(59) bukhari:1237Mūsá b. Ismāʿīl > Mahdī b. Maymūn > Wāṣil al-Aḥdab > al-Maʿrūr b. Sūwayd > Abū Dhar

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Someone came to me from my Lord and gave me the news (or good tidings) that if any of my followers dies worshipping none (in any way) along with Allah, he will enter Paradise." I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was wearing white clothes and sleeping. Then I went back to him again after he had got up from his sleep. He said, "Nobody says: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah' and then later on he dies while believing in that, except that he will enter Paradise." I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said. 'Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft." I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said. 'Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft." I said, 'Even it he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?' He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft, inspite of the Abu Dharr's dislike.

Abu ʿAbdullah said, "This is at the time of death or before it if one repents and regrets and says "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. He will be forgiven his sins."

That Al-Miqdad bin ʿAmr Al-Kindi, who was an ally of Bani Zuhra and one of those who fought the battle of Badr together with Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him that he said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Suppose I met one of the infidels and we fought, and he struck one of my hands with his sword and cut it off and then took refuge in a tree and said, "I surrender to Allah (i.e. I have become a Muslim),' could I kill him, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, after he had said this?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You should not kill him." Al- Miqdad said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! But he had cut off one of my two hands, and then he had uttered those words?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You should not kill him, for if you kill him, he would be in your position where you had been before killing him, and you would be in his position where he had been before uttering those words."

(62) bukhari:4269ʿAmr b. Muḥammad > Hushaym > Ḥuṣayn > Abū Ẓabyān > Usāmah b. Zayd > Baʿathanā

Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us towards Al-Huruqa, and in the morning we attacked them and defeated them. I and an Ansari man followed a man from among them and when we took him over, he said, "La ilaha illal-Lah." On hearing that, the Ansari man stopped, but I killed him by stabbing him with my spear. When we returned, the Prophet ﷺ came to know about that and he said, "O Usama! Did you kill him after he had said "La ilaha ilal-Lah?" I said, "But he said so only to save himself." The Prophet ﷺ kept on repeating that so often that I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day.

A man possessed superfluous water, on a way and he withheld it from travelers. -2. A man who gave a pledge of allegiance to a ruler and he gave it only for worldly benefits. If the ruler gives him something he gets satisfied, and if the ruler withholds something from him, he gets dissatisfied. -3. And man displayed his goods for sale after the ʿAsr prayer and he said, 'By Allah, except Whom None has the right to be worshipped, I have been given so much for my goods,' and somebody believes him (and buys them). as follows in Hadith 297. Narrated Abu Huraira: We were in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a Ghazwa, and he remarked about a man who claimed to be a Muslim, saying, "This (man) is from the people of the (Hell) Fire." When the battle started, the man fought violently till he got wounded. Somebody said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The man whom you described as being from the people of the (Hell) Fire fought violently today and died." The Prophet ﷺ said, "He will go to the (Hell) Fire." Some people were on the point of doubting (the truth of what the Prophet had said) while they were in this state, suddenly someone said that he was still alive but severely wounded. When night fell, he lost patience and committed suicide. The Prophet ﷺ was informed of that, and he said, "Allah is Greater! I testify that I am Allah's Slave and His Apostle." Then he ordered Bilal to announce amongst the people: 'None will enter Paradise but a Muslim, and Allah may support this religion (i.e. Islam) even with a disobedient man.'

Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the pagans faced each other and started fighting. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his camp and when the pagans returned to their camp, somebody talked about a man amongst the companions of Messenger of Allah ﷺ who would follow and kill with his sword any pagan going alone. He said, "Nobody did his job (i.e. fighting) so properly today as that man." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, he is amongst the people of the (Hell) Fire." A man amongst the people said, "I shall accompany him (to watch what he does)" Thus he accompanied him, and wherever he stood, he would stand with him, and wherever he ran, he would run with him. Then the (brave) man got wounded seriously and he decided to bring about his death quickly. He planted the blade of the sword in the ground directing its sharp end towards his chest between his two breasts. Then he leaned on the sword and killed himself. The other man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I testify that you are Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What has happened?" He replied, "(It is about) the man whom you had described as one of the people of the (Hell) Fire. The people were greatly surprised at what you said, and I said, 'I will find out his reality for you.' So, I came out seeking him. He got severely wounded, and hastened to die by slanting the blade of his sword in the ground directing its sharp end towards his chest between his two breasts. Then he eased on his sword and killed himself." when Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man may seem to the people as if he were practising the deeds of the people of Paradise while in fact he is from the people of the Hell) Fire, another may seem to the people as if he were practicing the deeds of the people of Hell (Fire), while in fact he is from the people of Paradise."

