I was the leader of the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq or (the narrator doubted) I was among the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq that came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we reached the Prophet, we did not find him in his house. We found there Aisha, the Mother of the Believers. She ordered that a dish called Khazirah should be prepared for us. It was then prepared. A tray containing dates was then presented to us. (The narrator Qutaybah did not mention the word qina', tray). Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came. He asked: Has anything been served to you or ordered for you? We replied: Yes, Messenger of Allah. While we were sitting in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we suddenly saw that a shepherd was driving a herd of sheep to their fold. He had with him a newly-born lamb that was crying. He (the Prophet) asked him: What did it bear, O so and so? He replied: A ewe. He then said: Slaughter for us in its place a sheep. Do not think that we are slaughtering it for you. We have one hundred sheep and we do not want their number to increase. Whenever a ewe is born, we slaughter a sheep in its place. (The narrator says that the Prophet ﷺ used the word la tahsabanna, do not think). I (the narrator Laqit) then said: Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who has something (wrong) in her tongue, i.e. she is insolent. He said: Then divorce her. I said: Messenger of Allah, she had company with me and I have children from her. He said: Then ask her (to obey you). If there is something good in her, she will do so (obey); and do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl. I said: Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution. He said: Perform ablution in full and make the fingers go through the beard and snuff with water well except when you are fasting.  

كُنْتُ وَافِدَ بَنِي الْمُنْتَفِقِ أَوْ فِي وَفْدِ بَنِي الْمُنْتَفِقِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ نُصَادِفْهُ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ وَصَادَفْنَا عَائِشَةَ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَ فَأَمَرَتْ لَنَا بِخَزِيرَةٍ فَصُنِعَتْ لَنَا قَالَ وَأُتِينَا بِقِنَاعٍ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ قُتَيْبَةُ الْقِنَاعَ وَالْقِنَاعُ الطَّبَقُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلْ أَصَبْتُمْ شَيْئًا أَوْ أُمِرَ لَكُمْ بِشَىْءٍ قَالَ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ جُلُوسٌ إِذْ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِي غَنَمَهُ إِلَى الْمُرَاحِ وَمَعَهُ سَخْلَةٌ تَيْعَرُ فَقَالَ مَا وَلَّدْتَ يَا فُلاَنُ قَالَ بَهْمَةً قَالَ فَاذْبَحْ لَنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً ثُمَّ قَالَ لاَ تَحْسِبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ أَنَّا مِنْ أَجْلِكَ ذَبَحْنَاهَا لَنَا غَنَمٌ مِائَةٌ لاَ نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَزِيدَ فَإِذَا وَلَّدَ الرَّاعِي بَهْمَةً ذَبَحْنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي امْرَأَةً وَإِنَّ فِي لِسَانِهَا شَيْئًا يَعْنِي الْبَذَاءَ قَالَ فَطَلِّقْهَا إِذًا قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لَهَا صُحْبَةً وَلِي مِنْهَا وَلَدٌ قَالَ فَمُرْهَا يَقُولُ عِظْهَا فَإِنْ يَكُ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ فَسَتَفْعَلُ وَلاَ تَضْرِبْ ظَعِينَتَكَ كَضَرْبِكَ أُمَيَّتَكَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ قَالَ أَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ وَخَلِّلْ بَيْنَ الأَصَابِعِ وَبَالِغْ فِي الاِسْتِنْشَاقِ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا  

[Machine] "He set out with his companion to visit the Prophet ﷺ but they could not find him. Aisha then provided them with dates and porridge. Soon after, the Prophet ﷺ arrived, disheveled and he asked if they had been fed. They replied in the affirmative. The Prophet ﷺ then asked them about prayer. He said, 'Perform your ablution properly, separate your fingers during washing, and when you rinse your nose, do so forcefully, except if you are fasting.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who is too brief in her garment.' He said, 'Divorce her.' I said, 'She has companions and children.' He said, 'Advise her, and if there is any good in her, she will adhere to it. And do not beat your wife as you would beat your slave.' While we were discussing, a shepherd came and pushed his flock towards us. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Did you give birth?' He replied, 'Yes.' The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'What did you get?' He said, 'A male.' The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'What kind?' The shepherd said, 'A healthy one.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Slaughter a sheep in its place.' Then he approached me and said, 'Do not assume that I did not say 'do not assume.' We slaughtered it for your sake, and we have a hundred sheep which we do not want to multiply.' When the shepherd gave birth to another healthy sheep, he ordered us to slaughter it in its place."  

