In the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ the sun eclipsed, so he led the people in prayer, and stood up and performed a long Qiyam, then bowed for a long while. He stood up again and performed a long Qiyam but this time the period of standing was shorter than the first. He bowed again for a long time but shorter than the first one, then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration. He did the same in the second rakʿa as he did in the first and then finished the prayer; by then the sun (eclipse) had cleared. He delivered the Khutba (sermon) and after praising and glorifying Allah he said, "The sun and the moon are two signs against the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see the eclipse, remember Allah and say Takbir, pray and give Sadaqa." The Prophet then said, "O followers of Muhammad! By Allah! There is none who has more ghaira (selfrespect) than Allah as He has forbidden that His slaves, male or female commit adultery (illegal sexual intercourse). O followers of Muhammad! By Allah! If you knew that which I know you would laugh little and weep much.

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ وَهْوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ وَهْوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ مِثْلَ مَا فَعَلَ فِي الأُولَى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدِ انْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَنْخَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ وَكَبِّرُوا وَصَلُّوا وَتَصَدَّقُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللَّهِ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَغْيَرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ أَنْ يَزْنِيَ عَبْدُهُ أَوْ تَزْنِيَ أَمَتُهُ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلاً وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا

(the wife of the Prophet ﷺ In the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ the sun eclipsed and he went to the Mosque and the people aligned behind him. He said the Takbir (starting the prayer) and prolonged the recitation (from the Qur'an) and then said Takbir and performed a prolonged bowing; then he (lifted his head and) said, "Sami allahu liman hamidah" (Allah heard him who sent his praises to Him). He then did not prostrate but stood up and recited a prolonged recitation which was shorter than the first recitation. He again said Takbir and then bowed a prolonged bowing but shorter than the first one and then said, "Samiʿa l-lahu Lyman hamidah Rabbana walak-lhamd, (Allah heard him who sent his praises to Him. O our Sustainer! All the praises are for You)" and then prostrated and did the same in the second rakʿa; thus he completed four bowing and four prostrations. The sun (eclipse) had cleared before he finished the prayer. (After the prayer) he stood up, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or the life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see them make haste for the prayer." Narrated Az-Zuhri: I said to 'Urwa, "When the sun eclipsed at Medina your brother (ʿAbdullah bin Az-Zubair) offered only a two-rakʿat prayer like that of the morning (Fajr) prayer." 'Urwa replied, "Yes, for he missed the Prophet's tradition (concerning this matter)."

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَفَّ النَّاسُ وَرَاءَهُ فَكَبَّرَ فَاقْتَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَقَامَ وَلَمْ يَسْجُدْ وَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ وَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً وَهْوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَالَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الآخِرَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ فِي أَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللَّهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ هُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَكَانَ يُحَدِّثُ كَثِيرُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ يَوْمَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْتُ لِعُرْوَةَ إِنَّ أَخَاكَ يَوْمَ خَسَفَتْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِثْلَ الصُّبْحِ قَالَ أَجَلْ لأَنَّهُ أَخْطَأَ السُّنَّةَ

(the wife of the Prophet) On the day when the sun Khasafat (eclipsed) Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; he stood up and said Takbir and recited a prolonged recitation, then he performed a prolonged bowing, then he raised his head and said, "Samiʿa l-lahu Lyman Hamidah," and then remained standing and recited a prolonged recitation which was shorter than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first. Then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration and he did the same in the second rakʿa as in the first and then finished the prayer with Taslim. By that time the sun (eclipse) had cleared He addressed the people and said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse (Yakhsifan) because of the death or the life (i.e. birth) of someone. So when you see them make haste for the prayer."

أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَّى يَوْمَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ وَقَامَ كَمَا هُوَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً وَهْىَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً وَهْىَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سُجُودًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الآخِرَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ وَالْقَمَرِ إِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ

Once the sun eclipsed and Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for the prayer and recited a very long Sura and when bowed for a long while and then raised his head and started reciting another Sura. Then he bowed, and after finishing, he prostrated and did the same in the second rakʿa and then said, "These (lunar and solar eclipses) are two of the signs of Allah and if you see them, pray till the eclipse is over. No doubt, while standing at this place I saw everything promised to me by Allah and I saw (Paradise) and I wanted to pluck a bunch (of grapes) therefrom, at the time when you saw me stepping forward. No doubt, I saw Hell with its different parts destroying each other when you saw me retreating and in it I saw ʿAmr bin Luhai who started the tradition of freeing animals (set them free) in the name of idols."

عَائِشَةُ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَرَأَ سُورَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَفْتَحَ بِسُورَةٍ أُخْرَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ حَتَّى قَضَاهَا وَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يُفْرَجَ عَنْكُمْ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ وُعِدْتُهُ حَتَّى لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أُرِيدُ أَنْ آخُذَ قِطْفًا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي جَعَلْتُ أَتَقَدَّمُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ جَهَنَّمَ يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا عَمْرَو بْنَ لُحَىٍّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ

On the day of a solar eclipse, Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up (to offer the eclipse prayer). He recited Takbir, recited a long recitation (of Holy Verses), bowed a long bowing, and then he raised h is head saying. "Allah hears him who sends his praises to Him." Then he stayed standing, recited a long recitation again, but shorter than the former, bowed a long bowing, but shorter than the first, performed a long prostration and then performed the second rakʿa in the same way as he had done the first. By the time he had finished his prayer with Taslim, the solar eclipse had been over. Then he addressed the people referring to the solar and lunar eclipses saying, "These are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah, and they do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life. So, if you see them, hasten for the Prayer."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ وَقَامَ كَمَا هُوَ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً وَهْىَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً وَهْىَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سُجُودًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الآخِرَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ وَالْقَمَرِ إِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ

We went out to Khaibar in the company of the Prophet. While we were proceeding at night, a man from the group said to 'Amir, "O 'Amir! Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, so he got down and started reciting for the people poetry that kept pace with the camels' footsteps, saying:-- "O Allah! Without You we Would not have been guided On the right path Neither would be have given In charity, nor would We have prayed. So please forgive us, what we have committed (i.e. our defects); let all of us Be sacrificed for Your Cause And send Sakina (i.e. calmness) Upon us to make our feet firm When we meet our enemy, and If they will call us towards An unjust thing, We will refuse. The infidels have made a hue and Cry to ask others' help Against us." The Prophet ﷺ on that, asked, "Who is that (camel) driver (reciting poetry)?" The people said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Akwaʿ." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him." A man amongst the people said, "O Allah's Prophet! has (martyrdom) been granted to him. Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." Then we reached and besieged Khaibar till we were afflicted with severe hunger. Then Allah helped the Muslims conquer it (i.e. Khaibar). In the evening of the day of the conquest of the city, the Muslims made huge fires. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What are these fires? For cooking what, are you making the fire?" The people replied, "(For cooking) meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They (i.e. people) said, "The meat of donkeys." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Throw away the meat and break the pots!" Some man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the pots instead?" He said, "(Yes, you can do) that too." So when the army files were arranged in rows (for the clash), 'Amir's sword was short and he aimed at the leg of a Jew to strike it, but the sharp blade of the sword returned to him and injured his own knee, and that caused him to die. When they returned from the battle, Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me (in a sad mood). He took my hand and said, "What is bothering you?" I replied, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! The people say that the deeds of 'Amir are lost." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever says so, is mistaken, for 'Amir has got a double reward." The Prophet raised two fingers and added, "He (i.e. Amir) was a persevering struggler in the Cause of Allah and there are few 'Arabs who achieved the like of (good deeds) 'Amir had done."

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِلَى خَيْبَرَ فَسِرْنَا لَيْلاً فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ لِعَامِرٍ يَا عَامِرُ أَلاَ تُسْمِعُنَا مِنْ هُنَيْهَاتِكَ وَكَانَ عَامِرٌ رَجُلاً شَاعِرًا فَنَزَلَ يَحْدُو بِالْقَوْمِ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ لَوْلاَ أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلاَ تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلاَ صَلَّيْنَا فَاغْفِرْ فِدَاءً لَكَ مَا أَبْقَيْنَا وَثَبِّتِ الأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لاَقَيْنَا وَأَلْقِيَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا إِنَّا إِذَا صِيحَ بِنَا أَبَيْنَا وَبِالصِّيَاحِ عَوَّلُوا عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ هَذَا السَّائِقُ قَالُوا عَامِرُ بْنُ الأَكْوَعِ قَالَ يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَجَبَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ لَوْلاَ أَمْتَعْتَنَا بِهِ فَأَتَيْنَا خَيْبَرَ فَحَاصَرْنَاهُمْ حَتَّى أَصَابَتْنَا مَخْمَصَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ ثُمَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى فَتَحَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمَّا أَمْسَى النَّاسُ مَسَاءَ الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي فُتِحَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْقَدُوا نِيرَانًا كَثِيرَةً فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَا هَذِهِ النِّيرَانُ عَلَى أَىِّ شَىْءٍ تُوقِدُونَ قَالُوا عَلَى لَحْمٍ قَالَ عَلَى أَىِّ لَحْمٍ قَالُوا لَحْمِ حُمُرِ الإِنْسِيَّةِ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَهْرِيقُوهَا وَاكْسِرُوهَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوْ نُهَرِيقُهَا وَنَغْسِلُهَا قَالَ أَوْ ذَاكَ فَلَمَّا تَصَافَّ الْقَوْمُ كَانَ سَيْفُ عَامِرٍ قَصِيرًا فَتَنَاوَلَ بِهِ سَاقَ يَهُودِيٍّ لِيَضْرِبَهُ وَيَرْجِعُ ذُبَابُ سَيْفِهِ فَأَصَابَ عَيْنَ رُكْبَةِ عَامِرٍ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَفَلُوا قَالَ سَلَمَةُ رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهْوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِي قَالَ مَا لَكَ قُلْتُ لَهُ فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي زَعَمُوا أَنَّ عَامِرًا حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ كَذَبَ مَنْ قَالَهُ إِنَّ لَهُ لأَجْرَيْنِ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ إِنَّهُ لَجَاهِدٌ مُجَاهِدٌ قَلَّ عَرَبِيٌّ مَشَى بِهَا مِثْلَهُ حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمٌ قَالَ نَشَأَ بِهَا

We went out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Khaibar and we travelled during the night. A man amongst the people said to 'Amir bin Al-Aqwa', "Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, and so he got down and started (chanting Huda) reciting for the people, poetry that keep pace with the camel's foot steps, saying, "O Allah! Without You we would not have been guided on the right path, neither would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. So please forgive us what we have committed. Let all of us be sacrificed for Your cause and when we meet our enemy, make our feet firm and bestow peace and calmness on us and if they (our enemy) will call us towards an unjust thing we will refuse. The infidels have made a hue and cry to ask others help against us. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who is that driver (of the camels)?" They said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Aqwa."' He said, "May Allah bestow His mercy on him." A man among the people said, Has Martyrdom been granted to him, O Allah's Prophet! Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." We reached (the people of) Khaibar and besieged them till we were stricken with severe hunger but Allah helped the Muslims conquer Khaibar. In the evening of its conquest the people made many fires. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What are those fires? For what are you making fires?" They said, "For cooking meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They said, "Donkeys' meat." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Throw away the meat and break the cooking pots." A man said, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the cooking pots?" He said, "You can do that too." When the army files aligned in rows (for the battle), 'Amir's sword was a short one, and while attacking a Jew with it in order to hit him, the sharp edge of the sword turned back and hit 'Amir's knee and caused him to die. When the Muslims returned (from the battle), Salama said, Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me pale and said, 'What is wrong with you?"' I said, "Let my parents be sacrificed for you! The people claim that all the deeds of Amir have been annulled." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who said so?" I replied, "So-and-so and soand- so and Usaid bin Al-Hudair Al-Ansari said, 'Whoever says so is telling a lie. Verily, 'Amir will have double reward."' (While speaking) the Prophet ﷺ put two of his fingers together to indicate that, and added, "He was really a hard-working man and a Mujahid (devout fighter in Allah's Cause) and rarely have there lived in it (i.e., Medina or the battle-field) an "Arab like him."

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى خَيْبَرَ فَسِرْنَا لَيْلاً فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ لِعَامِرِ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ أَلاَ تُسْمِعُنَا مِنْ هُنَيْهَاتِكَ قَالَ وَكَانَ عَامِرٌ رَجُلاً شَاعِرًا فَنَزَلَ يَحْدُو بِالْقَوْمِ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ لَوْلاَ أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلاَ تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلاَ صَلَّيْنَا فَاغْفِرْ فِدَاءٌ لَكَ مَا اقْتَفَيْنَا وَثَبِّتِ الأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لاَقَيْنَا وَأَلْقِيَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا إِنَّا إِذَا صِيحَ بِنَا أَتَيْنَا وَبِالصِّيَاحِ عَوَّلُوا عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ هَذَا السَّائِقُ قَالُوا عَامِرُ بْنُ الأَكْوَعِ فَقَالَ يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَجَبَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَمْتَعْتَنَا بِهِ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَا خَيْبَرَ فَحَاصَرْنَاهُمْ حَتَّى أَصَابَتْنَا مَخْمَصَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ ثُمَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَتَحَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمَّا أَمْسَى النَّاسُ الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي فُتِحَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْقَدُوا نِيرَانًا كَثِيرَةً فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا هَذِهِ النِّيرَانُ عَلَى أَىِّ شَىْءٍ تُوقِدُونَ قَالُوا عَلَى لَحْمٍ قَالَ عَلَى أَىِّ لَحْمٍ قَالُوا عَلَى لَحْمِ حُمُرٍ إِنْسِيَّةٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَهْرِقُوهَا وَاكْسِرُوهَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوْ نُهَرِيقُهَا وَنَغْسِلُهَا قَالَ أَوْ ذَاكَ فَلَمَّا تَصَافَّ الْقَوْمُ كَانَ سَيْفُ عَامِرٍ فِيهِ قِصَرٌ فَتَنَاوَلَ بِهِ يَهُودِيًّا لِيَضْرِبَهُ وَيَرْجِعُ ذُبَابُ سَيْفِهِ فَأَصَابَ رُكْبَةَ عَامِرٍ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُ فَلَمَّا قَفَلُوا قَالَ سَلَمَةُ رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ شَاحِبًا فَقَالَ لِي مَا لَكَ فَقُلْتُ فِدًى لَكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي زَعَمُوا أَنَّ عَامِرًا حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَهُ قُلْتُ قَالَهُ فُلاَنٌ وَفُلاَنٌ وَفُلاَنٌ وَأُسَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُضَيْرِ الأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَذَبَ مَنْ قَالَهُ إِنَّ لَهُ لأَجْرَيْنِ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ إِنَّهُ لَجَاهِدٌ مُجَاهِدٌ قَلَّ عَرَبِيٌّ نَشَأَ بِهَا مِثْلَهُ

The sun eclipsed on one extremely hot day during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed along with his Companions. He prolonged his qiyam (standing posture in prayer) till they (his Companions) began to fall down. He then observed a long ruku'. He raised his head (and stood up for long) and then observed a long ruku'. He then raised (his head and stood up) for a long time and then made two prostrations. He then stood up and did like this and thus he observed four ruku's and four prostrations (in two rak'ahs) and then said: All these things were brought to me in which you will be made to enter. Paradise was brought to me till (I was so close to it) that if I (had intended) to pluck a bunch (of grapes) out of it. I would have got it, or he (the Holy Prophet) said: I intended to get a bunch (out of that) but my hand could not reach it. Hell was also brought to me and I saw in it a woman belonging to the tribe of Israel who was tormented for a cat whom she had tied, but did not give it food nor set it free to eat the creatures of the earth; and I saw Abu Thumama 'Amr b. Malik who was dragging his intestines in Hell. They (the Arabs) used to say that the sun and the moon do not eclipse but on the death of some great person; but (in reality) both these (the sun and the moon) are among the signs of Allah which are shown to you; so when there is an eclipse, observe prayer till it (the sun or the moon) brightens. This hadith has been narrated by Hisham with the same chain of transmitters except this" I saw a dark woman with a tail stature and loud voice," but he made no mention of" from among Bani Israel".