When we conquered Khaibar, we gained neither gold nor silver as booty, but we gained cows, camels, goods and gardens. Then we departed with Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the valley of Al-Qira, and at that time Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a slave called Midʿam who had been presented to him by one of Banu Ad-Dibbab. While the slave was dismounting the saddle of Messenger of Allah ﷺ an arrow the thrower of which was unknown, came and hit him. The people said, "Congratulations to him for the martyrdom." Allah's Apostle said, "No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, the sheet (of cloth) which he had taken (illegally) on the day of Khaibar from the booty before the distribution of the booty, has become a flame of Fire burning him." On hearing that, a man brought one or two leather straps of shoes to the Prophet and said, "These are things I took (illegally)." On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is a strap, or these are two straps of Fire."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated to us two narrations, one of which I have seen (happening) and I am waiting for the other. He narrated that honesty was preserved in the roots of the hearts of men (in the beginning) and then they learnt it (honesty) from the Qur'an, and then they learnt it from the (Prophet's) Sunna (tradition). He also told us about its disappearance, saying, "A man will go to sleep whereupon honesty will be taken away from his heart, and only its trace will remain, resembling the traces of fire. He then will sleep whereupon the remainder of the honesty will also be taken away (from his heart) and its trace will resemble a blister which is raised over the surface of skin, when an ember touches one's foot; and in fact, this blister does not contain anything. So there will come a day when people will deal in business with each other but there will hardly be any trustworthy persons among them. Then it will be said that in such-and-such a tribe there is such-and-such person who is honest, and a man will be admired for his intelligence, good manners and strength, though indeed he will not have belief equal to a mustard seed in his heart."

The narrator added: There came upon me a time when I did not mind dealing with anyone of you, for if he was a Muslim, his religion would prevent him from cheating; and if he was a Christian, his Muslim ruler would prevent him from cheating; but today I cannot deal except with so-and-so and so-and-so.

I said, 'I know it as the Prophet ﷺ had said it.' ʿUmar said, 'No doubt you are bold.' I said, 'The afflictions caused for a man by his wife, money, children and neighbor are expiated by his prayers, fasting, charity and by enjoining (what is good) and forbidding (what is evil).' ʿUmar said, 'I did not mean that but I asked about that affliction which will spread like the waves of the sea.' I (Hudhaifa) said, 'O leader of the faithful believers! You need not be afraid of it as there is a closed door between you and it.' ʿUmar asked, Will the door be broken or opened?' I replied, 'It will be broken.' ʿUmar said, 'Then it will never be closed again.'

I was asked whether ʿUmar knew that door. I replied that he knew it as one knows that there will be night before the tomorrow morning. I narrated a Hadith that was free from any misstatement" The subnarrator added that they deputized Masruq to ask Hudhaifa (about the door). Hudhaifa said, "The door was ʿUmar himself."

The Prophet ﷺ said (to us), " List the names of those people who have announced that they are Muslims." So, we listed one thousand and five hundred men. Then we wondered, "Should we be afraid (of infidels) although we are one thousand and five hundred in number?" No doubt, we witnessed ourselves being afflicted with such bad trials that one would have to offer the prayer alone in fear.

Narrated Al-Aʿmash: "We (listed the Muslims and) found them five hundred." And Abu Muawiya said, "Between six hundred to seven hundred."

A Person from the people of the scriptures who believed in his prophet (Jesus or Moses) and then believed in the Prophet ﷺ Muhammad (i .e. has embraced Islam). 2. A slave who discharges his duties to Allah and his master. 3. A master of a woman-slave who teaches her good manners and educates her in the best possible way (the religion) and manumits her and then marries her."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary (Jesus) will shortly descend amongst you people (Muslims) as a just ruler and will break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya (a tax taken from the non-Muslims, who are in the protection, of the Muslim government). I entered the mosque while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting there. When the sun had set, the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Abu Dharr! Do you know where this (sun) goes?" I said, "Allah and His Apostle know best." He said, "It goes and asks permission to prostrate, and it is allowed, and (one day) it, as if being ordered to return whence it came, then it will rise from the west." Then the Prophet ﷺ recited, "That: "And the sun runs on its fixed course (for a term decreed)," (36.38) as it is recited by ʿAbdullah.

