32. Gifts (3/3)
Whenever a meal was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would ask whether it was a gift or Sadaqa (something given in charity). If he was told that it was Sadaqa, he would tell his companions to eat it, but if it was a gift, he would hurry to share it with them. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2576)
Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with food, he asked about it, If he was told that it was a gift, he ate out of that, and if he was told that it was a sadaqa he did not eat out of that. (Using translation from Muslim 1077)
[Machine] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a handful of bread and meat, and he asked, "What is this, O Salman?" I said, "It is charity." He did not eat and said to his companions, "Eat." Then I came to him with another handful of bread and meat, and he asked, "What is this, O Salman?" I said, "It is a gift." He ate and said, "We eat gifts, but we do not eat charity."