أَنَّهُ انْطَلَقَ هُوَ وَصَاحِبٌ لَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَجِدَاهُ فَأَطْعَمَتْهُمَا عَائِشَةُ تَمْرًا وَعَصِيدَةً فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ أَنْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتَقَلَّعُ يَتَكَفَّأُ فَقَالَ أَطْعَمْتِهِمَا؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ؟ قَالَ أَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ وَخَلِّلِ الْأَصَابِعَ وَإِذَا اسْتَنْشَقْتَ فَأَبْلِغْ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ لِي امْرَأَةٌ فَذَكَرَ مِنْ بَذَائِهَا قَالَ طَلِّقْهَا قُلْتُ إِنَّ لَهَا صُحْبَةً وَوَلَدًا قَالَ مُرْهَا أَوْ قُلْ لَهَا فَإِنْ يَكُنْ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ فَسَتَفْعَلْ وَلَا تَضْرِبْ ظَعِينَتَكَ ضَرْبَكَ أُمَيَّتَكَ فَبَيْنَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِي الْغَنَمَ فِي الْمُرَاحِ عَلَى يَدِهِسَخْلَةٌ فَقَالَ أَوَلَّدْتَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ بَهْمَةً قَالَ اذْبَحْ مَكَانَهَا شَاةً ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا يَحْسَبَنَّ أَنَّمَا ذَبَحْنَاهَا مِنْ أَجْلِكَ لَنَا غَنَمٌ مِائَةٌ لَا نُحِبُّ أَنْ تَزِيدَ عَلَيْهَا فَإِذَا وَلَّدَ الرَّاعِي بَهْمَةً أَمَرْنَا فَذَبَحَ مَكَانَهَا شَاةً  

[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ with a companion of mine but we did not find him. Aisha then fed us dates and porridge. Then, the Prophet ﷺ came, dragging his foot and tying his lower garment. He asked, "Did you feed them anything?" We said, "Yes." He said, "While we were like that, a shepherd came by with a sheep. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Did she give birth?" He said, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did she deliver?" He replied, "A healthy lamb." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Slaughter a sheep instead of her." Then, he turned to me and said, "Do not think that we slaughtered her only for your sake. We have a hundred sheep, and we do not want them to increase. So, whenever a shepherd is burdened with the sheep, we slaughter a sheep in its place." Ibn Juraij said, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Do not think' and did not say, 'Do not assume.'" This was narrated by Sufyan Ath-Thawri from Abu Hashim from Asim bin Laqit, but Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.  

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَأَطْعَمَتْنَا عَائِشَةُ تَمْرًا وَعَصِيدَةً وَقَالَ فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ أَنْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتَقَلَّعُ وَيَتَكَفَّأُ قَالَ «أَطَعِمْتُمَا شَيْئًا؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ جَاءَ الرَّاعِي وَعَلَى يَدِهِ سَخْلَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَوَلَدَتْ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «مَاذَا؟» قَالَ بَهْمَةٌ قَالَ «اذْبَحْ مَكَانَهَا شَاةً» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ «لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ أَنَّا إِنَّمَا ذَبَحْنَاهَا مِنْ أَجَلِكَ لَنَا غَنَمٌ مِائَةٌ لَا نُحِبُّ أَنْ تَزِيدَ فَإِذَا حَمَلَ الرَّاعِي ذَبَحْنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً» قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ» وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا يَحْسَبَنَّ رَوَاهُ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ لَقِيطٍ بِهَذِهِ الرِّوَايَةِ سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