Iqraʾ: Story of the first encounter with Jibrīl at Ḥirāʾ and the first Divine Revelation

(99) bukhari:3Yaḥyá b. Bukayr > al-Layth > ʿUqayl > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr > ʿĀʾishah

At first what started of the Waḥī (Revelation) to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was good visions during sleep and he never saw a vision except what came to him was the like of the crack of dawn (i.e. his visions came true). Thereafter, seclusion was made beloved to him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Ḥirāʾ where he used to practice monotheism, which was worship for several days until he longed to see his family and prepare for a similar trip. He would then return to Khadījah and would prepare for a similar trip.

Until ˹one day,˺ the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Ḥirāʾ. The Angel came to him and asked him and said "Iqraʾ (Read!)". He said, "I do not know how to read!" He said, "The Angel grabbed me and overwhelmed me such that fatigue overcame me. He then let me go and and said 'Read.' I said, 'I do not know how to read!' Then he grabbed me a second time and overwhelmed me such that fatigue overcame me. He then let me go and said 'Read!' I said, 'I do not know how to read!' Then he grabbed me for the third time, overwhelmed me, and then let me go and said, 'Read in the name of your Lord: who created; He created man from ʿalaq (a thing suspended). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (ʿAlaq 96:1-3)

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadījah b. Khuwaylid ؓ and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was lifted and after that he told her what had happened and said, "I fear for myself." Khadījah said, "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you! (1) In fact, you keep good relations with your kith and kin, (2) you carry the weak, (3) you provide for those deprived, (4) you are hospitable to your guests, and (5) you assist the deserving ˹calamity-afflicted˺ ones."

Khadījah then brought him to her cousin Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzá, paternal cousin of Khadījah, and one who had become a Christian during the pre-Islamic Period, and used to write in Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight.

Khadījah said to Waraqah: Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin! Waraqah said, "O my nephew! What have you seen? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ described to him whatever he had seen. Waraqah then said to him: This is the nāmūs (keeper of secrets) whom Allah had sent to Moses ﷺ. Would that I were young and would be alive when your people would turn you out. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqah said: Yes, no man has ever come with something similar to what you have brought and was not treated with hostility. And if I would see ˹such ˺ a day ˹of yours˺ then I would strongly support you. The Waraqah could not fulfill ˹his promise˺ and died. Then the Waḥī paused for a while.

Cover me! Story of the second encounter with Jibrīl in his full form

(100) bukhari:4Ibn Shihāb > Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh al-Anṣārī

as he was narrating about the period of Wahī (Revelation): "While I was walking, ˹suddenly˺ I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same Angel who had visited me at the cave of Ḥirāʾ sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I got afraid of him, came back ˹home˺ and said, 'Cover me!' Then Allah ﷻ revealed: 'O you who covers himself [with a garment]' Arise and warn.' until His statement 'And idolatory, avoid.' (Muddaththir 74:1-5) After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly."

It was corroborated by ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf and Abū Ṣāliḥ, and was corroborated by Hilāl b. Raddād from Zuhrī and Yūnus and Maʿmar said portions of it.

Alternative narrative regarding the first Divine revelation received by the Prophet ﷺ that it was the first fews āyāt of Sūrat al-Muddaththir

(101) bukhari:4922Yaḥyá > Wakīʿ > ʿAlī b. al-Mubārak > Yaḥyá b. Abū Kathīr

I asked Aba Salama bin ʿAbdur-Rahman about the first Sura revealed of the Qur'an. He replied "O you, wrapped-up (i.e. Al Muddaththir)." I said, "They say it was, 'Read, in the Name of your Lord Who created,' (i.e. Surat Al-ʿAlaq (the Clot)." On that, Abu Salama said, "I asked Jabir bin ʿAbdullah about that, saying the same as you have said, whereupon he said, 'I will not tell you except what Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told us. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was in seclusion in the cave of Hira', and after I completed the limited period of my seclusion. I came down (from the cave) and heard a voice calling me. I looked to my right, but saw nothing. Then I looked up and saw something. So I went to Khadija (the Prophet's wife) and told her to wrap me up and pour cold water on me. So they wrapped me up and poured cold water on me." Then, 'O you, (Muhammad) wrapped up! Arise and warn,' (Surat Al Muddaththir) was revealed." (74.1)

