We used to salute during prayer and talk about our needs. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him praying. I saluted him, but he did not respond to me. I recalled what happened to me in the past and in the present. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he said to me: Allah, the Almighty, creates new command as He wishes, and Allah, the Exalted, has sent a fresh command that you must not talk during prayer. He then returned my salutation.

كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَنَأْمُرُ بِحَاجَتِنَا فَقَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَىَّ السَّلاَمَ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ قَدْ أَحْدَثَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ أَنْ لاَ تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَرَدَّ عَلَىَّ السَّلاَمَ

"We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ with salam and he would return our salam, until we came back from the land of Ethiopia. I greeted him with salam and he did not return my greeting,a nd I started to wonder why. So I sat down; and when he finished praying, he said: 'Allah (SWT) decrees what He wills, and He has decreed what we should not speak during the prayer.'"

"We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ with salam and he would return our salam, until we came back from the land of Ethiopia. I greeted him with salam and he did not return my greeting,a nd I started to wonder why. [AI] "We used to speak during prayer, greet each other, and advise one another about our needs. So, I approached the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him while he was praying, but he did not respond to me. He seized my hand and prevented me from moving forward or speaking. After he finished the prayer, he said, 'Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, speaks and decrees whatever He wills, and He has commanded that no one should speak during the prayer.'"

كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيُسَلِّمُ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَيُوصِي أَحَدُنَا بِالْحَاجَةِ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

[AI] We were talking during the prayer, so I approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him, but he did not respond to me. He took hold of what had happened and what was said and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah speaks to His Prophet according to His will." Shu'bah said, "I believe he said from what He wills," and indeed, from what was revealed to His Prophet ﷺ is that you should not speak during the prayer.

كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ لِنَبِيِّهِ مَا شَاءَ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَدْ قَالَ مِمَّا شَاءَ وَإِنَّ مِمَّا أَحْدَثَ لِنَبِيِّهِ ﷺ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

[AI] Abdullah, we used to greet the Prophet ﷺ and he would respond to us during prayer. But when we came from the land of Abyssinia, I greeted him and he didn't reply. He grabbed me and held me tightly until he finished praying. I said to him, "You used to respond to us." He ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah speaks whatever He wills, and He has ordained that you do not speak during prayer."

عَبْدُ اللَّهِ كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا يَعْنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ جِئْنَا مِنْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَرُبَ وَ بَعُدَ فَجَلَسْتُ حَتَّى قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ تَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ مَا شَاءَ وَقَدْ أَحْدَثَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ قَضَاءً أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ»

[AI] We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prayer, and he would respond to us before we reached the land of Habasha. So when we returned from beside Najashi, I went to him while he was praying and greeted him, but he did not respond to my greeting. He caught hold of me, both near and far, and I sat waiting for him. When he finished the prayer, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I greeted you while you were praying, and you did not respond to my greeting." He replied, "Verily, Allah speaks to me whenever He wills, and He has commanded us not to speak in prayer."

كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا قَبْلَ أَنْ نَأْتِيَ أَرْضَ الْحَبَشَةِ فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ النَّجَاشِيِّ أَتَيْتُهُ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَرُبَ وَمَا بَعُدَ فَجَلَسْتُ أَنْتَظِرُهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْكَ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي فَلَمْ تَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ * فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَقَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا نَتَكَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ»

[AI] We used to talk during prayer, greeting each other and indicating our needs. One day, I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying, so I greeted him but he did not respond to me. He gestured to me what had happened and what was said. When he finished, he said, "Indeed, Allah speaks of His affairs as He wills, and He has informed me that you should not speak during prayer."

كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ يُسَلِّمُ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَيُومِئُ أَحَدُنَا بِالْحَاجَةِ فَجِئْتُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَتَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ»

[AI] Ibn Masud, we used to say salaam to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying, and he would respond to us. But when I returned from Abyssinia, I said salaam to him and he did not respond to me. He then started narrating to me everything, whatever had passed and what happened in my absence. Then I waited for him until he finished his prayer, and I mentioned that incident to him. He said: Verily, Allah speaks whatever He wills and He has spoken to me. And He informed me that I should not speak during the prayer.

ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَيَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا فَلَمَّا جِئْتُ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا فَأَخَذَنِي مَا تَقَدَّمَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ ثُمَّ انْتَظَرْتُهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ يُحَدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَإِنَّهُ قَضَى أَوْ قَالَ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

[AI] We used to speak during prayer and greet each other, and one of us would indicate to his companion about a need. So, one day I came and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying, so I greeted him but he did not respond to me. He held me by the shoulders and told me what was before and what will happen. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he said, "Verily, Allah speaks of His affairs as He wills, and indeed He has ordered that you do not speak during the prayer."

كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيُسَلِّمُ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَيُومِئُ أَحَدُنَا لِصَاحِبِهِ بِالْحَاجَةِ فَجِئْتُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَقَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ»

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَحَدَثَ شَيْءٌ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ لِنَبِيِّهِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَإِنْ مِمَّا أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

[AI] We used to converse during prayer and greet each other, and one of us would nod indicating a need. So, one day I came while the Prophet ﷺ was praying and I greeted him, but he did not respond. He grabbed me by my clothes and informed me of what had happened and what was said. When he finished, he said, "Indeed, Allah ﷻ speaks of His affairs as He pleases, and He has informed us that we should not talk during prayer."

كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيُسَلِّمُ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَيُومِئُ أَحَدُنَا بِالْحَاجَةِ قَالَ فَجِئْتُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

We used to salute during prayer and talk about our needs. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him praying. I saluted him, but he did not respond to me. [AI] We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prayer before we came to the land of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). He would respond to our greetings while he was in prayer. But when we returned from Abyssinia, I went to greet him and found him in prayer. I greeted him, but he did not respond to me. He grabbed me by the upper part of my garment and the lower part, sat me down until he finished his prayer. Then I went to greet him, and he said, "Verily, Allah, whose praise is glorified, speaks from His command whatever He wills. And verily, one of the things that Allah has forbidden is not to speak in prayer." This is all attributed to us based on strong evidence.
