“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say” – and (one of the narrators) ‘Abdur-Rahim said: “he used to seek refuge” – “when he traveled: ‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is-safar, wa ka’abatil-munqalab, wal-hawri ba’dal-kawr, wa da’watil-mazlum, wa su’il-manzari fil-ahli wal-mal (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return, from decrease after increase, from the prayer of the one who has been wronged, and seeing some calamity befall my family or wealth).’” (One of the narrators) Abu Mu’awiyah added: “And when he returned he said likewise.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3888)

Abdullah b. Sarjis (Allah be pleased with him) reported that when Messenger of Allah ﷺ set forth on a journey, he sought refuge (with Allah) from the hardships of the travelling, and finding of evil changes on return, and disgrace after honour, and the curse of the oppressed and a gloomy sad scene in family and property.

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded on journey, he would say: O Allah, Thou art the Companion in the journey, and the One Who looks after the family; O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the difficulty of travelling, finding harm when I return, and unhappiness in what I see coming to my family and property. O Allah, make the length of his journey short for us, and the journey easy for us.

[Machine] Aasim, who has seen the Prophet ﷺ , used to say when going on a journey: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of travel, the distressful return, and the sight of the afflicted, and from the evil consequences upon wealth and family." And when he would return, he would say the same except that he would start with "the evil consequences upon the family and wealth."  

أحمد:٢٠٧٧٦حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ قَالَ

[Machine] He witnessed the Prophet ﷺ saying, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to travel, he would say, 'O Allah, You are the companion in the journey and the successor in the family. O Allah, accompany us in our journey and leave us in our families. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of travel, the discomforts of returning home, being in a foreign land after our own, the supplication of the oppressed, and the hardships in family and wealth.' It was asked to Asim about 'the discomforts of returning home', and he said, 'It means the heat after what was before it.'"

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to say when traveling: "O Allah, You are our companion in the journey, and the successor in our family. O Allah, accompany us on our journey and be our successor in our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, the melancholy of returning home, the torment of misfortune after prosperity, the supplication of the oppressed, and the evil of seeing in regards to family and wealth."  

البيهقي:١٠٣٠٣أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أنا أَبُو الْفَضْلِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ثنا حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْبَكْرَاوِيُّ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ الضَّبِّيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ قَالَ

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا سَافَرَ قَالَ اللهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اللهُمَّ اصْحَبْنَا فِي سَفَرِنَا وَاخْلُفْنَا فِي أَهْلِنَا اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَمِنَ الْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْرِ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِينَ وَمِنْ سُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ

" عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بنِ سَرْجس قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادَ سَفَرًا قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِى السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِى الأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاء السَّفَرِ، وَكآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلِبِ، وَالْحور بَعْدَ الْكور، وَدَعْوَة الْمَظلُومِ، وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِى الأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ".
