46. Seeking Refuge (2/3)
٤٦۔ كِتَابُ الِاسْتِعَاذَةِ ص ٢
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] often used to seek refuge (with Allah) from debt and sin. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how often you seek refuge from debt!' He said: 'Whoever gets into debt speaks and lies, and makes a promise and breaks it.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5454)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنَ الْمَغْرَمِ وَالْمَأْثَمِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا تَتَعَوَّذُ مِنَ الْمَغْرَمِ قَالَ «إِنَّهُ مَنْ غَرِمَ حَدَّثَ فَكَذَبَ وَوَعَدَ فَأَخْلَفَ»
46.13 [Machine] Seeking refuge from laziness
٤٦۔١٣ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ
"Humaid narrated: 'Anas - bin Malik - was asked about the torment of the grave and about the Dajjal. He said: "The Prophet of Allah [SAW] used to say: Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa fitnatid-dajjali, wa 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from laziness, old age, cowardice, stinginess, the tribulation of the Dajjal and the torment of the grave.)'" كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»
“My father heard me while I was saying: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sadness and laziness and the punishment of the grave (Allāhumma, innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-kasali wa ʿadhābil-qabr).’ He said: ‘O my son, from who did you hear this?’” He said: “I said: ‘I heard you saying them.’ He said: ‘Stick to them, for indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying them.’” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3503)
سَمِعَنِي أَبِي وَأَنَا أَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ» قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ مِمَّنْ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا؟ قَالَ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُهُنَّ قَالَ الْزَمْهُنَّ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُهُنَّ
46.14 [Machine] Seeking refuge from incapacity
٤٦۔١٤ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-harami, 'adhabil-qabr wa fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and miserliness and old age, and the torment of the grave, and the trials of life and death.)" «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ»
"I will not teach you anything but that which the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to teach us. He said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wal-harami, wa 'adhabil-qabri, Allahumma ati nafsi taqwaha, wa zakkiha anta khairu min zakkaha, anta waliyyuha wa mawlaha. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min qalbin la yakhsha'u wa min nafsin la tashba'u wa 'ilmin la yanfa'u wa da'watin la yustajabu laha (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, old age, the torment of the grave. O Allah, make my soul obedient and purify it, for You are the best One to purify it, You are its Guardian and Lord. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a heart that is not humble, a soul that is not satisfied, knowledge that is of no benefit and a supplication that is not answered.)" لَا أَعْلَمُكُمْ إِلَّا مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُعَلِّمُنَا «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ اللهُمَّ آتِ أَنْفُسَنَا تَقْوَاهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا أَنْتَ وَلِيِّهَا وَمَوْلَاهَا اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ وَعِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ وَدَعْوَةٍ لَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا»
46.15 [Machine] Seeking refuge from humiliation
٤٦۔١٥ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الذِّلَّةِ
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: "Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika minal-faqri wa a'udhu bika min al-qillati wadh-dhillati, wa a'udhu bika an azlima aw uzlam (O Allah, I seek refuge with you from poverty, I seek refuge with You from want and humiliation, and I seek refuge with You from wronging others or being wronged.)" Al-Awza'I contradicted him. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5460)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْقِلَّةِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ» خَالَفَهُ الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ
the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Seek refuge with Allah from poverty, insufficiency and humiliation, and from wronging (others) and being wronged.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3842)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ وَالْقِلَّةِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَنْ تَظْلِمَ أَوْ تُظْلَمَ»
46.16 [Machine] Seeking refuge from scarcity
٤٦۔١٦ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْقِلَّةِ
the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Seek refuge with Allah from poverty, insufficiency and humiliation, and from wronging (others) and being wronged.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3842)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ وَمِنَ الْقِلَّةِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ»
