Gold is to be paid for by gold, silver by silver, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, dates by dates, and salt by salt, like for like and equal for equal, payment being made hand to hand. If these classes differ, then sell as you wish if payment is made hand to hand.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ مِثْلاً بِمِثْلٍ سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَإِذَا اخْتَلَفَتْ هَذِهِ الأَصْنَافُ فَبِيعُوا كَيْفَ شِئْتُمْ إِذَا كَانَ يَدًا بِيَدٍ

Gold is to be paid for by gold, silver by silver, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, dates by dates, salt by salt, like by like, payment being made hand to hand. He who made an addition to it, or asked for an addition, in fact dealt in usury. The receiver and the giver are equally guilty.

Dates are to be paid for by dates, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, salt by salt, like for like, payment being made on the spot. He who made an addition or demanded an addition, in fact, dealt in usury except in case where their classes differ.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ التَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْحِنْطَةُ بِالْحِنْطَةِ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ مِثْلاً بِمِثْلٍ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ اسْتَزَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى إِلاَّ مَا اخْتَلَفَتْ أَلْوَانُهُ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Gold is to be paid for with gold, raw and coined, silver with silver, raw and coined (in equal weight), wheat with wheat in equal measure, barley with barley in equal measure, dates with dates in equal measure, salt by salt with equal measure; if anyone gives more or asks more, he has dealt in usury. But there is no harm in selling gold for silver and silver (for gold), in unequal weight, payment being made on the spot. Do not sell them if they are to be paid for later. There is no harm in selling wheat for barley and barley (for wheat) in unequal measure, payment being made on the spot. If the payment is to be made later, then do not sell them. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been transmitted by Sa'id b. Abi 'Arubah, Hisham al-Dastawa'i and Qatadah from Muslim b. Yasar through his chain.

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Dates for dates, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, salt for salt, exchanged hand to hand. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba unless they are of different types."

"Ubadah bin As-Samit and Muawiyah met at a stopping place on the road. 'Ubadah told them: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade selling gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates"'- one of them said: 'salt for salt,"' but the other did not say it-"unless it was like for like, hand to hand. And he commanded us to sell gold for silver and silver for gold, and wheat for barley and barley for wheat, and to hand, however we wanted."' And one of them said: "Whoever gives more or ask for more has engaged in Riba."'

"Ubadah bin As-Samit and Muawiyah met at a stopping place on the road. 'Ubadah said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade us to sell gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates"' - one of them said: "salt for salt, " but the other did not say "unless it was equal amount for equal amount, like for like." News of this hadith reached Muawiyah and he stood up and said: 'What is the matter with men who narrate Hadiths from the Messenger of Allah when we accompanied him and we never heard him say it? News of that reached 'Ubadah bin As-Samit and he stood up and repeated the Hadith, then he said: 'We will narrate what we heard from the Messenger of Allah, whether Muawiyah likes it or not."' Qatadah contradicted him, he reported it from Muslim bin Yasar, from Abu Al-=Ashath, from 'Ubadah.

عُبَادَةُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَبِيعَ الذَّهَبَ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقَ بِالْوَرِقِ وَالْبُرَّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرَ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرَ بِالتَّمْرِ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا وَالْمِلْحَ بِالْمِلْحِ وَلَمْ يَقُلِ الآخَرُ إِلاَّ سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ مِثْلاً بِمِثْلٍ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا مَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى وَلَمْ يَقُلِ الآخَرُ وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَبِيعَ الذَّهَبَ بِالْوَرِقِ وَالْوَرِقَ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْبُرَّ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالشَّعِيرَ بِالْبُرِّ يَدًا بِيَدٍ كَيْفَ شِئْنَا فَبَلَغَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَامَ فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ رِجَالٍ يُحَدِّثُونَ أَحَادِيثَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ صَحِبْنَاهُ وَلَمْ نَسْمَعْهُ مِنْهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُبَادَةَ بْنَ الصَّامِتِ فَقَامَ فَأَعَادَ الْحَدِيثَ فَقَالَ لَنُحَدِّثَنَّ بِمَا سَمِعْنَاهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَإِنْ رُغِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ خَالَفَهُ قَتَادَةُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الأَشْعَثِ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ

"The messenger of Allah said: 'Gold for gold, of equal measure; silver for silver, of equal measure; salt for salt, dates for dates wheat for wheat, barley for barley, like for like. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba."' (Sahih) The wording is that of Muhammad Yaqub did not mention - "Wheat for wheat".

