A person from people who lived before you was called to account (by Allah at the Day of Judgment) and no good was found in his account except this that lie being a rich man had (financial) dealings with people and had commanded his servants to show leniency to the straitened ones. Did you do anything good? He said: No. they said: Try to recall. He said: I used to lend to people and order my servants to give respite to one in straitened circumstances and give allowance to the solvent, for Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, said (to the angels): You should ignore (his failing). [AI] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , a man was accounted for his deeds, before you, who had nothing good except for the fact that he would associate with people and he was lenient. He would command his servant to overlook the mistakes of those who were in debt to him. Allah said, "So We are more entitled than him [to penalize the debtors], but you [O man] should overlook [their mistakes]." Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned this in his narration, saying, "So We are more entitled than him [to penalize the debtors], but we should overlook [their mistakes]."
[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the angels received the soul of a man who was before you, and they said to him, 'Did you ever do any good?' He said, 'No, except that I used to give loans to people, and I would command my young men to be lenient with those who were in a difficult financial situation.'" Then Allah (may He be glorified) said, "Be lenient."
[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: The man who was before you will be held accountable, and it will be found that he had no good deeds except that he was someone who was easy-going and mixed with people. He would say to his servants, "Go easy on the one who is in debt." Allah said to His angels, "We are more deserving of that." So forgive him. This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Bakr.
