I gave a horse to be used in Allah's Cause, but later on I saw it being sold. I asked the Prophet ﷺ whether I could buy it. He said, "Don't buy it and don't take back your gift of charity."

عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ حَمَلْتُ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُبَاعُ فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ آشْتَرِيهِ فَقَالَ لاَ تَشْتَرِهِ وَلاَ تَعُدْ فِي صَدَقَتِكَ

Once I gave a horse (for riding) in Allah's Cause. Later I saw it being sold. I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ (whether I could buy it). He said, "Don't buy it, for you should not get back what you have given in charity."

Umar, do not get back what you gave as charity.

Umar gave a horse to be used in the cause of Allah. Then he saw it being sold, so he wanted to buy it, but the Prophet said: "Do not take back what you have given in charity."  

الترمذي:٦٦٨حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عُمَرَ

أَنَّهُ حَمَلَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ رَآهَا تُبَاعُ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَشْتَرِيَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لاَ تَعُدْ فِي صَدَقَتِكَ  

قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ أَكْثَرِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ
malik:17-54Mālik > Nāfiʿ > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that Umar ibn al-Khattab gave a horse to carry some one in the way of Allah, and then he wished to buy it back. So he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said, "Do not buy or take back your sadaqa."  

مالك:١٧-٥٤وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ حَمَلَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَبْتَاعَهُ فَسَأَلَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لاَ تَبْتَعْهُ وَلاَ تَعُدْ فِي صَدَقَتِكَ

[Machine] Omar ibn Al-Khattab rode a horse in the path of Allah and found it being sold, so he asked the Prophet ﷺ about its price. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not consider it as part of your charity."

[Machine] That Umar ibn Al-Khattab gave charity to a man with a horse in the path of Allah, then he found Umar selling it. So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I gave charity to so-and-so with a horse, and I found him selling it. Should I buy it?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not buy it and do not count it as part of your charity."  

الطبراني:١٣٢٤٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنْبَاعِ رَوْحُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْأَسْوَدِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ تَصَدَّقَ عَلَى رَجُلٍ بِفَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَوَجَدَهُ عُمَرُ يَبِيعُهَا فَأَتَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي تَصَدَّقْتُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ بِفَرَسٍ وَإِنِّي وَجَدْتُهُ يَبِيعُهَا أَفَأَشْتَرِيهَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَشْتَرِهَا وَلَا تَعُدْ فِي صَدَقَتِكَ»

[Machine] Umair ibn al-Khattab rode on a horse in the way of Allah and saw something from its produce being sold. He wanted to buy it, so he asked the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not buy it, nor include it in your charity."  

البيهقي:٧٦٣٢وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
