When the Divine Inspiration: "Those of the believers who sit (at home), was revealed the Prophet ﷺ sent for Zaid (bin Thabit) who came with a shoulder-blade and wrote on it. Ibn Um-Maktum complained about his blindness and on that the following revelation came: "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive hard and fight in the Way of Allah with their wealth and lives)." (4.95)

سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ ؓ يَقُولُ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} دَعَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْدًا فَجَاءَ بِكَتِفٍ فَكَتَبَهَا وَشَكَا ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ ضَرَارَتَهُ فَنَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ }

When the Verse:-- "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)" (4.95) was revealed, Allah Apostle called for Zaid who wrote it. In the meantime Ibn Um Maktum came and complained of his blindness, so Allah revealed: "Except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame..." etc.) (4.95)

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} دَعَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْدًا فَكَتَبَهَا فَجَاءَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَشَكَا ضَرَارَتَهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ {غَيْرَ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

When the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)," (4.95) was revealed, the Prophet said, "Call so-and-so." That person came to him with an ink-pot and a wooden board or a shoulder scapula bone. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Write: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." Ibn Um Maktum who was sitting behind the Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am a blind man." So there was revealed in the place of that Verse, the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." (4.95)

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ادْعُوا فُلاَنًا فَجَاءَهُ وَمَعَهُ الدَّوَاةُ وَاللَّوْحُ أَوِ الْكَتِفُ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَخَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَا ضَرِيرٌ فَنَزَلَتْ مَكَانَهَا {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ }

There was revealed: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah.' (4.95) The Prophet ﷺ said, "Call Zaid for me and let him bring the board, the inkpot and the scapula bone (or the scapula bone and the ink pot)."' Then he said, "Write: 'Not equal are those Believers who sit..", and at that time ʿAmr bin Um Maktum, the blind man was sitting behind the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "O Allah's Apostle! What is your order For me (as regards the above Verse) as I am a blind man?" So, instead of the above Verse, the following Verse was revealed: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah.' (4.95)

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ} قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ادْعُ لِي زَيْدًا وَلْيَجِئْ بِاللَّوْحِ وَالدَّوَاةِ وَالْكَتِفِ أَوِ الْكَتِفِ وَالدَّوَاةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اكْتُبْ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ وَخَلْفَ ظَهْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ الأَعْمَى قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنِي فَإِنِّي رَجُلٌ ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ فَنَزَلَتْ مَكَانَهَا {لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ {غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

" Those who sit (at home) from among the believers and those who go out for Jihad in the way of Allah are not aqual" (iv. 95). (He said that) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Zaid (to write the verse). He brought a shoulder-blade (of a slaughtered camel) and inscribed it (the verse) thereon. The son of Umm Maktum complained of his blindness to the Prophet ﷺ. (At this) descended the revelation:" Those of the believers who sit (at home) without any trouble (illness, incapacity, disability)" (iv. 95). The tradition has been handed down through two other chains of transmitters.

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ الْبَرَاءَ يَقُولُ فِي هَذِهِ الآيَةِ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْدًا فَجَاءَ بِكَتِفٍ يَكْتُبُهَا فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ ضَرَارَتَهُ فَنَزَلَتْ { لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ} قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَخْبَرَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ فِي هَذِهِ الآيَةِ لاَ يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ الْبَرَاءِ وَقَالَ ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ سَعْدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ

"When the following was revealed: 'Not equal are those of the believers who sit (4:95)' 'Amr bin Umm Maktum came to the Prophet ﷺ." He said: "He was blind, so he said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What do you order me with? Indeed my vision is disabled.' So Allah [Most High] revealed this Ayah: 'Except those who are disabled.' So the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Bring me a shoulder bone and inkwell' - or 'Bring me a tablet and an inkwell.'"

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ (لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ) جَاءَ عَمْرُو ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ وَكَانَ ضَرِيرَ الْبَصَرِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا تَأْمُرُنِي إِنِّي ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى هَذِهِ الآيَةَ ( غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ ) الآيَةَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ائْتُونِي بِالْكَتِفِ وَالدَّوَاةِ أَوِ اللَّوْحِ وَالدَّوَاةِ

[AI] I heard Al-Bara'a saying when this verse was revealed {Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees.} [Quran 4:95], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Zaid and he brought a shoulder blade, then the Prophet ﷺ wrote it down. Ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind, complained about its harm, so the verse was revealed {Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives except for the disabled, Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind].} [Quran 4:95].

[AI] He heard Al-Bara'ah saying about this verse: "The believers who sit at home are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ commanded Zaid to write it down, so he brought a shoulder blade and wrote it. Then, Ibn Umm Maktum complained to him about his difficult situation, so the verse was revealed: "The believers who sit at home are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah except for the disabled." (Quran 4:95)

[AI] "When this verse was revealed, 'Those who stay behind from the believers are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah' [Surah An-Nisa, 4: 95] and 'And those who strive in the cause of Allah' [Surah An-Nisa, 4: 95], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Zaid and he brought a shoulder blade and wrote it (the verse) down. لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} [النساء 95] {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [النساء 95] دَعَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ زَيْدًا فَجَاءَ بِكَتِفٍ فَكَتَبَهَا قَالَ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَشَكَاضَرَارَتَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ {غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ } [النساء 95]

"When the following was revealed: 'Not equal are those of the believers who sit (4:95)' 'Amr bin Umm Maktum came to the Prophet ﷺ." He said: "He was blind, so he said: 'O Messenger of Allah! [AI] "O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me? I am blind." He said, so the verse (Surah An-Nisa 95) was revealed: "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled." He said, then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Bring me a shoulder and a medicine or a plank and a medicine."

