(the wife of the Prophet) that she was told that ʿAbdullah bin Az-Zubair (on hearing that she was selling or giving something as a gift) said, "By Allah, if ʿAisha does not give up this, I will declare her incompetent to dispose of her wealth." I said, "Did he (ʿAbdullah bin Az-Zubair) say so?" They (people) said, "Yes." ʿAisha said, "I vow to Allah that I will never speak to Ibn Az-Zubair." When this desertion lasted long, ʿAbdullah bin Az-Zubair sought intercession with her, but she said, "By Allah, I will not accept the intercession of anyone for him, and will not commit a sin by breaking my vow." When this state of affairs was prolonged on Ibn Az-Zubair (he felt it hard on him), he said to Al- Miswar bin Makhrama and ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Al-Aswad bin 'Abu Yaghuth, who were from the tribe of Bani Zahra, "I beseech you, by Allah, to let me enter upon ʿAisha, for it is unlawful for her to vow to cut the relation with me." So Al-Miswar and ʿAbdur-Rahman, wrapping their sheets around themselves, asked ʿAisha's permission saying, "Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be upon you! Shall we come in?" ʿAisha said, "Come in." They said, "All of us?" She said, "Yes, come in all of you," not knowing that Ibn Az- Zubair was also with them. So when they entered, Ibn Az-Zubair entered the screened place and got hold of ʿAisha and started requesting her to excuse him, and wept. Al-Miswar and ʿAbdur Rahman also started requesting her to speak to him and to accept his repentance. They said (to her), "The Prophet ﷺ forbade what you know of deserting (not speaking to your Muslim Brethren), for it is unlawful for any Muslim not to talk to his brother for more than three nights (days)." So when they increased their reminding her (of the superiority of having good relation with Kith and kin, and of excusing others' sins), and brought her down to a critical situation, she started reminding them, and wept, saying, "I have made a vow, and (the question of) vow is a difficult one." They (Al-Miswar and ʿAbdur-Rahman) persisted in their appeal till she spoke with ʿAbdullah bin Az- Zubair and she manumitted forty slaves as an expiation for her vow. Later on, whenever she remembered her vow, she used to weep so much that her veil used to become wet with her tears. (Using translation from Bukhārī 6073)

muslim:1333fHannād b. al-Sarī > Ibn Abū Zāʾidah > Ibn Abū Sulaymān > ʿAṭāʾ

The House was burnt during the time of Yazid b. Muawiya when the people of Syria had fought (in Mecca). And it happened with it (the Ka'ba) what was (in store for it). Ibn Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) felt it (in the same state) until the people came in the season (of Hajj). (The idea behind was) that he wanted to exhort them or incite them (to war) against the people of Syria. When the people had arrived he said to them: O people, advise me about the Ka'ba. Should I demolish it and then build it from its very foundation, or should I repair whatever has been damaged of it? Ibn 'Abbas said: An idea has occurred to me according to which I think that you should only repair (the portion which has been) damaged, and leave the House (in that very state in which) people embraced Islam (and leave those very stones in the same state) when people embraced Islam, and over which Allah's Apostle ﷺ had raised it. Thereupon Ibn Zubair said: It the house of any one of you is burnt, he would not be contented until he had reconstructed it, then what about the House of your Lord (which is far more Important than your house)? I would seek good advice from my Lord thrice and then I would make up (my mind) about this affair. After seeking good advice thrice, he made up his mind to demolish it. The people apprehended that calamity might fall from heaven on those persons who would be first to climb (over the building for the purpose of demolishing it), till one (took up courage, and ascended the roof), and threw down one of its stones. When the people saw no calamity befalling him, they followed him, demolished it until it was razed to the ground. Then Ibn Zubair erected pillars and hung cartains on them (in order to provide facilities to the people for observing the time of its construction). And the walls were raised; and Ibn Zubair said: I heard 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) say that Allah's Apostle ﷺ had observed: If the people had Rot recently (abandoned) unbelief, find I had means enough to reconstruct it, which I had not, I would have definitely excompassed in it five cubits of area from Hijr. And I would also have constructed a door for the people to enter, and a door for their exit. I today have (the means to spend) and I entertain no fearfrom the side of people (that they would protest against this change). So he added five cubits of area from the side of Hatim to it that there appeared (the old) foundation (upon which Hadrat Ibrahim had built the Ka'ba). and the people saw that and it was upon this foundation that the wall was raised. The length of the Ka'ba was eighteen cubits. when addition was made to it (which was in its breadth), then naturally the length appears to be) small (as compared with its breadth). Then addition of ten cubits (of area) was made in its length (also). Two doors were also constructed, one of which (was meant) for entrance and the other one for exit. When Ibn Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) was killed, Hajjaj wrote to 'Abd al-Malik (b. Marwan) informing him about it, and telling him that Ibn Zubair (Allah be pleased with him) had built (the Ka'ba) on those very foundations (which were laid by Ibrahim) and which reliable persons among the Meccans had seen. 'Abd al-Malik wrote to him: We are not concerned with the censuring of Ibn Zubair in anything. Keep intact the addition made by him in the side of length, and whatever he has added frem the side of Hijr revert to (its previous) foundation, and wall up the door which he had opened. Thus Hajjaj at the command of Abd al-Malik) demolished it (that portion) and rebuilt it on (its previous) foundations.

