“I used to guide my father after he lost his sight, and when I took him out for the Friday (prayer), when he heard the Adhan he would pray for forgiveness for Abu Umamah As’ad bin Zurarah, and supplicate for him. I heard that from him for a while, then I said to myself: ‘By Allah! What is this weakness? Every time he heard the Adhan for Friday (prayer) I hear him praying for forgiveness for Abu Umamah and supplicate for him, and I do not ask him about why he does that.’ Then I took him out for Friday (prayer), as I used to take him out, and when he heard the Adhan he prayed for forgiveness as he used to do. I said to him: ‘O my father! I see you supplicating for As’ad bin Zurarah every time you hear the call for Friday; why is that?’ He said: ‘O my son, he was the first one who led us for the Friday prayer before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came from Makkah, in Naqi’ Al- Khadamat (a place near Al-Madinah), in the plain of Harrah Banu Bayadah.’ I asked: ‘How many of you were there at that time?’ He said: ‘Forty men.’”  

كُنْتُ قَائِدَ أَبِي حِينَ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ وَكُنْتُ إِذَا خَرَجْتُ بِهِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ فَسَمِعَ الأَذَانَ اسْتَغْفَرَ لأَبِي أُمَامَةَ أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ وَدَعَا لَهُ فَمَكَثْتُ حِينًا أَسْمَعُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي وَاللَّهِ إِنَّ ذَا لَعَجْزٌ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُهُ كُلَّمَا سَمِعَ أَذَانَ الْجُمُعَةِ يَسْتَغْفِرُ لأَبِي أُمَامَةَ وَيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ وَلاَ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ لِمَ هُوَ؟ فَخَرَجْتُ بِهِ كَمَا كُنْتُ أَخْرُجُ بِهِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ الأَذَانَ اسْتَغْفَرَ كَمَا كَانَ يَفْعَلُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا أَبَتَاهُ أَرَأَيْتَكَ صَلاَتَكَ عَلَى أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ كُلَّمَا سَمِعْتَ النِّدَاءَ بِالْجُمُعَةِ لِمَ هُوَ؟ قَالَ أَىْ بُنَىَّ كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ صَلَّى بِنَا صَلاَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ مَقْدَمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ مَكَّةَ فِي نَقِيعِ الْخَضِمَاتِ فِي هَزْمٍ مِنْ حَرَّةِ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ قُلْتُ كَمْ كُنْتُمُ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ أَرْبَعِينَ رَجُلاً  

[Machine] He informed me that he said, "I was the leader after my father lost his sight. He could not hear the call to prayer on Fridays except that he said, 'May the mercy of Allah be upon As'ad ibn Zurara.' So I said after a while, 'If I ask my father what his situation is when he hears the call to prayer, he says, 'May the mercy of Allah be upon As'ad ibn Zurara.' So I said, 'Oh father, I am amazed by your prayer upon Abu Umamah every time you hear the call to prayer on Fridays.' He said, 'Oh my son, he was the first to gather us for Friday prayer in Madinah after the defeat of the Hawazim tribe of Bani Bayadah in the area known as Al-Khadimah.' I asked, 'And how many of you were there that day?' He said, 'Forty men.' Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summarized version."  

أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ قَائِدَ أَبِي بَعْدَمَا ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ فَكَانَ لَا يَسْمَعُ الْأَذَانَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَّا قَالَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ فَقُلْتُ بَعْدَ حِينٍ لَوْ سَأَلْتُ أَبِي مَا شَأْنُهُ إِذَا سَمِعَ الْأَذَانَ قَالَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ؟ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَتِ إِنَّهُ لَتُعْجِبُنِي صَلَاتُكَ عَلَى أَبِي أُمَامَةَ كُلَّمَا سَمِعْتَ الْأَذَانَ بِالْجُمُعَةِ قَالَ «أَيْ بُنَيَّ كَانَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ جَمَعَ لَنَا الْجُمُعَةَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي هَزْمٍ مِنْ حَرَّةِ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ فِي بَقِيعِ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْخَضِمَاتِ» قُلْتُ وَكَمْ أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ «أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص  

[Machine] I was the leader of my father when his eyesight deteriorated, so I went with him to the Friday prayer. When he heard the call to prayer, he prayed for Abu Umamah As'ad bin Zurarah and sought forgiveness for him. So I stayed for a long time without hearing the call to Friday prayer until he did that. So I said, "Oh father, do you see your seeking forgiveness for Abu Umamah every time you hear the call to Friday prayer?" He said, "O my son, he was the first one to gather with us in Madinah during the Battle of Khandaq from the tribe of Banu Bayadah, which is called Naqiyah Al-Khadamat." I said, "How many were you that day?" He said, "Forty men."  