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي يَوْمٍ شَدِيدِ الْحَرِّ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِأَصْحَابِهِ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ حَتَّى جَعَلُوا يَخِرُّونَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَنَعَ نَحْوًا مِنْ ذَاكَ فَكَانَتْ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُ عُرِضَ عَلَىَّ كُلُّ شَىْءٍ تُولَجُونَهُ فَعُرِضَتْ عَلَىَّ الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ تَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا قِطْفًا أَخَذْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ تَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا قِطْفًا فَقَصُرَتْ يَدِي عَنْهُ وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَىَّ النَّارُ فَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا امْرَأَةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ تُعَذَّبُ فِي هِرَّةٍ لَهَا رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ وَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا ثُمَامَةَ عَمْرَو بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ وَإِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ إِلاَّ لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ وَإِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُرِيكُمُوهُمَا فَإِذَا خَسَفَا فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِيَ وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ أَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ عَنْ هِشَامٍ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَرَأَيْتُ فِي النَّارِ امْرَأَةً حِمْيَرِيَّةً سَوْدَاءَ طَوِيلَةً وَلَمْ يَقُلْ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ

till he reached near the women) He then moved forward and the people also moved forward along with him till he stood at his (original) place (of worship). He then completed the prayer as it was required to complete and the sun brightened and he said: O people! verily the sun and the moon are among the signs of Allah and they do not eclipse at the death of anyone among people (Abu Bakr said: On the death of any human being). So when you see anything like it (of the nature of eclipse), pray till it is bright. There is nothing which you have been promised (in the next world) but I have seen it in this prayer of mine. Hell was brought to me as you saw me moving back on account of fear lest its heat might affect me; and I saw the owner of the curved staff who dragged his intestines in the fire, and he used to steal (the belongings) of the pilgrims with his curved staff. If he (the owner of the staff) became aware, he would say: It got (accidentally) entangled in my curved staff, but if he was unaware of that, he would take that away. I also saw in it (in Hell) the owner of a cat whom she had tied and did not feed her nor set her free so that she could eat the creatures of the earth, till the cat died of starvation. Paradise was brought to me, and it was on that occasion that you saw me moving forward till I stood at my place (of worship). I stretched my hand as I wanted to catch hold of its fruits so that you may see them. Then I thought of not doing it. Nothing which you have been promised was there that I did not see in this prayer of mine.

انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ مَاتَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا انْكَسَفَتْ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ بِأَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ بَدَأَ فَكَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ ثُمَّ انْحَدَرَ بِالسُّجُودِ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ أَيْضًا ثَلاَثَ رَكَعَاتٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رَكْعَةٌ إِلاَّ الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا أَطْوَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا وَرُكُوعُهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ سُجُودِهِ ثُمَّ تَأَخَّرَ وَتَأَخَّرَتِ الصُّفُوفُ خَلْفَهُ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى النِّسَاءِ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَ وَتَقَدَّمَ النَّاسُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى قَامَ فِي مَقَامِهِ فَانْصَرَفَ حِينَ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ آضَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّهُمَا لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ لِمَوْتِ بَشَرٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِيَ مَا مِنْ شَىْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ إِلاَّ قَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي صَلاَتِي هَذِهِ لَقَدْ جِيءَ بِالنَّارِ وَذَلِكُمْ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُصِيبَنِي مِنْ لَفْحِهَا وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ كَانَ يَسْرِقُ الْحَاجَّ بِمِحْجَنِهِ فَإِنْ فُطِنَ لَهُ قَالَ إِنَّمَا تَعَلَّقَ بِمِحْجَنِي وَإِنْ غُفِلَ عَنْهُ ذَهَبَ بِهِ وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَةَ الْهِرَّةِ الَّتِي رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا ثُمَّ جِيءَ بِالْجَنَّةِ وَذَلِكُمْ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَقَدَّمْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ فِي مَقَامِي وَلَقَدْ مَدَدْتُ يَدِي وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَنَاوَلَ مِنْ ثَمَرِهَا لِتَنْظُرُوا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لاَ أَفْعَلَ فَمَا مِنْ شَىْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ إِلاَّ قَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي صَلاَتِي هَذِهِ

We marched upon Khaibar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We journeyed during the night. One of the people said to (my brother) 'Amir b. al-Akwa': Won't you recite to us some of your verses? Amir was a poet. So he began to chant his verses to urge the camels, reciting: O God, if Thou hadst not guided us We would have neither been guided rightly nor practised charity, Nor offered prayers. We wish to lay down our lives for Thee; so forgive Thou our lapses, And keep us steadfast when we encounter (our enemies). Bestow upon us peace and tranquillity. Behold, when with a cry they called upon us to help. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who is this driver (of the camels)? They said: It is 'Amir. He said: God will show mercy to him. A man said: Martyrdom is reserved for him. Messenger of Allah, would that you had allowed us to benefit ourselves from his life. (The narrator says): We reached Khaibar and besieged them, and (we continued the siege) until extreme hunger afflicted us. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Behold, God has conquered it for you. When it was evening of the day on which the city was conquered. the Muslims lit many fires. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What are these fires? And what are they cooking? They said: They are cooking meat. He asked. Which meat? They said: That of domestic asses. He said: Let them throw it away and break the pots (in which it is being cooked). A man said: Or should they throw it away and wash the pots? He said: They may do that. When the people drew themselves up in battle array 'Amir caught hold of his sword that was rather short He drove a Jew before him to strike him with it. (As he struck him), his sword recoiled and struck his own knee, and 'Amir died of the wound. When the people returned (after the conquest of Kliaibar) and he (Salama) had caught hold of my hand, and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that I was silent (and dejected) ; he said: What's the matter with thee? I said to him: My father and my mother be thy ransom, people presume that 'Amir's sacrifice has been in vain. He asked: Who has said that? I said: So and so and Usaid b. Hudair al-Ansari. He said: Who has said that has lied. For him (for 'Amir) there is a double reward. (He indicated this by putting two of his fingers together.) He was a devotee of God and a warrior fighting for His cause. There will be hardly any Arab who can fight as bravely as he did. Qutaiba has differed in a few words.

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى خَيْبَرَ فَتَسَيَّرْنَا لَيْلاً فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ لِعَامِرِ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ أَلاَ تُسْمِعُنَا مِنْ هُنَيْهَاتِكَ وَكَانَ عَامِرٌ رَجُلاً شَاعِرًا فَنَزَلَ يَحْدُو بِالْقَوْمِ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ لَوْلاَ أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلاَ تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلاَ صَلَّيْنَا فَاغْفِرْ فِدَاءً لَكَ مَا اقْتَفَيْنَا وَثَبِّتِ الأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لاَقَيْنَا وَأَلْقِيَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا إِنَّا إِذَا صِيحَ بِنَا أَتَيْنَا وَبِالصِّيَاحِ عَوَّلُوا عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ هَذَا السَّائِقُ قَالُوا عَامِرٌ قَالَ يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَجَبَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْلاَ أَمْتَعْتَنَا بِهِ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَا خَيْبَرَ فَحَصَرْنَاهُمْ حَتَّى أَصَابَتْنَا مَخْمَصَةٌ شَدِيدَةٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَتَحَهَا عَلَيْكُمْ قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَمْسَى النَّاسُ مَسَاءَ الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي فُتِحَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْقَدُوا نِيرَانًا كَثِيرَةً فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا هَذِهِ النِّيرَانُ عَلَى أَىِّ شَىْءٍ تُوقِدُونَ فَقَالُوا عَلَى لَحْمٍ قَالَ أَىُّ لَحْمٍ قَالُوا لَحْمُ حُمُرِ الإِنْسِيَّةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَهْرِيقُوهَا وَاكْسِرُوهَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَوْ يُهَرِيقُوهَا وَيَغْسِلُوهَا فَقَالَ أَوْ ذَاكَ قَالَ فَلَمَّا تَصَافَّ الْقَوْمُ كَانَ سَيْفُ عَامِرٍ فِيهِ قِصَرٌ فَتَنَاوَلَ بِهِ سَاقَ يَهُودِيٍّ لِيَضْرِبَهُ وَيَرْجِعُ ذُبَابُ سَيْفِهِ فَأَصَابَ رُكْبَةَ عَامِرٍ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَفَلُوا قَالَ سَلَمَةُ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِي قَالَ فَلَمَّا رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَاكِتًا قَالَ مَا لَكَ قُلْتُ لَهُ فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي زَعَمُوا أَنَّ عَامِرًا حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَهُ قُلْتُ فُلاَنٌ وَفُلاَنٌ وَأُسَيْدُ بْنُ حُضَيْرٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ كَذَبَ مَنْ قَالَهُ إِنَّ لَهُ لأَجْرَيْنِ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ إِنَّهُ لَجَاهِدٌ مُجَاهِدٌ قَلَّ عَرَبِيٌّ مَشَى بِهَا مِثْلَهُ وَخَالَفَ قُتَيْبَةُ مُحَمَّدًا فِي الْحَدِيثِ فِي حَرْفَيْنِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ ابْنِ عَبَّادٍ وَأَلْقِ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا

There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died. The people began to to say that there was an eclipse on account of the death of Ibrahim. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and led the people in prayer performing six bowings and four prostrations. he said: Allah is most great, and then recited from the Qur'an and prolonged the recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and recited from the Qur'an but it was less than the first (recitation). He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and then recited from the Quran for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. he then raised his head and then recited from the Qur'an for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. he then bowed nearly as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and went down for prostration. he made two prostrations. He then stood and made three bowings before prostrating himself, the preceding bowing being more lengthy than the following, but he bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then stepped back during the prayer and the rows (of the people) too stepped back along with him. Then he stepped forward and stood in his place, and the rows too stepped forward. he then finished the prayer and the sun had become bright. He said: O people, the sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs; they are not eclipsed on account of a man's death. So when you see anything of that nature, offer prayer until the sun becomes bright. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition.

كُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا كُسِفَتْ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ابْنِهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ فِي أَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ الْقِرَاءَةَ الثَّالِثَةَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَانْحَدَرَ لِلسُّجُودِ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثَلاَثَ رَكَعَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رَكْعَةٌ إِلاَّ الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا أَطْوَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا إِلاَّ أَنَّ رُكُوعَهُ نَحْوٌ مِنْ قِيَامِهِ قَالَ ثُمَّ تَأَخَّرَ فِي صَلاَتِهِ فَتَأَخَّرَتِ الصُّفُوفُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَ فَقَامَ فِي مَقَامِهِ وَتَقَدَّمَتِ الصُّفُوفُ فَقَضَى الصَّلاَةَ وَقَدْ طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ ﷻ لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ بَشَرٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِيَ وَسَاقَ بَقِيَّةَ الْحَدِيثِ

There was an eclipse of the sun during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺcame tot he mosque; he stood up and uttered the takbir (Allah is great); the people stood in rows behind him; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited from the Quran for a long time; then he uttered the takbir (Allah is most great) and performed bowing for a long time, then he raised his head and said: Allah listens to him who praises Him; our Lord, and to Thee be praise; then he stood up and recited from the Qur'an for a long time, but it was less than the first (recitation); he then bowed for a long time, but it was less than the first bowing; he then said, Allah listens to him who praises Him; our Lord, and to Thee be praise. he then did so in the second rak'ah. he thus completed four bowings and four prostrations. The sun had become bright before he departed.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ خُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَصَفَّ النَّاسُ وَرَاءَهُ فَاقْتَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَاقْتَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ

"The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He stood and said the takbir, and the people formed rows behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited for a long time, then he said the takbir and bowed for a long time, then he raised his head and said: Sami Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd. Then he stood and recited for a long time, but it was a shorter recitation than the first recitation, then he said the takbir and bowed but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he said: Sami Allahu liman hamidah, then he prostrated. In this manner, he bowed four times, and the eclipse ended before he had finished. Then he stood and addressed the people. He praised and glorified Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, as He deserves, then he said: The sun and moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT), Most High. They do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that (eclipsed) then pray until it ends. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: While I was standing just now I saw everything you have been promised. When you saw me moving forward, I wanted to take a cluster of fruit from Paradise. And I saw Hell; parts of it were consuming other parts when you saw me step backward. And I saw therein Ibn Luhayy, who was the first one to establish the Sa'ibah.'"

خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَصَفَّ النَّاسُ وَرَاءَهُ فَاقْتَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَاقْتَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللَّهِ ﷻ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يُفْرَجَ عَنْكُمْ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأَيْتُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ وُعِدْتُمْ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُمُونِي أَرَدْتُ أَنْ آخُذَ قِطْفًا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي جَعَلْتُ أَتَقَدَّمُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ جَهَنَّمَ يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا ابْنَ لُحَىٍّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ

'The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood for a long time, but it was shorter than the first standing, then he bowed for a long time but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he stood up, then he prostrated, then he did the same in the second rak'ah, and when he finished the eclipse had ended. Then he addressed the people; he praised and glorified Allah (SWT), then he said: The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT). They do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then call upon Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, and magnify Him, and give charity. Then he said: 'O Ummah of Muhammad! There is no one more jealous than Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, when his male or female slave commits zina. O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.'"

خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ وَهُو دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ ﷻ وَكَبِّرُوا وَتَصَدَّقُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَغْيَرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ﷻ أَنْ يَزْنِيَ عَبْدُهُ أَوْ تَزْنِيَ أَمَتُهُ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلاً وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا

"The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up to pray, and those who were with him also got up. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he raised his head and (then) prostrated for a long time. Then he raised his head and sat for a long time. Then he prostrated for a long time, then he raised his head and stood up, and he did in the second rak'ah the same as he had done in the first, standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting. He started blowing and weeping at the end of his prostration in the second rak'ah, saying: 'You did not tell me that You would do that while I was still among them; You d not tell me that You would do that while we are asking You for forgiveness.' Then he raised his head and the eclipse ended. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and addressed the people. He praised and glorified Allah then he said: "The sun and moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime. If you see either of them being eclipsed, then hasten to remember Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, Paradise was brought so near to me that if I had stretched out my hand, I could have taken some of its fruits. And Hell was brought so near to me that I tried to ward it off for fear it may overwhelm you. I saw therein a woman from Himyar who was being punished because of a cat she tied up, not leaving it free to eat of the vermin of the earth, nor feeding it or giving it water, until it died. I saw it biting her when she came and biting her backside when she went. And I saw the owner of the Sabtiyatain, the brother of Banu As-Da'da, being pushed with a two-pronged stick in the Fire. And I saw the owner of the stick with a crooked end, who used to steal from the Hajj pilgrims with that crooked stick, leaning on his stick in Hell and saying: 'I am the thief with the crooked stick.'"

قَالَ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَقَامَ الَّذِينَ مَعَهُ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَجَلَسَ فَأَطَالَ الْجُلُوسَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَامَ فَصَنَعَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى مِنَ الْقِيَامِ وَالرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ وَالْجُلُوسِ فَجَعَلَ يَنْفُخُ فِي آخِرِ سُجُودِهِ مِنَ الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ وَيَبْكِي وَيَقُولُ لَمْ تَعِدْنِي هَذَا وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ لَمْ تَعِدْنِي هَذَا وَنَحْنُ نَسْتَغْفِرُكَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ ﷻ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ كُسُوفَ أَحَدِهِمَا فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ﷻ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ أُدْنِيَتِ الْجَنَّةُ مِنِّي حَتَّى لَوْ بَسَطْتُ يَدِي لَتَعَاطَيْتُ مِنْ قُطُوفِهَا وَلَقَدْ أُدْنِيَتِ النَّارُ مِنِّي حَتَّى لَقَدْ جَعَلْتُ أَتَّقِيهَا خَشْيَةَ أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا امْرَأَةً مِنْ حِمْيَرَ تُعَذَّبُ فِي هِرَّةٍ رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ فَلاَ هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلاَ هِيَ سَقَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهَا تَنْهَشُهَا إِذَا أَقْبَلَتْ وَإِذَا وَلَّتْ تَنْهَشُ أَلْيَتَهَا وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ السِّبْتِيَّتَيْنِ أَخَا بَنِي الدَّعْدَاعِ يُدْفَعُ بِعَصًا ذَاتِ شُعْبَتَيْنِ فِي النَّارِ وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ الَّذِي كَانَ يَسْرِقُ الْحَاجَّ بِمِحْجَنِهِ مُتَّكِئًا عَلَى مِحْجَنِهِ فِي النَّارِ يَقُولُ أَنَا سَارِقُ الْمِحْجَنِ

"There was an eclipse of the sun and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and the people with him. He stood for long time reciting something like Surah Al-Baqarah, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated. Then he got up and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated, then he finished (his prayer) and the sun had been clear. He said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT) and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then remember Allah (SWT) the Mighty and Sublime.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we saw you stretching out your hand when you were standing, then we saw you moving backward. He said: 'I saw Paradise-or it was shown to me- and I reached out to a take a bunch of its fruits. If I ha taken it you would have eaten from it for as long as this world lasts. And I saw Hell and I have never seen anything like it, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.' They said: "Why, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: 'Because of their ingratitude.' It was said: 'Are they ungrateful to Allah?' He said: 'They are ungrateful to their husbands and they are ungrateful for kind treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees (one) bad thing from you, she will say: I have never seen anything good from you.'"

خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ مَعَهُ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلاً قَرَأَ نَحْوًا مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ قَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلاً وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلاً وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلاً وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ﷻ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَنَاوَلْتَ شَيْئًا فِي مَقَامِكَ هَذَا ثُمَّ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَكَعْكَعْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ أُرِيتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَتَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا عُنْقُودًا وَلَوْ أَخَذْتُهُ لأَكَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ مَا بَقِيَتِ الدُّنْيَا وَرَأَيْتُ النَّارَ فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ مَنْظَرًا قَطُّ وَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا النِّسَاءَ قَالُوا لِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ بِكُفْرِهِنَّ قِيلَ يَكْفُرْنَ بِاللَّهِ قَالَ يَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ وَيَكْفُرْنَ الإِحْسَانَ لَوْ أَحْسَنْتَ إِلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ الدَّهْرَ ثُمَّ رَأَتْ مِنْكَ شَيْئًا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْكَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ

"The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up and (remained standing) for a long time." (One of the narrators) Shu'bh said: "I think he said something similar concerning prostration."- "He started weeping and blowing during his prostration and said: 'Lord, You did not tell me that You would do that while I am asking You for forgiveness; You did not tell me that You would do that while I was still among them.' When he finished praying he said: "Paradise was shown to me, and if I had stretched forth my hand I could have taken some of its fruits. And Hell was shown to me, so I started blowing for fear that its heat might overwhelm you. I saw therein the thief who stole the two camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and I saw therein the brother of Banu As-Du'du; the thief who stole from the pilgrims, and when he was caught he said: The crooked stick did it; and I saw therein a tall black woman who was being punished because of a cat she tied up and did not feed or give it water, and she did not let it eat of the vermin of the earth, until it died. Then sun and the moon do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone, but they are two of the signs of Allah. If one of them becomes eclipsed'- or he said: 'if one of them does anything like that'- 'then hasten to remember Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.'"

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ فِي السُّجُودِ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ وَجَعَلَ يَبْكِي فِي سُجُودِهِ وَيَنْفُخُ وَيَقُولُ رَبِّ لَمْ تَعِدْنِي هَذَا وَأَنَا أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لَمْ تَعِدْنِي هَذَا وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَالَ عُرِضَتْ عَلَىَّ الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ مَدَدْتُ يَدِي تَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْ قُطُوفِهَا وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَىَّ النَّارُ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْفُخُ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَغْشَاكُمْ حَرُّهَا وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا سَارِقَ بَدَنَتَىْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا أَخَا بَنِي دُعْدُعٍ سَارِقَ الْحَجِيجِ فَإِذَا فُطِنَ لَهُ قَالَ هَذَا عَمَلُ الْمِحْجَنِ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا امْرَأَةً طَوِيلَةً سَوْدَاءَ تُعَذَّبُ فِي هِرَّةٍ رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ وَإِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا انْكَسَفَتْ إِحْدَاهُمَا أَوْ قَالَ فَعَلَ أَحَدُهُمَا شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ﷻ

"There was an eclipse of the sun and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a man to call out: As-salatu jami'ah (prayer is about to begin in congregation). The people gathered and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in prayer. He said the takbir, then he recited at length. Then he said the takbir and bowed for a long time, as long as he had recited or longer. Then he raised his head and said: Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him) Then he recited at length, but it was shorter than the first time, then he said the takbir and bowed for a long time, but it was shorter than the first time. Then he raised his head and said: 'Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him). Then he said the takbir and prostrated for a long time, as long as he had bowed or longer. Then he said the takbir and raised his head, then he said the takbir and prostrated. Then he said the takbir and stood up, and recited for a long time that was shorter than the first time. Then he said the takbir and bowed for a long time that was shorter than the first time. Then he raised his head and said: Sami' Allahu liman hamidah. (Allah hears those who praise Him). Then he recited for a long time that was shorter than the first recitation in the second standing. Then he said the takbir and bowed for a long time that was shorter than the first time. Then he raised his head and said: Sami Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him). Then he said the takbir and prostrated for a long time that was shorter than the first time. Then he recited the tashahhud, then he said the taslim. Then he stood before them and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: 'The sun and the moon do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone, but they are two of the signs of Allah (SWT). Whichever of them becomes eclipsed, turn to Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, and pray.'"

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجُلاً فَنَادَى أَنَّ الصَّلاَةَ جَامِعَةً فَاجْتَمَعَ النَّاسُ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَكَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً مِثْلَ قِيَامِهِ أَوْ أَطْوَلَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَسَجَدَ سُجُودًا طَوِيلاً مِثْلَ رُكُوعِهِ أَوْ أَطْوَلَ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَقَامَ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً وَهِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةَ الأُولَى فِي الْقِيَامِ الثَّانِي ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَسَجَدَ أَدْنَى مِنْ سُجُودِهِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ تَشَهَّدَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ فَقَامَ فِيهِمْ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَنْخَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَأَيُّهُمَا خُسِفَ بِهِ أَوْ بِأَحَدِهِمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ ﷻ بِذِكْرِ الصَّلاَةِ

“The sun was eclipsed during the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the mosque and stood and said the Takbir, and the people formed rows behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited for a long time, then he said the Takbir and bowed for a long time. Then he raised his head and said: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, Rabban was lakal-hamd.’ Then he stood and recited for a long time, but shorter than the first recitation. Then he said the Takbir and bowed for a long time, but less than the first bowing. Then he said: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd.’ Then he did the same in the next Rak’ah, and he completed four Rak’ah and four sets of prostration, and the eclipse ended before he finished. Then he stood and addressed the people. He praised Allah as He deserves to be praised, then he said: ‘The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then seek help in prayer.’”

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ فَصَفَّ النَّاسُ وَرَاءَهُ فَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلاً هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللَّهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ

"There was an eclipse of the sun and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and the people with him. He stood for long time reciting something like Surah Al-Baqarah, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated. Then he got up and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated, then he finished (his prayer) and the sun had been clear. He said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT) and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then remember Allah (SWT) the Mighty and Sublime.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we saw you stretching out your hand when you were standing, then we saw you moving backward. He said: 'I saw Paradise-or it was shown to me- and I reached out to a take a bunch of its fruits. If I ha taken it you would have eaten from it for as long as this world lasts. And I saw Hell and I have never seen anything like it, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.' They said: "Why, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: 'Because of their ingratitude.' It was said: 'Are they ungrateful to Allah?' He said: 'They are ungrateful to their husbands and they are ungrateful for kind treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees (one) bad thing from you, she will say: I have never seen anything good from you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1493)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ مَعَهُ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا قَالَ نَحْوًا مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ قَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللهَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَنَاوَلْتَ شَيْئًا فِي مَقَامِكَ هَذَا ثُمَّ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَكَعْكَعْتَ قَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ أُرِيتُ الْجَنَّةَ وَلَمْ يَشُكَّ إِسْحَاقُ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَتَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا عُنْقُودًا وَلَوْ أَخَذْتُهُ لَأَكَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ مَا بَقِيَتِ الدُّنْيَا وَرَأَيْتُ النَّارَ فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ مَنْظَرًا أَفْظَعَ وَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا النِّسَاءَ قَالُوا لِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ بِكُفْرِهِنَّ قَالَ أَيَكْفُرْنَ بِاللهِ ﷻ؟ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنْ يَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ وَيَكْفُرْنَ الْإِحْسَانَ لَوْ أَحْسَنْتَ إِلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ الدَّهْرَ كُلَّهُ ثُمَّ رَأَتْ مِنْكَ شَيْئًا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْكَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ

[AI] The sun became eclipsed during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and he stood up for prayer, and we stood up with him. He prolonged the standing until we thought that he was not going to bow down (in rukū'). Then he bowed down (in rukū'), and hardly raised his head. Then he prostrated and hardly raised his head. Then he sat down and hardly prostrated. Then he prostrated again and hardly raised his head. Then he performed in the second unit of prayer, just like he did in the first unit. He blew into the ground and wept while he was prostrating in the second unit of prayer, and he said, "My Lord, why do you punish them and I am among them? My Lord, why do you punish us while we seek your forgiveness?" Then he raised his head while the sun appeared and he completed his prayer. Then he praised and glorified Allah and said, "O people, surely the sun and the moon are two signs from the signs of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. So when one of them becomes eclipsed, seek refuge in the mosques. By the One in whose hand is my soul, Paradise was shown to me until if I had wanted, I could have plucked some of its branches, and Hellfire was shown to me until I became afraid that it might envelope you. And I saw in it a woman who was being punished for a cat that she had tied and did not feed or give to drink, nor did she allow it to eat from the vermin of the earth. Whenever it approached, she would torment it, and whenever it turned away, she would torment it. And I saw in it a man from the Banū Dādāʿ who was being tormented and I saw the owner of the mill reclining over fire onto his millstone, and he used to steal from the hājjāj with his millstone, and when they became aware, he would say, 'I am not the one who stole from you, rather it is my millstone that has been stealing.'"

