The most evil of people are the harsh tyrannical leaders

that ʿĀʾidh b. ʿAmr —who was among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ— came to ʿUbaydullāh b. Ziyād and said: O my son, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed, the worst of shepherds are the harsh (tyrannical) ones; so beware of being among them.” He said to him: “Sit down; you are only from the refuse of Muhammad’s Companions ﷺ. He replied: Did they even have any refuse? Refuse came only after them and among others besides them.

مسلم:١٨٣٠ – حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ

أَنَّ عَائِذَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو – وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ – دَخَلَ عَلَى عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ فَقَالَ: أَىْ بُنَىَّ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ شَرَّ الرِّعَاءِ الْحُطَمَةُ، فَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنْهُمْ»، فَقَالَ لَهُ: اجْلِسْ، فَإِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنْ نُخَالَةِ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: وَهَلْ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ نُخَالَةٌ إِنَّمَا كَانَتِ النُّخَالَةُ بَعْدَهُمْ وَفِي غَيْرِهِمْ.

[Machine] Yazid was one of the righteous companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . He approached Abdullah ibn Ziyad and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The worst kind of shepherds are those who cause the sheep to disperse.' Abdul Rahman added, 'I think he also said, 'Beware of being one of them.' Yazid did not doubt this, so he said to him, 'Sit down, for you are from the elite companions of Muhammad ﷺ .' He asked, 'Were there any elite companions or descendants among them?' He replied, 'After them, there were descendants and others.'"

أحمد:٢٠٦٣٧ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ قَالَ دَخَلَ عَائِذُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو قَالَ

يَزِيدُ وَكَانَ مِنْ صَالِحِي أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَلَى عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ شَرُّ الرِّعَاءِ الْحُطَمَةُ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ إِيَّاكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنْهُمْ وَلَمْ يَشُكَّ يَزِيدُ فَقَالَ اجْلِسْ فَإِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنْ نُخَالَةِ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ قَالَ وَهَلْ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ أَوْ فِيهِمْ نُخَالَةٌ؟ ‍ إِنَّمَا كَانَتِ النُّخَالَةُ بَعْدَهُمْ وَفِي غَيْرِهِمْ

ذِكْرُ الزَّجْرِ عَنِ انْهِمَاكِ الْأُمَرَاءِ فِي أَمْوَالِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِمَا لَا يَسَعُهُمْ وَلَا يَحِلُّ لَهُمُ ارْتِكَابُهُ

O my son, I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The worst of guardians is the cruel ruler. Beware of being one of them. Ubaidullah said (to him out of arrogance): Sit you down. You are from the chaff of the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ. A'idh said: Was there worthless chaff among them? Such worthless chaff appeared after them and among other people. Ziyad said to him, "Sit down, for you are among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ ." 'A'idh asked him, "But was there breakage among them?" He replied, "The breakage was after them and among others."

الطبراني:١٥١٧٧ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ ثنا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو رَبِيعَةَ فَهِدُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْخُزَاعِيُّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ قَالُوا ثنا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ثنا الْحَسَنُ قَالَ دَخَلَ عَائِذُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَلَى زِيَادٍ فَلَمْ يُسَلِّمْ عَلَيْهِ بِالْإِمْرَةِ فَقَالَ عَائِذٌ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مِنْ شَرِّ الرِّعَاءِ الْحُطَمَةُ» اتَّقِ أَنْ لَا تَكُونَ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ زِيَادٌ اجْلِسْ فَإِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مِنْ نُخَالَةِ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَائِذٌ وَكَانَتْ فِيهِمْ نُخَالَةٌ؟ أَنَّمَا كَانَتِ النُّخَالَةُ بَعْدَهُمْ وَفِي غَيْرِهِمْ
