We used to salute during prayer and talk about our needs. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him praying. I saluted him, but he did not respond to me. I recalled what happened to me in the past and in the present. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he said to me: Allah, the Almighty, creates new command as He wishes, and Allah, the Exalted, has sent a fresh command that you must not talk during prayer. He then returned my salutation.  

أبو داود:٩٢٤حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

[Machine] "We used to speak during prayer, greet each other, and advise one another about our needs. So, I approached the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him while he was praying, but he did not respond to me. He seized my hand and prevented me from moving forward or speaking. After he finished the prayer, he said, 'Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, speaks and decrees whatever He wills, and He has commanded that no one should speak during the prayer.'"

[Machine] We were talking during the prayer, so I approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him, but he did not respond to me. He took hold of what had happened and what was said and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah speaks to His Prophet according to His will." Shu'bah said, "I believe he said from what He wills," and indeed, from what was revealed to His Prophet ﷺ is that you should not speak during the prayer.

[Machine] Abdullah, we used to greet the Prophet ﷺ and he would respond to us during prayer. But when we came from the land of Abyssinia, I greeted him and he didn't reply. He grabbed me and held me tightly until he finished praying. I said to him, "You used to respond to us." He ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah speaks whatever He wills, and He has ordained that you do not speak during prayer."

[Machine] We used to greet the Prophet ﷺ while he was in prayer, and he would respond to us before we reached the land of Habasha. So when we returned from beside Najashi, I went to him while he was praying and greeted him, but he did not respond to my greeting. He caught hold of me, both near and far, and I sat waiting for him. When he finished the prayer, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I greeted you while you were praying, and you did not respond to my greeting." He replied, "Verily, Allah speaks to me whenever He wills, and He has commanded us not to speak in prayer."

He gestured to me what had happened and what was said. When he finished, he said, "Indeed, Allah speaks of His affairs as He wills, and He has informed me that you should not speak during prayer."

[Machine] Ibn Masud, we used to say salaam to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying, and he would respond to us. But when I returned from Abyssinia, I said salaam to him and he did not respond to me. He then started narrating to me everything, whatever had passed and what happened in my absence. Then I waited for him until he finished his prayer, and I mentioned that incident to him. He said: Verily, Allah speaks whatever He wills and He has spoken to me. And He informed me that I should not speak during the prayer.

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he said, "Verily, Allah speaks of His affairs as He wills, and indeed He has ordered that you do not speak during the prayer."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah informed His Prophet of His affairs as He wills, and one of the things He has informed is that you should not speak in prayer."  

البيهقي:٣٣٤٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ فُورَكٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَحَدَثَ شَيْءٌ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ لِنَبِيِّهِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَإِنْ مِمَّا أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

[Machine] We used to converse during prayer and greet each other, and one of us would nod indicating a need. So, one day I came while the Prophet ﷺ was praying and I greeted him, but he did not respond. He grabbed me by my clothes and informed me of what had happened and what was said. When he finished, he said, "Indeed, Allah ﷻ speaks of His affairs as He pleases, and He has informed us that we should not talk during prayer."  

البيهقي:٣٣٤٦أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الْمُقْرِئُ أنبأ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ أنبأ زَائِدَةُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

كُنَّا نَتَكَلَّمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيُسَلِّمُ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَيُومِئُ أَحَدُنَا بِالْحَاجَةِ قَالَ فَجِئْتُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ فَأَخَذَنِي مَا قَدُمَ وَمَا حَدُثَ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ يُحْدِثُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَحْدَثَ أَنْ لَا تَكَلَّمُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ

"كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِىِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِى فَأخَذَنى الصَّلَاة، فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا، فَلَمَّا جئْتُ منْ أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَىَّ، فَأَحْزَنِّى مَا تَقَدَّمَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ، ثُمَّ انْتَظَرْتُهُ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ، ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الله يُحْدثُ منْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا، وَمَا لَنا وَأَنَّهُ قَدْ قَضَى، - أَو قَالَ أَحْدَثَ - أَنْ لا تَكَلَّمُوا فِى الصَّلَاةِ".
