عَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، عَنْ وَاثِلَةَ

tabarani:18490Ibrāhīm b. Duḥaym al-Dimashqī from my father > Muḥammad b. Shuʿayb b. Shābūr > Yaḥyá b. Abū ʿAmr al-Saybānī > ʿAmr b. ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥaḍramī > Wāthilah b. al-Asqaʿ

[Machine] I went as an emigrant to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . When people entered from the outside, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , would not see anyone sitting without coming closer to them and asking, "Do you have a need?" He started with the first row, then the second, then the third, until he came to me and said, "Do you have a need?" I said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah." He asked, "What is your need?" I said, "Islam." He said, "It is good for you." He asked, "Are you emigrating?" I said, "Yes." He said, "The emigration of the desert or the emigration of the city?" I asked, "Which one is better?" He said, "The emigration of the city is to stay with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and the emigration of the desert is to return to your tribe and obey and follow the instructions, whether it is easy or difficult for you." I said, "I pledge allegiance to you." He said, "Make it to the best of your ability." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , called during the Battle of Tabuk, and I went to my family. I found my father sitting in the sun, contemplating it. I greeted him with the greeting of Islam, and he asked, "Did you embrace Islam?" I said, "Yes, I did." He said, "May Allah make it good for you and us." I accepted that from him. While I was with him, my sister came to greet me. I said, "O my sister, provide me with the provisions that a woman gives to her brother who is going for Jihad." She came to me with dough in a bucket, and the bucket was in a sack. I started calling out, "Who will carry a man's weapon?" An elder from the Ansar responded and said, "His weapon is on the condition that we carry it behind him, and his food is with us." I said, "Yes, go forth with the blessings of Allah." I went with a good companion, who loaded me with what I requested and provided me with food, in addition to what he ate himself, until Allah granted us victory. I was affected by heatstrokes, so I drank from them until I came to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , while he was in his tent. I called him, and he came out and sat on a bag of his camel's goods. Then he said, "Give them to me turned away." So I gave them to him turned away. Then he said, "Give them to me facing me." So I gave them to him facing him. Then he said, "I don't see your heatstrokes except as honorable." I said, "Indeed, it is your spoils of war that I conditioned for you." He said, "Take your heatstrokes, O son of my brother, but we wanted something other than your weapon."

Abu Bakr came to my father who was at home and purchased a saddle from him. He said to ʿAzib. "Tell your son to carry it with me." So I carried it with him and my father followed us so as to take the price (of the saddle). My father said, "O Abu Bakr! Tell me what happened to you on your night journey with Messenger of Allah ﷺ (during Migration)." He said, "Yes, we travelled the whole night and also the next day till midday. when nobody could be seen on the way ( because of the severe heat) . Then there appeared a long rock having shade beneath it, and the sunshine had not come to it yet. So we dismounted there and I levelled a place and covered it with an animal hide or dry grass for the Prophet ﷺ to sleep on (for a while). I then said, 'Sleep, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I will guard you.' So he slept and I went out to guard him. Suddenly I saw a shepherd coming with his sheep to that rock with the same intention we had when we came to it. I asked (him). 'To whom do you belong, O boy?' He replied, 'I belong to a man from Medina or Mecca.' I said, 'Do your sheep have milk?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Will you milk for us?' He said, 'Yes.' He caught hold of a sheep and I asked him to clean its teat from dust, hairs and dirt. (The sub-narrator said that he saw Al-Bara' striking one of his hands with the other, demonstrating how the shepherd removed the dust.) The shepherd milked a little milk in a wooden container and I had a leather container which I carried for the Prophet ﷺ to drink and perform the ablution from. I went to the Prophet, hating to wake him up, but when I reached there, the Prophet ﷺ had already awakened; so I poured water over the middle part of the milk container, till the milk was cold. Then I said, 'Drink, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!' He drank till I was pleased. Then he asked, 'Has the time for our departure come?' I said, 'Yes.' So we departed after midday. Suraqa bin Malik followed us and I said, 'We have been discovered, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!' He said, Don't grieve for Allah is with us.' The Prophet ﷺ invoked evil on him (i.e. Suraqa) and so the legs of his horse sank into the earth up to its belly. (The subnarrator, Zuhair is not sure whether Abu Bakr said, "(It sank) into solid earth.") Suraqa said, 'I see that you have invoked evil on me. Please invoke good on me, and by Allah, I will cause those who are seeking after you to return.' The Prophet ﷺ invoked good on him and he was saved. Then, whenever he met somebody on the way, he would say, 'I have looked for him here in vain.' So he caused whomever he met to return. Thus Suraqa fulfilled his promise."