The event of Miraj of the Prophet ﷺ ascending through the seven skies

(102) bukhari:349Yaḥyá b. Bukayr > al-Layth > Yūnus > Ibn Shihāb > Anas b. Mālik

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "While I was at Mecca the roof of my house was opened and Gabriel descended, opened my chest, and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden tray full of wisdom and faith and having poured its contents into my chest, he closed it. Then he took my hand and ascended with me to the nearest heaven."

"When I reached the nearest heaven, Gabriel said to the gatekeeper of the heaven, 'Open (the gate).' The gatekeeper asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel answered: 'Gabriel.' He asked, 'Is there anyone with you?' Gabriel replied, 'Yes, Muhammad I is with me.' He asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel said, 'Yes.' So the gate was opened and we went over the nearest heaven and there we saw a man sitting with some people on his right and some on his left. When he looked towards his right, he laughed and when he looked toward his left he wept. Then he said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son.' I asked Gabriel, 'Who is he?' He replied, 'He is Adam and the people on his right and left are the souls of his offspring. Those on his right are the people of Paradise and those on his left are the people of Hell and when he looks towards his right he laughs and when he looks towards his left he weeps.'"

"Then he ascended with me till he reached the second heaven and he (Gabriel) said to its gatekeeper, 'Open (the gate).' The gatekeeper said to him the same as the gatekeeper of the first heaven had said and he opened the gate."

Anas said: Abu Dhar added that the Prophet ﷺ met Adam, Idris, Moses, Jesus and Abraham, he (Abu Dhar) did not mention on which heaven they were but he mentioned that he (the Prophet ﷺ ) met Adam on the nearest heaven and Abraham on the sixth heaven.

Anas said, When Gabriel along with the Prophet ﷺ passed by Idris, "he said said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious brother.' I asked, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Idris."

"Then I passed by Moses and he said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious brother.' I asked Gabriel, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Moses.'"

"Then I passed by Jesus and he said, 'Welcome! O pious brother and pious Prophet.' I asked, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Jesus."

"Then I passed by Abraham and he said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son.' I asked Gabriel, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Abraham.'"

The Prophet ﷺ added, 'Then Gabriel ascended with me to a place where I heard the creaking of the pens."

Ibn Hazm and Anas bin Malik said: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then Allah enjoined fifty prayers on my followers when I returned with this order of Allah, I passed by Moses who asked me, 'What has Allah enjoined on your followers?' I replied, 'He has enjoined fifty prayers on them.' Moses said, 'Go back to your Lord (and appeal for reduction) for your followers will not be able to bear it.' (So I went back to Allah and requested for reduction) and He reduced it to half. When I passed by Moses again and informed him about it, he said, 'Go back to your Lord as your followers will not be able to bear it.' So I returned to Allah and requested for further reduction and half of it was reduced. I again passed by Moses and he said to me: 'Return to your Lord, for your followers will not be able to bear it. So I returned to Allah and He said, 'These are five prayers and they are all (equal to) fifty (in reward) for My Word does not change.' I returned to Moses and he told me to go back once again. I replied, 'Now I feel shy of asking my Lord again.'"

"Then Gabriel took me till we '' reached Sidrat al-Muntahá (a lote tree of the utmost boundary) which was shrouded in colors, indescribable. Then I was admitted into Paradise where I found small (tents or) walls (made) of pearls and its earth was of musk."

