"We were in Medina with some of the Iraqi people, and we were struck with famine and Ibn Az- Zubair used to give us dates. Ibn ʿUmar used to pass by and say, "The Prophet ﷺ forbade us to eat two dates at a time, unless one takes the permission of one's companions."

كُنَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي بَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فَأَصَابَنَا سَنَةٌ فَكَانَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ يَرْزُقُنَا التَّمْرَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ ؓ يَمُرُّ بِنَا فَيَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الإِقْرَانِ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَسْتَأْذِنَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْكُمْ أَخَاهُ

"While at Medina we were struck with famine. Ibn Az-Zubair used to provide us with dates as our food. At the time of Ibn Az-Zubair, we were struck with famine, and he provided us with dates for our food. ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar used to pass by us while we were eating, and say, "Do not eat two dates together at a time, for the Prophet ﷺ forbade the taking of two dates together at a time (in a gathering)." Ibn ʿUmar used to add, "Unless one takes the permission of one's companions."

أَصَابَنَا عَامُ سَنَةٍ مَعَ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَرَزَقَنَا تَمْرًا فَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يَمُرُّ بِنَا وَنَحْنُ نَأْكُلُ وَيَقُولُ لاَ تُقَارِنُوا فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الْقِرَانِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَسْتَأْذِنَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ الإِذْنُ مِنْ قَوْلِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

[AI] We were in the city during the expedition of the people of Iraq. Then a year passed and Abdullah ibn Zubayr provided us with dates. Abdullah ibn Umar used to pass by us and say, "Do not compare yourselves, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited reciting the Qur'an except when the man consults his brother."

كُنَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي بَعْثِ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فَأَصَابَتْنَا سَنَةٌ فَجَعَلَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ يَرْزُقُنَا التَّمْرَ وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ يَمُرُّ بِنَا فَيَقُولُ لَا تُقَارِنُوا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الْقِرَانِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْتَأْمِرَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْكُمْ أَخَاهُ

Ibn Zubair used to provide us with dates during the time that the people were hard pressed because of famine (Once) as we were busy in eating there happened to appear before us Ibn 'Umar. He said: Don't eat two dates together, for Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade eating them together but only after seeking permission from his brother (partner). Shu'ba said: I do not think these words pertaining to seeking permission but from the words of Ibn 'Umar. (Using translation from Muslim 2045a)
