That he heard Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan on the day of 'Ashura' during the year he performed the Hajj, saying on the pulpit, "O the people of Medina! Where are your Religious Scholars? I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'This is the day of 'Ashura'. Allah has not enjoined its fasting on you but I am fasting it. You have the choice either to fast or not to fast (on this day).' "

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Humayd ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf heard Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan say from the mimbar on the day of Ashura in the year in which he made the hajj, "People of Madina, where are your learned men? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about this day, 'This is the day of Ashura, and fasting it has not been prescribed for you. I am fasting it, and whoever of you wants to fast it can do so, and whoever does not want to, does not have to.' "

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لِهَذَا الْيَوْمِ هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ

[Machine] Moawiya gave a speech in Medina during a visit he made on the day of Ashura. He asked, "Where are your scholars, O people of Medina? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'This is the day of Ashura, and it is not obligatory for you to fast on it, but I am fasting. Whoever wants to fast may do so.'"

أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ خَطَبَ بِالْمَدِينَةَ فِي قَدْمَةٍ قَدِمَهَا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ»

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "This day, the day of Ashura, is not obligatory for you to fast. But I am fasting, so whoever wishes may fast on this day," referring to the day of Ashura.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ هَذَا اليَوْمُ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ فَلْيَصُمْهُ يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , saying, "This is the day of Ashura and fasting is not obligatory upon you. However, I am fasting, so whoever among you wants to fast, they may fast, and whoever wants to break their fast, they may break it."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»

[Machine] He informed him that he heard Muawiya while he was preaching to the people on the day of Ashura, saying: "O people of the city, where are your scholars? Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'This is the day of Ashura, and it is not obligatory for you to fast it, but indeed I am fasting.' And he said that, 'So whoever among you wishes to fast, let him fast, and whoever wishes to break his fast, let him break it.'"

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ لِلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ» وَهُوَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ «فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the day of Ashura and said, "This is a day that fasting is not obligatory upon you, and I am fasting. Whoever wishes to fast, let them fast, and whoever wishes to break their fast, let them do so."

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ «هَذَا يَوْمٌ لَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»

[Machine] He heard Muawiyah giving a sermon saying, "Oh people of the city, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'This is the day of Ashura and Allah has not made its fasting obligatory. But I am fasting so whoever likes to fast may do so, and whoever likes to break the fast may do so.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يَفْرِضِ اللهُ صِيَامَهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»

[Machine] He informed him that he heard Mu'awiyah giving a sermon to the people of Medina saying, "O people of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Indeed, this is the day of Ashura and Allah did not make it obligatory for you to fast. So whoever wishes to fast, let them fast, and whoever wishes to break their fast, let them break it.'" Abu Abdullah said, "And this is the correct opinion."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يَكْتُبِ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامَهُ» وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ مُعَاوِيَةُ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَهَذَا هُوَ الصَّوَابُ
