A man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ died on the day of Khaybar. They mentioned the matter to the Messenger of Allah. He said: Offer prayer over your companion. When the faces of the people looked perplexed, he said: Your companion misappropriated booty in the path of Allah. We searched his belongings and found some Jewish beads not worth two dirhams.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ تُوُفِّيَ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَتَغَيَّرَتْ وُجُوهُ النَّاسِ لِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ غَلَّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَفَتَّشْنَا مَتَاعَهُ فَوَجَدْنَا خَرَزًا مِنْ خَرَزِ يَهُودَ لاَ يُسَاوِي دِرْهَمَيْنِ

“A man from (the tribe of) Ashja’ died in Khaibar, and the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Offer the funeral prayer for your companion.’ The people found that strange.* When he saw that, he said: ‘Your companion stole from the spoils of war (when fighting) in the cause of Allah.’”

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَأَنْكَرَ النَّاسُ ذَلِكَ وَتَغَيَّرَتْ لَهُ وُجُوهُهُمْ فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ قَالَ إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ غَلَّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ زَيْدٌ فَالْتَمَسُوا فِي مَتَاعِهِ فَإِذَا خَرَزَاتٌ مِنْ خَرَزِ يَهُودَ مَا تُسَاوِي دِرْهَمَيْنِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban from Ibn Abi Amra that Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani said, "A man died on the day of Hunayn, and they mentioned him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Zayd claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You pray over your companion." (i.e. he would not pray himself). The people's faces dropped at that. Zayd claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Your companion stole from the spoils taken in the way of Allah." Zayd said, "So we opened up his baggage and found some Jews' beads worth about two dirhams."

قَالَ تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ وَإِنَّهُمْ ذَكَرُوهُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَزَعَمَ زَيْدٌ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ فَتَغَيَّرَتْ وُجُوهُ النَّاسِ لِذَلِكَ فَزَعَمَ زَيْدٌ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ قَدْ غَلَّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَفَتَحْنَا مَتَاعَهُ فَوَجَدْنَا خَرَزَاتٍ مِنْ خَرَزِ يَهُودَ مَا تُسَاوِينَ دِرْهَمَيْنِ

[Machine] "And it was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Pray upon your companion." He said, "So the faces of the people changed because of that." So when he saw what they had, he said, "Indeed, your companion was engaged in Jihad for the sake of Allah." So we searched his belongings, and we found in it a necklace made of Jewish beads worth two dirhams."

وَأَنَّهُ ذُكِرَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ قَالَ فَتَغَيَّرَتْ وُجُوهُ الْقَوْمِ لِذَلِكَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى الَّذِي بِهِمْ قَالَ إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ غَلَّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَفَتَّشْنَا مَتَاعَهُ فَوَجَدْنَا فِيهِ خَرَزًا مِنْ خَرَزِ الْيَهُودِ مَا يُسَاوِي دِرْهَمَيْنِ

[Machine] A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, who was one of the bravest. They mentioned him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Pray for your companion, for he strove in the cause of Allah." They searched his belongings and found a Jewish necklace worth two dirhams.

تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَشْجَعَ فَذَكَرُوهُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبَكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ غَلَّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» فَفَتَّشُوا مَتَاعَهُ فَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ خَرَزًا مِنْ خَرَزِ يَهُودٍ مَا يُسَاوِي دِرْهَمَيْنِ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ تُوُفِّيَ بِخَيْبَرَ فَذَكَرَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ» فَتَغَيَّرَتْ وُجُوهُ الْقَوْمِ لِذَلِكَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى الَّذِي بِهِمْ قَالَ «إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ غَلَّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» فَفَتَّشْنَا مَتَاعَهُ فَوَجَدْنَا خَرَزًا مِنْ خَرَزِ الْيَهُودِ مَا يُسَاوِي دِرْهَمَيْنِ

[Machine] He said that a man passed away on the day of Khaybar, and they mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said to them, "Pray for your companion." Then the faces of the people changed due to this. He presumed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, "Indeed, your companion has strived in the way of Allah, so we opened his belongings and found beads of the Jews that are not worth two dirhams," the words of the narrator Ibn Wahb.