كُنْتُ وَافِدَ بَنِي الْمُنْتَفِقِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ نُصَادِفْهُ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ وَصَادَفْنَا عَائِشَةَ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَأَمَرَتْ لَنَا بِحَرِيرَةٍ فَصَنَعَتْ لَنَا وَأُتِينَا بِقِنَاعٍ وَالْقِنَاعُ الطَّبَقُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «هَلْ أَصَبْتُمْ شَيْئًا أَوْ آمُرُ لَكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ؟» فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ جُلُوسٌ قَالَ فَرَفَعَ الرَّاعِي غَنَمَهُ إِلَى الْمُرَاحِ وَمَعَهُ سَخْلَةٌ يَنْفِرُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا وَلَدَتْ يَا فُلَانُ» ؟ قَالَ بَهْمَةً قَالَ «فَاذْبَحْ لَنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا يُحْسَبَنَّ أَنَّا مِنْ أَجْلِكُمْ ذَبَحْنَاهَا لَنَا غَنْمُ مِائَةٍ وَلَا نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَزِيدَ فَإِذَا وَلَّدَ الرَّاعِي بَهْمَةً ذَبَحْنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً» قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي امْرَأَةً فَذَكَرَ مِنْ طُولِ لِسَانِهَا وَبَذَائِهَا فَقَالَ «طَلِّقْهَا» فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ لِي مِنْهَا وَلَدًا قَالَ «فَمُرْهَا يَقُولُ عِظْهَا فَإِنْ يَكُ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ فَسَتَفْعَلْ وَلَا تَضْرِبْ ظَعِينَتَكَ كَضَرْبِكَ أَمَتِكَ» قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْوضُوءِ قَالَ «أَسْبِغْ الْوضُوءَ وَخَلِّلِ الْأَصَابِعَ وَبَالِغْ فِي الِاسْتِنْشَاقِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا»  

[Machine] I was in the delegation of Banu Al-Muntafiq. While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a shepherd raised his flock of sheep to the pasture. Suddenly, one of them ran away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What did it give birth to?" The shepherd replied, "A healthy lamb." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Slaughter a sheep in its place." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not think that it is due to shortage or that it is an obligation for us to slaughter it. We slaughter a sheep in its place every time the shepherd gives birth to a healthy lamb." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who uses bad words." He said, "Then divorce her." I said, "But she is my companion, and I have children with her." He said, "Advise her with kind words, perhaps she will understand, and do not harm her like she harms you." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution." He said, "When you perform ablution, perform it thoroughly, separate your fingers, and sniff water well unless you are fasting."  

كُنْتُ فِي وَفْدِ بَنِي الْمُنْتَفِقِ فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ رَفَعَ الرَّاعِي غَنَمَهُ إِلَى الْمُرَاحِ فَإِذَا سَخْلَةً تَيْعَرُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَاذَا وَلَدَتْ؟ » فَقَالَ الرَّاعِي بَهْمَةٌ فَقَالَ «اذْبَحْ مَكَانَهَا شَاةً» ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا تَحْسِبَنَّ بِالْخَفْضِ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ بِالنَّصْبِ أَنَّا مِنْ أَجْلِكَ ذَبَحْنَاهَا إِنَّ لَنَا غَنَمًا مِئَةٌ فَإِذَا وَلَدَ الرَّاعِي بَهْمَةً ذَبَحْنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً» قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي امْرَأَةً وَفِي لِسَانِهَا شَيْءٌ يَعْنِي الْبَذَاءَ قَالَ «طَلِّقْهَا إِذًا» فَقَالَ إِنَّ لَهَا صُحْبَةً وَلِي مِنْهَا وَلَدٌ قَالَ «فَمُرْهَا بِقَوْلٍ فَعِظْهَا لَعَلَّهَا أَنْ تَعْقِلَ وَلَا تَضْرِبْ ظَعِينَتَكَ كَضَرْبِكَ إِبِلَكَ» قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنِي عَنِ الْوضُوءِ قَالَ «إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ فَأَسْبِغِ الْوضُوءَ وَخَلِّلْ بَيْنَ الْأَصَابِعِ وَبَالِغْ فِي الِاسْتِنْشَاقِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا»  

[Machine] I set off with my friend until we reached the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , but we did not find him. Aishah fed us dates and served us a dish. When the Prophet, ﷺ , came, he plucked a young date palm and said, "Did you feed them anything?" We replied, "Yes." While we were still discussing this, a shepherd brought a sheep to the entrance of the mosque and said, "Has she given birth?" They answered, "Yes." He said, "Then slaughter a sheep." He then approached us and said, "Don't think, and by that I mean don't think, that we slaughtered the sheep for you. We have a hundred sheep, and we don't want them to increase in number when the shepherd gives birth. We commanded him, so he slaughtered a sheep."  

انْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَأَطْعَمَتْنَا عَائِشَةُ تَمْرًا وَعَصَدَتْ لَنَا عَصِيدَةً إِذْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَنْقَلِعُ فَقَالَ «هَلْ أَطْعَمْتِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِي الْغَنَمَ إِلَى الْمُرَاحِ عَلَى يَدِهِ سَخْلَةٌ فَقَالَ «هَلْ وَلَدَتْ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَاذْبَحْ شَاةً» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا تَحْسَبُنَّ أَنَّا ذَبَحْنَا الشَّاةَ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمَا لَنَا غَنْمٌ مِائَةٌ لَا نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَزِيدَ عَلَيْهَا إِذَا وُلِدَ لِلرَّاعِي بَهْمَةٌ أَمَرْنَاهُ فَذَبَحَ شَاةً

While we were still on that, a shepherd brought a sheep to the shepherd's place by his hand. He said, "Has she given birth?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet, ﷺ , said, "Then slaughter a sheep." Then he approached us with his face and said, "Do not think that we slaughtered the sheep for your sake, as we have a hundred sheep and we do not want to increase them if the shepherd gives birth to them."  

انْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَأَطْعَمَتْنَا عَائِشَةُ تَمْرًا وَعَصَدَتْ لَنَا عَصِيدَةً إِذْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَنْقَلِعُ فَقَالَ «هَلْ أَطْعَمْتِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِي الْغَنَمَ إِلَى الْمُرَاحِ عَلَى يَدِهِ سَخْلَةٌ فَقَالَ «هَلْ وَلَدَتْ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَاذْبَحْ شَاةً» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا تَحْسَبُنَّ أَنَّا ذَبَحْنَا الشَّاةَ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمَا لَنَا غَنْمٌ مِائَةٌ لَا نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَزِيدَ عَلَيْهَا إِذَا وُلِدَ لِلرَّاعِي بَهْمَةٌ أَمَرْنَاهُ فَذَبَحَ شَاةً

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived, he uprooted a plant and asked, "Did you feed them anything?" We replied, "Yes." While we were discussing this, a shepherd brought a ewe and the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Has it given birth?" The shepherd replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then sacrifice a sheep." He then turned to us and said, "Do not think that we sacrificed the sheep for your sake. We have a hundred sheep, and we don't want to increase them when the shepherd gives birth." So he commanded the shepherd, and he sacrificed a sheep.  

انْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَأَطْعَمَتْنَا عَائِشَةُ تَمْرًا وَعَصَدَتْ لَنَا عَصِيدَةً إِذْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَنْقَلِعُ فَقَالَ «هَلْ أَطْعَمْتِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِي الْغَنَمَ إِلَى الْمُرَاحِ عَلَى يَدِهِ سَخْلَةٌ فَقَالَ «هَلْ وَلَدَتْ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَاذْبَحْ شَاةً» ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا تَحْسَبُنَّ أَنَّا ذَبَحْنَا الشَّاةَ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمَا لَنَا غَنْمٌ مِائَةٌ لَا نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَزِيدَ عَلَيْهَا إِذَا وُلِدَ لِلرَّاعِي بَهْمَةٌ أَمَرْنَاهُ فَذَبَحَ شَاةً  

I was the leader of the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq or (the narrator doubted) I was among the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq that came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we reached the Prophet, we did not find him in his house. We found there Aisha, the Mother of the Believers. She ordered that a dish called Khazirah should be prepared for us. It was then prepared. A tray containing dates was then presented to us. (The narrator Qutaybah did not mention the word qina', tray). Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came. He asked: Has anything been served to you or ordered for you? We replied: Yes, Messenger of Allah. While we were sitting in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we suddenly saw that a shepherd was driving a herd of sheep to their fold. He had with him a newly-born lamb that was crying. He (the Prophet) asked him: What did it bear, O so and so? He replied: A ewe. He then said: Slaughter for us in its place a sheep. Do not think that we are slaughtering it for you. We have one hundred sheep and we do not want their number to increase. Whenever a ewe is born, we slaughter a sheep in its place. (The narrator says that the Prophet ﷺ used the word la tahsabanna, do not think). I (the narrator Laqit) then said: Messenger of Allah, I have a wife who has something (wrong) in her tongue, i.e. she is insolent. He said: Then divorce her. I said: Messenger of Allah, she had company with me and I have children from her. He said: Then ask her (to obey you). If there is something good in her, she will do so (obey); and do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl. I said: Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution. He said: Perform ablution in full and make the fingers go through the beard and snuff with water well except when you are fasting. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 142)   