Description of the event of Miʿrāj (Ascension) of the Prophet ﷺ through the seven skies

(103) bukhari:3207Hudbah b. Khālid > Hammām > Qatādah > Lī Khalīfah > Yazīd b. Zurayʿ > Saʿīd And Hishām > Qatādah > Anas b. Mālik > Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "While I was at the House in a state midway between sleep and wakefulness, (an angel recognized me) as the man lying between two men. A golden tray full of wisdom and belief was brought to me and my body was cut open from the throat to the lower part of the ʿAbdomen and then my abdomen was washed with Zamzam water and (my heart was) filled with wisdom and belief. The Burāq, a white animal, smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey was brought to me."

"And I set out with Gabriel, and when I reached the nearest heaven. Gabriel said to the heaven gate-keeper, 'Open the gate.' The gatekeeper asked, 'Who is it?' He said, 'Gabriel.' The gate-keeper,' Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel said, 'Muhammad.' The gatekeeper said, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel said, 'Yes.' Then it was said, 'He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!' Then I met Adam and greeted him and he said, 'You are welcomed O son and a Prophet.'"

"Then we ascended to the second heaven. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel said, 'Gabriel.' It was said, 'Who is with you?' He said, 'Muhammad' It was asked, 'Has he been sent for?' He said, 'Yes.' It was said, 'He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!" Then I met Jesus and Yahya (John) who said, 'You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet.'"

"Then we ascended to the third heaven. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel said, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who is with you? Gabriel said, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been sent for?' 'Yes,' said Gabriel. 'He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!' (The Prophet ﷺ added:). There I met Joseph and greeted him, and he replied, 'You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet!'"

"Then we ascended to the fourth heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met Idris and greeted him. He said, 'You are welcomed O brother and Prophet.'"

"Then we ascended to the fifth heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in previous heavens. there I met and greeted Aaron who said, 'You are welcomed O brother and a Prophet"."

"Then we ascended to the sixth heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Moses who said, 'You are welcomed O brother and. a Prophet.' When I proceeded on, he started weeping and on being asked why he was weeping, he said, 'O Lord! Followers of this youth who was sent after me will enter Paradise in greater number than my followers.'"

"Then we ascended to the seventh heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Abraham who said, 'You are welcomed o son and a Prophet.'"

"Then I was shown al-Bayt al-Maʿmūr (the Frequented House). I asked Gabriel about it and he said, This is al-Bayt al-Maʿmūr where seventy thousand angels perform prayers daily and when they leave they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily).'"

"Then I was shown Sidrat al-Muntahá (a lote tree in the seventh heaven) and I saw its nabaq fruits which resembled the clay jugs of Hajar (a town in Arabia), and its leaves were like the ears of elephants, and four rivers originated at its root, two of them were apparent and two were hidden. I asked Gabriel about those rivers and he said, 'The two hidden rivers are in Paradise, and the apparent ones are the Nile and the Euphrates.'"

"Then fifty prayers were enjoined on me. I descended till I met Moses who asked me, 'What have you done?' I said, 'Fifty prayers have been enjoined on me.' He said, 'I know the people better than you, because I had the hardest experience to bring Bani Israel to obedience. Your followers cannot put up with such obligation. So, return to your Lord and request Him (to reduce the number of prayers.' I returned and requested Allah (for reduction) and He made it forty. I returned and (met Moses) and had a similar discussion, and then returned again to Allah for reduction and He made it thirty, then twenty, then ten, and then I came to Moses who repeated the same advice. Ultimately Allah reduced it to five. When I came to Moses again, he said, 'What have you done?' I said, 'Allah has made it five only.' He repeated the same advice but I said that I surrendered (to Allah's Final Order)'" Messenger of Allah ﷺ was addressed by Allah, "I have decreed My Obligation and have reduced the burden on My slaves, and I shall reward a single good deed as if it were ten good deeds."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "On the night of my Ascent to the Heaven, I saw Moses who was a tall brown curlyhaired man as if he was one of the men of Shan'awa tribe, and I saw Jesus, a man of medium height and moderate complexion inclined to the red and white colors and of lank hair. I also saw Malik, the gate-keeper of the (Hell) Fire and Ad-Dajjal amongst the signs which Allah showed me." (The Prophet then recited the Holy Verse): "So be not you in doubt of meeting him' when you met Moses during the night of Mi'raj over the heavens" (32.23)

Narrated Anas and Abu Bakra: "The Prophet ﷺ said, "The angels will guard Medina from Ad-Dajjal (who will not be able to enter the city of Medina).
