So Huwayysah spoke, then Muhayysah spoke. The Messenger of Allah said: "Either (the Jews) will pay the Diyah for your comanion, or war will be declared on them." The Messenger of Allah sent a letter to that effect (to the Jews) and they wrote back saying: "By Allah, we did not kill him." The Messenger of Allah said to Huwayysah. Muhayysah and 'Abdur-Rahman: "Will you swear an oath establishing your claim to the blood money of your companion?" They said: "No." He said: "Should the jews swear an oath for you? They said: "They are not Muslims." So the Messenger of Allah paid (the Diyah) himself, and he sent one hundred she-camels to their abodes. Sahl said: "A red she-camel from among them kicked me."

Sahl bin Abi Hathma and some great men of his tribe said, ʿAbdullah bin 'Sahl and Muhaiyisa went out to Khaibar as they were struck with poverty and difficult living conditions. Then Muhaiyisa was informed that ʿAbdullah had been killed and thrown in a pit or a spring. Muhaiyisa went to the Jews and said, "By Allah, you have killed my companion." The Jews said, "By Allah, we have not killed him." Muhaiyisa then came back to his people and told them the story. He, his elder brother Huwaiyisa and ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Sahl came (to the Prophet) and he who had been at Khaibar, proceeded to speak, but the Prophet ﷺ said to Muhaiyisa, "The eldest! The eldest!" meaning, "Let the eldest of you speak." So Huwaiyisa spoke first and then Muhaiyisa. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Jews should either pay the blood money of your (deceased) companion or be ready for war." After that Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote a letter to the Jews in that respect, and they wrote that they had not killed him. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwaiyisa, Muhaiyisa and ʿAbdur-Rahman, "Can you take an oath by which you will be entitled to take the blood money?" They said, "No." He said (to them), "Shall we ask the Jews to take an oath before you?" They replied, "But the Jews are not Muslims." So Allah's Apostle gave them one-hundred she-camels as blood money from himself. Sahl added: When those she-camels were made to enter the house, one of them kicked me with its leg.

By Allah, it is you who have killed him. They said: By Allah, we have not killed him. He then came to his people, and made mention of that to them. Then came he and his brother Huwayyisa, and he was older than he, and 'Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl. Then Muhayyisa went to speak, and it was he who had accompanied ('Abdullah) to Khaibar, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Muhayyisa: Observe greatness of the great (he meant the seniority of age). Then Huwayyisa spoke and then Muhayyisa also spoke. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: They should either pay blood-wit for your companion, or be prepared for war. Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote about it to them (to the Jews). They wrote: Verily, by Allah, we have not killed him. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisa and Muhayyisa and Abd al-Rahman: Are you prepared to take oath in order to entitle yourselves for the blood-wit of your companion? They said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Then the Jews will take oath (of their innocence). They said: They are not Muslims. Messenger of Allah ﷺ, however, himself paid the blood-wit to them and sent to them one hundred camels until they entered into their houses, Sahl said: One red she-camel among them kicked me.

'Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayyishah set out for Khaibar because of some problem that had arisen. Someone came to Muhayyishah, and he told him that Abdullah bin Sahl had been killed and thrown into a pit or well in Khaibar. He came to the Jews and said: “By Allah, you killed him.” They said: “By Allah, we did not kill him.” Then he went back to his people and told them about that. Then he and his brother Huwayyisah, who was older than him, and 'Abdur-Rahman bin Sahl, came (to the Prophet ﷺ). Muhayyisah, who was the one who had been at Khaibar, went and he began to speak, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Let the elder speak first.” So Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Either (the Jews) will pay the blood money for your companion, or war will be declared on them.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a letter to that effect (to the Jews) and they wrote back saying: “By Allah, we did not kill him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisah, Muhayyisah and Abdur-Rahman: “Will you swear an oath establishing your claim to the blood money of your companion?” They said: “No” He said: “Should the Jews swear an oath for you?” They said: “They are not Muslims.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood money himself, and he sent one hundred she-camels to them and some of them entered the house. Sahl said: “A red she-camels from among them kicked me.”