كُنْتُ وَفْدَ بَنِي الْمُنْتَفِقِ أَوْ فِي وَفْدِ بَنِي الْمُنْتَفِقِ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ فَلَمْ نُصَادِفْهُ وَصَادَفْنَا عَائِشَةَ ؓ فَأُتِينَا بِقِنَاعٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٍ وَالْقِنَاعُ الطَّبَقُ وَأَمَرَتْ لَنَا بِخَزِيرَةٍ فَصُنِعَتْ ثُمَّ أَكَلْنَا فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ أَنْ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلْ أَكَلْتُمْ شَيْئًا هَلْ أُمِرَ لَكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ أَنْ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِي غَنَمَهُ فَإِذَا بِسَخْلَةٍ تَيْعَرُ فَقَالَ هِيهِ يَا فُلَانُ مَا وَلَدَتْ قَالَ بَهْمَةً قَالَ فَاذْبَحْ لَنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً ثُمَّ انْحَرَفَ إِلِيَّ وَقَالَ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ أَنَّا مِنْ أَجْلِكَ ذَبَحْنَاهَا لَنَا غَنَمٌ مِائَةٌ لَا نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَزِيدَ فَإِذَا وَلَدَ الرَّاعِي بَهْمَةً ذَبَحْنَا مَكَانَهَا شَاةً قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ لِيَ امْرَأَةً فِي لِسَانِهَا شَيْءٌ يَعْنِي الْبَذَاءَ قَالَ طَلِّقْهَا قُلْتُ إِنَّ لِي مِنْهَا وَلَدًا وَلَهَا صُحْبَةٌ قَالَ فَمُرْهَا يَقُولُ عِظْهَا فَإِنْ يَكُ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ فَسَتَقْبَلْ وَلَا تَضْرِبْنَ ظَعِينَتَكَ ضَرْبَكَ أُمَيَّتَكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ قَالَ أَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ وَخَلِّلْ بَيْنَ الْأَصَابِعِ وَبَالِغْ فِي الِاسْتِنْشَاقِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا  

" انْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَأَصْحَاب لِى حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَلَمْ نَجِدْهُ فَأطَعَمتْنا عَائشَة تَمْرًا، وعَصَّدتْ لَنَا عَصِيدَة إِذْ جَاءَ رَسُول الله ﷺ يَتَقَلَّعُ، قَالَ هَلْ أَطْعَمتكُم مِن شَىْءٍ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَم، فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ دَفَعَ الرَّاعِى الْغَنَمَ فِي الْمُراح عَلَى يَدهِ سَخْلَة قَالَ: هَلْ وَلدت؟ قَالَ: نَعَم، قَالَ: فَاذْبَح لَهُم شَاةً، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَال لا تَحْسَبَن وَلَمْ يَقُل لَا تَحسِبن أنَّا ذَبَحْنَا الشَّاةَ مِنْ أَجْلِكُم، لَنَا غَنَمٌ مِائة لا نُرِيدُ أَنْ نَزِيدَ إِذَا وَلَّد الرَّاعِى لَنَا بَهِيمة أَمَرْنَاهُ فذَبَحَ شَاةً، قُلْتُ يَا رَسُول الله: أَخْبِرنِى عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ، قَالَ: إِذَا تَوَضَّأَت، فَأَسْبِغ وَخَلِّل بَيْن الأَصَابِعِ، فَإذَا اسْتَنْثَرتَ فَأَبْلغ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ صَائِمًا، قُلْتُ يَا رَسُول الله: إِنَّ لِى امْرَأَة فَذَكَر مِنْ طُولِ لِسَانِهَا وَبَذَائيها، فَقَالَ طَلَّقْهَا، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُول الله إنَّها ذَات صحْبَةٍ وَوَلَدٍ، قَالَ: فأمْسِكْها فَإنْ يَكُ فِيهَا خَيرٌ فَسَتَفْعَل، وَلَا تَضْرِب ظَعِينَتَكَ ضَرْبك أَمَتكَ".
