Etiquettes when sitting in the pathways and giving pathway its due right

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Beware! Avoid sitting on he roads (ways)." The people said, "There is no way out of it as these are our sitting places where we have talks." The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you must sit there, then observe the rights of the way." They asked, "What are the rights of the way?" He said, "They are the lowering of your gazes (on seeing what is illegal to look at), refraining from harming people, returning greetings, advocating good and forbidding evil."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْجُلُوسَ عَلَى الطُّرُقَاتِ فَقَالُوا مَا لَنَا بُدٌّ إِنَّمَا هِيَ مَجَالِسُنَا نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا قَالَ فَإِذَا أَبَيْتُمْ إِلاَّ الْمَجَالِسَ فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهَا قَالُوا وَمَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ قَالَ غَضُّ الْبَصَرِ وَكَفُّ الأَذَى وَرَدُّ السَّلاَمِ وَأَمْرٌ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَنَهْىٌ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

Avoid sitting on the paths. They (the Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, we cannot help but holding our meetings (in these paths) and discuss matters (there). Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you insist on holding meetings, then give the path its due right. They said: What are its due rights? Upon this he said: Lowering the gaze, refraining from doing harm, exchanging of greetings. commanding of good and forbidding from evil.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْجُلُوسَ بِالطُّرُقَاتِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا لَنَا بُدٌّ مِنْ مَجَالِسِنَا نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَبَيْتُمْ إِلاَّ الْمَجْلِسَ فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ قَالُوا وَمَا حَقُّهُ قَالَ غَضُّ الْبَصَرِ وَكَفُّ الأَذَى وَرَدُّ السَّلاَمِ وَالأَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْىُ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

Avoid sitting on the paths. They (his Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, there is no other help to it (but to sit there as we) hold our meetings and discuss matters there. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you have to sit at all, then fulfil the rights, of the path. They said: What are their rights? Thereupon he said: Keeping the eye downward (so that you may not stare at the women), refraining from doing some harm to the other and exchanging mutual greetings (saying as-Salamu 'Alaikum to one another) and commanding the good and forbidding the evil.

They asked: What is the due of roads, Apostle of Allah? The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Beware! Avoid sitting on the roads." They (the people) said, "O Allah s Apostle! We can't help sitting (on the roads) as these are (our places) here we have talks." The Prophet ﷺ said, ' l f you refuse but to sit, then pay the road its right ' They said, "What is the right of the road, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, 'Lowering your gaze, refraining from harming others, returning greeting, and enjoining what is good, and forbidding what is evil." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6229)

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet ﷺ forbade gatherings in the road. They said, "Messenger of Allah, it is hard for us to sit in our houses." He said, "If you must sit there, then fulfil the rights of the gathering." They asked, 'What is their right, Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Guiding anyone who asks for directions, returning the greeting, lowering the eye, commanding the correct and forbidding the bad."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الْمَجَالِسِ بِالصُّعُدَاتِ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَيَشُقُّ عَلَيْنَا الْجُلُوسُ فِي بُيُوتِنَا؟ قَالَ فَإِنْ جَلَسْتُمْ فَأَعْطُوا الْمَجَالِسَ حَقَّهَا قَالُوا وَمَا حَقُّهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ إِدْلاَلُ السَّائِلِ وَرَدُّ السَّلاَمِ وَغَضُّ الأَبْصَارِ وَالأَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيُ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Beware of sitting in the road." They said, "Messenger of Allah, we must meet where we can sit to talk." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you must do it, then give the road its due. "What is the due of the road, Messenger of Allah," they asked. He replied, "Lowering the eye, avoiding doing anything harmful, commanding the correct and forbidding the bad."

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْجُلُوسَ فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا لَنَا بُدٌّ مِنْ مَجَالِسِنَا نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَمَّا إِذْ أَبَيْتُمْ فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ قَالُوا وَمَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ غَضُّ الْبَصَرِ وَكَفُّ الأَذَى وَالأَمْرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيُ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

"إِيَّاكُمْ والجُلُوسَ عَلَى الطُّرُقَاتِ فَإنْ أَبَيْتُمْ فَأعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ، غَضُّ البَصَرِ، وَكَفُّ الأَذَى وَردُّ السَّلَام، والأَمْرُ بالمَعْرُوفِ والنَّهْىُ عَنِ المنكَرِ وَإرْشَادُ السَّبيلِ ".

"إِيَّاكُمْ والجُلُوس عَلَى الطُّرُقَاتِ، فَإِنَّ أبَيْتُمْ إِلَّا المَجَالِسِ فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهَا، قَالُوا: وَمَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ؟ قَالَ: غَضُ البَصَرِ، وَكَفُّ الأَذَى، وَرَدُّ السَّلَام، والأَمر بالمعْرُوفِ والنَّهْى عَن المنكَرِ ".
