I asked the Prophet ﷺ "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, 'To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's cause." ʿAbdullah added, "I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Prophet ﷺ would have told me more."

The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Which is the best deed?" He said, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle." He was then asked, "Which is the next (in goodness)?" He said, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." He was then asked, "Which is the next?" He said, "To perform Hajj-Mabrur. "

He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents." I further asked, what is next in goodness?" He replied, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." I did not ask Messenger of Allah ﷺ anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.

I heard Abi ʿAmr 'Ash-Shaibani saying, "The owner of this house." he pointed to ʿAbdullah's house, "said, 'I asked the Prophet ﷺ 'Which deed is loved most by Allah?" He replied, 'To offer prayers at their early (very first) stated times.' " ʿAbdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "To be good and dutiful to one's parents," ʿAbdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "To participate in Jihad for Allah's Cause." ʿAbdullah added, "The Prophet ﷺ narrated to me these three things, and if I had asked more, he would have told me more."
أَخْبَرَنَا صَاحِبُ هَذِهِ الدَّارِ وَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى دَارِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَىُّ الْعَمَلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ قَالَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىُّ قَالَ ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىّ قَالَ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي بِهِنَّ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ "What deeds are the best?" The Prophet ﷺ said: "(1) To perform the (daily compulsory) prayers at their (early) stated fixed times, (2) to be good and dutiful to one's own parents, (3) and to participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause."
أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَىُّ الأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ الصَّلاَةُ لِوَقْتِهَا وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
Prayer at its appointed hour. I (again) said: Then what? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Kindness to the parents. I (again) said: Then what? He replied: Earnest endeavour (Jihad) in the cause of Allah. And I would have not ceased asking more questions but out of regard (for his feelings).

I said: Messenger of Allah, which of the deeds (takes one) nearer to Paradise? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Prayer at its proper time, I said: What next, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Kindness to the parents. I said: What next? He replied: Jihad in the cause of Allah.
قُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَىُّ الأَعْمَالِ أَقْرَبُ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى مَوَاقِيتِهَا قُلْتُ وَمَاذَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ قَالَ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ قُلْتُ وَمَاذَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ قَالَ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
The owner of this house told me that he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Which of the deeds are liked by Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Prayer at its proper time. I (again) said: What next? He replied: Then goodness to the parents. I (again) said: What then? He replied: Then Jihad in the cause of Allah. He ('Abdullah) said: This is what I was told (by the Holy Prophet). Had I questioned further, he would have made additions for me.
حَدَّثَنِي صَاحِبُ هَذِهِ الدَّارِ وَأَشَارَ إِلَى دَارِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَىُّ الأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ قَالَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَىٌّ قَالَ ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي بِهِنَّ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
The best of' the deeds or deed is the (observance of) prayer at its proper time and kindness to the parents.
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَفْضَلُ الأَعْمَالِ أَوِ الْعَمَلِ الصَّلاَةُ لِوَقْتِهَا وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ
"A man said to Ibn Mas'ud: 'Which deed is most virtuous?' He said: 'I asked Messenger of Allah (that). He said: "Salat at the beginning of its time." I asked him: "What is after that O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Being dutiful to one's parents." I said: "What is after that [O Messenger of Allah]?" He said: "Jihad in the Way of Allah."
سَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى مَوَاقِيتِهَا قُلْتُ وَمَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ قُلْتُ وَمَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَالْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
"I asked the Messenger of Allah: 'O Messenger of Allah! Which is the most virtuous of deeds?' He said: 'Salat during its appropriate time.' I said: 'Then what, O Messenger of Allah?' "I heard Abu 'Amr Ash-Shaibani say: 'The owner of this house - and he pointed to the house of 'Abdullah - said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'Which deed is most beloved to Allah, may He be exalted?' He said: 'Prayer offered on time, honoring one's parents, and Jihad in the cause of Allah.'"
حَدَّثَنَا صَاحِبُ هَذِهِ الدَّارِ وَأَشَارَ إِلَى دَارِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَىُّ الْعَمَلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى قَالَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ﷻ

I said, "Then what?" He said, "Engaging in Jihad for the sake of Allah, even if you acquire more, it will only increase you in goodness."
قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ ﷻ؟ قَالَ صَلِّ الصَّلَاةَ لِمَوَاقِيتِهَا قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
[AI] "We were told by the owner of this house, who pointed with his hand towards the house of Abdullah, and he named it for us. He said, 'I asked the Messenger of Allahﷺ which action is most beloved to Allah the Almighty?' He said, 'Praying on time.' Al-Hajjaj said, 'Then what?' He said, 'Being good to parents.' He said, 'Then what?' He said, 'Fighting in the cause of Allah, even if I were to do more, it would increase me.'"

