I saw ʿUthman and ʿAli. ʿUthman used to forbid people to perform Hajj-at-Tamattuʿ and Hajj-al- Qiran (Hajj and ʿUmra together), and when ʿAli saw (this act of ʿUthman), he assumed Ihram for Hajj and ʿUmra together saying, "Lubbaik for ʿUmra and Hajj," and said, "I will not leave the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ on the saying of somebody."

شَهِدْتُ عُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيًّا ؓ وَعُثْمَانُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ وَأَنْ يُجْمَعَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَلَمَّا رَأَى عَلِيٌّ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا لَبَّيْكَ بِعُمْرَةٍ وَحَجَّةٍ قَالَ مَا كُنْتُ لأَدَعَ سُنَّةَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لِقَوْلِ أَحَدٍ

ʿAli and ʿUthman differed regarding Hajj-at-Tamattuʿ while they were at 'Usfan (a familiar place near Mecca). ʿAli said, "I see you want to forbid people to do a thing that the Prophet ﷺ did?" When ʿAli saw that, he assumed Ihram for both Hajj and ʿUmra.

اخْتَلَفَ عَلِيٌّ وَعُثْمَانُ ؓ وَهُمَا بِعُسْفَانَ فِي الْمُتْعَةِ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ مَا تُرِيدُ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَنْهَى عَنْ أَمْرٍ فَعَلَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ عَلِيٌّ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا

What is your opinion about a matter which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did but you forbid it? Thereupon Uthman said: You leave us alone, whereupon he ('Ali) said: I cannot leave you alone. When 'Ali saw this, he put on Ihram for both of them together (both for Hajj and 'Umra).

اجْتَمَعَ عَلِيٌّ وَعُثْمَانُ ؓ بِعُسْفَانَ فَكَانَ عُثْمَانُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ أَوِ الْعُمْرَةِ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ مَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى أَمْرٍ فَعَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَنْهَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ دَعْنَا مِنْكَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَدَعَكَ فَلَمَّا أَنْ رَأَى عَلِيٌّ ذَلِكَ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا

"I heard 'Ali binHusain narrating from Marwan, that 'Uthman forbade Mut'ah and joining Hajj and "Umrah. 'Ali said; 'Labbaika bi Hajjatin wa 'Umratin ma'an Here I am, (O Allah) for Hajj and "Umrah together. 'Uthman said: 'Are you doing this when I have forbidden it?' 'Ali said; 'I will not give up the Summah of the Messenger of Allah for any of the people.'''

عَلِيٌّ لَبَّيْكَ بِحَجَّةٍ وَعُمْرَةٍ مَعًا فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ أَتَفْعَلُهَا وَأَنَا أَنْهَى عَنْهَا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لَمْ أَكُنْ لأَدَعَ سُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ

I saw ʿAli and ʿUthman ؓ between Makkah and Madinah. ʿUthman was telling people not to do tamattuʿ or join them together (Hajj and ‘Umrah, i.e., qiran). When ʿAli ؓ saw that, he entered ihram for both of them together and said: Here I am for ʿUmrah and Hajj together ‘Uthman ؓ said: You see me telling the people not to do that and you do it? He said: I will not give up a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the opinion of anyone among the people. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1139)

[AI] They both came together, and when Ali saw that, he welcomed both of them and said, "Here I am, answering the call for Umrah and Hajj together." Uthman then said, "Do you see me prohibiting people from doing something while you do it?" Ali responded, "I would never abandon the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ because of what someone among the people says."

يُجْمَعَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ عَلِيٌّ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا قَالَ لَبَّيْكَ عَمْرَةً وَحَجَّةً مَعًا قَالَ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ تَرَانِي أَنْهَى النَّاسَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَتَفْعَلُهُ أَنْتَ؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَدَعَ سُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِقَوْلِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ

"عن سعيد بن المسيب قال: اجْتَمَعَ عَلِىّ وَعثمَانُ بِعُسفَان، وَكَانَ عثمانُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمتعَةِ وَعَلِيٌّ يَأمُرُ بِهَا، وَقَالَ. مَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى أَمْرٍ فَعَلَهُ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ تَنْهَى عَنْهُ؟ ! فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: دَعْنَا مِنْكَ، قَالَ: إِنِّى لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَدَعَكَ مِنِّى، فَلَمَّا رأَى عَلِىٌّ ذَلِكَ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا".