Send your son to my residence (to carry this haudaj), and my father said to me: Carry it (for him). So I carried it and there went along with him (with Abu Bakr) my father in order to fetch its price and he ('Azib) said to Abu Bakr: Abu Bakr, narrate to me what you both did on the night when you set out on a journey along with Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: We set out during the night and went on walking until it was noon, and the path was vacant and so none passed by that (until) there appeared prominently before us a large rock. It had its shade and the rays of the sun did not reach that place. So we got down at that place. I then went to the rock and levelled the ground with my hands at the place where the Prophet ﷺ would take rest under its shade. I then set the bedding and said: Messenger of Allah, go to sleep and I shall keep a watch around you. I went out and watched around him. There we saw a shepherd moving towards that rock with his flock and he intended what we intended (i. e. taking rest). I met him and said to him: Young boy, to which place do you belong? He said: I am a person from Medina. I said, is there any milk in the udders of your sheep and goats? He said: Yes. He took hold of a goat, and I said to him: Clean the udder well so that it should be free from hair, dust and impurity. I saw al-Bara' striking his hand upon the other (to give an indication) how he did that. He milked the goat for me in a wooden cup which he had with him and I had with me a bucket in which I kept water for drinking and for performing ablution. I came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and did not like to awaken him from sleep but he was accidentally startled from the sleep. I poured water upon the milk (till It was cold) and I said: Messenger of Allah, take this milk. He then took It and I was delighted and he (the Holy Prophet) said: Is now not the time to march on? I said: Of course. So he marched on after the sun had passed the meridian and Suraqa b. Malik pursued us and we had been walking on soft, level ground. I said: Messenger of Allah, we are about to be overtaken by them. Thereupon he said: Be not grieved. Verily, Allah is with us. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed him and his horse sank into the earth. I think he also said: I know you have hurled curse upon me. So supplicate Allah for me and I take an oath that I shall turn everyone away who would come in search of you. So he (Messenger of Allah) supplicated Allah and he was rescued and he came back and to everyone he met, he said: I have combed all this side. In short, he diverted everyone whom he met and he in fact fulfilled his promise.

"I went to the Prophet ﷺ while he was sitting in the Masjid, the people said: 'This is 'Adi bin Hatim.' And I came without having a treaty nor a writ. When I was brought to him, he took my hand. Prior to that he had said: 'I hope that Allah will place his hand in my hand.'" He said: "He stood with me, and a woman and a boy met him and said: 'We have a need from you.' He stood with them, until he was finished dealing with what they wanted. Then he took me by the hand until he brought me to his house. A slave girl brought him a cushion to sit on, and I sat in front of him. He expressed thanks and praise for Allah then said: 'What has caused you to flee from saying La Ilaha Illallah? Do you know of another god other than Him?'" He said: "I said: 'No.'" He said: "Then he talked for some time, and then said: 'You refuse to say Allahu Akbar because you know that there is something greater than Allah?'" He said: "I said: 'No.' He said: 'Indeed the Jews are those who Allah is wrath with, and the Christians have strayed.'" He said: "I said: 'Indeed I am a Muslim, Hanif.'" He said: "I saw his face smiling with happiness." He said: "Then he ordered that I stop with him at the home of a man from the Ansar, whom he would frequently visit in the mornings and the evenings. When I was with him at night, a people in woolen garments of these Nimar (a cloth with certain patters, and the word appeared before) came. Then he performed Salat and stood to encourage them (the people) to give (charity) to them. Then he said: 'Even with a Sa' or half a Sa', or a handful or part of a handful, to save the face of one of you from the heat of Hell, or the Fire. And even if it be by a date or a part of a date - for indeed one of you shall meet Allah and it shall be said to him what I say to you: "Have I not given hearing and seeing to you?" He shall say: "Of course." It will be said: "Have I not given you wealth and children?" He shall say: "Of course." It will be said: "So where is what you have sent forth for yourself?" He will look before him and behind him, on his right and on his left, but he shall not find anything to protect his face from the heat of Hell. Let one of you protect his face from the Fire, even if with part of a date, and if he does not find that, then with a good statement. For indeed I do not fear poverty for you - Allah will aid you and grant you, such that a woman can travel on her camel howda from Yathrib to Al-Hirah, or further, without fear of being robbed.' I began thinking to myself: "Where would the thieves of Taiy' be then?"'