The Prophet ﷺ used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from poverty", lack and abasement, and I seek refuge in Thee lest I cause or suffer wrong." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1544)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْقِلَّةِ وَالْفَقْرِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَظْلَمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ»
46.17 [Machine] Seeking refuge from poverty
٤٦۔١٧ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ
the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Seek refuge with Allah from poverty, insufficiency and humiliation, and from wronging (others) and being wronged.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3842)
عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ وَالْقِلَّةِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَنْ تَظْلِمَ أَوْ تُظْلَمَ»
He heard his father say following the prayer: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqri, wa 'adhabil-qabri (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from Kufr, poverty and the torment of the grave.)" I started to recite them and he said: "O my son, where did you learn these words?" I said: "O my father, I heard you saying this supplication at the end of the prayer, and I learned them from you." He said: "Continue to recite them, O my son, for the Prophet of Allah [SAW] used to say this supplication at the end of the prayer." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5465)
سَمِعَ وَالِدَهُ يَقُولُ فِي دُبُرِ الصَّلَاةِ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ» فَجَعَلْتُ أَدْعُو بِهِنَّ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ أَنَّى عَلِمْتَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ؟ قَالَ يَا أَبَهْ سَمِعْتُكَ تَدْعُو بِهِنَّ فِي دُبُرِ الصَّلَاةِ فَأَخَذْتُهُنَّ عَنْكَ قَالَ فَالْزَمْهُنَّ يَا بُنَيَّ فَإِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهِنَّ فِي دُبُرِ الصَّلَاةِ
46.18 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the harms of the grave
٤٦۔١٨ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ
Prophet (saas) would supplicate with these words: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min fitnatin-nari wa 'adhabin-nar, wa min fitnatil-qabri wa 'adhabil-qabr, wa min sharri fitnatil-ghina wa min sharri fitnatil-faqr, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal. Allahumma aghsil khatayaya bima'ith-thalfi wal-barad, wa naqqi qalbi minal-khataya kama naqqaytath-thawbal-abyad minad-danas. Wa ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya kama ba'adta baynal-mashriqi wal-maghrib. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wal-harami wal-ma'thami wal-maghrami (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the tribulation of the Fire and the torment of the Fire, and from the tribulation of the grave, and from the evil of the tribulation of richness and the evil of the tribulation of poverty, and from the evil of the trial of the False Christ. O Allah! Wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from sin as a white garment is cleansed from filth, and put a great distance between me and my sins, as great as the distance You have made between the east and the west. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness and old age, and from sins and debt)." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3838)
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَثِيرًا مَا يَدْعُو بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ النَّارِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَشَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْفَقْرِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ اللهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَايَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَأَنْقِ قَلْبِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا أَنْقَيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَبَاعِدْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ خَطَايَايَ كَمَا بَاعَدْتَ بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْمَأْثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ»
46.19 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from Hunger
٤٦۔١٩ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْجُوعِ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from hunger, for it is an evil bed-fellow; and I seek refuge in Thee from treachery, for it is an evil hidden trait." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1547)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُوعِ فَإِنَّهُ بِئْسَ الضَّجِيعُ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخِيَانَةِ فَإِنَّهَا بِئْسَتِ الْبِطَانَةُ»
46.20 [Machine] Seeking refuge from betrayal
٤٦۔٢٠ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْخِيَانَةِ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from hunger, for it is an evil bed-fellow; and I seek refuge in Thee from treachery, for it is an evil hidden trait." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1547)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُوعِ فَإِنَّهُ بِئْسَ الضَّجِيعُ وَمِنَ الْخِيَانَةِ فَإِنَّهَا بِئْسَتِ الْبِطَانَةُ»
46.21 [Machine] Seeking refuge from division, hypocrisy, and bad morals.