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ وَقُمْنَا مَعَهُ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِرَاكِعٍ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَسْجُدُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَسْجُدُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ كَمَا فَعَلَ فِي الْأُولَى وَجَعَلَ يَنْفُخُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَيَبْكِي وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ وَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ رَبِّ لِمَ تُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ؟ رَبِّ لِمَ تُعَذِّبُنَا وَنَحْنُ نَسْتَغْفِرُكَ؟ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ وَقَضَى صَلَاتَهُ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ ﷻ فَإِذَا كَسَفَ أَحَدُهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الْمَسَاجِدِ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ أَشَاءُ لَتَعَاطَيْتُ بَعْضَ أَغْصَانِهَا وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ النَّارُ حَتَّى إِنِّي لَأُطْفِئُهَا خَشْيَةَ أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا امْرَأَةً مِنْ حِمْيَرَ سَوْدَاءَ طُوَالَةً تُعَذَّبُ بِهِرَّةٍ لَهَا تَرْبِطُهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا وَلَا تَدَعُهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ كُلَّمَا أَقْبَلَتْ نَهَشَتْهَا وَكُلَّمَا أَدْبَرَتْ نَهَشَتْهَا وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا أَخَا بَنِي دَعْدَعٍ وَرَأَيْتُ صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ مُتَّكِئًا فِي النَّارِ عَلَى مِحْجَنِهِ كَانَ يَسْرِقُ الْحَاجَّ بِمِحْجَنِهِفَإِذَا عَلِمُوا بِهِ قَالَ لَسْتُ أَنَا أَسْرِقُكُمْ إِنَّمَا تَعَلَّقَ بِمِحْجَنِي

There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died. The people began to to say that there was an eclipse on account of the death of Ibrahim. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and led the people in prayer performing six bowings and four prostrations. he said: Allah is most great, and then recited from the Qur'an and prolonged the recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and recited from the Qur'an but it was less than the first (recitation). He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and then recited from the Quran for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. he then raised his head and then recited from the Qur'an for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. he then bowed nearly as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and went down for prostration. he made two prostrations. He then stood and made three bowings before prostrating himself, the preceding bowing being more lengthy than the following, but he bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then stepped back during the prayer and the rows (of the people) too stepped back along with him. Then he stepped forward and stood in his place, and the rows too stepped forward. he then finished the prayer and the sun had become bright. He said: O people, the sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs; they are not eclipsed on account of a man's death. So when you see anything of that nature, offer prayer until the sun becomes bright. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1178)

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا كَسَفَتِ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ فِي أَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَانْحَدَرَ لِلسُّجُودِ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رَكْعَةٌ إِلَّا الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا أَطْوَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا إِلَّا أَنَّ رُكُوعَهُ نَحْوٌ

أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَصَفَّ النَّاسُ وَرَاءَهُ فَكَبَّرَ وَاقْتَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَقَامَ وَلَمْ يَسْجُدْ فَاقْتَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ وَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ ﷻ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّمَا هُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ ﷻ لَا يُخَسَفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا لِلصَّلَاةِ وَكَانَ كَثِيرُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ مِثْلَ مَا حَدَّثَ عُرْوَةُ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لِعُرْوَةَ فَإِنَّ أَخَاكَ يَوْمَ كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِثْلَ صَلَاةِالصُّبْحِ فَقَالَ أَجَلْ إِنَّهُ أَخْطَأَ السُّنَّةَ

[AI] The sun set during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , and I heard a commotion from the people saying, "It is a sign!" At that moment, I rushed with a piece of cloth to Zubair until I entered upon Aisha and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who were standing in prayer for the people. I said to Aisha, "What is happening to the people?" She pointed with her hand towards the sky and said, "I prayed with them while the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ finished his first prostration, then he stood up for a long time until I saw some people washing themselves with water. Then he made a long prostration, and then stood up without prostrating for a long time, which was shorter than the first standing. Then he made another long prostration and then he finished his prayer and greeted, while the sun was shining brightly. Then he ascended the pulpit and said, 'O people, the sun and the moon are two signs from the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone. So, when you see that, hasten to pray, give charity, and remember Allah. O people, there is nothing that I have not seen or presented before you in this place. I have shown you what will happen in your graves, where you will be asked, 'What were you saying and what were you worshipping?' So, if you say, 'I do not know,' the people will say something and you will say it, and they will do something and you will do it. It will be said, 'You lived your life in doubt,' and you will stay in this position in the Fire. But if you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, it will be said, 'You lived your life in certainty,' and you will stay in this position in Paradise. And I have seen fifty or seventy thousand people entering Paradise in the image of the full moon.' Then a man stood up and said, 'Pray to Allah that He makes me one of them.' He said, 'O Allah, make him one of them.' O people, you will not ask me about anything until it is revealed to me except that I will inform you about it.' Then a man stood up and asked, 'Who is my father?' He replied, 'Your father is so and so, who is attributed to you.'

خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمِعْتُ رَجَّةَ النَّاسِ وَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ آيَةٌ وَنَحْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي فَازِعٍ فَخَرَجْتُ مُتَلَفِّعَةً بِقَطِيفَةٍ لِلزُّبَيْرِ حَتَّى دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي لِلنَّاسِ فَقُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ مَا لِلنَّاسِ؟ فَأَشَارَتْ بِيَدِهَا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ قَالَتْ فَصَلَّيْتُ مَعَهُمْ وَقَدْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَغَ مِنْ سَجْدَتِهِ الْأُولَى قَالَتْ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ بَعْضَ مَنْ يُصَلِّي يَنْتَضِحُ بِالْمَاءِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ قَامَ وَلَمْ يَسْجُدْ قِيَاما طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ رُكُوعِهِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ رَقِيَ الْمِنْبَرَ َفقَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَإِلَى الصَّدَقَةِ وَإِلَى ذِكْرِ اللهِ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَبْقَ شَيْءٌ لَمْ أَكُنْ رَأَيْتُهُ إِلَّا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا وَقَدْ أُرِيتُكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي قُبُورِكُمْ يُسْأَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُ؟ وَمَا كُنْتَ تَعْبُدُ؟ فَإِنْ قَالَ لَا أَدْرِي رَأَيْتُ النَّاسَيَقُولُونَ شَيْئًا فَقُلْتُهُ وَيَصْنَعُونَ شَيْئًا فَصَنَعْتُهُ قِيلَ لَهُ أَجَلْ عَلَى الشَّكِّ عِشْتَ وَعَلَيْهِ مِتَّ هَذَا مَقْعَدُكَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَإِنْ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ قِيلَ عَلَى الْيَقِينِ عِشْتَ وَعَلَيْهِ مِتَّ هَذَا مَقْعَدُكَ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَقَدْ أُرِيْتُ خَمْسِينَ أَوْ سَبْعِينَ أَلْفًا يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ فِي مِثْلِ صُورَةِ الْقَمَرِ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ قَالَ اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ مِنْهُمْ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَسْأَلُونِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى أَنْزِلَ إِلَّا أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَبِي؟ قَالَ أَبُوكَ فُلَانٌ الَّذِي كَانَ يُنْسَبُ إِلَيْهِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in prayer. He stood, and did so for a long time. Then he went into ruku, and made the ruku long. Then he stood again, and did so for a long time, though not as long as the first time. Then he went into ruku, and made the ruku long, though not as long as thefirst time. Then he rose, and went down into sajda. He then did the same in the second raka, and by the time he had finished the sun had appeared. He then gave a khutba to the people, in which he praised Allah and then said, 'The sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs. They do not eclipse for anyone's death nor for anyone's life. When you see an eclipse, call on Allah and say, "Allah is greater" and give sadaqa.' Then he said, 'O community of Muhammad! ByAllah, there is no-one more jealous than Allah of a male or female slave of his who commits adultery. O community of Muhammad! By Allah, if you knew what I knew, you would laugh little and weep much'."

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الآخِرَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لاَ يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ وَكَبِّرُوا وَتَصَدَّقُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللَّهِ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَغْيَرَ مِنَ اللَّهِ أَنْ يَزْنِيَ عَبْدُهُ أَوْ تَزْنِيَ أَمَتُهُ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلاً وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا

[AI] Sumurah, while I was a young boy from the Ansar, we were throwing objects for ourselves during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. When the sun reached the height of two or three lances above the horizon, it became darkened and shone like a firefly. One of us said to his companion, "Let's go to the mosque, and I swear by Allah that this matter of the sun will be mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his Ummah." So we went to the mosque, and we found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing among the people. He came forward and led us in prayer, the longest prayer he ever prayed with us, in which we could not even hear his voice. Then he performed ruku (bowing) with us, the longest ruku he ever performed with us, in which we could not hear his voice. Then he performed sujud (prostration) with us, the longest sujud he ever performed with us, in which we could not hear his voice. Then he did the same in the second raka'ah, and when the sun reappeared during the second raka'ah, he sat down. Then he said, "O people, indeed I am only a human being and the Messenger of Allah. But I remind you of Allah, if you know that I have not conveyed any of the messages of my Lord, which you informed me of, until I convey them as they should be conveyed. And if you know that I have conveyed the messages of my Lord, which you informed me of." Then the people stood up and said, "We bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of your Lord and advised your Ummah, and you have fulfilled what is upon you." Then they fell silent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for what follows, there are men who claim that the eclipse of this sun, the eclipse of this moon, and the disappearance of these stars from their stations cause the death of great men from the people of the earth. Indeed, they are liars, but they are signs from the signs of Allah by which He tests His servants. Let the one among them who will repent come forward." By Allah, since I started praying, I have not met any of you in your current worldly and hereafter conditions. And by Allah, the Hour will not be established until thirty liars will appear, the last of them being the lame Dajjal. He will have a deformed eye like the eye of Abi Yahya, a sheikh from the Ansar. And when he appears, he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes in him, verifies his claim, and follows him, then none of his past deeds will benefit him. And whoever denies him and rejects him, then none of his past deeds will harm him. Indeed, he will appear on the entire earth except for the Haram and Bayt al-Maqdis. And indeed, he will besiege the believers in Bayt al-Maqdis, and they will shake violently. Then Jesus, the son of Mary, will descend among them, and Allah will defeat him and his soldiers, to the extent that the black stone will call out, "O believer! This is a disbeliever hiding behind me, so come and kill him." He said, "But that will not happen until you see matters becoming widespread and severe. You will ask each other, 'Did your Prophet ﷺ mention anything about this?' And until mountains move from their places and continue to move until the seizing (of souls) comes. He pointed with his hand, and he said, "Then he delivered another sermon, in which he mentioned what he mentioned before and did not delay it or precede it."

سَمُرَةُ بَيْنَمَا أَنَا يَوْمًا وَغُلَامٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ نَرْمِي غَرَضًا لَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى قَدْرِ رُمْحَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٍ فِي عَيْنِ النَّاظِرِ مِنَ الْأُفُقِ اسْوَدَّتْ حَتَّى آضَتْ كَأَنَّهَا تَنُّومَةٌ فَقَالَ أَحَدُنَا لِصَاحِبِهِ انْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَوَاللَّهِ لَيُحْدِثَنَّ شَأْنُ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسِ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي أُمَّتِهِ حَدَثًا فَدَفَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَإِذَا هُوَ بَارِزٌ فَوَافَقْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ خَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ قَالَ فَتَقَدَّمَ وَصَلَّى بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا قَامَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ لَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتَهُ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا رَكَعَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ لَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتَهُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا سَجَدَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ لَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتَهُ قَالَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَوَافَقَ تَجَلِّي الشَّمْسِ جُلُوسَهُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ قَالَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَشَهِدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَشَهِدَ أَنَّهُ عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَأُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللَّهَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَصَّرْتُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ مِنٍ تَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي لَمَا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي حَتَّى أُبَلِّغَ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي كَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهَا أَنْ تُبَلَّغَ وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَدْ بَلَّغْتُ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي لَمَا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي» قَالَ فَقَامَ النَّاسُ فَقَالُوا نَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّكَ وَنَصَحْتَ لِأُمَّتِكَ وَقَضَيْتَ الَّذِي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ سَكَتُوا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رِجَالًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ كُسُوفَ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسِ وَكُسُوفَ هَذَا الْقَمَرِ وَزَوَالَ هَذِهِ النُّجُومِ عَنْ مَطَالِعِهَا لِمَوْتِ رِجَالٍ عُظَمَاءَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وإِنَّهُمْ كَذَبُوا وَلَكِنَّ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يَفْتِنُ بِهَا عِبَادَهُ لَيَنْظُرَ مَنْ يُحْدِثُ مِنْهُمْ تَوْبَةً وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ مُنْذُ قُمْتُ أُصَلِّي مَا أَنْتُمْ لَاقُونَ فِي دُنْيَاكُمْ وَآخِرَتِكُمْ وَإِنَّهُ وَاللَّهِ لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ ثَلَاثُونَ كَذَّابًا آخِرُهُمُ الْأَعْوَرُ الدَّجَّالُ مَمْسُوحُ الْعَيْنِ الْيُسْرَى كَأَنَّهَا عَيْنُ أَبِي يَحْيَى لِشَيْخٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَإِنَّهُ مَتَى خَرَجَ فَإِنَّهُ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ اللَّهُ فَمَنْ آمَنَ بِهِ وَصَدَّقَهُ وَاتَّبَعَهُ فَلَيْسَ يَنْفَعُهُ صَالِحٌ مِنْ عَمَلٍ سَلَفَ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ بِهِ وَكَذَّبَهُ فَلَيْسَ يُعَاقَبُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ سَلَفَ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَظْهَرُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ كُلِّهَا إِلَّا الْحَرَمَ وَبَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ وَإِنَّهُ يَحْصُرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ فَيَتَزْلَزَلُونَ زِلْزَالًا شَدِيدًا فَيُصْبِحُ فِيهِمْ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ فَيَهْزِمُهُ اللَّهُ وَجُنُودَهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَجْدَمَ الْحَائِطِ وَأَصْلَ الشَّجَرِ لَيُنَادِي بِالْمُؤْمِنِ هَذَا كَافِرٌ يَسْتَتِرُ بِي فَتَعَالَ اقْتُلْهُ قَالَ فَلَنْ يَكُونَ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى تَرَوْنَ أُمُورًا يَتَفَاقَمُ شَأْنُهَا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ تَسَاءَلُونَ بَيْنَكُمْ هَلْ كَانَ نَبِيِّكُمْ ﷺ ذَكَرَ لَكُمْ مِنْهَا ذِكْرًا وَحَتَّى تَزُولَ جِبَالٌ عَنْ مَرَاسِيهَا ثُمَّ عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ الْقَبْضُ وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ قَالَ ثُمَّ شَهِدَ خُطْبَةً أُخْرَى قَالَ فَذَكَرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مَا قَدَّمَهَا وَلَا أَخَّرَهَا

"There was an eclipse of the sun and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and the people with him. He stood for long time reciting something like Surah Al-Baqarah, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated. Then he got up and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated, then he finished (his prayer) and the sun had been clear. He said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT) and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then remember Allah (SWT) the Mighty and Sublime.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we saw you stretching out your hand when you were standing, then we saw you moving backward. He said: 'I saw Paradise-or it was shown to me- and I reached out to a take a bunch of its fruits. If I ha taken it you would have eaten from it for as long as this world lasts. And I saw Hell and I have never seen anything like it, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.' They said: "Why, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: 'Because of their ingratitude.' It was said: 'Are they ungrateful to Allah?' He said: 'They are ungrateful to their husbands and they are ungrateful for kind treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees (one) bad thing from you, she will say: I have never seen anything good from you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1493)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ مَعَهُ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا نَحْوًا مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَنَاوَلْتَ شَيْئًا فِي مَقَامِكَ هَذَا ثُمَّ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَكَعْكَعْتَ قَالَ «إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ أُرِيتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَتَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا عُنْقُودًا وَلَوْ أَخَذْتُهُ لَأَكَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ مَا بَقِيَتِ الدُّنْيَا وَرَأَيْتُ النَّارَ فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ مَنْظَرًا قَطُّ وَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا النِّسَاءَ» قَالُوا بِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «بِكُفْرِهِنَّ» قِيلَ يَكْفُرْنَ بِاللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «يَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ وَيَكْفُرْنَ الْإِحْسَانَ لَوْ أَحْسَنْتَ إِلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ الدَّهْرَ ثُمَّ رَأَتْ مِنْكَ شَيْئًا قَالَتْ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْكَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ»

[AI] The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to pray. He continued to pray until he almost couldn't perform the rukoo' (bowing position), then he performed rukoo' until he almost couldn't raise his head, and then he raised his head. He began to supplicate, cry, and say, "O Lord, did You not promise me not to punish them while I am among them? Did You not promise me not to punish them while we seek Your forgiveness?" After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished praying, the sun became visible again. He stood up, praised and glorified Allah, and said, "Verily, the sun and the moon are two signs from the signs of Allah. So, when they are eclipsed, rush to the remembrance of Allah." Then he said, "Paradise was shown to me, and if I wished, I could have plucked a cluster from it. Hellfire was shown to me, and I became so cautious of it that I feared it would envelop you. So, I would say, 'Didn't You promise me not to punish them while I am among them? O Lord, didn't You promise me not to punish them while they seek Your forgiveness?'" He said, "Then I saw a pitch-black female camel tied. She was neither fed nor watered, and she was not allowed to eat from the vegetation on the ground. So, every time she turned towards it, she was burned by fire. I also saw a man being pushed in the Fire with two staffs having hooks at the tips. I also saw a man reclining on his elbow in the Fire."

انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي حَتَّى لَمْ يَكَدْ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ حَتَّى لَمْ يَكَدْ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَجَعَلَ يَتَضَرَّعُ وَيَبْكِي وَيَقُولُ «رَبِّ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لَا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لَا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَنَحْنُ نَسْتَغْفِرُكَ» فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ انْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ «إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا انْكَسَفَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «لَقَدْ عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ شِئْتُ لَتَعَاطَيْتُ قِطْفًا مِنْ قُطُوفِهَا وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ النَّارُ حَتَّى جَعَلْتُ أَتَّقِيهَا حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ فَجَعَلْتُ أَقُولُ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لَا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ رَبِّ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لَا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرِونَكَ» قَالَ «فَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا الْحَمَيرِيَةَ السَّوْدَاءَ صَاحِبَةَ الْهِرَّةِ كَانَتْ حَبَسَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا وَلَمْ تَتْرُكْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ فَرَأَيْتُهَا كُلَّمَا أَدْبَرَتْ نُهِشَتْ فِي النَّارِ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ بَدَنَتَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخَا دَعْدَعٍ يُدْفَعُ فِي النَّارِ بِقَضِيبَيْنِ ذِي شُعْبَتَيْنِ وَرَأَيْتُ صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ فِي النَّارِ عَلَى مِحْجَنِهِ مُتَوَكِّئًا»

[AI] The sun set during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for prayer. He recited a long Surah, then bowed down for a moment, then raised his head and recited another Surah. When he finished reciting the second Surah, he bowed down again, then prostrated. He then stood up for the second unit of prayer, recited another Surah, and stood for a shorter time than the first unit. Then he bowed down and his bowing was shorter than the first. He then prostrated. When he raised his head from prostration, he said, "There is nothing that you are promised but I have seen it in my place here. And I have seen myself taking a bunch of grapes from Paradise when you saw me moving forward. And I have seen Hellfire breaking apart when you saw me staying back. And I have seen 'Amr bin Luhy (an idolater in Makkah) the one who will be dragging his intestines."

انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَقَرَأَ بِسُورَةِ طَوِيلَةٍ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِنْ قِيَامِهِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَافْتَتَحَ بِسُورَةٍ أُخْرَى حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْهَا رَكَعَ ثَانِيَةً ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ إِلَى الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ فَقَرَأَ أَيْضًا بِسُورَةٍ وَقَامَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَكَانَ رُكُوعُهُ دُونَ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَلَمَّا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ السُّجُودِ قَالَ «مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ إِلَّا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أُرِيدُ أَنْ آخُذَ قِطْفًا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي أَتَقَدَّمُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ جَهَنَّمَ يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ وَرَأَيْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ لُحَيٍّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ»

There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died. The people began to to say that there was an eclipse on account of the death of Ibrahim. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and led the people in prayer performing six bowings and four prostrations. he said: Allah is most great, and then recited from the Qur'an and prolonged the recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and recited from the Qur'an but it was less than the first (recitation). He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and then recited from the Quran for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. he then raised his head and then recited from the Qur'an for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. he then bowed nearly as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and went down for prostration. he made two prostrations. He then stood and made three bowings before prostrating himself, the preceding bowing being more lengthy than the following, but he bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then stepped back during the prayer and the rows (of the people) too stepped back along with him. Then he stepped forward and stood in his place, and the rows too stepped forward. he then finished the prayer and the sun had become bright. He said: O people, the sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs; they are not eclipsed on account of a man's death. So when you see anything of that nature, offer prayer until the sun becomes bright. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1178)

انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمَ مَاتَ فِيهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَامَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رَكْعَةٌ إِلَّا الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا أَطْوَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا إِلَّا أَنَّ رُكُوعَهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ قِيَامِهِ ثُمَّ تَأَخَّرَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَتَأَخَّرَتِ الصُّفُوفُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَ فَتَقَدَّمْتُ الصُّفُوفُ مَعَهُ فَقَضَى الصَّلَاةَ وَقَدْ أَضَاءَتِ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ بَشَرٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَنْجَلِيَ»

'The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood for a long time, but it was shorter than the first standing, then he bowed for a long time but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he stood up, then he prostrated, then he did the same in the second rak'ah, and when he finished the eclipse had ended. Then he addressed the people; he praised and glorified Allah (SWT), then he said: The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT). They do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then call upon Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, and magnify Him, and give charity. Then he said: 'O Ummah of Muhammad! There is no one more jealous than Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, when his male or female slave commits zina. O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1474)

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ وَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ مَا فَعَلَ فِي الْأُولَى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدِ انْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرِ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ وَكَبِّرُوا وَتَصَدَّقُوا» وَقَالَ «يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ وَاللَّهِ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَغْيَرُ مِنَ اللَّهِ أَنْ يَزْنِي عَبْدُهُ أَوْ تَزْنِي أُمَّتُهُ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا»

"There was an eclipse of the sun and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and the people with him. He stood for long time reciting something like Surah Al-Baqarah, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated. Then he got up and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he raised (his head) and stood for a long time, which was shorter than the first time. Then he bowed for a long time, which was shorter than the first time, then he prostrated, then he finished (his prayer) and the sun had been clear. He said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT) and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that then remember Allah (SWT) the Mighty and Sublime.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we saw you stretching out your hand when you were standing, then we saw you moving backward. He said: 'I saw Paradise-or it was shown to me- and I reached out to a take a bunch of its fruits. If I ha taken it you would have eaten from it for as long as this world lasts. And I saw Hell and I have never seen anything like it, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.' They said: "Why, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: 'Because of their ingratitude.' It was said: 'Are they ungrateful to Allah?' He said: 'They are ungrateful to their husbands and they are ungrateful for kind treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees (one) bad thing from you, she will say: I have never seen anything good from you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1493)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ مَعَهُ فَقَامَ طَوِيلًا نَحْوًا مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوْلِ وَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوْلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَنَاوَلْتَ شَيْئًا فِي مَقَامِكَ هَذَا ثُمَّ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَكَعْكَعْتَ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي رَأَيْتَ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ أُرِيتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَتَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا عُنْقُودًا وَلَوْ أَخَذْتُهُ لَأَكَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ مَا بَقِيَتِ الدُّنْيَا وَرَأَيْتُ النَّارَ فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ مَنْظَرًا قَطُّ وَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا النِّسَاءَ» قَالُوا بِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «بِكُفْرِهِنَّ» قِيلَ يَكْفُرْنَ بِاللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «يَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ وَيَكْفُرْنَ الْإِحْسَانَ لَوْ أَحْسَنْتَ إِلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ الدَّهْرَ ثُمَّ رَأَتْ مِنْكَ شَيْئًا قَالَتْ وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْكَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ»

[AI] He once stood as a preacher and mentioned a hadith in his sermon about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Samurah, one of the Ansar, said, "There was a young boy with me, and we used to throw arrows at a target during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When the sun rose, it would shine in the eyes of the onlooker like the tip of a spear or two spears turned black. One of us said to his companion, 'Let's go to the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and, by Allah, the sun will rise today and mention a hadith to the Messenger of Allah in his ummah.' So, we went towards the mosque until we encountered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he came out and straightened his back and prayed. He stood with us as long as he ever stood in prayer, to the point where we could not hear his voice. Then he stood up and did the same in the second raka'ah. Then he sat, and as he sat, the sunlight cleared. He gave the Salam and left, and he praised Allah and glorified Him, and testified that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Then he said, 'O people, I am only human, a Messenger who warns you about Allah. If you know that I have omitted anything in conveying the message of my Lord, then let me know.' The people said, 'We bear witness that you have conveyed the message of your Lord, advised your ummah, and fulfilled what was upon you.' Then he said, 'As for what follows, there are people who claim that when an eclipse occurs for the sun and moon, and when stars are removed from their positions due to the death of great men from the people of the earth, they are lying. Rather, these are the signs of Allah by which He frightens His servants. Thus, let those of them who will repent, as by Allah, I have seen things that you have not encountered in your worldly affairs nor in your Hereafter since I stood praying. And by Allah, the Hour will not be established until thirty liars will emerge, one of whom is the one-eyed False Messiah (Dajjal), whose eye is like the raised lump of flesh on the side of 'Abi Talha, the blind man, between him and the room of 'A'ishah. It will appear that he (Dajjal) is Allah, so whoever believes in him, confirms his belief in him, and follows him, then his good deeds will not benefit him from the account of his past deeds. And he (Dajjal) will appear on the entire earth except for the Haram and the blessed land of Al-Masjid al-Aqsa. And truly, he will drive the Muslims towards Al-Masjid al-Aqsa, where they will be besieged intensely."

قَامَ يَوْمًا خَطِيبًا فَذَكَرَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ حَدِيثًا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ سَمُرَةُ بَيْنَا أَنَا وَغُلَامٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ نَرْمِي غَرَضًا لَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى إِذَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَكَانَتْ فِي عَيْنِ النَّاظِرِ قِيدَ رُمْحٍ أَوْ رُمْحَيْنِ اسْوَدَّتْ فَقَالَ أَحَدُنَا لِصَاحِبِهِ انْطَلَقَ بِنَا إِلَى مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَوَاللَّهِ لَتُحْدِثَنَّ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسُ الْيَوْمَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ فِي أُمَّتِهِ حَدِيثًا قَالَ فَدَفَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَوَافَقْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ خَرَجَ فَاسْتَقَامَ فَصَلَّى فَقَامَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا قَامَ فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ لَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَفَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ بِالرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَوَافَقَ جُلُوسَهُ تَجَلِّي الشَّمْسِ فَسَلَّمَ وَانْصَرَفَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَشَهِدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ رَسُولٌ أُذَكِّرُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَصَّرْتُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ بِتَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي لَمَّا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي» فَقَالَ النَّاسُ نَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّكِ وَنَصَحْتَ لِأُمَّتِكَ وَقَضَيْتَ الَّذِي عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رِجَالًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ كُسُوفَ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسِ وَكُسُوفَ هَذَا الْقَمَرِ وَزَوَالِ هَذِهِ النُّجُومِ عَنْ مَطَالِعِهَا لِمَوْتِ رِجَالٍ عُظَمَاءَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّهُمْ كَذَبُوا وَلَكِنَّهَا آيَاتُ اللَّهِ يَعْتَبِرُ بِهَا عِبَادُهُ لَيَنْظُرَ مَنْ يُحَدِّثُ مِنْهُمْ تَوْبَةً وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ مَا أَنْتُمْ لَاقُونَ فِي أَمْرِ دُنْيَاكُمْ وَأَخِرَتِكُمْ مُذْ قُمْتُ أُصَلِّي وَإِنَّهُ وَاللَّهِ مَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ ثَلَاثُونَ كَذَّابًا أَحَدُهُمُ الْأَعْوَرُ الدَّجَّالُ مَمْسُوحُ عَيْنِ الْيُسْرَى كَأَنَّهَا عَيْنُ أَبِي تِحْيَى شَيْخٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ خَشَبَةٌ وَإِنَّهُ مَتَى يَخْرُجُ فَإِنَّهُ سَوْفَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ اللَّهُ فَمَنْ آمَنَ بِهِ وَصَدَّقَهُ وَاتَّبَعَهُ فَلَيْسَ يَنْفَعُهُ عَمِلٌ صَالِحٌ مِنْ عَمِلٍ سَلَفَ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَظْهَرُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ كُلِّهَا غَيْرَ الْحَرَمِ وَبَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ وَإِنَّهُ يَسُوقُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ فَيُحَاصَرُونَ حِصَارًا شَدِيدًا»

[AI] One of us said to his companion, "Let us go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about the solar eclipse and its significance for his Ummah." So we went to the mosque, and it was crowded with people. We coincided with the Prophet ﷺ coming out and leading the people in prayer, while we prayed after him. He stood for a long time, longer than any prayer we had ever witnessed from him. Then he prostrated for a long time, longer than any prostration we had ever witnessed from him. Then he repeated the same in the second unit of the prayer. And it coincided with the sun becoming clear again. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then finished the prayer, praised and glorified Allah, testified that there is no god but Allah, and that he is His servant and Messenger. Then he said, "O people, I am a human being, a Messenger. I remind you of Allah, if you know that I have omitted anything from conveying the messages of my Lord to you, have I conveyed the messages of my Lord as they should be conveyed?" They said, "We bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of your Lord and given sincere advice to your Ummah, and fulfilled what was required of you." Then he said, "Now, some people claim that the eclipse of the sun and moon or the disappearance of the stars from their positions are signs of the death of great men on earth. But they are lying. Rather, these are signs from the signs of Allah, by which He warns His servants, so that those among them who seek repentance may repent. I have seen this while standing in my place of prayer, which you cannot reach in your worldly and hereafter lives. The Hour will not be established until thirty liars appear, the last of whom is the one-eyed Dajjal. He will have the mark of the eye of Abu Tayyibah, a blind man from the Ansar, between his eyes and Aisha's room. The believers will be confined in the Sacred House and will be severely pressed, and they will be displaced greatly." Al-Aswad bin Qays said, "I thought he meant that Isa ibn Maryam ﷺ would emerge among them and Allah would defeat him and his army. Even if the wall adjoins a stump or the branch of a tree, it will say to the believer, 'This is a disbeliever who has concealed himself behind me, so come and kill him.' But it will not be as you think until you see things happening among you that will cause disputes and you will say to each other, 'Did your Prophet mention anything about this?' And even the mountains will move from their positions, and then comes the time of taking away." Ibn al-Mubarik said, "Meaning death."

