1.14 Clarifying the number of branches of faith, the best and the least of them, the virtue of modesty (Al-Haya') and the fact that it is part of faith

Modesty is one of sixty or more branches of Iman

(21) bukhari:9ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad > Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī > Sulaymān b. Bilāl > ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār > Abū Ṣāliḥ > Abū Hurayrah

from the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Faith has sixty-odd branches, and modesty is a branch of faith.”

(22) bukhari:24ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik b. Anas > Ibn Shihāb > Sālim b. ʿAbdullāh from his father

that once Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by an Ansari (man) who was admonishing his brother regarding Haya'. On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave him as Haya' is a part of faith." (See Hadith 9)

Modesty and shyness bring about nothing except goodness

(23) bukhari:6117Ādam > Shuʿbah > Qatādah > Abū al-Sawwār al-ʿAdawī > ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn

the Prophet ﷺ said, "Ḥayāʾ (modesty) brings about nothing except good."

Thereupon Bushayr b. Kaʿb said: It is written in ˹my˺ wisdom ˹notes˺ that Ḥayāʾ leads to solemnity; Ḥayāʾ leads to tranquility. ʿImrān said to him: I am narrating to you the saying of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you are speaking about your ˹notes on˺ paper (wisdom book)?