"Abu Al-Mutawakkil passed by them in the market and some people, including me, stood up to greet him. We said: 'We have come to you to ask you about transactions.' He said: 'I heard a man say to Abu Saeed Al-Khudri': 'Is there anyone between you and the Messenger of Allah (in the chain of narrators) apart from Abu Saeed Al-Khudri? He said: 'There is no one else between him and I. He said: Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, salt for salt, equal amounts. Whoever gives more than that or takes more has engaged in Riba, and the taker and the giver are the same."'

أَنَّ أَبَا الْمُتَوَكِّلِ مَرَّ بِهِمْ فِي السُّوقِ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ قَوْمٌ أَنَا مِنْهُمْ قَالَ قُلْنَا أَتَيْنَاكَ لِنَسْأَلَكَ عَنِ الصَّرْفِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ غَيْرُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ لَيْسَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ غَيْرُهُ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الذَّهَبَ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقَ بِالْوَرِقِ قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ أَوْ قَالَ وَالْفِضَّةَ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرَّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرَ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرَ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحَ بِالْمِلْحِ سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى وَالآخِذُ وَالْمُعْطِي فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Gold for gold, weight for weight, like for like; and silver for silver, weight for weight, like for like. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba."'

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ مِثْلاً بِمِثْلٍ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ مِثْلاً بِمِثْلٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى

"Ubadah bin Samit and Mu'awiyah happened to meet, either in a church or in a synagogue. 'Ubadah bin Samit narrated to them and said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from selling silver for silver, gold for gold, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, and dates for dates.'I one of them said: "And salt for salt," but the other did not say it. "And he commanded us to sell wheat for barley, or barley for wheat, hand-to-hand, however we wished."

'(Sell) silver for silver, gold for gold, barley for barley, wheat for wheat, like for like."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالْحِنْطَةُ بِالْحِنْطَةِ مِثْلاً بِمِثْلٍ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ prohibited selling gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, dates for dates, barley for barley, and salt for salt, except in equal amounts and at the same time. Whoever adds more or asks for more has practiced usury.

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الذَّهَبِ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرِّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالتَّمْرِ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالشَّعِيرِ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالْمِلْحِ بِالْمِلْحِ إِلَّا مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى»

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Dates for dates, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, salt for salt, exchanged hand to hand. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba unless they are of different types." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4559)

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man asked him, 'Is there anyone between you and the Prophet ﷺ other than Abu Sa'id?' He replied, 'No, by Allah, there is no one between me and the Prophet ﷺ other than Abu Sa'id.' He said, 'Gold is exchanged for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, and salt for salt, equal for equal. Whoever takes more or gives more has committed usury.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ أَمَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ غَيْرُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ؟ قَالَ لَا وَاللهِ مَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ غَيْرُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ مَنْ زَادَ أَوْ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى الْآخِذُ وَالْمُعْطِي فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ

[AI] There were people who used to sell silver from the spoils of war in exchange for currency. Ubada ibn As-Samit narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade exchanging gold for gold, silver for silver, dates for dates, barley for barley, and salt for salt, except in equal amounts and at the same time. Whoever increases or asks for an increase has conducted usury.

نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الذَّهَبِ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقِ بِالْوَرِقِ وَالتَّمْرِ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْبُرِّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرِ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا وَالْمِلْحِ بِالْمِلْحِ وَلَمْ يَقُلْهُ الْآخَرُ وَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا مَنْ زَادَ أَوْ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى وَلَمْ يَقُلْهُ الْآخَرُ وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَبِيعَ الذَّهَبَ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْفِضَّةَ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْبُرَّ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالشَّعِيرَ بِالْبُرِّ يَدًا بِيَدٍ كَيْفَ شِئْنَا

[AI] There were people who were trading silver items in a market for food and provisions. Ubada said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited trading gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, and salt for salt unless it is done hand to hand. Whoever exceeds or is exceeded has engaged in usury."