أَحَدُنَا لِصَاحِبِهِ اذْهَبْ بِنَا لَيُحَدِّثَنَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ فِي شَأْنِ أُمَّتِهِ حَدِيثًا فَانْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَإِذَا الْمَسْجِدُ مَلْآنُ بِأَزَزٍ وَوَافَقَ ذَلِكَ خُرُوجَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَاسْتَقْدَمَ وَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ وَنَحْنُ بَعْدَهُ فَقَامَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا قَامَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ لَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ رَكَعَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا رَكَعَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ لَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ سَجَدَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ السُّجُودِ مَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَوَافَقَ تَجَلِّيَ الشَّمْسِ قُعُودُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَشَهِدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَشَهِدَ أَنَّهُ عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ رَسُولٌ أُذَكِّرُكُمْ بِاللهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَصَّرْتُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ مِنْ تَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي لَمَا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي فَبَلَّغْتُ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي كَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهَا أَنْ تُبَلَّغَ وَإِنْ كُنْتُ بَلَّغْتُ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّي لَمَا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي؟» فَقَالُوا نَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّكَ وَنَصَحْتَ لِأُمَّتِكَ وَقَضَيْتَ الَّذِي عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رِجَالًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ كُسُوفَ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسِ وَهَذَا الْقَمَرِ أَوْ زَوَالَ النُّجُومِ عَنْ مَطَالِعِهَا لِمَوْتِ رِجَالٍ مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ كَذَبُوا وَلَكِنْ هُوَ آيَاتٌ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ يَعْتَبِرُ بِهَا عِبَادُهُ لِيَنْظُرَ مَنْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُ مِنْهُمْ تَوْبَةً فَقَدْ أُرِيتُ فِي مَقَامِي وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي مَا أَنْتُمْ لَاقُونَ فِي دُنْيَاكُمْ وَآخِرَتِكُمْ وَلَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ ثَلَاثُونَ كَذَّابًا آخِرُهُمُ الْأَعْوَرُ الدَّجَّالُ مَمْسُوحُ الْعَيْنِ الْيُسْرَى كَأَنَّهَا عَيْنُ أَبِي تِحْيَى شَيْخٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ وَإِنَّهُ مَتَى خَرَجَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ اللهُ فَمَنْ آمَنَ بِهِ وَصَدَّقَهُ لَمْ يَنْفَعْهُ صَالِحٌ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ سَلَفَ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ بِهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِهِ لَمْ يُعَاقَبْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ عَمَلٍ سَلَفَ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَظْهَرُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ كُلِّهَا إِلَّا الْحَرَمَ وَبَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ وَإِنَّهُ سَيُحْصَرُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ حَصْرًا شَدِيدًا وَيُؤْزَلُونَ أَزْلًا شَدِيدًا» قَالَ الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ وَحَسِبْتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يُصْبِحُ فِيهِمْ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ ﷺ فَيَهْزِمُهُ اللهُ وَجُنُودَهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ جِذْمَ الْحَائِطِ وَغُصْنَ الشَّجَرِ لَيُنَادِي الْمُؤْمِنَ يَقُولُ هَذَا كَافِرٌ اسْتَتَرَ بِي تَعَالَ فَاقْتُلْهُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ ذَلِكَ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى تَرَوْنَ أَشْيَاءَ مِنْ شَأْنِكُمْ يَتَفَاقَمُ فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ حَتَّى تَسْأَلُونَ بَيْنَكُمْ هَلْ ذَكَرَ نَبِيُّكُمْ مِنْ هَذَا ذِكْرًا؟ وَحَتَّى تَزُولَ الْجِبَالُ عَنْ مَرَاتِبِهَا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ الْقَبْضُ الْقَبْضُ قَالَ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ أَيِ الْمَوْتُ

[AI] Narrated by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ : While I was with a young boy from the Ansar, we were throwing pebbles at a target during the time of the Prophet ﷺ . Suddenly, the sun rose and a black spear or two spears from the horizon covered it until it illuminated as if it were a lantern. One of us said to his companion, "Let us go to the Prophet's ﷺ mosque, and by Allah, he will tell him about this today, and he will inform his nation about it." So, we went to the mosque and met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he came out to the people. He led us in prayer, and it was the longest prayer we had ever witnessed from him. Then, he made a prolonged bow, the longest we had ever seen from him in prayer. Then, he prostrated for a long time, the longest we had ever seen from him in prayer. After that, he stood up and prayed another rak'ah just like the first one. Then, he sat down, and the brightness of the sun disappeared. He greeted us and left, praising Allah and mentioning Him. Then, he said, "O people, I remind you of Allah. If you know that I have conveyed the message of my Lord, then bear witness. If you know that I have shortened the delivery of the message of my Lord, then bear witness." They said, "We bear witness that you have conveyed the message of your Lord, advised your ummah, and fulfilled your duty." Then, he said, "As for what follows, there are men who claim that the eclipse of the sun, the eclipse of the moon, and the disappearance of stars from their places are due to the death of great men from the people of the earth, but they are lying. Rather, these are the signs of Allah by which He warns His servants, so that those among them who have deviated may repent. By Allah, I have seen things concerning your worldly affairs and your hereafter from the time I started praying until now. And by Allah, the Hour will not be established until thirty liars appear, the last of them being the one-eyed Antichrist. He will be wiping his eye, as if it were the eye of my cousin, 'Abdullah bin Abi Quhafah, between whose house and the room of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them both) there is a distance. Indeed, when he appears, he will claim to be Allah. Whoever believes in him and affirms his claim, will not benefit from any good deeds he had done before. Whoever disbelieves in him and fights against him, will not be inflicted with any punishment for his previous deeds. Indeed, he will appear on the earth, except for the Haram (Makkah) and the holy land (Jerusalem). He will lead people to Jerusalem, where they will be surrounded to an extreme extent." He said, "I thought that he mentioned that 'Isa ibn Maryam would appear among them in the morning and would kill him and his army until even the corners and pillars call out, 'O Muslim! O believer! This is a disbeliever hiding behind me, so come and kill him.' However, this will not occur until you witness severe and great matters occurring among yourselves, and you will argue among yourselves, 'Did your Prophet ﷺ mention that to you?'" Then, he said, "Afterward, the approaching of death."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا أَنَا وَغُلَامٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ نَرْمِي غَرَضَيْنِ لَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَكَانَتْ فِي عَيْنِ النَّاظِرِ قَيْدَ رُمْحٍ أَوْ رُمْحَيْنِ مِنَ الْأُفُقِ فَاسْوَدَّتْ حَتَّى أَضَاءَتْ كَأَنَّهَا تَنُّومَةٌ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ انْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى مَسْجِدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَوَاللهِ لَيُحَدِّثَنَّ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسِ الْيَوْمَ فِي أُمَّتِهِ حَدِيثًا قَالَ فَدَفَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَوَافَقْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ خَرَجَ إِلَى النَّاسِ فَاسْتَقْدَمَ فَصَلَّى فَقَامَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا قَامَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ مَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ رَكَعَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا رَكَعَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ مَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ سَجَدَ بِنَا كَأَطْوَلِ مَا سَجَدَ بِنَا فِي صَلَاةٍ قَطُّ مَا نَسْمَعُ لَهُ صَوْتًا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى بِنَا رَكْعَةً أُخْرَى مِثْلَهَا ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَوَافَقَ جُلُوسُهُ تَجَلِّيَ الشَّمْسِ فَسَلَّمَ وَانْصَرَفَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أُذَكِّرُكُمُ اللهَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَدْ بَلَّغْتُ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّي لَمَا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَصَّرْتُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ مِنْ تَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَةِ رَبِّي لَمَا أَخْبَرْتُمُونِي» قَالُوا نَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّكَ وَنَصَحْتَ لِأُمَّتِكَ وَقَضَيْتَ الَّذِي عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رِجَالًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ كُسُوفَ هَذِهِ الشَّمْسِ وخُسُوفَ هَذَا الْقَمَرِ وَزَوَالَ النُّجُومِ عَنْ مَطَالِعِهَا لِمَوْتِ رِجَالٍ عُظَمَاءَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ كَذَبُوا وَلَكِنْ إِنَّمَا هِيَ آيَاتُ اللهِ يَعْتَبِرُ بِهَا عِبَادُهُ لِيَنْظُرَ مَنْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُ مِنْهُمْ تَوْبَةً وَإِنِّي وَاللهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ مَا أَنْتُمْ لَاقُونَ مِنْ أَمْرِ دُنْيَاكُمْ وَآخِرَتِكُمْ مُنْذُ قُمْتُ أُصَلِّي وَإِنَّهُ وَاللهِ لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ ثَلَاثُونَ كَذَّابًا آخِرُهُمُ الْأَعْوَرُ الدَّجَّالُ مَمْسُوحُ الْعَيْنِ الْيُسْرَى كَأَنَّهَا عَيْنُ أَبِي يِحْيَى شَيْخٍ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَإِنَّهُ مَتَى يَخْرُجْ فَسَوْفَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ اللهُ فَمَنْ آمَنَ بِهِ وَصَدَّقَهُ فَلَيْسَ يَنْفَعُهُ صَالِحٌ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ سَلَفَ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ بِهِ وَقَاتَلَهُ فَلَيْسَ يُعَاقَبُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ سَلَفَ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَظْهَرُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ كُلِّهَا غَيْرَ الْحَرَمِ وَبَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ وَإِنَّهُ يَسُوقُ النَّاسَ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ فَيُحْصَرُونَ حَصْرًا شَدِيدًا» قَالَ وَأَحْسِبُهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَيُصْبِحُ فِيهِمْ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ فَيَقْتُلُهُ وَجُنُودَهُ حَتَّى إِنَّ الْحَجَرَ أَوْ جِذْمَ الْحَائِطِ لَيُنَادِي يَا مُسْلِمُ أَوْ يَا مُؤْمِنُ هَذَا كَافِرٌ مُسْتَتِرٌ بِي فَتَعَالَ فَاقْتُلْهُ وَلَنْ يَكُونَ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى تَرَوْا أُمُورًا عِظَامًا يَتَفَاقَمُ شَأْنُهَا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ وَتَسَاءَلُونَ بَيْنَكُمْ هَلْ كَانَ نَبِيُّكُمْ ﷺ ذَكَرَ لَكُمْ مِنْهَا ذِكْرًا؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ «عَلَى إِثْرِ ذَلِكَ الْقَبْضُ»

[AI] We set out in the month of Hajj that we had pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , at Al-Aqaba, with the polytheists of our people. With us was Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur, our elder, and our leader. When we reached the outskirts of the desert, he said, "O people, you know that I have seen a vision, and I don't know if you agree with me on it or not." We asked, "What is it, O Abu Al-Bashar?" He said, "I saw that I was praying towards this structure (the Kaaba) instead of facing my back to it." We said, "No, by Allah, you should not do that, for we have heard that our Prophet, ﷺ , only prays towards the Sham (the Levant)." He said, "By Allah, I will always pray towards it." Whenever the time for prayer came, he would face the Kaaba, and we faced the Sham, until we reached Makkah. Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur said to me, "O cousin, come with us to the Messenger of Allah so that we may ask him about what we have done on this journey. For I have found something different in myself compared to all of you." So we went to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and we met a man near Al-Abtah, and we said to him, "Show us the way to Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Muttalib." He asked, "Do you know him if you see him?" We said, "No, by Allah, we don't know him, nor have we seen the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ." He asked, "Do you know Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib?" We answered, "Yes, we know him, for we used to trade with him." He said, "When you enter the mosque, look for Al-Abbas, for he is the man with him." So we entered the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and Al-Abbas were sitting on one side of the mosque. We greeted them and sat down. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , asked, "Do you know these two men?" When they hesitated, he said, "This is Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur, the leader of his people, and this is Ka'b bin Malik." Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen a vision on this journey that I wanted to ask you about, so that you may tell me what I should do." The Prophet, ﷺ , asked, "What is it?" He replied, "I saw that I should not turn my back on this structure (the Kaaba) while praying, so I prayed towards it." The Prophet, ﷺ , said, "You were on the right direction, and if you had been patient with it, it would have been enough for you." Then he returned to the direction the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to face (towards the Sham), and his family kept saying that he died facing it, but we know better. He went back to the direction the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to face, and he prayed with us towards the Sham.

خَرَجْنَا فِي الْحِجَّةِ الَّتِي بَايَعْنَا بِهَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَقَبَةَ مَعَ مُشْرِكِي قَوْمِنَا وَمَعَنَا الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ كَبِيرُنَا وَسَيِّدُنَا حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِظَاهِرِ الْبَيْدَاءِ قَالَ يَا هَؤُلَاءِ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَأَيًا مَا أَدْرِي أَتُوَافِقُونِي عَلَيْهِ أَمْ لَا؟ قُلْنَا مَا هُوَ يَا أَبَا الْبَشَرِ؟ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أُصَلِّي إِلَى هَذِهِ الْبَنِيَّةِ وَلَا أَجْعَلُهَا مِنِّي بِظَهْرٍ قُلْنَا لَا وَاللهِ لَا تَفْعَلُ مَا بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ نَبِيَّنَا ﷺ لَا يُصَلِّي إِلَّا إِلَى الشَّامِ قَالَ فَإِنِّي وَاللهِ لِمُصَلٍّ إِلَيْهَا وَكَانَ إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ تَوَجَّهَ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ وَتَوَجَّهْنَا إِلَى الشَّامِ حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ لِي الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي انْطَلَقْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى نَسْأَلَهُ عَمَّا صَنَعْنَا فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا فَلَقَدْ وَجَدْتُ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْهُ بِخِلَافِكُمْ إِيَّايَ فَخَرَجْنَا نَسْأَلُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَقِيَنَا رَجُلٌ بِالْأَبْطَحِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ تَدُلُّنَا عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَ وَهَلْ تَعْرِفَانِهِ إِذَا رَأْيُتَمَاهُ؟ قُلْنَا لَا وَاللهِ مَا نَعْرِفُهُ وَلَمْ نَكُنْ رَأَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَعْرَفَانِ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ وَقَدْ كُنَّا نَعْرِفُهُ كَانَ يَخْتَلِفُ إِلَيْنَا بِالتِّجَارَةِ قَالَ فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُمَا الْمَسْجِدَ فَانْظُرَا الْعَبَّاسَ فَهُوَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي مَعَهُ فَدَخَلْنَا الْمَسْجِدَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالْعَبَّاسُ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ جَالِسَانِ فَسَلَّمْنَا وَجَلَسْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ تَعْرِفُ هَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ؟» فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ قَالَ نَعَمْ هَذَا الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ سَيِّدُ قَوْمِهِ وَهَذَا كَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَوَاللهِ مَا أَنْسَى قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ «الشَّاعِرَ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ رَأَيْتُ فِي سَفَرِي هَذَا رَأَيًا قَدْ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْهُ لَتُخْبِرَنِّي عَمَّا صَنَعْتُ فِيهِ قَالَ «وَمَا ذَلِكَ؟» قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَنْ لَا أَجْعَلَ هَذِهِ الْبَنِيَّةَ مِنِّي بِظَهْرٍ فَصَلَّيْتُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ كُنْتَ عَلَى قِبْلَةٍ لَوْ صَبَرْتَ إِلَيْهَا» فَرَجَعَ إِلَى قِبْلَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَهْلُهُ يَقُولُونَ قَدْ مَاتَ عَلَيْهَا وَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ قَدْ رَجَعَ إِلَى قِبْلَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ فَصَلَّى مَعَنَا إِلَى الشَّامِ

