Never did I see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observing supererogatory prayer sitting till one year before his death when he would observe Nafl prayer in a sitting position, and he would recite the Surah (of the Qur'an) in such a slow-measured tone (that duration of its recital) became more lengthy than the one longer than this.

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَّى فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ بِعَامٍ فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا وَكَانَ يَقْرَأُ بِالسُّورَةِ فَيُرَتِّلُهَا حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا

"I did not see Messenger of Allah (S) praying voluntary prayers sitting until the year before he died. Then he would perform Salat for the voluntary prayers sitting, and he would recite a Surah and prolong it such that it would be longer than the longest of them."

عَنْ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَّى فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ ﷺ بِعَامٍ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا وَيَقْرَأُ بِالسُّورَةِ وَيُرَتِّلُهَا حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ وَأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ

"I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offer his voluntary prayers sitting down until one year before his death. Then he used to pray sitting down, reciting the surah so slowly that it seemed to be longer than a surah that is longer."

مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَّى فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا قَطُّ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ بِعَامٍ فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا يَقْرَأُ بِالسُّورَةِ فَيُرَتِّلُهَا حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا

[AI] "Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said, 'I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until close to the time of his passing, which was about a year or two before his death. I saw him praying while sitting, reciting the Surah until it became longer than any other Surah.'"

أَنَّ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ «لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُتَوَفَّى بِعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ أَوْ عَامَيْنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَيُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

that she said, "I never saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ pray his supererogatory prayers while sitting; until a year before his passing when he would his supererogatory prayers while sitting and reciting the sūrah in ˹such a slow˺ measured manner that it became longer than his ˹usual˺ longer ones."

[AI] He informed him that Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, informed him that she had never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until a year or two before his death.

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي جَالِسًا حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ بِعَامٍ أَوْ عَامَيْنِ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from as-Sa'ib ibn Yazid from al Muttalib ibn Abi Wadaa as-Sahmi that Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying nawafil sitting, until a year before his death, when he began to pray them sitting. He would recite the sura with a measured slowness so that it would seem to be longer than other suras which were actually longer than it."

[AI] Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said, "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until a year before his death. Then I saw him praying while sitting and reciting the Surah until its length became greater than the length he used to recite."

أَنَّ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ «لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ حَتَّى كَانَ ﷺ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَيُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

[AI] She said, "If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in his sujud (prostration) and recited a surah, he would recite it with such a slow and measured pace, that it was longer than the original length of the surah itself."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ «إِنْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا فَيَقْرَأُ بِالسُّورَةِ فَيُرَتِّلُهَا حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

[AI] "I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until a year or two before his death. He used to pray in his Subhah (prayer beads) while sitting, reciting the Surah until it became longer than its usual length."

«لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى قَاعِدًا حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ أَوِ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ جَالِسًا وَيُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِي قِرَاءَتِهِ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

[AI] Narrated by Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she informed him saying, "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until a year before his death. He would pray in his tasbeeh (subh) while sitting, reciting the Surah slowly, making it longer than it actually was."

عَنْ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْهُ قَالَتْ «مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا قَطُّ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ قَاعِدًا وَيَقْرَأُ بِالسُّورَةِ فَيُرَتِّلُهَا حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

[AI] "I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting in his prayer mat until one or two years before his death. I saw him praying while sitting in his prayer mat and reciting the Surah until his recitation of it became longer than the length of the Surah itself."

«مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَاعِدًا فِي سُبْحَتِهِ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ أَوِ اثْنَيْنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَيُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ قِرَاءَتُهَا إِيَّاهَا أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

[AI] "Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said: 'I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying in his Sibha (prayer beads) until he was close to passing away a year or two, so I saw him praying seated with his Sibha, reciting the Surah until his recitation was longer than any other recitation.'"

عَنْ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ «لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَاعِدًا فِي سُبْحَتِهِ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُتَوَفَّى بِعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ أَوِ اثْنَيْنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فِي سُبْحَتِهِ يُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِي قِرَاءَتِهِ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»

[AI] Narrated by Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , she said: "I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until it was a year or two before he passed away. I saw him praying while sitting and reciting the Surah until his recitation in the sitting position became longer than his recitation in the standing position."

عَنْ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ «لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فِي سُبْحَتِهِ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُتَوَفَّى بِعَامٍ أَوْ عَامَيْنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَيُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِي قِرَاءَتِهِ إِيَّاهَا أَطْوَلَ مِنْ قِرَاءَتِهِ قَائِمًا»

[AI] "Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said, 'I have never seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying while sitting until a year or two before Allah took his soul. I then saw him praying while sitting and reciting the Surah until it became longer than its original length.'"

أَنَّ حَفْصَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ «لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ حَتَّى كَانَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَتَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ بِعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ أَوِ اثْنَيْنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يُصَلِّي فِي سُبْحَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ يُرَتِّلُ السُّورَةَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَطْوَلَ مِنْ أَطْوَلَ مِنْهَا»