٤٦۔٢١ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الشِّقَاقِ وَالنِّفَاقِ وَسُوءِ الْأَخْلَاقِ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate by saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from divisiveness, hypocrisy, and evil character." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1546)
أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَدْعُو «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشِّقَاقِ وَالنِّفَاقِ وَسُوءِ الْأَخْلَاقِ»
46.22 [Machine] Seeking refuge from debt
٤٦۔٢٢ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْمَغْرَمِ
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] often used to seek refuge (with Allah) from debt and sin. It was said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah! You often seek refuge from debt and sin?' He said: 'If a man gets into debt, he speaks and lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5472)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُكْثِرُ التَّعَوُّذَ مِنَ الْمَغْرَمِ وَالْمَأْثَمِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ تَكْثُرُ التَّعَوُّذَ مِنَ الْمَغْرَمِ وَالْمَأْثَمِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا غَرِمَ حَدَّثَ فَكَذَبَ وَوَعَدَ فَأَخْلَفَ»
46.23 [Machine] Seeking protection from debt
٤٦۔٢٣ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الدَّيْنِ
"I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: 'A'udhu billahi minal-kufri wad-dain. (I seek refuge with Allah from Kufr and debt.)' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, are you equating debt with Kufr?' The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Yes.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5473)
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالدَّيْنِ» قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُعْدَلُ الدَّيْنُ بِالْكُفْرِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «نَعَمْ»
The Prophet [SAW] said: "A'udhu billahi minal-kufri wad-dain. (I seek refuge with Allah from Kufr and debt.)" A man said: "Are you equating debt with Kufr?" He said: "Yes." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5474)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالدَّيْنِ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَيُعْدَلُ الدَّيْنُ بِالْكُفْرِ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»
46.24 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the overwhelming debt
٤٦۔٢٤ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say these words in his supplication: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dain, wa ghalabatil-'aduwwi, wa shamatatil-a'da'. (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from being overwhelmed with debt, from being overpowered by the enemy and from the enemy rejoicing over my misfortunes.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5475)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الْعَدُوِّ وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ»
46.25 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the burden of debt
٤٦۔٢٥ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ ضِلَعِ الدَّيْنِ
The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men." (See Hadith No. 374) (Using translation from Bukhārī 6369)
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ»
46.26 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from the Evil of the Temptation of Wealth
٤٦۔٢٦ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْغِنَى
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa fitnatin-nar, wa fitnatil-qabr, wa 'adhabil-qabr, wa sharri fitnati masihid-dajjali wa sharri fitnatil-ghana', wa sharri fitnatil-faqri. Allahummaghsil khatayaya kama naqqaitath-thawbal-abyada minad-danas. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali walharami wal-maghrami wal-ma'tham (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, the tribulation of the Fire, the tribulation of the grave and the torment of the grave, the evil of the tribulation of Masihid-Dajjal, the evil of the tribulation of richness and the evil of the tribulation of poverty. O Allah, wash away my sins with water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart of sin as a white garment is cleansed of filth. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from laziness, old age, debt and sin.)'" كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَفِتْنَةِ النَّارِ وَفِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَشَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْغِنَى وَشَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْفَقْرِ اللهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَايَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّ قَلْبِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ وَالْمَأْثَمِ»
46.27 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the evils of worldly tribulations
٤٦۔٢٧ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا
Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas used to recommend these five (statements) and say that the Prophet ﷺ said so (and they are): "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from miserliness, and seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to geriatric old age, and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world, and seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6370)
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَرُدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»
"Sa'd used to teach his children these words as a teacher teaches his students, and he would say that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to seek refuge (with Allah) with these words at the end of every prayer: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika mnal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhalil-'umuri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa min 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from miserliness, and I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and I seek refuge with You from reaching the age of senility, and I seek refuge with You from the trials of this life and the torment of the grave.)'" عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ الْأَوْدِيِّ قَالَا كَانَ سَعْدٌ يُعَلِّمُ بَنِيهِ هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ كَمَا يُعَلِّمُ الْمَكْتَبُ الْغِلْمَانَ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِهِنَّ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»
The Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge with Allah from cowardice, miserliness, the tribulation of the heart and the torment of the grave. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5443)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَسُوءِ الْعُمُرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ
"The Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge (with Allah) from five things: From miserliness, cowardice, reaching the age of second childhood, the tribulation of the heart and the torment of the grave." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5446)
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَسُوءِ الْعُمُرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ
"I heard 'Umar bin Al-Khattab say: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to seek refuge with Allah from five things and say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa suw'il-'umuri, wa fitnatis-sadri wa 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from cowardice, miserliness, reaching the age of second childhood, the trials of the heart and the torment of the grave.)'" سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَسُوءِ الْعُمُرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ
"The Companions of Muhammad [SAW] told me that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to seek refuge with Allah from stinginess, cowardice, the trials of the heart and the torment of the grave." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5482)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنَ الشُّحِّ وَالْجُبْنِ وَفِتْنَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»

٤٦۔٢٨ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: "A'udhu billahi minal-kufri wal-faqr. (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from Kufr and poverty.)" A man said: "Are they equal?" He said: "Yes." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5485)
عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ وَيَعَتَدِلَانِ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»
46.29 [Machine] Seeking refuge from misguidance
٤٦۔٢٩ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الضَّلَالِ
[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would go out, he would say, 'In the name of Allah, O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being humiliated or causing others to be misguided or causing injustice or being ignorant or being treated ignorantly.'"