Muslim relied on Ali bin Hafs Al-Madaini in his argument."
سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ فِي أَوَّلِ وَقْتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي» «قَدْ رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ جَمَاعَةٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ هَذِهِ اللَّفْظَةَ غَيْرُ حَجَّاجِ بْنِ الشَّاعِرِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَفْصٍ وَحَجَّاجٌ حَافِظٌ ثِقَةٌ وَقَدِ احْتَجَّ مُسْلِمٌ بِعَلِيِّ بْنِ حَفْصٍ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ وَمِنْهَا»
[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "Which action is the best?" He replied, "Offering the prayer at its earliest time."
سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ فِي أَوَّلِ وَقْتِهَا»
ذِكْرُ الْبَيَانِ بِأَنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْأَعْمَالِ هُوَ الْإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ
[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, which action is the best?" He said, "Faith in Allah and striving in His path."
قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ وَجِهَادٌ فِي سَبِيلِهِ»
ذِكْرُ الْبَيَانِ بِأَنَّ الْوَاوَ الَّذِي فِي خَبَرِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ الَّذِي ذَكَرْنَاهُ لَيْسَ بِوَاوِ وَصْلٍ، وَإِنَّمَا هُوَ وَاوٌ بِمَعْنَى ثُمَّ
"A man asked the Prophet 'O Messenger of Allah, which deed is best?' He said: 'Jihad in the cause of Allah.' He said: 'Then what?' He said: 'then Hajj Al-Mabrir.''' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2624)
سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الْإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ» قَالَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» قَالَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ حَجٌّ مَبْرُورٌ»

Prayer at its appointed hour. I (again) said: Then what? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Kindness to the parents. I (again) said: Then what? He replied: Earnest endeavour (Jihad) in the cause of Allah. And I would have not ceased asking more questions but out of regard (for his feelings). (Using translation from Muslim 85a)

[AI] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, which actions are most beloved to Allah?" He replied, "Prayer at its designated times." I said, "Then what?" He said, "Showing kindness to parents." I said, "Then what?" He said, "Jihad (striving in the cause of Allah)." And if I had asked him further, he would have continued to give me more.
قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَوَاتُ لِمَوَاقِيتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ» وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
ذِكْرُ الْبَيَانِ بِأَنَّ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا مِنْ أَحَبِّ الْأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللَّهِ جَلَّ وَعَلَا
[AI] He asked the Prophet SAW which deeds are most beloved to Allah. The Prophet SAW replied, "Prayer at its appointed time." He asked again, "Then what?" The Prophet SAW said, "Good treatment of parents." He asked again, "Then what?" The Prophet SAW said, "Jihad in the cause of Allah." He said, "He mentioned these to me and if I had asked for more, he would have told me more."
أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيُّ؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» قَالَ خَصَّنِي بِهِنَّ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي

He said, "Showing kindness to parents." I said, "Then what, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "To prevent harm to people from your tongue." Then he remained silent, and if I had asked him more, he would have said more to me.
سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى مِيقَاتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «أَنْ يَسْلَمَ النَّاسُ مِنْ لِسَانِكَ» ثُمَّ سَكَتَ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
[AI] I asked the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , which actions are the best? He said, "Prayer at its prescribed time." I said, "Then what, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Being dutiful to one's parents." I said, "Then what, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Jihad in the cause of Allah." Then he stopped speaking, and if I had asked him more, he would have said more to me.
سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ثُمَّ سَكَتَ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
[AI] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , which deeds are most beloved to Allah? Or which deed is most beloved to Allah? He said, "Praying on time." I asked, "Then what?" He said, "Showing kindness to parents." I asked, "Then what?" He said, "Then striving in the cause of Allah." And if I had asked more, he would have continued to give me guidance.
سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ؟ أَوْ أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
[AI] I asked the Prophet ﷺ , "Which deeds are the best?" He replied, "Performing prayers on time, and then striving in the cause of Allah."
سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ فَقَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ»
[AI] I asked the Prophet ﷺ which deeds are the best. He said, "Praying at the appointed time, then being kind to one's parents, then striving in the cause of Allah."

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِمِيقَاتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ثُمَّ سَكَتَ عَنِّي وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
[AI] You asked me about what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked me. He said, "Prayer on time, kindness to parents, and jihad in the way of Allah." And if I had asked him for more, he would have given me more.
سَأَلْتَنِي عَمَّا سَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
[AI] On the authority of a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , it is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Which deed is the best?" He replied, "The prayer at its appointed time."
عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ سُئِلَ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا»