[Machine] "In a sale or a gift, Aisha gave it, and I swear by Allah, she said, 'Either Aisha will finish or I will stone her.' Aisha said when she heard that, 'Indeed, I have made a vow to Allah that I will never speak to Ibn Zubair.' So when Ibn Zubair pleaded with her during her prolonged migration to him, she said, 'By Allah, I will not intercede for him with anyone, nor will I break my vow that I made forever.' And when this continued for a long time with Ibn Zubair, Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and Abdul Rahman bin Al-Aswad bin Abdi Yaghuth, who were from the Banu Zuhrah tribe, spoke to him and said, 'We swear by Allah that we will not enter upon Aisha unless you allow us, as it is not permissible for her to make a vow regarding our relationship.' So Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and Abdul Rahman bin Al-Aswad went along with Abdullah bin Zubair, and they covered themselves with their cloaks until they sought permission to enter upon Aisha. And they said, 'Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Can we come in, O Mother of the Believers?' Aisha said, 'Enter.' And they said, 'All of us?' She said, 'Yes, all of you.' And Aisha did not know that Ibn Zubair was with them. So when they entered, Ibn Zubair broke through the veil and entered upon Aisha and embraced her, and he began to beg her and cry. And Al-Miswar and Abdul Rahman also pleaded with Aisha and said to her, 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade what you did, and it is not permissible for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three days.' When they persisted in reminding Aisha of this, she began to cry and remind them, and she said, 'I have made a vow, and the vow is severe.' And they continued with her until she spoke to Ibn Zubair, and then she released him from his vow. This involved the freeing of forty slaves. [Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to travel with some of his wives and divide his time among them. He traveled with Aisha, the daughter of Abu Bakr, and she had a howdah. The howdah was carried by men who placed it on the camel. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions performed the marriage for Aisha, and she went out for a need and got delayed without anyone realizing it. When the Prophet ﷺ woke up, the people had already set off, and the men carrying the howdah came and lifted it without knowing that she was in it. So they set off, and Aisha arrived and found that they had already left, so she sat in her place. A man from the Ansar named Safwan bin Al-Muattal, who used to avoid women, came near her. He had a camel with him, and when he saw her, he carried her and used to see her before the veil. He put her on the camel and led it until they reached the people and the Prophet ﷺ . People spoke about it, and it reached the Prophet ﷺ , so it was hard for him. He secluded her and consulted Zaid bin Thabit and others about it. Zaid said, "O Messenger of Allah, leave her. Perhaps Allah will provide you with something better." Ali bin Abi Talib said, "Women are many." So the Prophet ﷺ lifted her onto him (for a better understanding of what is meant, refer to the Arabic text), and Aisha set out walking in the company of women. She stumbled and fell, causing people to curse a Mus`ab bin Umayr. Aisha said, "How terrible! You say such a thing to a man of the Messenger of Allah!" She told her the news, and she fainted. Then the Quran was revealed to excuse her in Surah An-Nur: "Verily those who brought forth the slander (against Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ ) are a group among you." Until it reached "Those who brought forth the lie are the obstructing group." And it was revealed until "Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." Abu Bakr used to support a man called Mistah financially and to give him charity. He also used to maintain good relations with him. But after this incident, Abu Bakr said that he would never spend anything on Mistah again. Then the verse was revealed: "Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?" So the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to go to her, cheer her up, and inform her of what Allah had revealed. Abu Bakr went to her and told her of her excuse and of what Allah had revealed. She said, "It is not because of your praise or of your companion's praise."