[Machine] When my affairs were mentioned and I was not aware of it, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and gave a sermon about me. He praised and thanked Allah (glory be to Him) for what He has bestowed upon me, then he said, "As for what comes after, inform the people that they have slandered my family and, by Allah, I have never known anything bad about them. They built my family and, by Allah, I have never known anything bad about them, nor has anyone ever entered my house without my presence. I have never been absent during any journey without them being with me." Then Sa'd bin Mu'adh stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall we strike their necks?" A man from the Bani Khazraj stood up, and Umm Hassaan bin Thabit, who was the wife of that man, said, "You lie! By Allah, if they were from the Aws, you would not want to strike their necks until there was fighting between the Aws and the Khazraj within the Masjid, and I do not know anything about them." When it was evening that day, I went out for some need, and Umm Misbah was with me. She stumbled, and she said, "May Misbah be ruined!" I said, "Why do you curse your son?" She remained silent. Then she stumbled again and said, "May Misbah be ruined!" I said, "Why do you curse your son?" Then she stumbled a third time and said, "May Misbah be ruined!" I scolded her and said, "Why do you curse your son?" She said, "By Allah, I only curse him because of you." I asked, "In what matter concerning me?" Then she informed me about the story. I said, "Did my father know about it?" She said, "Yes." I asked, "And the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "And the Messenger of Allah." I became overwhelmed and started crying. Abu Bakr heard my voice while he was on the roof reciting the Qur'an. He came down and said to my mother, "What's wrong with her?" She told him what had happened. He said, "I swear to you, O daughter, that if you had not returned to your house, I would have divorced her." So I went back to my house and my parents were with me. They stayed with me until after Asr prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me. My parents were on my right and left side. The Prophet ﷺ said the Shahada (testimony of faith) and praised and thanked Allah (glory be to Him) for what He has bestowed upon him. Then he said, "O Aisha, if you have committed a mistake or wronged, repent to Allah (glory be to Him). Verily, Allah (glory be to Him) accepts repentance from His servants." Then a woman from the Ansar came and sat at the door. I said to myself, "Doesn't she have any shame?"

[Machine] From his father Rifaa'ah ibn Rafee', who witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ : He (the Prophet) and his cousin Mu'adh ibn 'Afra'ah went out until they reached Makkah. When they descended from Thaniyyah, they saw a man under a tree. The Prophet said, "Let us approach this man, so that we may entrust him with our belongings and make Tawaf around the Kaaba." We greeted him with the pre-Islamic form of greeting and he responded to us with the Islamic greeting. We had heard of the Prophet ﷺ , so we denied it and asked him, "Who are you?" He said, "Come down." We descended and said, "Where is the man who claims and says what he says?" He said, "I am him." So I said, "Present yourself to me." He presented Islam to us and said, "Who created the heavens, the earth, and the mountains?" We said, "Allah created them." He said, "Then who created you?" We said, "Allah created us." He said, "Then who created these idols that you worship?" We said, "We made them ourselves." He said, "The Creator is more deserving of worship than the created. You are more deserving of being worshiped, as you made them, but Allah is more deserving of being worshiped than something you made." I invite you to worship Allah alone, testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I am the Messenger of Allah. I also invite you to maintain kinship ties and refrain from oppression and transgression." We said, "By Allah, if what you are calling us to is false, then it would be among the noblest of matters and the best of characters." So we entrusted him with our belongings until we could go to the Kaaba. Mu'adh ibn 'Afra'ah sat with him and said, "I went to the Kaaba, performed Tawaf, and came out with seven cups. I gave him one of them and said, 'O Allah, if what Muhammad is calling to is true, then remove his cup seven times.'" He struck it seven times and each time, it emitted a sound. So I shouted, 'I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' People gathered around me saying, 'This man is insane, he struck the cup seven times and it still made a sound.' I said, 'No, by Allah, he is a believer.' Then I went up to a high place in Makkah, and when Mu'adh saw me, he said, 'Indeed, Rifaa'ah has come with a face that nothing has ever harmed before.' So I came to him, believed in him, and Allah's Messenger ﷺ taught us Surah Yusuf. We recited, "In the name of your Lord who created" until we reached the verse, "We will return to our family." When we were in 'Aqiq, Mu'adh said, 'I have never spent a night away from my family before, so let me stay here until morning.' So I spent the night with him and I had never done what I did before. Rifaa'ah would always present himself to his people after returning from a journey.

