and played in front of the Prophet ﷺ on the day of 'Eid. He called me and I watched them from over his shoulder, and I continued to watch them until I was the one who moved away." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1594)

«جَاءَ السُّودَانُ يَلْعَبُونَ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فَدَعَانِي وَكُنْتُ أَطَّلِعُ إِلَيْهِمْ مِنْ فَوْقِ عَاتِقِهِ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنَا الَّتِي انْصَرَفْتُ»

[AI] "By Allah, I have indeed seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at the door of my room while the Abyssinians were playing with spears in the Mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would cover me with his cloak so that I could watch their play between his ears and eyes. Then he would stand up for me until I leave. Estimate the value of a young servant girl eager for play."

وَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ عَلَى بَابِ حُجْرَتِي وَالْحَبَشَةُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِالْحِرَابِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ لِأَنْظُرَ إِلَى لَعِبِهِمْ بَيْنَ أُذُنَيْهِ وَعَيْنَيْهِ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ مِنْ أَجْلِي حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَنَا الَّتِي أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ الْحَرِيصَةِ عَلَى اللهْوِ

[AI] Abu Bakr As-Siddiq entered (to Aisha) and she had two slave girls with her. They were singing, playing the tambourine, and clapping their hands. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in, wrapped in his garment (to hide himself). Abu Bakr rebuked them, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ uncovered his face and said: "Leave them alone, O Abu Bakr, for these are the days of 'Eid and the days of Mina." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Madinah at that time. 'A'isha said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covering me with his garment, while I was watching the Abyssinians playing in the mosque, and I was a young girl."

أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ ؓ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُغَنِّيَانِ وَتُدَفِّفَانِ وَتَضْرِبَانِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَغَشٍّ بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُنَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ وَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ وَتِلْكَ أَيَّامُ مِنًى وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِثَوْبِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before Islam). The Prophet ﷺ lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, "Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet ﷺ ?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his face towards him and said, "Leave them." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signaled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of ʿId, and the Black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I requested the Prophet ﷺ or he asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then the Prophet ﷺ made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on! O Bani Arfida," till I got tired. The Prophet ﷺ asked me, "Are you satisfied (Is that sufficient for you)?" I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave. (Using translation from Bukhārī 949)

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِغِنَاءِ بُعَاثٍ فَاضْطَجَعَ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ وَحَوَّلَ وَجْهَهُ وَدَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَانْتَهَرَنِي وَقَالَ مِزْمَارَةُ الشَّيْطَانِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا فَلَمَّا غَفَلَ غَمَزْتُهُمَا فَخَرَجَتَا وَقَالَتْ كَانَ يَوْمُ عِيدٍ يَلْعَبُ السُّودَانُ بِالدَّرَقِ وَالْحِرَابِ فَإِمَّا سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِمَّا قَالَ تَشْتَهِينَ تَنْظُرِينَ؟ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَأَقَامَنِي وَرَاءَهُ خَدِّي عَلَى خَدِّهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ دُونَكُمْ يَا بَنِي أَرْفِدَةَ حَتَّى إِذَا مَلَلْتُ قَالَ حَسْبُكِ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ اذْهَبِي

[AI] Abu Bakr entered and I had two slave girls from the Ansar singing what the Ansar used to say on the day of Bua'ath or Bughaath. Al-Harithi doubted and said, "But they are not singers." So Abu Bakr said, "Are the horns of Satan in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? And this is the day of Eid." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Bakr, indeed every nation has a festival, and this is our festival."

دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ وَعِنْدِي جَارِيَتَانِ مِنْ جَوَارِيِّ الْأَنْصَارِ تُغَنِّيَانِ بِمَا تَقَاوَلَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ يَوْمَ بُعَاثٍ أَوْ بُغَاثٍ شَكَّ الْحَارِثِيُّ قَالَتْ وَلَيْسَتَا بِمُغَنِّيَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ أَمَزْمُورُ الشَّيْطَانِ فِي بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمُ عِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنَّ لِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ عِيدًا وَهَذَا عِيدُنَا

[AI] Bakr entered upon her while she had two servant girls who were singing, clapping, and playing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came wearing a cloak, so Abu Bakr scolded them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ uncovered his face and said, "Leave them alone, O Abu Bakr, for these are the days of celebration and those are the days of Mina, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is in Madinah." Aisha said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ covering me with his cloak while I was watching the Abyssinians play in the mosque, and I was a young girl."

بَكْرٍ ؓ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُغَنِّيَانِ وَتُدَفِّفَانِ وَتَضْرِبَانِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَغَشٍّ بِثَوْبِهِ فَانْتَهَرَهُنَّ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ وَقَالَ دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ وَتِلْكَ أَيَّامُ مِنًى وَرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتُرُنِي بِثَوْبِهِ وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ

"دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بكر؛ فإنها أَيَامُ عِيد" قَالَ ﷺ لأبِى بَكر

حين دَخَلَ عَلَى عَائِشة، وَعِنْدَها جَارِيتَانِ -في أَيام مِنًى- تُغَنِّيان وَتَضْرِبَان بِالدُّفِّ وَالنَّبِىُّ ﷺ مُتَغَشِّ بِثَوْبِه، فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَكَشَفَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ عن وَجْهه وَقَالَ ذَلك.