كُنْتُ قَائِدَ أَبِي حِينَ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ إِذْ خَرَجْتُ بِهِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ فَسَمِعَ الْأَذَانَ صَلَّى عَلَى أَبِي أُمَامَةَ أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُ فَمَكَثْتُ كَثِيرًا لَا يَسْمَعُ أَذَانَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَّا فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبِي أَرَأَيْتَ اسْتِغْفَارَكَ لِأَبِي أُمَامَةَ كُلَّمَا سَمِعْتَ الْأَذَانَ لِلْجُمُعَةِ مَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ «أَيْ بُنَيُّ كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ جَمَّعَ بِنَا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي هَزْمِ النَّبْتِ مِنْ حَرَّةِ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ يُقَالُ لَهَا نَقِيعُ الْخَضَمَاتِ» قَالَ قُلْتُ كَمْ كُنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ «أَرْبَعِينَ رَجُلًا»  

[Machine] He informed me, saying, "I was the leader of my father after he lost his eyesight, and he could not hear the call to Friday prayer except that he would say, 'May the mercy of Allah be upon As'ad ibn Zurarah.' I said, 'O Father, it amazes me your prayer for my father Ummamah every time you hear the call to Friday prayer.' He said, 'Oh my son, he was the first one to gather the people for Friday prayer in the city of Harrah of Bani Bayadah in a place called Al-Khadamat. I said, 'And how many were you that day?' He said, 'Forty men.'"  

أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ «كُنْتُ قَائِدَ أَبِي بَعْدَمَا ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ وَكَانَ لَا يَسْمَعُ الْأَذَانَ بِالْجُمُعَةِ إِلَّا قَالَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا أَبَتِ إِنَّهُ لَتُعْجِبُنِي صَلَاتُكَ عَلَى أَبِي أُمَامَةَ كُلَّمَا سَمِعْتَ بِالْأَذَانِ بِالْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ أَيْ بُنَيَّ كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ جَمَّعَ الْجُمُعَةَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي حَرَّةِ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ فِي نَقِيعٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْخَضَمَاتُ قُلْتُ وَكَمْ أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا»

كُنْتُ قَائِدَ أَبِي حِينَ كُفَّ بَصَرُهُ فَإِذَا خَرَجْتُ بِهِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ فَسَمِعَ الْأَذَانَ بِهَا اسْتَغْفَرَ لِأَبِي أُمَامَةَ أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ فَمَكَثْتُ حِينًا أَسْمَعُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ عَجْزًا أَنْ لَا أَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ هَذَا فَخَرَجْتُ كَمَا كُنْتُ أَخْرُجُ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ الْأَذَانَ بِالْجُمُعَةِ اسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَتَاهُ أَرَأَيْتَ اسْتِغْفَارَكَ لِأَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ كُلَّمَا سَمِعْتَ الْأَذَانَ بِالْجُمُعَةِ؟ فَقَالَ أَيْ بُنَيَّ كَانَ أَسْعَدُ أَوَّلَ مَنْ جَمَّعَ بِنَا فِي الْمَدِينَةِ قَبْلَ مَقْدَمِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي هَزْمٍ مِنْ حَرَّةِ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ فِي نَقِيعٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْخَضَمَاتُ قُلْتُ وَكَمْ أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا  

"عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمنِ بنِ كعْبِ بنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: كُنْتُ قَائِدَ أَبى حِينَ ذَهَبَ بَصرُه فَكُنْتُ إِذا خَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ إِلى الجمعة فَسمِع التَّأذِينَ اسْتَغْفر لأَبِى أُمَامَةَ أسْعَد بْنِ زَرَارَةَ وَدَعَا لَهُ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: يَا أَبتِ مَا شَأنُكَ إِذَا سَمِعْتَ التَّأْذِينَ اسْتَغْفَرتَ لأَبِى أُمَامَةَ وَدَعْوتَ لَهُ وَصليْت عليه قَالَ: أى بنَّى كَانَ أَول مَنْ سَمِع (*) بِنَا قَبْلَ قُدُومِ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ فِى بَقيع الخضْمَاتِ فِى هزم بنِى بياضة، قُلْتُ: وكم كُنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ: كُنَّا أَرْبَعين رَجُلًا".
