I saw Marwan bin Al-Hakam sitting in the Mosque. So I came forward and sat by his side. He told us that Zaid bin Thabit had told him that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dictated to him the Divine Verse: "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and lives.' (4.95) Zaid said, "Ibn-Maktum came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was dictating to me that very Verse. On that Ibn Um Maktum said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! If I had power, I would surely take part in Jihad." He was a blind man. So Allah sent down revelation to His Apostle while his thigh was on mine and it became so heavy for me that I feared that my thigh would be broken. Then that state of the Prophet ﷺ was over after Allah revealed "...except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc.) (4.95)

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمْلَى عَلَيْهِ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَجَاءَهُ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَهُوَ يُمِلُّهَا عَلَىَّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ وَكَانَ رَجُلاً أَعْمَى فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ وَفَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَىَّ حَتَّى خِفْتُ أَنْ تَرُضَّ فَخِذِي ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ {غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

That the Prophet ﷺ dictated to him: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." Zaid added: Ibn Um Maktum came while the Prophet ﷺ was dictating to me and said, "O Allah's Apostle! By Allah, if I had the power to fight (in Allah's Cause), I would," and he was a blind man. So Allah revealed to his Apostle while his thigh was on my thigh, and his thigh became so heavy that I was afraid it might fracture my thigh. Then that state of the Prophet ﷺ passed and Allah revealed:-- "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc).

When the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)," (4.95) was revealed, the Prophet said, "Call so-and-so." That person came to him with an ink-pot and a wooden board or a shoulder scapula bone. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Write: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." Ibn Um Maktum who was sitting behind the Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am a blind man." So there was revealed in the place of that Verse, the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." (4.95)

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ادْعُوا فُلاَنًا فَجَاءَهُ وَمَعَهُ الدَّوَاةُ وَاللَّوْحُ أَوِ الْكَتِفُ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَخَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَا ضَرِيرٌ فَنَزَلَتْ مَكَانَهَا {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ }

There was revealed: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah.' (4.95) The Prophet ﷺ said, "Call Zaid for me and let him bring the board, the inkpot and the scapula bone (or the scapula bone and the ink pot)."' Then he said, "Write: 'Not equal are those Believers who sit..", and at that time ʿAmr bin Um Maktum, the blind man was sitting behind the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "O Allah's Apostle! What is your order For me (as regards the above Verse) as I am a blind man?" So, instead of the above Verse, the following Verse was revealed: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah.' (4.95)

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ} قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ادْعُ لِي زَيْدًا وَلْيَجِئْ بِاللَّوْحِ وَالدَّوَاةِ وَالْكَتِفِ أَوِ الْكَتِفِ وَالدَّوَاةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اكْتُبْ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ وَخَلْفَ ظَهْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ الأَعْمَى قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنِي فَإِنِّي رَجُلٌ ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ فَنَزَلَتْ مَكَانَهَا {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ {غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

"I saw Marwan bin Al-Hakam sitting in the Masjid, so I went over to him until I sat next to him. He informed us that Zaid bin Thabit informed him, that the Prophet ﷺ dictated: 'Not equal among the believers are those who sit and the Mujahidin in the cause of Allah.' He said: 'So Ibn Umm Maktum came and he was dictating to me that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! If I were capable of Jihad then I would participate in Jihad.' And he was a blind a man. So Allah revealed to His Messenger ﷺ - while his thigh was against my thigh - and it became so heavy that I was worried it was about to fracture my thigh. Then he was relieved of it, so Allah had revealed to him: Except those who are disabled."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَمْلَى عَلَيْهِ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَجَاءَهُ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَهُوَ يُمْلِيهَا عَلَىَّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ وَكَانَ رَجُلاً أَعْمَى فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ وَفَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي فَثَقُلَتْ حَتَّى هَمَّتْ تَرُضُّ فَخِذِي ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ( غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ )

"I saw Marwan bin Al-Hakam sitting and I came and sat with him. He told us that Zaid bin Thabit told him, that the following was revealed to Messenger of Allah ﷺ: (Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) and those who strive hard and fight in the cause of Allah), then Ibn Umm Maktum came when he was dictating it to me (Zaid), and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If I were able to go for Jihad I would go out for Jihad.' Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed to him - while his thigh was against mine, and became so heavy that I thought my thigh would break, until (the revelation) stopped -: 'Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame).'" [1] Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'i) said: This 'Abdur-Rahman bin Ishaq is tolerable, while 'Abdur-Rahman bin IShaq, from whom reports 'Ali bin Mushir, abu Mu'awiyah, and 'Abdul-Wahid bin Ziyad from An-Nu'man bin Sa'd - he is not trustworthy. أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَهُوَ يُمِلُّهَا عَلَىَّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ وَفَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَىَّ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنْ سَتُرَضُّ فَخِذِي ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ { غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ } قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ هَذَا لَيْسَ بِهِ بَأْسٌ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ يَرْوِي عَنْهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ وَعَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ لَيْسَ بِثِقَةٍ

