[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say regarding the battle of Tabuk, after we returned, "Indeed, there are people in Madinah whom you have not traveled any distance or descended into any valley except that they were with you. Illness has kept them back."  

أحمد:١٤٦٧٥حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ بَعْدَ أَنْ رَجَعْنَا إِنَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ لَأَقْوَامًا مَا سِرْتُمْ مَسِيرًا وَلَا هَبَطْتُمْ وَادِيًا إِلَّا وَهُمْ مَعَكُمْ حَبَسَهُمُ الْمَرَضُ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the Ghazwa of Tabuk, and when he approached Medina, he said, "There are some people in Medina who were with you all the time, you did not travel any portion of the journey nor crossed any valley, but they were with you they (i.e. the people) said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Even though they were at Medina?" He said, "Yes, because they were stopped by a genuine excuse."  

البخاري:٤٤٢٣حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجَعَ مِنْ غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَدَنَا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَقْوَامًا مَا سِرْتُمْ مَسِيرًا وَلاَ قَطَعْتُمْ وَادِيًا إِلاَّ كَانُوا مَعَكُمْ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَهُمْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ وَهُمْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ حَبَسَهُمُ الْعُذْرُ  

If one intends to do good but is unable, he is counted among the ones able to do it in spirit

We were with the Prophet ﷺ on an expedition. He said: There are some people in Medina. They are with you whenever you cover a distance or cross a valley. They have been detained by illness.  

مسلم:١٩١١aحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي غَزَاةٍ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ لَرِجَالاً مَا سِرْتُمْ مَسِيرًا وَلاَ قَطَعْتُمْ وَادِيًا إِلاَّ كَانُوا مَعَكُمْ۔ حَبَسَهُمُ الْمَرَضُ۔»