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا تَأْمُرُنِي؟ إِنِّي ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ {غَيْرُ أُولِي} [النساء 95] الضَّرَرِ قَالَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ائْتُونِي بِالْكَتِفِ وَالدَّوَاةِ أَوِ اللَّوْحِ وَالدَّوَاةِ

[AI] I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Pray for me that Zaid may come or bring the shoulder and water-pot or the tablet and water-pot. Write, 'The sitters among the believers are not equal to the fighters in the cause of Allah.'" (Quran 4:95) He said, "This verse was revealed in this way." Ibn Umm Maktum was sitting behind him and he said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have a problem with my eyes." So the verse was revealed before he left, 'except for those disabled by injury.' (Quran 4:95)

[AI] "I used to write for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said to me, 'Write: "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen in the cause of Allah" (Quran 4:95).' Then Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I love to participate in jihad for the sake of Allah, but I have lost my eyesight and cannot see.' Zaid said, 'So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me to place his hand on my thigh, and I was afraid of offending him so I hesitated. Then he said, "Write: 'Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled and the mujahideen in the cause of Allah'" (Quran 4:95).'"

كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ} [النساء 95] {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [النساء 95] فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ اللهِ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَكِنْ بِي مِنَ الزَّمَانَةِ وَقَدْ تَرَى وَذَهَبَ بَصَرِي قَالَ زَيْدٌ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَرُضَّهَا فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [النساء 95]

[AI] I was writing in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "Write: 'Those believers who stay behind are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah.'" Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I love to fight in the cause of Allah, but I have lost my sight since a long time ago." Zaid ibn Thabit said, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on mine and pressed it on his thigh until I felt the weight, fearing it may dislocate. Then, when the revelation was removed from him, he said, "Write: 'Those believers who stay behind are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah, except for those who are disabled, and those who strive in the cause of Allah.'"

كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ} » قَالَ فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَبِي مِنَ الزَّمَانَةِ مَا تَرَى قَدْ ذَهَبَ بَصَرِي قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَرَفَّضَ فَلَمَّا سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ قَالَ «اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ} »

[AI] On the authority of Sahl bin Sa'd Al-Sa'idi, the companion of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ , who narrated from Marwan bin Al-Hakam, from Zaid bin Thabit, who said: "I used to sit beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , with my thigh touching his thigh, and he would recite to me, 'The believers who do not go for Jihad are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives.' And Ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind, was sitting there, listening. So he said: 'By Allah! If I had the ability, I would surely participate in Jihad, O Messenger of Allah!' Then Allah revealed to His Messenger ﷺ the verse: 'Not equal are those believers who sit at home and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives, except for those who are disabled.' "

عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ صَاحِبِ نَبِيِّ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ إِنِّي لَجَالِسٌ إِلَى جَنْبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَخِذِي تَحْتَ فَخِذِهِ وَهُوَ يُمْلِي عَلَيَّ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْفُسِهِمْ} وَابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ جَالِسٌ يَسْمَعُ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ لَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنَ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُهُ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيَرُضُّها ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ}

[AI] I was writing to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to me, "Write: 'The ones who stay behind from the believers are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah.' And 'Abdullah bin Umm Maktum came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I love Jihad in the cause of Allah, but I have a condition that caused my eyesight to deteriorate.' Zaid bin Thabit said, 'I conveyed his words.' Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on my thigh, and I feared that it might hurt, and he said, 'The ones who stay behind from the believers are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah, except for the disabled individuals.'"

كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} {وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أَحَبُّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَكِنْ بِي مِنَ الزَّمَانَةِ مَا تَرَى ذَهَبَ بَصَرِي قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ يَرُضَّهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ}

[AI] When the verse "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled" [Quran 4:95] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed Zaid to write it. [AI] I was with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when the verse "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen [striving and fighting] in the cause of Allah" [Quran 4:95] was revealed. Ibn Umm Maktum came to him while I was writing it and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have been afflicted by harm and if I were able to fight, I would have fought." Zaid bin Thabit said, "So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , placed one of his legs on my thigh, making it heavy, until I thought it would break, then he said to me, 'Write: "Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen."' This is the wording of the Qantari Hadith."

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ قَالَ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَأَنَا أَكْتُبُهَا فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ تَرَى مَا بِعَيْنِيَّ مِنَ الضَّرَرِ وَلَوْ أَسْتَطِيعُ الْجِهَادَ لَجَاهَدْتُ قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ فَثَقُلَتْ فَخِذُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى فَخِذِي حَتَّى هَمَّتْ أَنْ تَرُضَّهَا ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ لِي اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ} [النساء 95] لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الْقَنْطَرِيِّ

"عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: ادْعُ ليِ زَيْدًا وَقُلْ لَهُ يَجِيءُ

بِالْكَتِفِ وَالدَّوَاةِ واللَّوح، فَقَالَ: اكْتُبْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ} فَقَالَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ: يَا رَسُولَ الله بعِيْنِي ضَرَرٌ. فَنَزَلَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَبْرحَ (غَيْر أُولِي الضَّرَرِ) " .