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu Layla ibn Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Sahl from Sahl ibn Abi Hathma that some of the great men of his people informed him that Abdullah ibn Sahl and Muhayyisa went out to Khaybar because extreme poverty had overtaken them. Muhayyisa returned and said that Abdullah ibn Sahl had been killed and thrown in a shallow well or spring. The jews came and he said, "By Allah! You have killed him." They said, "By Allah! We have not killed him!" Then he made for his people and mentioned that to them. Then he, his brother Huwayyisa, who was older than him, and Abd ar-Rahman, set out. Muhayyisa began to speak, as he had been at Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "The greater first, the greater first," meaning in age. So Huwayyisa spoke and then Muhayyisa spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Either they pay your companion's blood-money or we will declare war against them." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote that to them and they wrote, "By Allah, we did not kill him!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisa, Muhayyisa, and Abd ar-Rahman, "Do you swear and claim the blood of your companion?" They said, "No." He said, "Shall the jews swear to you?" They said, "But they are not muslims." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave blood-money from his own property, and sent them one hundred camels to their house. Sahl added, "A red camel among them kicked me."

[Machine] Narrated by Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah: They found Abdullah ibn Sahl from the Ansar killed in a valley of Khaybar called Qalib. His brother and his paternal uncle went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . His brother was Abdullah ibn Sahl and his paternal uncle was Huwayyisah and Muhaysah. Abdullah ibn Rahmah went to speak in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "News of his death reached us, O Messenger of Allah, in a valley of Khaybar called Qalib." Then he mentioned the Jews, their evil and enmity. He said, "Please divide fifty of us from among yourselves, for it was said that the Jews killed him." They said, "How can we divide among what we did not observe?" He said, "Then let the Jews remove the burden of your blood by taking an oath that they did not kill him." They said, "How can we accept their oaths when they are polytheists?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished for it from Allah, and the morning of the next day I saw traces of its impact on him. It is said to Sufyan in the narrative, "And do you deserve the blood of your companion?" He said, "He is there."

[Machine] Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so his brother Abdullah ibn Sahl and his cousins Huyayy ibn Huwayyisa and Muhayyisa advanced before Abdullah ibn Rahman. Abdullah ibn Rahman was respected by the people and had a high status. Therefore, he approached first and spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before his cousins Huyayy ibn Huwayyisa and Muhayyisa. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The eldest should speak first." So Abdullah ibn Rahman spoke first, and then Huyayy ibn Huwayyisa spoke, followed by Muhayyisa. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, our companion was killed and there is no enemy in Khaybar except the Jews." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You accuse your killer and then swear upon him fifty oaths, and then you hand him over." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we cannot swear oaths about something we did not witness." He said, "They will swear oaths for you fifty times and absolve themselves from the blood of your companion." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we do not accept oaths of the Jews, as they are greater in disbelief than to swear oaths for a sin." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became pleased and said to them, "I will give you a hundred camels from my own possessions." Sahla said, "By Allah, I will never forget the sacrifice of a red she-camel from that." And I was holding onto it.

[Machine] "Then, they went against Abdullah and he was killed. His neck was struck until it was severed, then he was thrown into a pit among the pits of Khaybar. His companions called out to him, and they pulled him out and concealed him. Then, they arrived in Medina to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . His brother, Abdullah ibn Sahl, came forward. He had accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his two cousins, Huwayshah ibn Mas'ud and Muhayyisah. Abdullah spoke, and he was the youngest among them in age, but he had spilled blood and was respected among his people. When he finished speaking, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Al-Kubra! (The greatest!)' He then stepped back, and Huwayshah and Muhayyisah spoke. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You call your killer, then you swear fifty oaths upon him, then we will hand him over to you.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah! We would not swear upon something we do not know. We do not know who killed him except that it was a Jew, our enemy, and among their ranks he was killed.' He said, 'So, they would swear to you by Allah that they are innocent of the blood of your companion, and then they would dissociate themselves from it.' They said, 'We would not accept oaths from Jews. There is no greater crime than them swearing falsely.' He said, 'By Allah! [Machine] He heard Sahl ibn Abi Hathma saying that Abdullah ibn Sahl was found dead in a poor man, or impoverished district, or Khaybar region. So his brother, Abdullah ibn Sahl, went to the Prophet ﷺ , and his aunt, Huwaisah, and her two sons, Mahysah and Muhyysah, went with him. Then Abdullah ibn Sahl began to speak, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Al-kubra, al-kubra" (the greatest sin, the greatest sin). Then Muhyysah began to speak and mentioned the killing of Abdullah ibn Sahl. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, we found Abdullah ibn Sahl dead, and indeed the Jews are people of disbelief and treachery, and they are the ones who killed him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then you all swear fifty oaths, and you will either deserve your companion or the blood of your companion." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, how can we swear oaths about something we did not witness and were not present for?" He said, "Then the Jews will swear fifty oaths to you." They said, "How can we accept oaths from a people who are polytheists?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ settled the matter, and Sahl said, "Indeed, it indeed happened to me one morning."