[Machine] In a sale or donation she made, Aisha said, "By Allah, I will never speak to Ibn Zubayr again, ever. Abdullah ibn Zubayr interceded on his behalf when her seclusion with him became prolonged. Aisha said, "By Allah, I will not intercede for anyone in this matter, nor will I break the vow I made. When this went on for a long time, the Mawsur ibn Makhrama and Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth, both of whom belonged to the tribe of Zuhra, spoke to him. They said, "We adjure you by Allah, unless you let us in to see Aisha, it is not permissible for her to sever ties with me. Mawsur and Abdul Rahman both approached the door of Ibn Zubayr, wrapped in their garments until they sought permission to enter upon Aisha. They said, "Peace be upon the Prophet and the mercy of Allah, may we enter?" Aisha said, "Enter." They said, "All of us, O Mother of the Believers?" She said, "All of you, and Aisha did not know that Ibn Zubayr was with them. When they entered, Ibn Zubayr broke into the curtain and embraced Aisha and began beseeching her and crying. Mawsur and Abdul Rahman also beseeched Aisha, except for what she said to them and accepted from them. They said to her, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade what you have learned about seclusion. It is not permissible for a Muslim to seclude himself from his brother for more than three nights." When they continued to remind and urge Aisha, she began to cry and said, "I made a vow and vows are serious." They persisted until she spoke to Ibn Zubayr and freed forty slaves in fulfillment of her vow. After that, she would often mention her vow and cry until her tears wet her face veil.

When Ibn Zubair's migration became lengthy, Ibn Musawir bin Makhrama and Abdul Rahman bin Aswad bin Abd Yaghooth, both of whom were from the Banu Zuhrah tribe, spoke to him. They said, "We swear by Allah, we will not enter upon Aisha unless you allow us." Aisha told them to enter. They asked, "May we all enter, O Mother of the Believers?" She replied, "Yes, all of you enter and make sure Aisha doesn't know that Ibn Zubair is with you." When they entered, Ibn Zubair entered the curtain and embraced Aisha. He trembled and she tried to console him. Ibn Musawir bin Makhrama and Abdul Rahman bin Aswad also tried to console Aisha and begged her, "For the sake of Allah, speak to him and accept his apology." She accepted his apology. They told her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had forbidden migration, as she knew, and said, "It is not permissible for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three nights." When they persisted with Aisha, reminding and urging her, she trembled, reminded them, and wept, saying, "I made a vow, and a vow is a serious matter." They did not stop until she spoke to Ibn Zubair. Then she freed forty slaves as part of her vow. After she had freed the forty slaves, she would mention her vow and weep until her tears wet her veil.

[Machine] I saw Umar ibn Al-Khattab before he was struck by the days in Medina. He stood with Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman and Uthman ibn Hunayf and said, "How have you two managed to bear the burden of the earth that it cannot bear?" They said, "We have carried it by a command that it can bear." Hudhaifah said, "If I were to carry it, it would be weakened." Uthman ibn Hunayf said, "I have carried it by a command that it can bear, without any great favor." Umar then said, "See that you have not carried the burden of the earth that it cannot bear." They said, "No." Umar said, "If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq without needing any man after me." He said, "Only four things came upon him until he was struck." He said, "And between me and him, there is no one except Abdullah ibn Abbas in the morning." He said, "And he used to stand between the rows. If he saw any disorder among them, he would say, 'Stand still until there is no disorder among them.' Then he would proceed and say the takbir." He said, "And perhaps he would recite Surah Yusuf or An-Nahl or something similar in the first raka'a until the people gathered." He said, "And it was only that he would say the takbir." He said, "I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me or the dog has eaten me,' when he was stabbed. Then he flew out of the wound with a double-edged knife that would not pass by anyone to the right or left except that it would stab him, until he stabbed thirteen men and nine of them died. When he saw that, a Muslim man threw a cloak on him. When the assassin thought that he had taken hold of him, he slit his own throat." He said, "And Umar held the hand of Abdullah ibn Awf and brought him forward." He said, "Who will take care of Umar? He has seen what he has seen." He said, "Regarding the surroundings of the mosque, they did not know anything except that they had lost the voice of Umar while they were saying, 'Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah.' Abdul-Rahman ibn Awf led them in a light prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went for a while and then came back and said, 'The slave of Al-Mughirah killed him.' He said, 'Really?' After they all spoke with their tongues and prayed towards their qibla and performed the Hajj according to their rites, he was brought to his house. We then left with him." He said, "And it was as if the people had not been affected by any calamity before that day. Some were saying, 'There is no harm,' while others were saying, 'We fear for him.' So they brought some wine and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. Then they brought some milk and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They recognized that he was dead, and he mentioned this incident in his will and in the command to consult each other."