كَانَ أُنَاسٌ يَتَبَايَعُونَ آنِيَةَ فِضَّةٍ فِي مَغْنَمٍ إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ فَقَالَ عُبَادَةُ «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ بَيْعِ الذَّهَبِ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرِّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرِ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرِ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحِ بِالْمِلْحِ إِلَّا مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ اسْتَزَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gold is to be exchanged for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, and salt for salt, like for like, hand in hand. So, if these species differ, then sell as you wish if it is hand to hand."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَإِذَا اخْتَلَفَتْ هَذِهِ الْأَصْنَافُ فَبِيعُوا كَيْفَ شِئْتُمْ إِذَا كَانَ يَدًا بِيَدٍ»

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ مَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Dates for dates, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, salt for salt, exchanged hand to hand. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba unless they are of different types." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4559)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «التَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْحِنْطَةُ بِالْحِنْطَةِ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ يَدًا بَيْدٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى إِلَّا مَا اخْتَلَفَتْ أَلْوَانُهُ»

"Ubadah bin As-Samit and Muawiyah met at a stopping place on the road. 'Ubadah told them: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade selling gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates"'- one of them said: 'salt for salt,"' but the other did not say it-"unless it was like for like, hand to hand. And he commanded us to sell gold for silver and silver for gold, and wheat for barley and barley for wheat, and to hand, however we wanted."' "The Messenger of Allah forbade selling gold for gold, silver for silver, dates for dates, wheat for wheat, barley for barley"- one of them said: "salt for salt," but the other did not say it-"unless it was equal amount for equal amount, like for like." "Ubadah bin As-Samit and Muawiyah met at a stopping place on the road. 'Ubadah said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade us to sell gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates"' - one of them said: "salt for salt, " but the other did not say "unless it was equal amount for equal amount, like for like." News of that reached 'Ubadah bin As-Samit and he stood up and repeated the Hadith, then he said: 'We will narrate what we heard from the Messenger of Allah, whether Muawiyah likes it or not."' عُبَادَةُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَنْ نَبِيعَ الذَّهَبَ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقَ بِالْوَرِقِ وَالْبُرَّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرَ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرَ بِالتَّمْرِ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا وَالْمِلْحَ بِالْمِلْحِ وَلَمْ يَقُلِ الْآخَرُ إِلَّا سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا مَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى وَلَمْ يَقُلْهُ الْآخَرُ وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَبِيعَ الذَّهَبَ بِالْوَرِقِ وَالْوَرِقَ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْبُرَّ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالشَّعِيرَ بِالْبُرِّ يَدًا بِيَدٍ كَيْفَ شِئْنَا فَبَلَغَ الْحَدِيثُ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَامَ فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ رِجَالٍ يُحَدِّثُونَ أَحَادِيثَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ صَحِبْنَاهُ فَلَمْ نَسْمَعْهَا مِنْهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُبَادَةَ فَقَامَ فَأَعَادَ الْحَدِيثَ وَقَالَ لَنُحَدِّثَنَّ بِمَا سَمِعْنَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِنْ رُغِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ خَالَفَهُ قَتَادَةُ فَرَوَاهُ عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَشْعَثِ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ

"The messenger of Allah said: 'Gold for gold, of equal measure; silver for silver, of equal measure; salt for salt, dates for dates wheat for wheat, barley for barley, like for like. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba."' (Sahih) The wording is that of Muhammad Yaqub did not mention - "Wheat for wheat". (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4564)

"Abu Al-Mutawakkil passed by them in the market and some people, including me, stood up to greet him. We said: 'We have come to you to ask you about transactions.' He said: 'I heard a man say to Abu Saeed Al-Khudri': 'Is there anyone between you and the Messenger of Allah (in the chain of narrators) apart from Abu Saeed Al-Khudri? He said: 'There is no one else between him and I. He said: Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, salt for salt, equal amounts. Whoever gives more than that or takes more has engaged in Riba, and the taker and the giver are the same."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4565)

