101. Sūrat al-Qāriʿah

١٠١۔ سُورَةُ القارِعَة

The Calamity (Meccan)

quran:101:1In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

The Striking Calamity -  

The Clattering Blow, the Resurrection that will make hearts clatter by its terrors.
القرآن:١٠١:١بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

الْقَارِعَةُ  

{القارعة} القيامة التي تقرع القلوب بأهوالها.
quran:101:2

What is the Striking Calamity?  

What is the Clattering Blow? — ˹intended˺ to emphasise its awesomeness (mā’l-qāri‘a: both of these ˹elements˺ constitute a subject and a predicate, and ˹together˺ the predicate of ˹the first˺ al-qāri‘a).
القرآن:١٠١:٢

مَا الْقَارِعَةُ  

{ما القارعة} تهويل لشأنها وهما مبتدأ وخبر القارعة.
quran:101:3

And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?  

And what will show you, ˹what˺ will make known to you, what the Clattering Blow is? — additional emphasis of its awesomeness (the first mā is a subject, and what follows it is its predicate; the second mā and its predicate also function together as the second direct object of ˹the verb˺ adrā, ‘show’).
القرآن:١٠١:٣

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ  

{وما أدراك} أعلمك {ما القارعة} زيادة تهويل لها وما الأولى مبتدأ وما بعدها خبره وما الثانية وخبرها في محل المفعول الثاني لأدرى.

It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,  

The day (yawma: that which renders it accusative is ˹the verb˺ indicated by al-qāri‘a, in other words, ˹by the implied˺ taqra‘u, ‘it clatters’) mankind will be like scattered moths, like a throng of scattered locusts surging into each other in confusion, until they are summoned to the Reckoning,
القرآن:١٠١:٤

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ  

{يوم} ناصبه دل عليه القارعة، أي تقرع {يكون الناس كالفراش المبثوث} كغوغاء الجراد المنتشر يموج بعضهم في بعض للحيرة إلى أن يُدعوا للحساب.
quran:101:5

And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.  

and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, like carded wool in terms of the lightness with which it floats ˹in the air˺ until it comes to settle upon the earth.
القرآن:١٠١:٥

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنْفُوشِ  

{وتكون الجبال كالعهن المنفوش} كالصوف المندوف في خفة سيرها حتى تستوي مع الأرض.
quran:101:6

Then as for one whose scales are heavy ˹with good deeds˺,  

Then as for him whose scales weigh heavy, in that his good deeds outweigh his misdeeds,
القرآن:١٠١:٦

فَأَمَّا مَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ  

{فأما من ثقلت موازينه} بأن رجحت حسناته على سيئاته.
quran:101:7

He will be in a pleasant life.  

he will enjoy a pleasant life, in Paradise, that is to say, a pleasing one, for he will be pleased with it, that is, it will be pleasing to him;
القرآن:١٠١:٧

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَاضِيَةٍ  

{فهو في عيشة راضية} في الجنة، أي ذات رضى بأن يرضاها، أي مرضية له.
quran:101:8

But as for one whose scales are light,  

but as for him whose scales weigh light, in that his evil deeds outweigh his good ones,
القرآن:١٠١:٨

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ  

{وأما من خفَّت موازينه} بأن رجحت سيئاته على حسناته.
quran:101:10

And what can make you know what that is?  

And what will show you what it is?, that is to say, what the Abyss is.
القرآن:١٠١:١٠

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ  

{وما أدراك ماهيه} أي ما هاوية.
quran:101:11

It is a Fire, intensely hot.  

It is: A scorching fire, of extremely hot temperature (the hā’ of hiya is for ˹consonantal˺ quiescence, and is retained when reciting without a ˹subsequent˺ pause or with; some omit it when reciting without a pause). Meccan, consisting of 8 verses.
القرآن:١٠١:١١

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ  

هي {نار حامية} شديدة الحرارة وهاء هيَهْ للسكت تثبت وصلا ووقفا وفي قراءة تحذف وصلاً.
