the Prophet passed by a dead sheep that had been thrown aside. He said: "Who does this belong to?" They said: "Maimunah." He said: "Why did she not make use of its skin?" They said: "It is dead meat (i.e., it was not slaughtered properly)." He said: "Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has only forbidden us to eat it."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a dead goat, which had been given in charity to the freed slave-girl of Maimuna. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Why don't you make use of its skin? They (the Companions around the Holy Prophet) said: It is dead. Upon this he said: It is the eating (of the dead animal) which is prohibited.

"The Messenger of Allah passed by a dead sheep that he had given to a freed slave woman of Maimunah, the wife of the Prophet. He said: 'Why don't you make use of its hide?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is dead meat.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'It is only forbidden to eat it."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Masud that Abdullah ibn Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep which had been given to a mawla of his wife, Maimuna. He said, ' Aren't you going to use its skin?' They said, 'Messenger of Allah, but it is carrion. 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Only eating it is haram.' "  

مالك:٢٥-١٦حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ

Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, "Wouldn't you benefit by its skin?" The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet ﷺ said, "But its eating only is illegal." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2221)

[Machine] "Hanbali (Maymuna’s slave) carried a dead sheep while the Prophet ﷺ was passing. The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'What will the family of this sheep do if they take its hide and tan it in order to benefit from it?' They replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, it's already dead.' He said, 'Only its consumption is prohibited.'"

“Why don’t they take its skin and ten it, and make us of it?” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is dead meat.”* He said: “It is only unlawful to eat it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3610)