[AI] We set out in the Hajj in which we pledged our allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Al-Aqaba, along with the polytheists of our people. Al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur, our elder, and our leader were with us. When we were in the desert plain, he said, "O people, do you know that I have seen something, but I do not know if you will agree with me or not?" We said, "What is it, O Abu Al-Bashar?" He said, "I saw that I should pray towards this structure and not make it behind me." We said, "No, by Allah, do not do what we have heard that our Prophet ﷺ does not pray except towards Sham (Greater Syria)." He said, "By Allah, I will pray towards it." And whenever the time for prayer approached, he would face the Ka'bah and we would face Sham until we reached Makkah. Al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur said to me, "O nephew, come with us to the Messenger of Allah so that we can ask him about what we have done in this journey. I found something in myself that differed from you, so we went to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We met a man in Al-Abtah and said to him, "Guide us to Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib." He said, "Do you know him if you see him?" We said, "No, by Allah, we do not know him, and we have not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Do you know Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib?" We said, "Yes, and we know him. He used to come to us for trade." He said, "When you enter the mosque, look at Abbas. He is the man with him." So we entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abbas were sitting in one corner of the mosque. We greeted him and sat down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you know these two men?" When we were nervous, he said, "Yes, this is Al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur, the leader of his people, and this is Ka'b ibn Malik." Al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen something in this journey that I wanted to ask you about, so you can inform me of what I have done." He said, "What is it?" He said, "I saw that I should not make this structure behind me, so I prayed towards it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You were upon the Qiblah (direction of prayer) that if you endured it." So he returned to the Qiblah of the Messenger of Allah and his family while we were saying that he died on it, and we knew better about it. He returned to the Qiblah of the Messenger of Allah and prayed with us towards Sham.

Then, Bara' bin Ma'rur said to me, "O son of my brother, come with us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that we may ask him about what we have done in this journey. For I found in myself something different from what you all found in yourselves." So we went to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and we met a man at the door. We said to him, "Show us the way to Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Muttalib." He asked, "Do you recognize him if you see him?" We said, "No, by Allah, we do not recognize him, nor have we seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He asked, "Do you recognize Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib?" We said, "Yes, we do. We know him as he used to trade with us." Then he said, "When you enter the mosque, look for Al-Abbas. He is the man accompanying him." So we entered the mosque and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Al-Abbas sitting on one side of the mosque. We greeted them and sat down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you know these two men?" When we hesitated, he said, "This is Bara' bin Ma'rur, the leader of his people, and this is Ka'b bin Malik." Then Al-Abbas said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen a vision during this journey and I would like to ask you about it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is it?" He replied, "I saw that I should not make this structure (Al-Quds) part of me during prayer. So I prayed towards it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You were on the right path, and if only you could have endured it." Then he turned towards the Qibla of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his family, as they say, "He died upon it." And we know best about it. He returned to the Qibla of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and prayed with us towards Ash-Sham.

So, we went to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we met a man at the entrance of At-Tan'im. We asked him to direct us to Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Muttalib. He asked, "Do you recognize him if you see him?" We replied, "No, by Allah, we do not recognize him, nor have we seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He then asked, "Do you recognize Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib?" We replied, "Yes, we do. We are familiar with him as he used to visit us for trade." He said, "When you enter the Masjid, look for Al-Abbas, for he is the man accompanying him." So, we entered the Masjid and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Al-Abbas sitting to the side. We greeted them and sat down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you recognize these two men?" When he paused, we replied, "Yes, this is Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur, the leader of his people, and this is Ka'b bin Malik." Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen something in this journey that I wanted to ask you about, so you could inform me of what I have done." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is it?" Al-Bara' replied, "I saw that I should not take this structure as my Qibla, so I prayed towards it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You were upon a previous Qibla, if you had been patient and continued to pray towards it." So, the Prophet ﷺ returned to the previous Qibla and his family and companions were saying that he had died upon it, and we were more aware of him. He returned to the previous Qibla and performed the prayer with us facing Ash-Sham.

خَرَجْنَا فِي الْحِجَّةِ الَّتِي بَايَعْنَا بِهَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَقَبَةَ مَعَ مُشْرِكِي قَوْمِنَا وَمَعَنَا الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ كَبِيرُنَا وَسَيِّدُنَا حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِظَاهِرِ الْبَيْدَاءِ قَالَ يَا هَؤُلَاءِ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَأَيًا مَا أَدْرِي أَتُوَافِقُونِي عَلَيْهِ أَمْ لَا؟ قُلْنَا مَا هُوَ يَا أَبَا الْبَشَرِ؟ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أُصَلِّي إِلَى هَذِهِ الْبَنِيَّةِ وَلَا أَجْعَلُهَا مِنِّي بِظَهْرٍ قُلْنَا لَا وَاللهِ لَا تَفْعَلُ مَا بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ نَبِيَّنَا ﷺ لَا يُصَلِّي إِلَّا إِلَى الشَّامِ قَالَ فَإِنِّي وَاللهِ لِمُصَلٍّ إِلَيْهَا وَكَانَ إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ تَوَجَّهَ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ وَتَوَجَّهْنَا إِلَى الشَّامِ حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ لِي الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي انْطَلَقْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى نَسْأَلَهُ عَمَّا صَنَعْنَا فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا فَلَقَدْ وَجَدْتُ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْهُ بِخِلَافِكُمْ إِيَّايَ فَخَرَجْنَا نَسْأَلُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَقِيَنَا رَجُلٌ بِالْأَبْطَحِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ تَدُلُّنَا عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَ وَهَلْ تَعْرِفَانِهِ إِذَا رَأْيُتَمَاهُ؟ قُلْنَا لَا وَاللهِ مَا نَعْرِفُهُ وَلَمْ نَكُنْ رَأَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَعْرَفَانِ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ وَقَدْ كُنَّا نَعْرِفُهُ كَانَ يَخْتَلِفُ إِلَيْنَا بِالتِّجَارَةِ قَالَ فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُمَا الْمَسْجِدَ فَانْظُرَا الْعَبَّاسَ فَهُوَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي مَعَهُ فَدَخَلْنَا الْمَسْجِدَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالْعَبَّاسُ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ جَالِسَانِ فَسَلَّمْنَا وَجَلَسْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ تَعْرِفُ هَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ؟» فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ قَالَ نَعَمْ هَذَا الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ سَيِّدُ قَوْمِهِ وَهَذَا كَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَوَاللهِ مَا أَنْسَى قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ «الشَّاعِرَ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ مَعْرُورٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ رَأَيْتُ فِي سَفَرِي هَذَا رَأَيًا قَدْ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْهُ لَتُخْبِرَنِّي عَمَّا صَنَعْتُ فِيهِ قَالَ «وَمَا ذَلِكَ؟» قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَنْ لَا أَجْعَلَ هَذِهِ الْبَنِيَّةَ مِنِّي بِظَهْرٍ فَصَلَّيْتُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ كُنْتَ عَلَى قِبْلَةٍ لَوْ صَبَرْتَ إِلَيْهَا» فَرَجَعَ إِلَى قِبْلَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَهْلُهُ يَقُولُونَ قَدْ مَاتَ عَلَيْهَا وَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ قَدْ رَجَعَ إِلَى قِبْلَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ فَصَلَّى مَعَنَا إِلَى الشَّامِ

till he reached near the women) He then moved forward and the people also moved forward along with him till he stood at his (original) place (of worship). He then completed the prayer as it was required to complete and the sun brightened and he said: O people! verily the sun and the moon are among the signs of Allah and they do not eclipse at the death of anyone among people (Abu Bakr said: On the death of any human being). So when you see anything like it (of the nature of eclipse), pray till it is bright. There is nothing which you have been promised (in the next world) but I have seen it in this prayer of mine. Hell was brought to me as you saw me moving back on account of fear lest its heat might affect me; and I saw the owner of the curved staff who dragged his intestines in the fire, and he used to steal (the belongings) of the pilgrims with his curved staff. If he (the owner of the staff) became aware, he would say: It got (accidentally) entangled in my curved staff, but if he was unaware of that, he would take that away. I also saw in it (in Hell) the owner of a cat whom she had tied and did not feed her nor set her free so that she could eat the creatures of the earth, till the cat died of starvation. Paradise was brought to me, and it was on that occasion that you saw me moving forward till I stood at my place (of worship). I stretched my hand as I wanted to catch hold of its fruits so that you may see them. Then I thought of not doing it. Nothing which you have been promised was there that I did not see in this prayer of mine. (Using translation from Muslim 904c)

انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ يَوْمَ مَاتَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا كُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ فِي أَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَانْحَدَرَ لِلسُّجُودِ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رَكْعَةٌ إِلَّا الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا أَطْوَلُ مِنَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا إِلَّا أَنَّ رُكُوعَهُ نَحْوٌ مِنْ قِيَامِهِ ثُمَّ تَأَخَّرَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ وَتَأَخَّرَتِ الصُّفُوفُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَ فَقَامَ فِي مَقَامِهِ وَتَقَدَّمَتِ الصُّفُوفُ فَقَضَى الصَّلَاةَ وَقَدْ طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ ﷻ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ بَشَرٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِي إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ إِلَّا قَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي صَلَاتِي هَذِهِ وَلَقَدْ جِيءَ بِالنَّارِ فَذَلِكَ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُصِيبَنِي مِنْ لَفْحِهَا حَتَّى قُلْتُ أَيْ رَبِّ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ كَانَ يَسْرِقُ الْحَاجَّ بِمِحْجَنِهِ فَإِنْ فُطِنَ بِهِ قَالَ إِنَّمَا تَعَلَّقَ بِمِحْجَنِي وَإِنْ غُفِلَ عَنْهُ ذَهَبَ بِهِ وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَةَ الْهِرَّةِ الَّتِي رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَتْرُكْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا وَجِيءَ بِالْجَنَّةِ فَذَلِكَ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَقَدَّمْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ فِي مَقَامِي فَمَدَدْتُ يَدِي وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَنَاوَلَ مِنْ ثَمَرِهَا لِتَنْظُرُوا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَفْعَلَ

"The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He stood and said the takbir, and the people formed rows behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited for a long time, then he said the takbir and bowed for a long time, then he raised his head and said: Sami Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd. Then he stood and recited for a long time, but it was a shorter recitation than the first recitation, then he said the takbir and bowed but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he said: Sami Allahu liman hamidah, then he prostrated. In this manner, he bowed four times, and the eclipse ended before he had finished. Then he stood and addressed the people. He praised and glorified Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, as He deserves, then he said: The sun and moon are two of the signs of Allah (SWT), Most High. They do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone. If you see that (eclipsed) then pray until it ends. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: While I was standing just now I saw everything you have been promised. When you saw me moving forward, I wanted to take a cluster of fruit from Paradise. And I saw Hell; parts of it were consuming other parts when you saw me step backward. And I saw therein Ibn Luhayy, who was the first one to establish the Sa'ibah.'" خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَصَفَّ النَّاسَ وَرَاءَهُ فَاقْتَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ «سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبِّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ» ثُمَّ قَامَ فَاقْتَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبِّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ» ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يُخْسَفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يُفْرَجَ عَنْكُمْ» وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «رَأَيْتُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ وُعِدْتُمْ ثُمَّ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُرِيدُ أَنْ آخُذَ قِطْفًا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي جَعَلْتُ أَتَقَدَّمُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ جَهَنَّمَ يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا ابْنَ لُحَيٍّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ»

Once the sun eclipsed and Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for the prayer and recited a very long Sura and when bowed for a long while and then raised his head and started reciting another Sura. Then he bowed, and after finishing, he prostrated and did the same in the second rakʿa and then said, "These (lunar and solar eclipses) are two of the signs of Allah and if you see them, pray till the eclipse is over. No doubt, while standing at this place I saw everything promised to me by Allah and I saw (Paradise) and I wanted to pluck a bunch (of grapes) therefrom, at the time when you saw me stepping forward. No doubt, I saw Hell with its different parts destroying each other when you saw me retreating and in it I saw ʿAmr bin Luhai who started the tradition of freeing animals (set them free) in the name of idols." ؓ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَرَأَ سُورَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَفْتَحَ سُورَةً أُخْرَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ حِينَ قَضَاهَا وَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تُفَرَّجَ عَنْكُمْ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ وُعِدْتُمْ حَتَّى لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أُرِيدُ أَنْ آخُذَ قِطْفًا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي جَعَلْتُ أَتَقَدَّمُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ جَهَنَّمَ يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا عَمْرَو بْنَ لُحَيٍّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ

The sun eclipsed in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ . Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the eclipse prayer and stood for a long period equal to the period in which one could recite Surat-al-Baqara. Then he bowed for a long time and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing, then bowed again for a long time but for a shorter period than the first; then he prostrated twice and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing; then he bowed for a long time which was shorter than the previous one, and then he raised his head and stood up for a long period which was shorter than the first standing, then he bowed for a long time which was shorter than the first bowing, and then prostrated (twice) and finished the prayer. By then, the sun (eclipse) had cleared. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They eclipse neither because of the death of somebody nor because of his life (i.e. birth). So when you see them, remember Allah." The people say, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We saw you taking something from your place and then we saw you retreating." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why is it so?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable) in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 1052)

انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى وَالنَّاسُ مَعَهُ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا قَالَ نَحْوًا مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَنْخَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللهَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَنَاوَلْتَ شَيْئًا فِي مَقَامِكَ هَذَا ثُمَّ رَأَيْنَاكَ تَكَعْكَعْتَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ أُرِيتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَتَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا عُنْقُودًا وَلَوْ أَخَذْتُهُ لَأَكَلْتُمْ مِنْهُ مَا بَقِيَتِ الدُّنْيَا وَأُرِيتُ النَّارَ فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ مَنْظَرًا أَفْظَعَ مِنْهَا وَرَأَيْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِهَا النِّسَاءَ قَالُوا لِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ بِكُفْرِهِنَّ قِيلَ يَكْفُرْنَ بِاللهِ قَالَ يَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ وَيَكْفُرْنَ الْإِحْسَانَ لَوْ أَحْسَنْتَ إِلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ الدَّهْرَ ثُمَّ رَأَتْ مِنْكَ شَيْئًا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْكَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ وَفِي حَدِيثِ الشَّافِعِيِّ قَالَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ مَعَهُ وَكَذَلِكَ فِي رِوَايَةِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ الشَّافِعِيُّ قَوْلَهُ أَفْظَعَ مِنْهَا وَالْبَاقِي سَوَاءٌ

[AI] Narrated Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ: The sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the mosque, stood up, and led the people in prayer. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited a long recitation, then he raised his head and said, "Allah hears the one who praises Him, our Lord, and the praise is due to You." Then, he stood up and recited another long recitation, which was shorter than the first recitation. Then, he said the takbeer and performed a long rukoo'. After that, he raised his head and said, "Allah hears the one who praises Him, our Lord, and the praise is due to You." Then, he did the same actions in the second rakah. He completed four rakahs and four prostrations. The sun cleared before he finished. Then, he stood up, addressed the people, praised Allah, and spoke highly of Him. Then, he said, "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse due to the death or life of anyone. So, when you see them, hasten to the prayer."

