ذِكْرُ الْبَيَانِ أَنَّ الْأَمْرَ بِصِيَامِ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ أَمْرُ نَدَبٍ لَا حَتْمٍ

[Machine] Moawiya gave a speech in Medina during a visit he made on the day of Ashura. He asked, "Where are your scholars, O people of Medina? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'This is the day of Ashura, and it is not obligatory for you to fast on it, but I am fasting. Whoever wants to fast may do so.'"

أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ خَطَبَ بِالْمَدِينَةَ فِي قَدْمَةٍ قَدِمَهَا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ»

"I heard Mu'awiyah say on the day of 'Ashura when he was on the Mindar: O people of Al-Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah say on this day: "I am fasting, so whoever wants to fast let him do so."

[Machine] He informed him that he heard Muawiya while he was preaching to the people on the day of Ashura, saying: "O people of the city, where are your scholars? Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'This is the day of Ashura, and it is not obligatory for you to fast it, but indeed I am fasting.' And he said that, 'So whoever among you wishes to fast, let him fast, and whoever wishes to break his fast, let him break it.'"