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا خَرَجَ قَالَ «بِسْمِ اللهِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَذِلَّ أَوْ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أَنْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ»
46.30 [Machine] Seeking protection from being wronged
٤٦۔٣٠ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ أَنْ يُظْلَمَ
“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika an adilla aw azilla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala ‘alayya (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from going astray or stumbling, from wronging others or being wronged, and from behaving or being treated in an ignorant manner).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3884)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَذِلَّ أَوْ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ»
46.31 [Machine] Seeking refuge from oppression.
٤٦۔٣١ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ أَنْ يَظْلِمَ
When the Prophet [SAW] went out of his house, he said: "Bismillahi Rabbi! A'udhu bika min an azilla aw adilla aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya (In the name of Allah, my Lord, I seek refuge in You from falling into error or going astray, or wrongdoing (others) or being wronged, and from behaving or being treated in an ignorant manner.)" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ قَالَ «بِسْمِ اللهِ رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَذِلَّ أَوْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ»
46.32 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the dominance of the enemy
٤٦۔٣٢ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الْعَدُوِّ
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say these words in his supplication: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dain, wa ghalabatil-'aduwwi, wa shamatatil-a'da'. (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from being overwhelmed with debt, from being overpowered by the enemy and from the enemy rejoicing over my misfortunes.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5475)
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ «اللهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الْعَدُوِّ وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ»
46.33 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from the Ridicule of Enemies
٤٦۔٣٣ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ شَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ
The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say these words in his supplication: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dain, wa ghalabatil-'aduwwi, wa shamatatil-a'da'. ٤٦۔٣٤ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْهَرَمِ
The Prophet [SAW] used to say supplication in these words: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, walharami, wal-jubni, wal-'ajzi, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, cowardice, and incapacity, and from the trials of life and death.)" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5489)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهَذِهِ الدَّعَوَاتِ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْعَجْزِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ»
46.35 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from the Evil of Destiny
٤٦۔٣٥ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ سَوْءِ الْقَضَاءِ
"The Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge from these three: From being overtaken by destruction, from his enemies rejoicing in his misfortune, from being destined to an evil end, and from the difficult moment of a calamity." Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: "There were three, and I mentioned four because I do not remember which one was not one of them." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5491)
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثَةِ مِنْ دَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ وَسُوءِ الْقَضَاءِ وَجَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ هُوَ ثَلَاثَةٌ فَذَكَرْتُ أَرْبَعَةً لِأَنِّي لَا أَحْفَظُ الْوَاحِدَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ فِيهِ
46.36 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the grasp of misery
٤٦۔٣٦ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ دَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ
The Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge from being destined to an evil end, from his enemies rejoicing in his misfortune, from being overtaken by destruction and from the difficult moment of a calamity. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5492)
«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْتَعِيذُ مِنْ سَوْءِ الْقَضَاءِ وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ وَجَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ»
46.37 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from Madness
٤٦۔٣٧ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْجُنُونِ
The Prophet [SAW] used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-jununi wal-jadhami, wal-barasi wa sayy'il-asqam (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from possession, leprosy, leukederma and bad sickness (that may lead to visible deformity)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5493)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُنُونِ وَالْجُذَامِ وَالْبَرَصِ وَسَيَّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ»
46.38 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from the Evil Eye
٤٦۔٣٨ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ عَيْنِ الْجَانِّ
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from the evil eye of the jinn and of mankind. When the Mu’awwidhatain* were revealed, he started to recite them and stopped reciting anything else.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3511)
«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ عَيْنِ الْجَانِّ وَعَيْنِ الْإِنْسِ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَانِ أَخَذَ بِهِمَا وَتَرَكَ مَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ»
46.39 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from the Evil of Old Age
٤٦۔٣٩ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ سَوْءِ الْكِبَرِ
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to seek refuge by saying these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa suw'il-kibari, wa fitnatid-dajjali wa 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from laziness, old age, cowardice, miserliness, a bad old age, the tribulation of the Dajjal and the torment of the grave.)'" كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ كَانَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»
46.40 [Machine] Seeking refuge from harm
٤٦۔٤٠ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْهَرَمِ
"I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali, walharami, wal-maghrami, wal-ma'thami, wa a'udhu bika min sharril-masihid-dajjali, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nar (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, debt and sin, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of the Al-Masihid-Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire.)'" سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ وَالْمَأْثَمِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ»
46.41 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the worst of ages
٤٦۔٤١ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ
"I heard Mus'ab bin Sa'd (narrate) about his father: 'He used to tech us five things, which he said that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to recite in his supplication: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhalil-'umuri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from reaching the age of senility, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave).'" كَانَ يُعَلِّمُنَا خَمْسًا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدْعُو بِهِنَّ وَيَقُولُهُنَّ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَرُدَّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكْ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»
46.42 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the evil of old age
٤٦۔٤٢ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ سَوْءِ الْعُمُرِ
"I went for Hajj with 'Umar, and in Muzdalifah, I heard him say that the Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge from five things: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika min su'il-'umuri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatis-sadri, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from miserliness and cowardice, and I seek refuge with You from reaching the age of second childhood, and I seek refuge in You from the ills of the heart, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave.'" حَجَجْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ بِجَمْعٍ يَقُولُ أَلَا إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ خَمْسٍ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سَوْءِ الْعُمُرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الصَّدْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ»
46.43 [Machine] Seeking refuge from temptation after creation
٤٦۔٤٣ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنَ الْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْنِ
When the Messenger of Allah [SAW] traveled, he would say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa kabatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa da'watil-mazlumi, wa suw'il-munzari fil-ahli wal-mal (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return, from loss after plenty, from the supplication of the one who has been wronged, and seeing some calamity befall my family or wealth.)" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا سَافَرَ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَالْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْنِ وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ»
46.44 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the evil of appearance in family and wealth.