[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ wrote him a letter on red leather, and he patched his bucket with it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed, so he sent a military expedition, and they did not leave anyone or anything, not even the people or wealth, except they took it. He escaped naked on a horse and came to his daughter, who was married to Bani Hilal, and the assembly of the people was in the backyard of her house. He entered from behind the houses onto her. She said, "What is wrong with you?" He said, "All the evil that has come to your father, he has nothing left, not even people or wealth, except they took it." I said, "I have been invited to Islam, and she had already embraced Islam." He said, "So I threw a garment on him and he left." He came to him and there was a garment covering his head, it revealed his bottom, and when it covered his bottom, his head was uncovered. He said, "What do I see from you?" He said, "All the evil has befallen me." He repeated this to his daughter, and she said, "And I want Muhammad before my wealth is divided." He said, "Take my riding animal." He said, "I have no need for it, but give me the saddle." So he took it and went to the Prophet ﷺ when he was praying Fajr, and when he finished his prayer, he said, "Stretch out your hand, O Abu Ayub, so I may pledge allegiance to you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stretched out his hand, but when he intended to strike it with his hand, Abu Ayub withdrew his hand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did this repeatedly. Then he approached him and said, "Who are you?" He said, "I am a shepherd from the Sahimi tribe." So the Prophet ﷺ held his arm and lifted him from the ground and said, "Here is Abu Ayub. I wrote him a letter and he patched his bucket with it." Abu Ayub said, "About my wealth and children?" He said, "As for your wealth, it has been divided, but as for your children and family members, whoever you find among them." So he left and when he returned, his son recognized him. He then went back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "This is my son." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Bilal, "Go out with him, and if he claims he is his son, give him to him." So he went out with him and said, "This is my son," and he gave him to him. He returned to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "He mentioned that he is his son, and I did not see any of them hesitate to his companion." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is the ignorance of the Bedouins."

[Machine] He informed him that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left Mecca as a migrant to Medina, the Quraysh tribe made a reward of one hundred camels for whoever returned him. He said, "While I was sitting in my tribe's assembly, a man from us came and said, 'By Allah, I saw three individuals pass by hurriedly, and I think one of them is Muhammad.' I gestured to him to be silent and said, 'They are from the Banu Fulan, following some stray camels.' He said, 'Perhaps.' Then he fell silent. I stayed for a while and then got up and ordered my horse to be tied to the bottom of the valley. I removed my weapon from behind my room and put on my armor. Then I took my spear, which I use for oaths, and wore it. I called my people and said, 'The one I dislike has come out, but it will not harm him.' I hoped to capture him and take the one hundred camels. I rode on their trail, but as my horse picked up its pace, it stumbled and I fell off. I took out my spear and made an oath. The arrow that I dislike came out, so I was determined to follow him. I mounted my horse and when the people appeared before me, my horse stumbled again and his hands fell to the ground. I fell and he picked up his hands, which emitted smoke, like ashes. I realized that he had been prevented from me and that he was apparent. I called to them and said, 'Look at me, and by Allah, I do not suspect you or dislike anything in you.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Tell me, what do you seek?' I said, 'Write for me a document between me and you, as a sign.' He said, 'Write, O Abu Bakr.' So he wrote it for me and handed it to me. I returned and remained silent, not mentioning anything that happened until Allah granted victory to His Messenger in Mecca and after the conquest of Hunayn. I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the document he wrote for me. While I was going towards him, I passed by a group of Ansar soldiers. They shook their spears and said, 'To you, to you!' When I approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his camel, I looked at his legs tied to the saddle, and it seemed as if they were burning. I pushed my hand forward with the document and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is your document.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'On a day of fulfillment and good deeds, approach.'" So I converted.

I shouted to them and said, "Look at me, by Allah, I do not doubt you, and there is nothing from me that you despise." The Messenger of Allah said to him, "Tell him what he wants." So I said, "Write me a document between you and me." He said, "Write, O Abu Bakr." So he wrote it for me and threw it to me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the day of loyalty and righteousness." So I embraced Islam.
