The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent some horsemen to Najd. They captured a man. He was from the tribe of Banu Hanifa and was called Thumama b. Uthal. He was the chief of the people of Yamama. People bound him with one of the pillars of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to (see) him. He said: O Thumama, what do you think? He replied: Muhammad, I have good opinion of you. If you kill me, you will kill a person who has spilt blood. If you do me a favour, you will do a favour to a grateful person. If you want wealth, ask and you will get what you will demand. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be pon him) lefthim (in this condition) for two days, (and came to him again) and said: What do you think, O Thumama? He replied: What I have already told you. If you do a favour, you will do a favour to a grateful person. If you kill me, you will kill a person who has spilt blood. If you want wealth, ask and you will get what you will demand. Then he entered the mosque and said: I bear testimony (to the truth) that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His bondman and His messenger. O Muhammad, by Allah, there was no face on the earth more hateful to me than your face, but (now) your face has become to me the dearest of all faces. The Prophet ﷺ sent some cavalry towards Najd and they brought a man from the tribe of Banu Hanifa who was called Thumama bin Uthal. They fastened him to one of the pillars of the Mosque. The Prophet went to him and said, "What have you got, O Thumama?" He replied," I have got a good thought, O Muhammad! If you should kill me, you would kill a person who has already killed somebody, and if you should set me free, you would do a favor to one who is grateful, and if you want property, then ask me whatever wealth you want." He was left till the next day when the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "What have you got, Thumama? He said, "What I told you, i.e. if you set me free, you would do a favor to one who is grateful." The Prophet ﷺ left him till the day after, when he said, "What have you got, O Thumama?" He said, "I have got what I told you. "On that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Release Thumama." So he (i.e. Thumama) went to a garden of date-palm trees near to the Mosque, took a bath and then entered the Mosque and said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and also testify that Muhammad is His Apostle! By Allah, O Muhammad! There was no face on the surface of the earth most disliked by me than yours, but now your face has become the most beloved face to me. By Allah, there was no religion most disliked by me than yours, but now it is the most beloved religion to me. By Allah, there was no town most disliked by me than your town, but now it is the most beloved town to me. Your cavalry arrested me (at the time) when I was intending to perform the ʿUmra. And now what do you think?" The Prophet ﷺ gave him good tidings (congratulated him) and ordered him to perform the ʿUmra. So when he came to Mecca, someone said to him, "You have become a Sabian?" Thumama replied, "No! By Allah, I have embraced Islam with Muhammad, Apostle of Allah. No, by Allah! Not a single grain of wheat will come to you from Yamamah unless the Prophet gives his permission."

Abu Hurairah said “ The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ sent some horsemen to Najd and they brought a man of the Banu Hanifah called Thumamah bint Uthal who was the chief of the people of Al Yamamah and bound him to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ came out to him and said “What are you expecting, Thumamah?”. He replied “I expect good, Muhammad. If you kill (me), you will kill one whose blood will be avenged, if you show favor, you will show it to one who is grateful and if you want property and ask you will be given as much of it as you wish. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ left him till the following day and asked him ”What are you expecting, Thumamah?” He repeated the same words (in reply). The Apostle of Allaah ﷺleft him till the day after the following one and he mentioned the same words. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ then said “Set Thumamah free.” He went off to some palm trees near the mosque. He took a bath there and entered the mosque and said “I testify that there is no god but Allaah and I testify that Muhammd is His servant and His apostle. He then narrated the rest of the tradition. The narrator ‘Isa said “Al Laith narrated to us”. He said “a man of respect and reverence.”

