Then, they approached Umar and asked for permission to see him, but he also did not grant them permission. After that, they sought permission again and were granted permission. They found him between his two wives, and Umar said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, the daughter of Zaid asked me for financial support, so I approached her or something like that, and he intended to make him laugh. So, he laughed until his teeth were visible and said, 'By the One in Whose hand is my soul, nothing kept me away except this.' So, they both stood up and took him by their hands, and they said, 'Do you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something he does not have?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited them from doing so, and they said, 'We will not return.' At that point, the Revelation of choice descended."

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the battle of Dhāt al-Riqā‘. A woman from the polytheists was injured, so when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed with the caravan, her husband came and he was absent. He swore that he would not cease until he shed blood among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ . He went out following the traces of the Prophet ﷺ , and the Prophet ﷺ settled in a house. He asked, "Who is guarding us tonight?" A man from the Muhājirīn and a man from the Anṣār responded saying, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then be at the mouth of the valley." They descended to the valley and when the two men reached the mouth of the valley, the Ansārī said to the Muhājirī, "Which part of the night do you prefer that I relieve you?" The beginning or the end? He replied, "Relieve me at the beginning." So the Muhājirī laid down to sleep, and the Ansārī stood to pray. Then the man came, and when he saw the Muhājirī, he knew that he was their guard, so he shot an arrow at him. The Muhājirī put the arrow back into him, and remained standing strong. Then the man shot another arrow, and the Muhājirī pushed it back into him and remained standing strong. He returned to him with a third arrow, and the Muhājirī put it back into him and remained standing strong. Then he performed the rukū‘ (bowing) and sujūd (prostration), and beckoned for his companion. He said, "Sit down, for you have been given (the opportunity)." He jumped up, and when the man saw the two of them, he knew that they had vowed to fight him, so he ran away. The Muhājirī looked at the blood on the Ansārī and said, "Glory be to Allah! Didn't you wake me up?" He replied, "I was reciting a verse in the Qur'an and I did not want to cut it off until I completed it." When the shooting began, I performed the rukū‘, and I saw you. I swear by Allah, if it were not for my duty to protect you commanded by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , my life would have been lost before I cut off their hands or destroyed them.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us the supplication for isthikharah (seeking what us beneficial from Allah) as he would teach us a surah (chapter) from the Qur'an. He would tell us: When one of you intends to do a work, he should offer two supererogatory rak'ahs of prayer, and then say (at the end of the prayer):

"O Allah, I seek Your choice on the better (of the two matters) based upon Your knowledge, and I seek Your decree based upon Your power, and I ask You for Your great bounties. For Indeed, You are the One Who Decrees, and I do not decree, and You know, and I do not know, and You are the Knower of the Unseen. O Allah, if you know this, and You are the Knower of the Unseen. O Allah, if you know this - here he should name exactly what he wishes - is better for me with regard to my religion, and my life, and my afterlife, and the end result of my affairs, then decree it to me, and make it easy for me, and bless me on it. O Allah, and if You know this to be evil for me - and he says just as he said the first time - then avert it for me, and avert me from it. And decree for me good wherever it might be, the make me content with it." A version goes: "If the work is good immediately or subsequently." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1538)