"Sahl bin Sa'd said: 'I saw Marwan sitting in the Masjid so I went and sat beside him, and he told us that Zaid bin Thabit had told him, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dictated to him the words: [Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) and those who strive hard and fight in the cause of Allah]. Then Ibn umm Maktum came to him while he was dictating it to me (Zaid) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If I were able to go for Jihad I would go out for Jihad.' But he was a blind man. Then Allah revealed to His Messenger ﷺ - while his thigh was agaisnt my thigh, and (it became so heavy that) I thought my thigh would break, then it was lifted from him, and Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: 'Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame).'" رَأَيْتُ مَرْوَانَ جَالِسًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَقْبَلْتُ حَتَّى جَلَسْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَخْبَرَنَا أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمْلَى عَلَيْهِ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَجَاءَهُ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَهُوَ يُمِلُّهَا عَلَىَّ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ وَكَانَ رَجُلاً أَعْمَى فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ وَفَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى هَمَّتْ تَرُضُّ فَخِذِي ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ { غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ }

[AI] He heard Al-Bara'ah saying about this verse: "The believers who sit at home are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah." "When the following was revealed: 'Not equal are those of the believers who sit (4:95)' 'Amr bin Umm Maktum came to the Prophet ﷺ." He said: "He was blind, so he said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What do you order me with? Indeed my vision is disabled.' So Allah [Most High] revealed this Ayah: 'Except those who are disabled.' So the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Bring me a shoulder bone and inkwell' - or 'Bring me a tablet and an inkwell.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3031)

كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ} [النساء 95] {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [النساء 95] فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ اللهِ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَكِنْ بِي مِنَ الزَّمَانَةِ وَقَدْ تَرَى وَذَهَبَ بَصَرِي قَالَ زَيْدٌ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَرُضَّهَا فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [النساء 95]

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «ادْعُ لِي زَيْدًا وَيَجِيءُ مَعَهُ بِاللَّوْحِ وَالدَّوَاةِ أَوْ بِالْكَتِفِ وَالدَّوَاةِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «اكْتُبْ لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» قَالَ وَخَلْفَ ظَهْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ الْأَعْمَى قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنِي فَإِنِّي رَجُلٌ ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ؟ قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ فَأُنْزِلَتْ مَكَانَهَا {غَيْرَ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

Zaid ibn Thabit said, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on mine and pressed it on his thigh until I felt the weight, fearing it may dislocate. Then, when the revelation was removed from him, he said, "Write: 'Those believers who stay behind are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah, except for those who are disabled, and those who strive in the cause of Allah.'"

كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ} » قَالَ فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَبِي مِنَ الزَّمَانَةِ مَا تَرَى قَدْ ذَهَبَ بَصَرِي قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَرَفَّضَ فَلَمَّا سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ قَالَ «اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ} »

He said: 'So Ibn Umm Maktum came and he was dictating to me that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! If I were capable of Jihad then I would participate in Jihad.' And he was a blind a man. So Allah revealed to His Messenger ﷺ - while his thigh was against my thigh - and it became so heavy that I was worried it was about to fracture my thigh. Then he was relieved of it, so Allah had revealed to him: Except those who are disabled." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3033)

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَمْلَى عَلَيْهِ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ} {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ} فَقَالَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ عَلَيْهِ وَفَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُهُ عَلَيَّ حَتَّى كَادَتْ فَخِذِي تَرُضُّ ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ {غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

[AI] On the authority of Sahl bin Sa'd Al-Sa'idi, the companion of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ , who narrated from Marwan bin Al-Hakam, from Zaid bin Thabit, who said: "I used to sit beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , with my thigh touching his thigh, and he would recite to me, 'The believers who do not go for Jihad are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives.' And Ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind, was sitting there, listening. So he said: 'By Allah! If I had the ability, I would surely participate in Jihad, O Messenger of Allah!' Then Allah revealed to His Messenger ﷺ the verse: 'Not equal are those believers who sit at home and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives, except for those who are disabled.' "

عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ صَاحِبِ نَبِيِّ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ إِنِّي لَجَالِسٌ إِلَى جَنْبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَخِذِي تَحْتَ فَخِذِهِ وَهُوَ يُمْلِي عَلَيَّ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْفُسِهِمْ} وَابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ جَالِسٌ يَسْمَعُ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنَ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيَرُضُّها ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

I saw Marwan bin Al-Hakam sitting in the Mosque. So I came forward and sat by his side. He told us that Zaid bin Thabit had told him that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dictated to him the Divine Verse: "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and lives.' (4.95) Zaid said, "Ibn-Maktum came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was dictating to me that very Verse. On that Ibn Um Maktum said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! If I had power, I would surely take part in Jihad." He was a blind man. So Allah sent down revelation to His Apostle while his thigh was on mine and it became so heavy for me that I feared that my thigh would be broken. Then that state of the Prophet ﷺ was over after Allah revealed "...except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc.) (4.95) (Using translation from Bukhārī 2832)

[AI] I was with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when the verse "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen [striving and fighting] in the cause of Allah" [Quran 4:95] was revealed. Ibn Umm Maktum came to him while I was writing it and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have been afflicted by harm and if I were able to fight, I would have fought." Zaid bin Thabit said, "So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , placed one of his legs on my thigh, making it heavy, until I thought it would break, then he said to me, 'Write: "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen."' This is the wording of the Qantari Hadith."