[Machine] From Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: Sufyan, whom we heard from Ibn 'Ajlan, said: "I do not know who asked Sufyan about Thumamah bin Uthal." He said: "The Muslims captured him, and whenever he passed by them they would say: 'What do you have, O Thumamah?' He would say: 'If you kill, kill someone who has blood (i.e., deserves to be killed), and if you show kindness, show kindness to one who shows gratitude, and if you take (something), then give (something in return).'" He said: "Then, when he passed by them, they would say the same thing to him, and he would give the same answer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ released him, and Allah instilled in his heart: 'O Muhammad, you became dearer to me than anything else, even though your face used to be the most hateful of all faces, and your religion used to be the most hateful of all religions to me, and your city (Makkah) used to be the most hateful of all cities to me. But now you have become the most beloved of all people and faces to me. No grain of barley comes to the people of Quraish until I no longer think of it, but for Thumamah bin Uthal.' 'Umar said: 'By Allah, I have never seen anyone who was dearer to me and at the same time less in my eyes than a pig, and I have never seen anyone who was dearer to me and at the same time greater in my eyes than a mountain.' Then he left and went to Yamamah. They detained him, and they were angry and upset. They wrote: 'Shall we decide what to do with him?' He (Thumamah) said: 'No decision should be made about me, until I have been to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." ibnhibban:1239ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Hamdānī > ʿĪsá b. Ḥammād > al-Layth > Saʿīd al-Maqburī > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left him until the next day when he (came to him again) and said: What do you think, O Thumama? He replied: What I have already told you. If you do me a favour, you will do a favour to a grateful person. If you kill me, you will kill a person who has spilt blood. If you want wealth ask and you will get what you will demand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Set Thumama free. He went to a palm-grove near the mosque and took a bath. By Allah, there was no religion more hateful to me than your religion, but (now) your religion has become the dearest of all religions to me. By Allah, there was no city more hateful to me than your city, but (now) your city has become the dearest of all cities to me. Your horsemen captured me when I intended going for Umra. Now what is your opinion (in the matter)? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced good tidings to him and told him to go on 'Umra. When he reached Mecca, somebody said to him: Have you changed your religion? He said: No! I have rather embraced Islam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, you will not get a single grain of wheat from Yamama until it is permitted by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Muslim 1764a)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ prayed to Allah when he saw what was being done to him, and asked Allah to enable him to have power over that person. This person was a polytheist and he intended to kill the Prophet ﷺ . Thumamah, a believer who was still practicing polytheism at the time, approached the Prophet ﷺ until they entered the city. Thumamah was confused about what to do in the city until he was captured and brought to the Prophet ﷺ . The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to be tied to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Prophet ﷺ came to him and asked him, "Thumamah, what do you think? Can Allah do whatever he wants with you?" Thumamah replied, "That is true, O Muhammad. If you kill, you will kill a man with blood, and if you forgive, you will forgive one who is grateful, and if you ask for wealth, you will give it to him." The Prophet ﷺ left him until the next day when he passed by him again and asked him what he thought. Thumamah replied with the same response, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Release him, for I have forgiven you, O Thumamah." Thumamah left until he reached a wall of the city, where he performed ablution and purified himself and his clothes. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ who was sitting in the mosque with his companions, and he said to him, "O Muhammad, by Allah, I have never seen a face more hated to me than yours, nor a religion more hated to me than yours, nor a city more hated to me than yours. But now, by Allah, I have never seen a face more beloved to me than yours, nor a religion more beloved to me than yours, nor a city more beloved to me than yours. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Messenger of Allah, I had set out for Umrah while still following the religion of my people, so give me glad tidings of a reward from Allah for my Umrah." The Prophet ﷺ gave him the glad tidings and taught him, and Thumamah left as a believer. When he reached Makkah, the Quraysh heard him speaking about the matter of Muhammad and Islam, so they became angry with him. He said, "By Allah, I have not come to you to speak about anything, but I have embraced Islam and believed in Muhammad." The Quraysh were angered by his words, but he said, "By Allah, I have not spoken falsely, but I have embraced Islam and believed in Muhammad. I swear by the One in whose hand is the soul of Thumamah, not even a grain of wheat from the land of Al-Yamamah will reach you until Muhammad ﷺ gives permission." And Thumamah remained in Makkah until the call to prayer was made by Muhammad ﷺ , and he left for his homeland. The Quraysh prevented him from taking any food with him until they sent a letter to the Prophet ﷺ asking him, by the ties of kinship, to order Thumamah to let them have some of the food. The Prophet ﷺ complied with their request.