٤٦۔٤٤ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ سَوْءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ
When the Messenger of Allah [SAW] traveled, he would say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa kabatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa da'watil-mazlumi, wa suw'il-munzari fil-ahli wal-mal (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return, from loss after plenty, from the supplication of the one who has been wronged, and seeing some calamity befall my family or wealth.)" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا سَافَرَ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَالْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْنِ وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ»
46.45 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the call of the oppressed.
٤٦۔٤٥ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ دَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ
"When the Prophet [SAW] traveled, he would seek refuge with Allah from the hardships of travel, and the sorrows of return, from loss after plenty, from the supplication of the one who has been wronged, and from seeing some calamity befall." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5500)
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِذَا سَافَرَ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَالْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْنِ وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ»
46.46 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the chaos of upheaval
٤٦۔٤٦ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ كَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ
"When the Messenger of Allah [SAW] traveled and rode his mount, he gestured with his finger - and Shu'bah (one of the narrators) stretched out his finger - and said: 'Allahumma, antas-sahibu fis-safari wal-khalifatu fil-ahli wal-mal. Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa kabatil-munqalabi (O Allah, You are our help when we are traveling and the One Who takes care of our families and wealth (in our absence). O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return.)'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5501)
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا سَافَرَ فَرَكِبَ رَاحِلَتَهُ قَالَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ وَمَدَّ شُعْبَةً بِإِصْبَعِهِ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اللهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ»
46.47 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from an Evil Neighbor
٤٦۔٤٧ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ جَارِ السَّوْءِ
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Seek refuge with Allah from a bad neighbor in one's permanent abode, for one's neighbor in the desert will change.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5502)
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللهِ مِنْ جَارِ السَّوْءِ فِي دَارِ الْمُقَامِ فَإِنَّ الْجَارَ الْبَادِي مُحَوَّلٌ عَنْكَ»
46.48 [Machine] Seeking Refuge from Male Domination
٤٦۔٤٨ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said to Abu Talhah: 'Find me one of your boys to serve me.' Abu Talhah brought me out, riding behind him, and I served the Prophet [SAW] every time he stopped (on his journey). And I often heard him say: 'Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min al-harami, wal-huzni, wal-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wa dala'id-dain, wa ghalabatir-rijal (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from old age, grief, incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, the burden of debt and being overpowered by men.)'" قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِأَبِي طَلْحَةَ «الْتَمِسْ لَنَا غُلَامًا مِنْ غِلْمَانِكُمْ يَخْدُمُنِي» فَخَرَجَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ يُرْدِفُنِي وَرَاءَهُ وَكُنْتُ أَخْدُمُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كُلَّمَا نَزَلَ وَكُنْتُ أَسْمَعْهُ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ»
46.49 [Machine] Seeking refuge from the tribulation of the Antichrist
٤٦۔٤٩ الِاسْتِعَاذَةُ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ
the Prophet used to seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave and the trial of the Dajjal, and he said: "You will be tested in your graves." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2065)
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْتَعِيذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَقَالَ «إِنَّكُمْ تُفْتَنُونَ فِي قُبُورِكُمْ»
