٤۔ كِتَابُ الزَّكَاةِ ص ٢
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When the heavens, rivers, and springs are watered, or when there is a husband, a tenth (of the produce) is due. And when it is watered with watering cans or through rainfall, half of a tenth is due." Abu Abdur-Rahman narrated it from Nafi' who narrated it from Ibn Umar from Umar who said this. Salim and Nafi' differed on three hadiths, and this is one of them. The second is: "Whoever sells a slave and has wealth." Salim narrated it from his father who narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ , and Nafi' narrated it from Ibn Umar from Umar who said this, and Salim narrated it from his father who narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ : "A fire will come out from the direction of Yemen." And Nafi' narrated it from Ibn Umar from Ka'b who said this. Abu Abdur-Rahman and Salim said, "It is more correct (authentic) than what Nafi' has narrated, and the hadiths of Nafi' are more noble and preferable. And with Allah is success."

He narrated it from Abu Az-Zubair from Jabir, and the hadith of Ibn Juraij is more accurate according to us, although Amr bin Al-Harith is more reliable than him. And with Allah is the improvement (of understanding)." Abu Abdur-Rahman said, "Amr bin Al-Harith is one of the preservers of hadith and Malik narrated from him."

Hilal, a man from the tribe of Banu Mat'an brought a tenth of honey which he possessed in beehives to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He asked him (the apostle of Allah) to give the wood known as Salabah as a protected (or restricted) land. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him that wood as a protected land. When Umar ibn al-Khattab succeeded, Sufyan ibn Wahb wrote to Umar asking him about this wood. Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote to him: If he (Hilal) pays you the tithe on honey what he used to pay to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, leave the protected land of Salabah in his possession; otherwise those bees are like those of any wood; anyone can take the honey as he likes. Next morning the people said that he had given his object of charity to a thief. (On hearing that) he said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. I will give alms again." And so he again went out with his alms and (unknowingly) gave it to an adulteress. Next morning the people said that he had given his alms to an adulteress last night. The man said, "O Allah! (The people) next morning said that he had given his alms to a wealthy person. He said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I had given alms) to a thief, to an adulteress and to a wealthy man." Then someone came and said to him, "The alms which you gave to the thief, might make him abstain from stealing, and that given to the adulteress might make her abstain from illegal sexual intercourse (adultery), and that given to the wealthy man might make him take a lesson from it and spend his wealth which Allah has given him, in Allah's cause." He entered the Masjid in scruffy clothes and I hoped that you would notice him, and give charity to him, but you did not do that, So I said, 'Give in charity.' You gave in charity, and I gave him two garments, then I said; 'Give in charity' and he threw one of his two garments. Take your garment." And he rebuked him. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2536)