[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated on the authority of Malik that Bakr ibn Sahl al-Dimyati narrated to us, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Yusuf, who said: "I am Malik, on the authority of Abu Layla ibn Abdullah ibn Sahl, on the authority of Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah that he was informed by some of the elders of his people that Abdullah ibn Sahl and Muhaysah went out to Khaybar due to some difficulty that had befallen them. Muhaysah then came and informed them that Abdullah ibn Sahl had been killed and thrown into a well or a blind person's home. He then went to the Jews and said, 'By Allah, you killed him.' They replied, 'By Allah, we did not kill him.' He then continued until he reached his people and mentioned this to them. So he and his brother Huwayyisah, who was older than him, along with Abdur Rahman ibn Sahl, went to Khaybar. Huwayyisah went forth to speak, even though he was the one who had been present in Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisah, 'Recite the takbir, recite the takbir,' intending for him to mention the year (of the event). Huwayyisah then spoke, and after him, Muhaysah spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Either they should hand over the killer or they should ready themselves for war.' So the Messenger of Allah sent them a letter regarding this matter and they wrote back, 'By Allah, we did not kill him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisah, Muhaysah, and Abdur Rahman ibn Sahl, 'You take an oath and you deserve the blood of your companion?' They replied, 'No.' He said, 'Then will the Jews take an oath for you?' They said, 'They are not Muslims.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was very displeased with this and sent them one hundred camels as compensation, until they were brought into their house. Sahl said, 'A red camel from among them ran ahead of me.'"

'Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayysah set out for Khaibar because of some problem that had arisen. Someone came to Muhayysah and he told him that 'Abdullah bin Sahl had been Killed and thrown into a pit, or a well. He came to the Jews and said: "By Allah, you killed him. " They said: "By Allah, we did not kill him."Then he went back to the Messenger of Allah and told him about that. Then he and Huwayysah - his brother who was older than him - and 'Abdur-Rahman bin Sahl, came (to the Prophet). Muhayysah, who was the one who had been at Khaibar, began to speak, but the messenger of Allah said: "Let the elder speak first," So Huwayysah elder speaks first." So Huwayysah spoke, then Muhayysah spoke. Sahl said: "A red she-camel from among them kicked me." The eldest one (eldest in regard to age should speak). So he kept quiet, and his companions (Muhayyisa and Huwayyisa) began to speak, and he ('Abd al Rahman) spoke along with them and they narrated to Messenger of Allah ﷺ the murder of 'Abdullah b. Sahl. Thereupon he said to them: Are you prepared to take fifty oaths so that you may be entitled (to blood-wit) of your companion (or your man who has murdered)? They said: How can we take an oath on a matter which we have not witnessed? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Then the Jews will exonerate themselves by fifty oaths. They said: How can we accept the oaths of people who are unbelievers? When Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that, he himself paid his blood-wit. (Using translation from Muslim 1669a)

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Sahil was struck by misfortune in Khaybar. He went out there with his companions to collect dates when he was found with a broken neck and was left to die. They then took him and hid him. Afterwards, they went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what happened. His brother, Abdullah ibn Al-Rahman, came forward with his cousins, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, the sons of Mas'ud. Abdullah ibn Al-Rahman was the youngest among them, but he was the bravest of the people. When he spoke before his cousins, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The eldest should speak first." So, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah spoke first, and then Abdullah spoke. He informed the Prophet ﷺ about the killing of their companion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You should name the killer and make a solemn oath of fifty oaths, and we will hand him over to you." They said, "We cannot make an oath about something we do not know." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then make a solemn oath by Allah, fifty oaths, that you did not kill him and you do not know who killed him, and then you can absolve yourselves from his blood." They said, "We would not accept oaths from the Jews that involve something greater than disbelief, let alone swear oaths about a sin." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ , on behalf of Sahil, offered a hundred camels as compensation. Sahil said, "By Allah, I will not even forget one morning of them. There was a red camel among them that kicked me while I was milking it."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Mu'hayyisah, "Say takbeer, say takbeer." Then Huwayyisah spoke first, and then Mu'hayyisah spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Either they should hand over your companion, or they should declare war." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to them regarding this matter, and they wrote in response, "By Allah, we did not kill him." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Huwayyisah, Mu'hayyisah, and 'Abdur-Rahman, "Do you swear and deserve the blood of your companion?" They said, "No." He said, "Then do the Jews swear?" They said, "No, they are not Muslims." He said, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ desires this from them," so he sent them a hundred camels until they were brought to them. Sahl said, "I was grazed by a red camel from it," and this is the wording of the narration of Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him.