أَنَّ أَبَا الْمُتَوَكِّلِ مَرَّ بِهِمْ فِي السُّوقِ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ قَوْمٌ أَنَا فِيهِمْ قَالَ قُلْنَا أَتَيْنَاكَ لِنَسْأَلَكَ عَنِ الصَّرْفِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَمَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ غَيْرُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ؟ قَالَ لَيْسَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ غَيْرُهُ قَالَ قَالَ «الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقُ بِالْوَرِقِ» قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ أَوْ قَالَ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ سَوَاءً بِسَوَاءٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى وَالْآخِذُ وَالْمُعْطِي فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Gold for gold, weight for weight, like for like; and silver for silver, weight for weight, like for like. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in Riba."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4569)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى»

[AI] "Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ: Gold is to be paid for with gold, like for like. Silver is to be paid for with silver, like for like. Grain is to be paid for with grain, like for like. Dates are to be paid for with dates, like for like. Salt is to be paid for with salt, like for like. Whoever increases or asks for more has dealt in usury, but there is no harm in buying grain with gold hand to hand. The greater amount of the two commodities should be paid as it is the correct one. This hadith is authentic and is narrated by Abu Qilabah from Abu Al-Ash'ath from 'Ubadah."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ تِبْرُهُ وَعَيْنُهُ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ تِبْرُهَا وَعَيْنُهَا وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ مَنْ زَادَ أَوِ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى وَلَا بَأْسَ بِبَيْعِ الشَّعِيرِ بِالْبُرِّ يَدًا بِيَدٍ وَالشَّعِيرُ أَكْثَرُهُمَا هَذَا هُوَ الصَّحِيحُ وَالْحَدِيثُ الثَّابِتُ صَحِيحٌ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَشْعَثِ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ مَرْفُوعًا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gold should be exchanged with gold based on weight, and silver should be exchanged with silver based on weight. Salt should be exchanged with salt in equal measure, barley should be exchanged with barley in equal measure, wheat should be exchanged with wheat in equal measure, and dates should be exchanged with dates in equal measure. Anyone who adds more or asks for more has engaged in a form of usury. So, sell gold for silver hand to hand, however you wish, sell dates for salt hand to handing, and sell barley for wheat hand to hand, however you wish."

Gold is to be paid for by gold, silver by silver, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, dates by dates, salt by salt, like by like, payment being made hand to hand. He who made an addition to it, or asked for an addition, in fact dealt in usury. The receiver and the giver are equally guilty. (Using translation from Muslim 1584e)

Dates are to be paid for by dates, wheat by wheat, barley by barley, salt by salt, like for like, payment being made on the spot. He who made an addition or demanded an addition, in fact, dealt in usury except in case where their classes differ. (Using translation from Muslim 1588a)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ التَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْحِنْطَةُ بِالْحِنْطَةِ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ اسْتَزَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى إِلَّا مَا اخْتَلَفَتْ أَلْوَانُهُ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ فَإِذَا اخْتَلَفَتْ هَذِهِ الْأَصْنَافُ فَبِيعُوا كَيْفَ شِئْتُمْ إِذَا كَانَ يَدًا بِيَدٍ

[AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, he said that gold is measured by gold in weight, and silver is measured by silver in weight, and barley is measured by barley in measure, and dates are measured by dates, and salt is measured by salt. So whoever increases or seeks to increase, then he has committed usury.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ الذَّهَبُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ وَالْفِضَّةُ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ كَيْلًا بِكَيْلٍ وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ كَيْلًا بِكَيْلٍ وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ وَالْمِلْحُ بِالْمِلْحِ فَمَنْ زَادَ أَوِ اسْتَزَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى

Gold is to be paid for by gold with equal weight, like for like, and silver is to be paid for by silver with equal weight, like for like. He who made an addition to it or demanded an addition dealt in usury. (Using translation from Muslim 1588c)

"التَّمْرُ بالتَّمْرِ والحِنطةُ بالحِنْطَةِ والشَّعِيرُ بالشَّعير، والذهبُ بالذهَبِ، والفِضَّةُ بالفِضَّةِ، يدًا بيد، عَينًا بعَين، مِثْلًا بمِثْلِ، فَمَنْ زاد فهو ربا".

"التَّمْرُ بالتَّمْرِ، والحنْطَةُ بالحِنْطَةِ، والشعيرُ بالشَّعيرِ، والمِلحُ بالمِلح، مِثْلًا بمِثْلِ، يَدًا بِيَدٍ، فمن زادَ أو استزادَ فقد أَربى إِلا ما اخْتَلَفَتْ ألوانهُ".

"الحنْطَةُ بِالحنطَةِ والشعيرُ بالشعِيرِ والتَّمْرُ بالتَّمْرِ، والمِلحُ بِالمِلح كَيلًا بكَيلٍ، وَوَزْنًا بوزن، فمن زادَ أَو ازداد فقد أَرْبى، إِلا ما اخْتَلَف".

"الذَّهُبُ بالذَّهَبِ مِثْلًا بمثلٍ، الفِضَّةُ بالفضَّة مِثلًا بمِثْلٍ، والتَّمْرُ بالتمْرُ مِثْلًا بمِثلٍ، والبُرُّ بالبُرِّ مِثْلًا بمِثل، والمِلح بالمِلح مِثْلا بمِثل، والشَّعِيرُ بالشَّعِيرِ مِثْلًا بِمثِلٍ فمن زادَ أوَ (ازْدَادَ) فَقَدْ أرْبى. بيعُوا الذَّهَبَ بالفِضة كَيف شِئْتم يَدًا بِيَدٍ، وبيعوا البُرَّ بالتَّمْرِ كَيفِ شِئتم يَدًا بِيَدٍ وبيعُوا الشَّعِيرَ بالتَّمْر كَيف شِئْتُم يَدًا بِيَدٍ".

"الذَّهبُ بالذَّهَبِ، والفضةُ بالفِضَّة، والبُرُّ بالبُرِّ، والشَّعِير بالشَّعِيرِ، والتَّمر بالتَّمْرِ، والمِلح بالمِلح، مِثْلًا بمثلٍ، سَواءً بسواءٍ، يدًا بيدٍ، فإِذا اخْتَلَفَتْ هذه الأَصنافُ، فَبِيعُوا كيفَ شِئْتُم إِذَا كانَ يدًا بيدٍ".

"الذَّهبُ بالذهب، والفضَّةُ بالفضة، والبُرُّ بِالبُرِّ، والشَّعِيرُ بالشَّعِير والتَّمْرُ بالتَّمرِ، وَالملْح بِالمِلْح، مِثْلًا يِمِثلٍ، يَدًا بِيِد، فَمَن زَادَ أَوْ اسْتَزَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى، والآخِذُ والمُعْطَى فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ".

"الذَّهَبُ بالذَّهَبِ تِبْرُهَا وَعَيها، والفِضَّةُ بالفِضَّة تِبْرهَا وَعَينُهَا، وَالبُرُّ بالبُرُّ مُدَّين بمُدَّين، والشَّعيرُ بالشَّعِير مُدَّين بمُدَّين، والتَّمْرُ بالتَّمْرُ مُدَّين بِمُدَّين والمِلحُ بالملِح مُدَّين بمدَّين، فَمَنْ زَادَ أوْ ازْدَادَ فَقَدْ أرْبى، وَلَا بَأس بِبَيعِ الذَّهَب بِالفِضَّةِ والفِضَّة بالذَّهَبِ أَكثَرَهما يَدًا بيَدٍ، وأما نَسيئَه فلا، ولا بَأسَ ببَيع البُرُّ بالشَّعِير، والشَّعِير بالبُرِّ أَكثَرَهما يَدًا بيدٍ وأما نسيئةً فَلَا".

"الذَّهَبُ بالذَّهَبِ وَزنًا بِوَزْنٍ مِثْلًا بمثْل، تبرُهُ وعَينُهُ، فمنْ زَادَ أَو اسْتَزَادَ فقد أَرْبَى، والشَّعِير الشَّعِيرِ، والتَّمْرُ بالتَّمْر، والمِلْحُ بالمِلْحَ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ فمنْ زَادَ أو اسْتَزَادَ فَقَدْ أَرْبَى".

"الْفِضَّةُ بالفِضَّةِ، والذَّهَبُ بالذَّهَب، والشَّعِيرُ بالْشَّعِيرِ، والْحِنْطَةُ بالحنطة مِثْلًا بمِثْلٍ" .
