84. Sūrat al-Inshiqāq

٨٤۔ سُورَةُ الإنشِقاق

84.1 On Doomsday, heaven will split asunder and the earth will be spread out. Books of Deeds will be distributed; the righteous will be happy, while the disbelievers will be calling for death.

٨٤۔١ مقطع في سُورَةُ الإنشِقاق

quran:84:1In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

When the sky has split ˹open˺  

When the heaven is rent asunder,
القرآن:٨٤:١بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ  

{إذا السماء انشقت}.
quran:84:2

And has responded to its Lord and was obligated ˹to do so˺  

and heeds, gives ear to and, in rending itself asunder, obeys, its Lord as it should, that is, as its duty is to heed and obey,
القرآن:٨٤:٢

وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ  

{وأذنت} سمعت وأطاعت في الانشقاق {لربها وحقت} أي وحق لها أن تسمع وتطيع.
quran:84:3

And when the earth has been extended  

and when the earth is stretched out, ˹when˺ its width is increased, just as a piece of leather is stretched, so that no edifice or mountain remains upon it,
القرآن:٨٤:٣

وَإِذَا الْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ  

{وإذا الأرض مدت} زيد في سعتها كما يمد الأديم ولم يبق عليها بناء ولا جبل.
quran:84:4

And has cast out that within it and relinquished ˹it˺  

and casts out all that is in it, of the dead, onto its surface, and empties itself, thereof,
القرآن:٨٤:٤

وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ  

{وألقت ما فيها} من الموتى إلى ظاهرها {وتخلت} عنه.
quran:84:5

And has responded to its Lord and was obligated ˹to do so˺ -  

and heeds, ˹and˺ in this respect, gives ear to and obeys, its Lord, as it should: all of this will be on the Day of Resurrection (the response to idhā, ‘when’, and ˹to˺ all that is supplemented thereto, has been omitted; but it is indicated by what follows it, and is implied to be ˹something like˺ laqiya’l-insānu ‘amalahu, ‘man will encounter his deeds’).
القرآن:٨٤:٥

وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ  

{وأذنت} سمعت وأطاعت في ذلك {لربها وحقت} وذلك كله يكون يوم القيامة، وجواب إذا وما عطف عليها محذوف دل عليه ما بعده تقديره لقي الإنسان عمله.
quran:84:6

O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with ˹great˺ exertion and will meet it.  

O man! Verily you are labouring, exerting your efforts, toward, the encounter with, your Lord, that is, death, laboriously, and you will encounter it, that is, you will encounter your mentioned good or evil deeds on the Day of Resurrection.
القرآن:٨٤:٦

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنْسَانُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَاقِيهِ  

{يا أيها الإنسان إنك كادح} جاهد في عملك {إلى} لقاء {ربك} وهو الموت {كدحا فملاقيه} أي ملاق عملك المذكور من خير أو شر يوم القيامة.
quran:84:7

Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,  

Then as for him who is given his book, the record of his deeds, in his right hand — and this is the believer —
القرآن:٨٤:٧

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ  

{فأما من أوتي كتابه} كتاب عمله {بيمينه} هو المؤمن.
quran:84:8

He will be judged with an easy account  

he will receive an easy reckoning, which ˹simply˺ entails the presentation of his deeds to him, as in the hadīth of the two Sahīhs ˹of Bukhārī and Muslim˺ — in which there is also ˹a hadīth saying˺, ‘He who is reckoned with at length, will be destined for perdition’ — and after this presentation ˹of his deeds to the believer˺ he will be excused,
القرآن:٨٤:٨

فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا  

(فسوف يحاسب حسابا يسيرا) هو عرض عمله عليه كما في حديث الصحيحين وفيه "" من نوقش الحساب هلك "" وبعد العرض يتجاوز عنه.
quran:84:9

And return to his people in happiness.  

and return to his family, in Paradise, joyful, because of it.
القرآن:٨٤:٩

وَيَنْقَلِبُ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا  

{وينقلب إلى أهله} في الجنة {مسرورا} بذلك.
quran:84:10

But as for he who is given his record behind his back,  

But as for him who is given his book from behind his back — and this is the disbeliever, whose right hand is chained to his neck and whose left hand, by which he is given the book, is placed behind his back,
القرآن:٨٤:١٠

وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ  

{وأما من أوتي كتابه وراء ظهره} هو الكافر تغل يمناه إلى عنقه وتجعل يسراه وراء ظهره فيأخذ بها كتابه.
quran:84:11

He will cry out for destruction  

he will pray, upon seeing what is in it, for annihilation, he will invoke destruction against himself by saying: yā thabūrāh, ‘O annihilation ˹of mine˺!’,
القرآن:٨٤:١١

فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُو ثُبُورًا  

{فسوف يدعو} عند رؤيته ما فيه {ثبورا} ينادي هلاكه بقوله: يا ثبوراه.
quran:84:12

And ˹enter to˺ burn in a Blaze.  

and he will enter the Blaze, an intense fire (a variant reading ˹for yaslā, ‘he will enter’˺ has yusallā, ‘he will be admitted’).
القرآن:٨٤:١٢

وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا  

{ويصلى سعيرا} يدخل النار الشديدة وفي قراءة بضم الياء وفتح الصاد واللام المشددة.
quran:84:13

Indeed, he had ˹once˺ been among his people in happiness;  

Indeed among his folk, his clan, in the world, he used to be joyful, wanton, lusting after his desires;
القرآن:٨٤:١٣

إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِي أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا  

{إنه كان في أهله} عشيرته في الدنيا {مسرورا} بطرا باتباعه لهواه.
quran:84:14

Indeed, he had thought he would never return ˹to Allah˺.  

indeed he thought that (an: softened in place of the hardened form, with its subject omitted, that is to say, annahu) he would never return, to his Lord.
القرآن:٨٤:١٤

إِنَّهُ ظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ يَحُورَ  

{إنه ظن أن} مخففة من الثقيلة واسمها محذوف، أي أنه {لن يحور} يرجع إلى ربه.
quran:84:15

But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever of him, Seeing.  

Nay!, he will return to Him; indeed his Lord is ever Seer of him, knowing that he would return to Him.
القرآن:٨٤:١٥

بَلَىٰ إِنَّ رَبَّهُ كَانَ بِهِ بَصِيرًا  

{بلى} يرجع إليه {إن ربه كان به بصيرا} عالما برجوعه إليه.
quran:84:16

So I swear by the twilight glow  

So I swear (fa-lā: lā is extra) by the twilight (al-shafaq), the reddishness visible in the horizon after the sunset,
القرآن:٨٤:١٦

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ  

{فلا أقسم} لا زائدة {بالشفق} هو الحمرة في الأفق بعد غروب الشمس.
quran:84:17

And ˹by˺ the night and what it envelops  

and ˹by˺ the night and what it envelops, ˹what˺ it brings together of creatures and otherwise that have entered into it,
القرآن:٨٤:١٧

وَاللَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ  

{والليل وما وسق} جمع ما دخل عليه من الدواب وغيرها.
quran:84:18

And ˹by˺ the moon when it becomes full  

and ˹by˺ the moon when it is at the full, and its light is complete, and this happens during the nights of the full moon:
القرآن:٨٤:١٨

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا اتَّسَقَ  

{والقمر إذا اتسق} اجتمع وتم نوره وذلك في الليالي البيض.
quran:84:19

˹That˺ you will surely experience state after state.  

you will surely journey (tarkabunna is actually tarkabūnanna, but the nūn of the indicative has been omitted because of two identical letters following one another, and the wāw ˹is omitted˺ because of two unvocalised consonants coming together), from stage to stage, state after state, namely, death, then life, then what comes afterwards of the states at the Resurrection.
القرآن:٨٤:١٩

لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَنْ طَبَقٍ  

{لتركبن} أيها الناس أصله تركبونن حذفت نون الرفع لتوالي الأمثال والواو لالتقاء الساكنين {طبقا عن طبق} حالا بعد حال، وهو الموت ثم الحياة وما بعدها من أحوال القيامة.