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَصَفَّ النَّاسَ وَرَاءَهُ فَاقْتَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَاقْتَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً هِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ فَرَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا هُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْتَكْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ

The sun eclipsed on one extremely hot day during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed along with his Companions. He prolonged his qiyam (standing posture in prayer) till they (his Companions) began to fall down. He then observed a long ruku'. He raised his head (and stood up for long) and then observed a long ruku'. He then raised (his head and stood up) for a long time and then made two prostrations. He then stood up and did like this and thus he observed four ruku's and four prostrations (in two rak'ahs) and then said: All these things were brought to me in which you will be made to enter. Paradise was brought to me till (I was so close to it) that if I (had intended) to pluck a bunch (of grapes) out of it. I would have got it, or he (the Holy Prophet) said: I intended to get a bunch (out of that) but my hand could not reach it. Hell was also brought to me and I saw in it a woman belonging to the tribe of Israel who was tormented for a cat whom she had tied, but did not give it food nor set it free to eat the creatures of the earth; and I saw Abu Thumama 'Amr b. Malik who was dragging his intestines in Hell. They (the Arabs) used to say that the sun and the moon do not eclipse but on the death of some great person; but (in reality) both these (the sun and the moon) are among the signs of Allah which are shown to you; so when there is an eclipse, observe prayer till it (the sun or the moon) brightens. This hadith has been narrated by Hisham with the same chain of transmitters except this" I saw a dark woman with a tail stature and loud voice," but he made no mention of" from among Bani Israel". كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَوْمٍ شَدِيدِ الْحَرِّ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ حَتَّى جَعَلُوا يَخِرُّونَ قَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَنَعَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَكَانَتْ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَجَعَلَ يَتَقَدَّمُ وَيَتَأَخَّرُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْجَنَّةُ وَالنَّارُ فَقُرِّبَتْ مِنِّي الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ تَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا قِطْفًا نِلْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ قَصُرَتْ يَدِي عَنْهُ شَكَّ هِشَامٌ وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ النَّارُ فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَأَخَّرُ رَهْبَةً أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ وَرَأَيْتُ امْرَأَةً حِمْيَرِيَّةً سَوْدَاءَ طَوِيلَةً تُعَذَّبُ فِي هِرَّةٍ لَهَا رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا أَبَا ثُمَامَةَ عَمْرَو بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ وَإِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ إِلَّا لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ وَإِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ يُرِيكُمُوهَا فَإِذَا انْكَسَفَا فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يَنْجَلِيَ

There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died. The people began to to say that there was an eclipse on account of the death of Ibrahim. The Prophet ﷺ stood up and led the people in prayer performing six bowings and four prostrations. he said: Allah is most great, and then recited from the Qur'an and prolonged the recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and recited from the Qur'an but it was less than the first (recitation). He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then raised his head and then recited from the Quran for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. He then bowed nearly as long as he stood. he then raised his head and then recited from the Qur'an for the third time, but it was less than the second recitation. he then bowed nearly as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and went down for prostration. he made two prostrations. He then stood and made three bowings before prostrating himself, the preceding bowing being more lengthy than the following, but he bowed nearly as long as he stood. He then stepped back during the prayer and the rows (of the people) too stepped back along with him. Then he stepped forward and stood in his place, and the rows too stepped forward. he then finished the prayer and the sun had become bright. He said: O people, the sun and the moon are two of Allah's signs; they are not eclipsed on account of a man's death. So when you see anything of that nature, offer prayer until the sun becomes bright. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1178)

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ سِتَّ رَكَعَاتٍ فِي أَرْبَعِ سَجَدَاتٍ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَرَأَ الْقِرَاءَةَ الثَّالِثَةَ دُونَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِمَّا قَامَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَانْحَدَرَ لِلسُّجُودِ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثَلَاثَ رَكَعَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رَكْعَةٌ إِلَّا الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا أَطْوَلُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ رُكُوعُهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ قِيَامِهِ ثُمَّ تَأَخَّرَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَتَأَخَّرَتِ الصُّفُوفُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ تَقَدَّمَ فَقَامَ فِي مَقَامِهِ وَتَقَدَّمْتُ الصُّفُوفُ مَعَهُ فَقَضَى الصَّلَاةَ وَقَدْ طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ بَشَرٍ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِيَ

[AI] Until he reached the women, then he added in the end of the speech things that you were promised and I have seen in my prayer until the fire comes and when you saw me, I hesitated for fear that it would burn me, and until I saw the owner of the broom dragging his broom in the fire, stealing the belongings of the pilgrims with his broom, if he was caught, he said, "It is attached to my broom," and if he was not noticed, he went away, and until I saw the owner of the cat that she tied it and did not feed it and did not let it eat from the earth's crust until it died of hunger, then the paradise was brought and that was when you saw me advance until I stood in my position and I stretched out my hand and I wanted to take its fruit for you to see it, then it appeared to me that I should not do it, so there is nothing that I promised you except that I have seen it in my prayer.

حَتَّى إِذَا انْتَهَى إِلَى النِّسَاءِ ثُمَّ زَادَ فِي آخِرِ الْحَدِيثِ مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ إِلَّا وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي صَلَاتِي هَذِهِ حَتَّى جِيءَ بِالنَّارِ وَذَلِكَ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُصِيبَنِي مِنْ لَفْحِهَا وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَ الْمِحْجَنِ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ كَانَ يَسْرِقُ مَتَاعَ الْحُجَّاجِ بِمِحْجَنِهِ فَإِنْ فُطِنَ لَهُ قَالَ إِنَّهُ تَعَلَّقَ بِمِحْجَنِي وَإِنْ غُفِلَ عَنْهُ ذَهَبَ وَحَتَّى رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا صَاحِبَةَ الْهِرَّةِ الَّتِي رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا ثُمَّ جِيءَ بِالْجَنَّةِ وَذَلِكُمْ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَقَدَّمْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ فِي مَقَامِي وَلَقَدْ مَدَدْتُ يَدِي وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَنَاوَلَ مِنْ ثَمَرِهَا لِتَنْظُرُوا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَفْعَلَ فَمَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ إِلَّا قَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فِي صَلَاتِي هَذِهِ

[AI] The sun set, then Ali prayed for people and recited Yasin and similar verses. Then he bowed down from his recitation of the Surah, then he raised his head and said Allah heard the one who praised him. Then he stood up for the amount of the Surah, made supplication and glorified Allah, then he bowed down for the amount of his recitation, then he said Allah heard the one who praised him. Then he stood up again for the amount of the Surah, then he bowed down for the same amount, until he performed four units of prayer. Then he said Allah heard the one who praised him, then he prostrated, then he stood up in the second unit and did the same as he did in the first unit. Then he sat down and supplicated and expressed desire until the sun rose. Then he informed them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same. Abu Saad Al-Malini informed us that Abu Ahmad bin Adi Al-Hafiz said that Hanash bin Al-Mutamir, Abu Al-Mutamir Al-Kinanin, one of them said Hanash bin Rabia, heard Ali narrated by them. Simak bin Harb and Al-Hakam bin Utaiba spoke about his narration. He is Kuwafi. I heard Ibn Hammad mentioning him according to Al-Bukhari. Abu Ahmad said, and Abu Abdul Rahman An-Nasai said in what Muhammad bin Abbas informed me, Hanash bin Al-Mutamir is not strong. The Sheikh said, and among our companions who went to verify the reports in this number, it is valid for everyone to add what he memorized. and it is possible that ﷺ increased in bowing if he did not see the sun shining. Ishaaq bin Rahawayh went to this, and after him Muhammad bin Ishaaq bin Khuzaimeh, and Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Ishaaq bin Ayyoub As-Sibghi, and Abu Sulaiman Al-Khattabi, and Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Al-Mundhir, the companion of Khalifiyat. And with Allah is success, and what Ash-Shafi'i indicated from the preference is sound. And Allah knows best.

كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى عَلِيٌّ ؓ لِلنَّاسِ فَقَرَأَ بِ يس وَنَحْوِهَا ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِنْ قِرَاءَتِهِ السُّورَةَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللهَ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ قَدْرَ السُّورَةِ يَدْعُو وَيُكَبِّرُ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ قَدْرَ قِرَاءَتِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ أَيْضًا قَدْرَ السُّورَةِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ قَدْرَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا حَتَّى رَكَعَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ فَفَعَلَ كَفِعْلِهِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ جَلَسَ يَدْعُو وَيَرْغَبُ حَتَّى انْكَشَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَذَلِكَ فَعَلَ 6330 أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ أَنْبَأَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ الْحَافِظُ قَالَ حَنَشُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ أَبُو الْمُعْتَمِرِ الْكِنَانِيُّ وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ حَنَشُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا ؓ رَوَى عَنْهُ سِمَاكُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَالْحَكَمُ بْنُ عُتَيْبَةَ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ وَهُوَ كُوفِيٌّ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ حَمَّادٍ يَذْكُرُهُ عَنِ الْبُخَارِيِّ قَالَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ وَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ النَّسَائِيُّ فِيمَا أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ عَنْهُ حَنَشُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَمِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا مَنْ ذَهَبَ إِلَى تَصْحِيحِ الْأَخْبَارِ الْوَارِدَةِ فِي هَذِهِ الْأَعْدَادِ وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَعَلَهَا مَرَّاتٍ مَرَّةً رُكُوعَيْنِ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ وَمَرَّةً ثَلَاثَ رُكُوعَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ وَمَرَّةً أَرْبَعَ رُكُوعَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ فَأَدَّى كُلٌّ مِنْهُمْ مَا حَفِظَ وَأَنَّ الْجَمِيعَ جَائِزٌ وَكَأَنَّهُ ﷺ كَانَ يَزِيدُ فِي الرُّكُوعِ إِذَا لَمْ يَرَ الشَّمْسَ قَدْ تَجَلَّتْ ذَهَبَ إِلَى هَذَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ رَاهَوَيْهِ وَمَنْ بَعْدَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ الصِّبْغِيُّ وَأَبُو سُلَيْمَانَ الْخَطَّابِيُّ وَاسْتَحْسَنَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ صَاحِبُ الْخِلَافِيَّاتِ وَبِاللهِ التَّوْفِيقُ وَالَّذِي أَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّافِعِيُّ مِنَ التَّرْجِيحِ أَصَحُّ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ

In the lifetime of Messenger of Allah ﷺ the sun eclipsed, so he led the people in prayer, and stood up and performed a long Qiyam, then bowed for a long while. He stood up again and performed a long Qiyam but this time the period of standing was shorter than the first. He bowed again for a long time but shorter than the first one, then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration. He did the same in the second rakʿa as he did in the first and then finished the prayer; by then the sun (eclipse) had cleared. He delivered the Khutba (sermon) and after praising and glorifying Allah he said, "The sun and the moon are two signs against the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see the eclipse, remember Allah and say Takbir, pray and give Sadaqa." The Prophet then said, "O followers of Muhammad! By Allah! There is none who has more ghaira (selfrespect) than Allah as He has forbidden that His slaves, male or female commit adultery (illegal sexual intercourse). O followers of Muhammad! By Allah! If you knew that which I know you would laugh little and weep much. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1044)

خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الْقِيَامِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ وَهُوَ دُونَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَادْعُوا اللهَ وَكَبِّرُوا وَتَصَدَّقُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاللهِ مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَغْيَرَ مِنَ اللهِ أَنْ يَزْنِيَ عَبْدُهُ أَوْ تَزْنِيَ أَمَتُهُ يَا أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا

[AI] About Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (PBUH), she mentioned a hadith about the prayer of the Prophet (PBUH) during the solar eclipse, as previously mentioned in the hadith of Bahir ibn Nasr, narrated from Ibn Wahb. And she added at the end, she said: "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, 'Continue praying until you are relieved.' And the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, 'I saw in this position of mine everything that was promised to me. Indeed, I saw myself wanting to take a handful from Paradise when you saw me advancing, and I saw Hellfire breaking parts of it when you saw me delaying, and I saw in it Ibn Luhaib, the one who will suffer the severe punishment.'"

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فِي صَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي خُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ كَمَا مَضَى فِي حَدِيثِ بَحْرِ بْنِ نَصْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ وَزَادَ فِي آخِرِهِ قَالَ وَقَالَ أَيْضًا ﷺ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى يُفْرَجَ عَنْكُمْ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَأَيْتُ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ وُعِدْتُمْ حَتَّى لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أُرِيدُ أَنْ آخُذَ قِطْفًا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي جَعَلْتُ أَتَقَدَّمُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ جَهَنَّمَ يَحْطِمُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا حِينَ رَأَيْتُمُونِي تَأَخَّرْتُ وَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا ابْنَ لُحَيٍّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ

(the wife of the Prophet) On the day when the sun Khasafat (eclipsed) Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed; he stood up and said Takbir and recited a prolonged recitation, then he performed a prolonged bowing, then he raised his head and said, "Samiʿa l-lahu Lyman Hamidah," and then remained standing and recited a prolonged recitation which was shorter than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first. Then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration and he did the same in the second rakʿa as in the first and then finished the prayer with Taslim. By that time the sun (eclipse) had cleared He addressed the people and said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse (Yakhsifan) because of the death or the life (i.e. birth) of someone. So when you see them make haste for the prayer." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1047)

رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَامَ فَكَبَّرَ وَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ وَقَامَ كَمَا هُوَ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً طَوِيلَةً وَهِيَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْأُولَى ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رُكُوعًا طَوِيلًا وَهُوَ أَدْنَى مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سُجُودًا طَوِيلًا ثُمَّ فَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ وَقَدْ تَجَلَّتِ الشَّمْسُ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ وَالْقَمَرِ إِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ
