When we said prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we pronounced: Peace be upon you and Mercy of Allah, peace be upon you and Mercy of Allah, and made gesture with the hand on both the sides. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him said: What do you point out with your hands as if they are the tails of headstrong horses? This is enough for you that one should place one's hand on one's thigh and then pronounce salutation upon one's brother on the right side and then on the left.

كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْنَا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى الْجَانِبَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلاَمَ تُومِئُونَ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمُسٍ إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى أَخِيهِ مَنْ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ وَشِمَالِهِ

When we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one of us gave the salutation and pointed with his hand to the man to his right side and left side. When he finished his prayer, he said: What is the matter that one of you points with his hand (during prayer) just like the tails of restive horses. It is sufficient for one of you, or is it not sufficient for one of you to say in this manner? And he pointed with his finger; one should salute his brother at his right and left side.

كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمَ أَحَدُنَا أَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ مِنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَمِنْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَالَ مَا بَالُ أَحَدِكُمْ يَرْمِي بِيَدِهِ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمْسٍ إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَوْ أَلاَ يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى أَخِيهِ مَنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَمَنْ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ

Is it not sufficient for one of you or for one of them that he puts his hand on his thigh, and then gives the salutation to his brother to his right and left sides.

أَمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَوْ أَحَدَهُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى أَخِيهِ مَنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَمَنْ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ

"We used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we would greet (others) with our hands. He said: 'What is the matter with those who greet (others) with their hands as if they were tails of wild horses? It is sufficient for any one of you to put his hand on his thigh and say: "As-salamu 'alaikum, as-salamu 'alaikum."

كُنَّا نُصَلِّي خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَنُسَلِّمُ بِأَيْدِينَا فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ هَؤُلاَءِ يُسَلِّمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمْسٍ أَمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَهُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يَقُولَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ

"I heard Jabir bin Samurah say: 'When we prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ we used to say: As-salamu 'alaykum, as-salamu 'alaykum (peace be upon you, peace be upon you)" - and Mis'ar (one of the narrators) pointed with his hand to the right and the left. He ﷺ said: 'What is the matter with these people who wave their hands as if they are the tails of wild horses? It is sufficient for one to place his hands on his thighs and to say the salam to his brother to his right and left."

سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ يَقُولُ كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قُلْنَا السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَأَشَارَ مِسْعَرٌ بِيَدِهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ هَؤُلاَءِ الَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمُسِ أَمَا يَكْفِي أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى أَخِيهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ

[AI] When we used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we would greet with "peace be upon you" using our right and left hands. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is the matter with some people who throw their hands as if they were the tails of horses? Shouldn't one of you settle down and indicate with his hand towards his thigh, then greet his companion on his right and left?"

كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا وَرَاءَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قُلْنَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِأَيْدِينَا يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمْسِ أَلَا يَسْكُنُ أَحَدُكُمْ وَيُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ

[AI] We used to say behind the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when we greeted him with Salam, "Peace be upon you, peace be upon you." One of us would signal with his hand from his right side and from his left side. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "What is the matter with those who throw their hands in prayer as if they were the tails of galloping horses? Is it not enough for one of you to place his hand on his thigh, then say the Salam from his right and his left?"

When we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one of us gave the salutation and pointed with his hand to the man to his right side and left side. [AI] When we used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ , we would say, "Peace be upon you with our right hand and our left hand." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Why do I see your hands resembling the tails of horses? It is enough for one of you to place his hand on his thigh and then greet with his right hand and his left hand."

كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قُلْنَا بِأَيْدِينَا السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا لِي أَرَى أَيْدِيَكُمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمْسٍ إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ»

[AI] "When we used to be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , one of us would raise his right and left hand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'Why do I see you raising your hands as if they are the tails of horses being whipped by the sun? Isn't it enough for one of you to place his hand on his thigh and then greet the one on his right and the one on his left?'"

كُنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَفَعَ أَحَدُنَا يَدَهُ يُمْنَةً وَيُسْرَةً فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا لِي أَرَاكُمْ رَافِعِي أَيْدِيكُمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمْسٍ أَوَلَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى مَنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَمَنْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ»

[AI] When we used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ, we would say, by motioning with his index finger, "Assalamu alaikum, assalamu alaikum". Then the Prophet ﷺ said to us, "What is wrong with some people who throw their hands in prayer as if they were the tails of horses? Is it not sufficient for any of you, or for one of you, to place his hand on his thigh, then to greet his brother from his right and left (side)?"

كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قُلْنَا يَعْنِي الْإِشَارَةَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ السَّبَابَةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ لَنَا يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمْسِ أَلَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَكُمْ أَوْ أَحَدَهُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَى أَخِيهِ مِنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ

[AI] When we used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ , we would say as a sign with his index finger: "Peace be upon you, peace be upon you." The Prophet ﷺ then said to us, "Why do some people throw their hands during prayer as if they were the tails of wild horses at sunset? Is it not enough for one of you to place his hand on his thigh and then say the salaam by turning his hand to the right and left?"

كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قُلْنَا يَعْنِي الْإِشَارَةَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ السَّبَابَةِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ لَنَا يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَرْمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ الْخَيْلِ الشُّمْسِ أَمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَهُمْ أَوْ أَحَدَكُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ

"عَلامَ تُؤمِنُونَ بأَيديكم؟ كَأنَّهَا أَذنَابُ خَيلٍ شُمْسٍ، وَإِنَّمَا يَكْفى أَحَدَكم أَن يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذهِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى أَخِيهِ. مَن عَلَى يمِينِهِ وَشِمالِهِ".

"مَا بَالُ هَؤُلاءِ يُسَلِّمُونَ بأَيديهِم كَأَنَّهَا (*) أذْنَابُ خَيلٍ شُمْسٍ، أَمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَهُمْ أَنْ يَضَع يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخذِه، يَقُولُ: السَّلامُ عَلَيكُمْ، السَّلامُ عَليكُمْ" .

"مَا لِي أَرَي أَيدِيَكُم كَأَنَّها أَذْنَابُ خَيلٍ شُمْسٍ، إِنَّما يَكْفِي أَحَدُكُم أَنْ يَضَع يَدَيه عَلَى فَخذِه، ثُمَّ يُسَلِّم عَن يَمِينِه وَعَن شِمالِه".
